Gunning for your Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)ticket? CCNA Exam Certification Guide helps you transform yourreal-world experience into test-ready material you can use to satisfyall requirements of the CCNA test (exam 640-407).

The CCNA exam isall about internetworking, with emphasis on the role routers play insending packets back and forth among networks. Since the CCNA ExamCertification Guide is published by Cisco Press, it holds to theexam's focus. After a discussion of the Open Systems Interconnection(OSI) reference model and the mechanics of how each layer operates inan internetworking environment, the author talks about Cisco'sInternetworking Operating System (IOS) and how it does its job, presenting information about setting up, configuring, and managing IOSalong the way. Author Wendell Odom goes on to discuss networkingprotocols (especially TCP/IP) and the telecommunications technologiesfor connecting the nodes of a wide area network (WAN).

The bookpresents the CCNA material in sections. This approach allows you towork through Cisco's stated objectives for the exam one at a time, consecutively, or by only shoring up on weak spots. A quiz program onthe companion CD-ROM offers extra drilling in problemareas. --David Wall ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs some Practice exams included
I studied from this book and thanks God I passed the exam. However, I had to get many other sources to practice on exam questions. I think the book is very good, but it lacks the exam-feel multiple questions. It also has a lot of writing which can be shortened out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but overkill for the CCNA
This is a fairly good book for the folks on the CCNP/CCIE track, its probably overkill for folks just looking to get their CCNA (The Todd Lammle book is probably better suited for that). It covers a broad range ofmaterial in fairly good depth. There are a few technical errors in thebook, but overall if you can absorb 70 % of the information in this bookand have a good understanding of the practice scenarios you will have noproblem passing the CCNA.I found the sample exam on CD to be much harderthen the actual CCNA 640-507 exam, also there were a few errors in the testexam.Overall a good pick for those on the CCNP/CCIE track.I picked upthis book 5 days before I was scheduled to take the CCNA and passed with a924.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exam retires July 31, 2000
This exam will retire on July 31, 2000.People planning to take the exam after that date should buy the newest edition of this book.

One person whom I know who has taken the exam says the real exam is significantly moredifficult than the questions that are on the CD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs a lot of work
There's useful study material here somewhere -- but just try to puzzle it out.

This book BADLY needs to go back to a real editor. Not just to clean up the errors (there are a truckload of 'em), but to give it somesort of organization that makes sense. And while they're at it -- to tryexplaining commands and concepts before using them in examples andscenarios.

For the sort of money charged for these books, one expectssomething that's been at least read by somebody other than the authorbefore being printed.

Unless you enjoy wading through things likerepeated "study objective number" tables, I'd avoid this one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ccna v.lab
A basic lab setting will help you to break the ice.If you are serious about CCNA there are better ones in the market place.
Only around 10 guided labs. For those who not have hands-on router/switch experience, the Virtual Lab will give some insight into configurations assuming that you have done your regular textbook reading.
You are going to need much more if you wish pass the CCNA exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars 6 devices total?
A Router Simulator needs to have more than 6 devices if you want to really practice anything. This is a good basic simulator for the INTRO material but does not do much of anything to prepare you for the ICND or CCNP material.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but I found online labs CHEAPER and BETTER.
No question, this lab sim is good and provides a nice topology to work with.

BUT, for the coin you have to spend, you may find a better way to go. Check out IPExpert.com. They provide a free CCNA workbook with about 20 labs in it. Then check out www.gettLabs.com. They provide a FREE rack to work through the IPExpert labs. For no money, you can work with REAL equipment. Read the gettLabs Support forums before you start. There is a lot of helpful infomation for CCNA people using their equipment.

I liked Sybex, but it is just too hard to justify the cost.

1-0 out of 5 stars The simulator pales in comparison to the Cisco Press one
I try to be open minded about products, but I think the only reason this product has been popular uis because there was no competition out there. Now that cisco press has released their new CCNA book with NetSim in it, I can't see any value to this far inferior product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exelent virtual lab! Sybex has created a great learning tool
The Sybex Gold lab edition takes most router commands at any piont in the labs, and just like real routers they accept short abriviations of commands, unlike Cisco's v-labs that require the exact command in full syntax for each short activity. The writen lab activities cover about 1/4 of the most important information from the first four semesters of the Cisco Netwoking academy,
's lab program, it very convientaly puts togeather important second semester information with fourth semester information and it does a good job. This lab is not built the same way as the official Cisco lab set up, and you can't change the change the serial lines... ... Read more

Product Description
Provides the networking and internetworking fundamentals you need to approach Cisco certification training with confidence.Clarifies complex topics with simple explanations, test it out sections, review questions, and an extensive glossary of terms and acronyms.Softcover.Amazon.com Review
CCNA JumpStart offers a wide-reaching overview of the topics you'll need to master to get a foothold in either the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Professional) or the CCDA (Cisco Certified Design Associate) study curricula. This entry point for networking neophytes fulfills an important need.

Basic networking concepts are explained in English instead of acronym-speak. The goal of the book is to lay a solid foundation in network technologies, and it hits that mark. The text begins with a practical discussion of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) Model that uses easy-to-follow diagrams to relate the standard's various layers to real-world devices.

The book rapidly marches through the various topologies, standards, and protocols with high-level discussions. A chapter entitled "Devices" introduces the reader to routers, hubs, switches, and other important pieces of networking equipment with clear overviews; however, the coverage of routing protocols--a topic essential for a Cisco-oriented career--was lacking in specifics. The authors introduce key aspects of LAN design, managing a network, and connecting networks to the Internet--this coverage gives the reader a good taste of what a Cisco-related job may entail. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Network types and history, OSI Model, Network Operating Systems, topologies, electrical signals and media, network devices, key standards and protocols, LAN design, network management and WAN implementation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Network or CISCO newbie? Get this one!
This is the book you need to learn basic network stuff. It is not CISCO or Cert. oriented, so i could clasify it between 3 and 4 stars because it serves what it is designed for: teach basic network stuff.

To get more indepth CISCO and network material you should get the Lammle's book: CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, 5th Edition (640-801) -- These 2 books with a good Router Simulator and/or hands on practice, should give you the CCNA cert. with no problems at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book does what it's designed for - getting started.
A jumpstart is defined as a start by use of an external source of power and that's what this book is, an external source of knowledge power. This updated book is setup for and tailored to those who are beginning the journey to the CCNA certification.

I like the way the book is broken down in simple terms but with enough technical jargon to make the newcomers feel at ease with the subject matter. The book covers an overview of each domain and provides the reader with practice questions at the end of each chapter.

The authors have an excellent grasp of the subject matter and attempt to give the reader just what they need to get started. The material, while not heavy into the certification, does make for easy reading and comprehension.

The material seems to technically accurate and does in fact cover the 640-607 exam topics. I like the way the authors have put tips and notes throughout the entire book as well as definitions along the side of the pages.

I think that the book should have included some sort of test engine, once to get the reader started thinking aboutthe exam, but that could be included in the next update. Overall if you are ready to take the first step to CCNA or CCDA then your jumpstart is right here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Highschool Book / Technical School Into
This book is written at a Highscool level. The authors so clearly explain the material in a logical and foundation building approach that the reader barely notices the learning process. If you read this book carefully it can be an excellent introduction.I'm an experienced network administrator and have some certifications; and yet found some of the information helpful.Did I actually learn anything, not much, but I was looking to review and mentally prepare myself for the next step the CCNA exam. This is definately not a college text, but it's an excellent primer as advertised.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you are new to networking.
If you do not know much about networks, this would prove to be a great book for you. This book explains even the most complex networking concepts in plain and simple english, which makes it easier for a beginner to understand. This book will help you build a strong networking foundation, upon which you can build your networking career. If you are planning to take the CCNA exam, it would be a good idea to read this book before you go onto the mainstream CCNA prep books like Sybex's CCNA prep book by Todd Lamelle. If you are a beginner, the mainstream CCNA books would not make much sense. This book was a great help to me and can be to you also. Good luck on your CCNA exam!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for people new to networking.
If you are a beginner and dont know much about networks, this is the right book for you. The book uses plain english to make even complex concepts sound simple. It will help you build a sound networking foundation, which will help you throughout your networking career. If you are planning to go for CCNA and dont know much about networks, i would not advise you to go straight to mainstream CCNA books such as Sybex's CCNA prep book by Todd Lamelle. Those books will not make much sense without the basic knowledge of networking/internetworking provided in this book. This book was a great help to me and could be to you also. Good luck on your CCNA!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Review
I found this book to be well written, concise and to the point. The chapters are broken down in to easy to digest parts, which prepare you for end chapter tests which really tests what you've learned!I would recommend this book for anyone who is serious about passing the CCNA test, and if your really looking for a great resource, this book is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars CCNA FAST PASS
A must for a CCNA candidate. Great read 30 days prior to the examination.
Remember, this book will only help you to refresh your thoughts about the various topics covered in the CCNA exam. For one to pass the exam, extended reading is required/

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH IT
this book is an shortened offshoot of Todd's other book. It doesn't make you learn quicker either. Stay with the full version. And yes, alot of typos and errors................

2-0 out of 5 stars Not well edited
There is a lot of good information in this book, but the figures have missing data and the programming examples have missing commands. It looks like this book was thrown together from other texts and then not checked for consistency. In all, you probably won't pass the CCNA by using this book as a study guide. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
I bought this book specifically for the Cisco networking interview questions. It has a good set of questions to help assess various interviewing candidates.I recommend this book to hiring managers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Network interview questions
This is an excellent text for any IT manager.I was impressed with the coverage for the pre-interview stages and how you can identify those job candidates that are most-likely-to-succeed in the job role.

Better still, I was impressed with the job interview questions. They are designed for a telephone interview, and the IT manager can just ask the questions and compare the responses to the "ideal" answer.

Overall, this book is a real timesaver for anyone hiring a Cisco or Ethernet Network Engineer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review for "31 days before your CCNA Exam". A title worth reading.
In short an interesting title, exclusively written for the Cisco Network Academy students, who are preparing for the Cisco CCNA 640-802 Certification exam. The author Allan Johnson takes a very broad look at practical way to make you understand the concepts in 31 days in a very concise way.He has emphasized on concepts and terminologies used in Cisco CCNA 640-802 Certification exam in an interesting way which definitely helps you to summarize your learning.
Although the title "31 days before your CCNA Exam" aims at Cisco Network Academy students, but it can be used for the Cisco CCNA 640-802 Certification aspirers who does self study.

The author Allan Johnson divided the title suiting it title to 31 chapters, which are so concise you can finish each chapter in an hour. The cream of the title"31 days before your CCNA Exam" is the section called "Exam day and post exam information" which gives the CCNA Certification aspirers guidelines on what to expect after the completion of exam as well as what they should do if they fail to pass the exam on first attempt. One more section that I really liked is "CCNA Skills review and practice" which helps you to practice the CCNA skills which includes most of the CCNA 640-802 exam configurations skills in one topology, which covers topics like VLAN configuration, frame-relay configuration, inter vlan routing, EIGRP,VTP, port security , STP. You can practice those topologies either on Cisco Packet Tracer or GNS3 graphical network simulator.

Overall the title "31 days before your CCNA Exam" is a true gem, but cannot be a only source for passing CCNA 640-802 exam, this title is good for the some one who is looking for quick reference on CCNA 640-802 exam topics in an well organized way. I thank Cisco Press and Jamie in particular for providing me the copy of "31 days before your CCNA Exam"

5-0 out of 5 stars Older material, but still Covers Basic CCNA! Must have!!
This is a wonderful step-by-step day-by-day planner to help prepare YOU for the CCNA Exam, I recommend this book to anyone preparing for their CCNA EXAM, I know from personal experience it is not Easily passible, because honestly---Everyone would have their CCNA now wouldnt they, and we dont want that huh...so study, study, study!!! and this book deffinately helped me!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Study book
I am using this book as a help for my students to get ready for the CCNA.I love it.

2-0 out of 5 stars 31 Days Before Your CCNA Exam: A Day-by-Day Quick Reference Study Guide (Cisco Networking Academy Program)
Its more a booklet than a book with just references to where you actually go over the material. Just like the name implies, just a reference guide.

Its better to have an actual review book that goes over the different topics itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Detailed, Formal, Review of the Four Courses
OK, so you've taken the four courses required for the CCNA exam. You know you need the piece of paper. You have one more task, Take The Test. Now what.

Now what you have to do is go back to all those courses and pull out what you need to review so your memory will be fresh, and of course unfailing.

This book is a guide to the review you need to make in the last 31 days before the test. It is broken down by days, with each day having six or seven pages of material you'll need to know. If you read these few pages and have no problems remembering the background and understanding in full what they are saying, you're in good shape.

But more important, it it brings up a subject that sounds like a foreign language, you'll know where to go back in the various text books to find the details. Remember this is not the course, this is a review of what you need to have gleaned out of the courses.

If you know what's here you'll be well on your way to passing the test. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
i ended up changing my careers to websphere application server.
did not get certified in ccna. i am sure this book will get you certified.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good review just prior to taking test
I took the CCNA classes at a local JC almost a year ago, and was going to take the exam right after; however medical issues caused me to have to wait 8 months before taking the exam.I needed a quick review, and found the Cert Library perfect for that.I also purchased a practice exam from transenders.I took 3 days off from work to study, and between the Cert Library and the practice test was able to scored 974.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a Fantasic Book!!!!!
Listen Guys;

First I want to say that I have successfully completed the CCNA 640-801 Exam and I WOULD NOT have been able to pass my CCNA Exam if it was not for Wendal Odom's Self Study Library.
It is absolutley amazing, from begining to end. It covers everything you need to pass, the CD itself it amazing.
The CD covers everything you need, it has also practice question that are way harder then the exam, that if you can complete those questions the cert is yours..

Good Luck.. And very easy to read and great writing style

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Both books cover more than you need to passe the CCNA exame, but they give you all the basics in networking and routers.
You need to know what details to skip and not to skip.
The simulator on the CD is ok, but the screen saver with the questions is to fast!
They also look good on my bookshelf for future reference!

1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had not bought it.
An electronics technician of 8 years, I have a solid understanding of computers but I am totally new to internetworking and Cisco equipment. In my opinion this book is very poorly written and I do not beleive it was proof-read before it was printed. Since I am not a Cisco pro I cannot detect any of the errors between the information presented and how things really work, but I can detect all the inconsistancies of the information given.

Figures and diagrams that do not correlate with the text leave you wondering which is correct. Topic and chapter review quizes that ask things which were not explained in the text. There are answers provided in the back of the book to these quizes but 1 or 2 out of 10 of every 10 answers are incorrect and not ammended in the current errata. This is very frustrating to me because I have spent too much time reviewing material to figure out why I missed a question - only to find that I didn't.

When I emailed Ciscopress and explained the ammount of errors I am finding I was refered to a very small errata page. I offered to submit a list of items that I felt should be reviewed for accuracy... but should I be the one proof reading this text?

Will the $250 exam also be so flawed?

Product Description
Mike Meyers, the industry expert on professional certification, brings you this concise, affordable, and portable study tool for the CCNA(tm) certification exam. With an intensive focus on only what you need to know to pass the test, plus practice exam software on CD, this Certification Passport is your ticket to success on exam day. Amazon.com Review
Mike Meyers' CCNA Exam Passport is the sort of book you buy when you're studying for the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification even though you feel like you learned everything you need to know at work. It'll help you solidify your knowledge in your areas of experience, and fill the gaps in your knowledge--provided they're not too big. You'll be disappointed if you're expecting to learn the entire CCNA knowledge base from this book--or any other--but then you deserve to be. This book, like the CCNA itself, is for experienced professionals for whom the CCNA exam is a proof of competency, not a goal unto itself.

The travel motif that permeates this book's design frequently seems cutesy and forced--explanations of terms appear in "Local Lingo" boxes; potential pitfalls are marked as "Travel Advisories"--but the information provided stands up under scrutiny. Myers has condensed the CCNA syllabus to its essence and organized it thoughtfully, and as a result he's provided his readers with a useful test-preparation tool. His listings of IOS input and output, combined with simple and uncluttered "hockey puck" diagrams that illustrate network configurations, get right to the point. --David Wall

Topics covered: The subjects Cisco Certified Network Associates are expected to understand, which include the fundamentals of Cisco's Internetwork Operating System (IOS) and the effects of its commands on 1900-series (and similar) routers. Other sections deal with addressing and routing protocols, and with how to configure local- and wide-area networks (LANs and WANs) on Cisco gear. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good*
Well first off i got the 640-607 edition which i bought from barnes and nobles bookshop, i have no idea why that edition doesn't appear on amazon.com but that's another story, anyhow at the time the 640-607 was the current ccna exam, that exam was retired on September 30, 2003, i'm currently scheduled for the 640-801, so whydo i find it(640-607 edition) so darn good, because its quite useful for getting a rock solid understanding of certain concepts that you might be little fuzzy or confused about in the "CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, 4th Edition (640-801) byTodd Lammle" which should be your primary study anyhow. Personally i found the chapters on vlan, frame relay, ip access lists very, very useful in crystalizing those same concepts after i studying them first in the Lammle book.

The only drawback is that there are some typos here and there, but if you studied the Lammle book first, you'll find yourself making the corrections anyway. The primary reason i gave it 4 stars is because there is currently no 640-801 edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Book needs some work
If only this book had authors that were as good with networking as I am with world economic planning, it would be valuable.

--Alan Greenspan

1-0 out of 5 stars 640-507 is a retired test.
.
This book covers a retired exam (640-507).

Passport does not produce the CCNA 640-607 book.

This book will not prepare you for the CCNA any more.
.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
Way too many errors. This is not a good book for someone who does not have any experience. The IP addressing section is a joke.

2-0 out of 5 stars Short (what is good) but having tens of errors.
Lots of errors and all kinds of typos.
Some topics are missed.
Only good if you already know the material so
you will enjoy finding errors and misleading facts.
I am wondering if author ever read his own book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Proven book for IT pro's
I have been industry certified for over 10 years. Highly recommend. Boring to read as all IT books are but will help you to pass the exam and excel in your career path.

5-0 out of 5 stars Todd Lammle at his best..
If you are studying for your CCNA and getting ready to PASS it, you need to have this book. It is very well written and is great to get prepared for your CCNA exam, you will not pass your exam using only this book though, i highly recommend you also get Ciscopress Intro+ICND, the CCNA FastPass is great to repeat stuff you already know because it's very short comparing to Ciscopress books and it has everything you need to remember pretty much, the book comes with a test engine CD, don't trust it too much, it's too easy.. BUT the book is great! Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars great refresher
This book is great for people who already have a strong Cisco background.I have been out of networking for a couple years, pursuing a masters, and I wanted to validate my past experiences on my resume.I read this book and everything came back to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Summary of writer's book of "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801"
Basically this book is a summary of writer's book of "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801". Even the words are the exact same (verbatim)! The only difference is that the "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801" has more discussion of theory and basic knowledge involved. My guess is that the publisher only "cut and paste" and orginize in different style.

I don't say that this is good or bad book. I just want to inform you what you will get from this book. If you have the writer's book "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801", then you may want to consider the following:

1) Do you need another book with redundant content (even with verbatim words)?

2) Do you need a summary book of the "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801"?

If you say "yes" to at least one of the above questions, then go ahead and buy this book. If you say "no", then maybe you want to check out Ciscopress's CCNA exam preparation books. This way, you can get different point of view of how to prepare CCNA exam; which I think will enrich your knowledge and preparation.

Now if you don't have the writer's book of "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801", then you may get this book as a study guide. However keep in mind that as mentioned previously, this book is more of a summary which include minimal background theory. Therefore if you think you don't have proper understanding of such theory, you might want to pick up the writer's book of "CCNA Study Guide Exam 640-801" instead.

Either path you choose, Lamme's book of CCNA preparations have been recognized as a "good book to pass CCNA exam". Please note that this statement is not advertising. This statement have been said by numerous people who had good experience in reading Lamme's and passed the CCNA exam in first try. So you should not go wrong! :)

Final word, I wish you all good luck to pass CCNA exam at first try. Keep in mind that CCNA certification only looks good in resume, however it does not guarantee you to get your "dream job". Heck, even a lot of CCIE have the same problem. Another important side is that you should have various "big-corporation" networking knowledge as well. Think of Cisco certification as "validation" or "formality" of your networking knowledge and skill and NOT as "guarantee" of getting dream jobs :D

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Enough To Pass
I took the 840-801 Exam. I figure that one 90 minute 55 question test is better than two 60 minute 55 question tests. The test had 3 lab simulations, and quite a few questions on OSPF routing. I had taken the cisco academy class online prior to reading this book, and I have done many labs on real cisco equipment. I feel this book is best used as an accessory to the labs. Overall though this is a good book to use as a guide to help you pass the exam. However, I would not suggest picking up this book if you have no experience with networking at all. The book covers what you need to pass the test and not so much the major conceptual knowege that I feel a good netowork tech should have. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars CCNA Security Course Guide
I got this book because I don't like to read the Cisco stuff on the computer. The only thing I don't like this book is there are no pictures in it so you have to refer to the online course.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a single picture
There is no figure in the whole book. You must refer to Cisco Academy Online material to find the associated figures in all chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bound version of the Cisco Academy Course
This book is a bound printed version of the Cisco Network Academy security course. It does not have the fancy animation and graphics as the online course has and actually it references those graphics but if you are like me and don't like reading on a computer screen or like to highlight and make notes in books than this is a good addition to the course. This book nor the lab manual comes with a CD with Packet Tracer labs so you will have to have an Academy account and enrolled in the course to download them but Packet Tracer does not have all the setup for all of the labs for the course so you will need access to actual equipment and the Cisco SDM (or run it in Demo mode) to get the full experience.

This book with the lab manual and a copy of Implementing Cisco IOS Network Security (IINS) also from Cisco Press will definitely help you secure the knowledge needed on the job and passing the Cisco CCNA Security exam. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
This book/booklet is almost useless. Because it does not have any picture, diagram, not even include a table or form. 5-0 out of 5 stars CCMA 3 and 4 Companion Guide
It is a new book and also has the CD with it.An excellent book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review
This is good book to study CCNA Sem 3 and 4but if you could grab other books or read the WEB forums they might give you more Details on some Topics

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for CCNP and Labs
Not only am I a Cisco Networking Academy Instructor, I am one of the official reviewers as listed inside this book.I spent almost a year working with the authors to make sure this book was error free, and full of realistic lab exercises. My students have used this book successfully for over 4 years.

I truly believe that this book is one of the best resources you can use for your CCNP studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars The "Second-Year" title is misleading
After having finished CCNA 1 & 2 (My first Semester of Cisco actually taken during my third year) and now taking CCNA 3 (Second Semester as a senior)I bought this book based on its title and Cisco's name.

It is a great book for CCNA 2.But my second year is Advance routers, Switches followed by CCNA 4 WAN.This book does not cover anything for CCNA 3 or CCNA 4.So why is it called second Semester.

If CCNA 1 was first semester, and CCNA 2 was second semester then it would make sence.Except when you look for the Third-Year Companion Guide...it does not exists. To me it implied CCNA 3 and CCNA 4 and it has nothing to do with either of these.

Just be aware that it is a good book for CCNA 2, however it has no coverage for CCNA 3 or 4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practically useful, well explained details (Cisco Press pls respond)
The guides were a great learning experience to me with a lot of practically useful well explained details. The following comment I sent a few times to Cisco Press - they invite you to do so at the beginning of the book - to which I never ever got a reply which is a bit disappointing for a publisher of such great books. Users who study these books may check if my findings are right.;-)

When studying the guides I came across a section which I think does not accurately describe what is being tried to explain. It concerns the text on page 252 till the section 'Verifying the Initial Configuration of a Catalyst Switch'.Below I will try to explain what I mean by referring to the text in the book and then giving my comments between square brackets.

The first line on the page I think describes what is being explained in the following paragraphs:
'Switching tables can have more than one MAC address mapped to a particular port'.

In the fourth paragraph I think lines 2, 3 and 4 are not accurate. 'The data frame is forwarded to Switch B on Port 2 [in the last line of the previous (3rd) paragraph a Port is referred to alphabetically - Port A.I would prefer consistency here].Switch 2 [with Switch 2 I think Switch B is meant. Please see my previous comment on Port 2 / Port A] looks up the switching table and recognizes the destination MAC address. It [I presume Switch B is meant here] sends the frame to Host F, with MAC address F, via Port 4. [the latter implies that Host F is connected to Port 4 on Switch B.This is important to remember for the following paragraphs. As far as I'm aware it is still not known with which Port on Switch B the connection is made with Switch A]

When Host F replies to Host A, the procedure is reversed. Host A [I think Switch A is meant here] can now update the switching table by mapping Host F to Port 4 [I think that for Switch A data traffic destined for Host F which resides on Switch B, should go to Port 2 because this is the port on Switch A to which Switch B is connected].Switch 2 [or Switch B] can now update the switching table by mapping Host A to Port 2. [this implies that Switch A is connected to Switch B at Port 2 of Switch B.Following the sequence of the data traffic I think that first Switch B can update its switching table after receiving a data frame from Host A on the port which connects Switch B with Switch A.Secondly after Host F replies [then indeed the procedure is reversed) Switch A can update its switching table with the information that data frames for Host F should go to Port 2 of Switch A].

Eventually, Switch A will learn that Host D, Host E and Host F are mapped to Port 4. [this contradicts with the 4th paragraph where it is indicated that the data frame (for Host F) is forwarded to Switch B on port 2 (of Switch A) and Switch B will learn that Host A, Host B and Host C are mapped to Port 2. Summarised:
    1) Port and Switch indication are not consistent A and 1, B and 2 are confused.
    2) Port numbers are not accurately used.My understanding of 'Switching tables can have more than one MAC address mapped to a particular port' is as follows. When Switch A and Switch B are connected with each other via Port 2 (Switch A) and Port 3 (Switch B) then data frames sent from Hosts connected to Switch A to Hosts connected to Switch B will be forwarded to Switch B via Port 2 of Switch A.Data frames sent from Hosts connected to Switch B destined for Hosts connected to Switch A will be forwarded to Switch A via port 3 of Switch B. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Flash Card Practice Kit
This book is full of errors.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
Not really Flash Cards. It has a few pages in the back that has the condensed information. But the writing is small to use as flash cards.Lots of questions and answers instead. Not as helpful as flash cards would have been.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful on reviewing basic stuff
i would say this book helps you to review basic stuff and get clear on similar things, like protocols and OSI layers......I use this book to test myself before 640-607 test.however, the extra software for Palm, i can't make it to work on my N760 and TG50.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk...waste of money and time....
    This is a terrible product.

There are so many errors that it started making me doubt myself - for God's sake!!

Plus, when I did take the 607 CCNA exam, this wasn't even CLOSE to what I saw on the exam.

PLEASE! I want my money back..

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for last minutes before examination
It is a good book for preparing examination. You can use it as an exercise book. Finish one chapter with Sybex and then do the same chapter in this book. Your knowledge can be strength. I think you cannot use one book for examination. ... Read more

Although it's the first step in the Cisco Career Certifications, the CCNA exam is a difficult test. The recent additions of performance-based questions have made it even more challenging. Your first attempt at becoming Cisco certified requires a lot of study and confidence in your networking knowledge. When you're ready to test your skills, complete your knowledge of exam topics, and prepare for exam day, you need the preparation tools found in Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide from Cisco Press.

Completely revised by CCIE(r) and certified Cisco Systems instructor Wendell Odom, Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide is a comprehensive study tool for the CCNA exam. Updated with new content and features to make it easier to read and reference, this book helps you understand and master the material you will need to know to pass the exam. The instructor-developed elements and techniques enable you to maximize your retention of exam topics. "Do I Know This Already?" quizzes open each chapter and allow you to decide how much time you need to spend on each section. Exam topic lists and Foundation Summary tables and figures make referencing easy and give you a quick refresher whenever you need it. Challenging chapter-ending review questions and scenario exercises help you assess your knowledge and reinforce key concepts.

This edition of the book includes special features in both the text and CD-ROM to help you prepare for the new simulation-based questions you will encounter on the exam. These new simulation-based questions are designed to test your hands-on skills. A chapter of lab scenarios allows you to practice applying your knowledge on home-, work, or remote access-based labs. In addition to these exercises, the robust exam engine on the CD-ROM includes the new question types so that you can assess your ability to handle this new challenge. The CD-ROM's test engine includes powerful features that enable you to take practice exams that mimic the real testing environment, focus on particular topic areas, track your progress, and refer to electronic text to review concepts.

Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide is part of a recommended learning path from Cisco Systems that can include simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press.Amazon.com Review
It's almost a prerequisite for employment in the data networking industry (and, if you believe the voice-over-IP people, the voice networking industry as well): The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) proves that you know your way up and down a protocol stack, can tell a bridge from a repeater, and can configure a packet filter. It has some emphasis on Cisco Systems products, naturally, but the CCNA's scope is so broad as to be relevant no matter whose gear you use. Cisco CCNA Exam #640-607 Certification Guide is the definitive work on the CCNA subjects and is one of the two best values among the training aids available (the other is Todd Lammle's CCNA: Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, Deluxe Edition). This book distinguishes itself with the quality of its practice questions and lab exercises, its knowledge-assessment quizzes that help you decide how to use your study time, and its clear and numerous conceptual diagrams.

Wendell Odom, both a Cisco Certified Internetwork Engineer (CCIE) and a Cisco-rated trainer, doesn't spend too much time on test-preparation gewgaws, as do many books with CCNA in their titles. This is a reference and tutorial book through and through, and you'll use it long after you've passed the test (and you will pass the test, if you study Odom's work hard enough). He's a master at combining explanatory text (and graphics) with reference materials (like tables of commands and their modifiers). Plus, there's a CD-ROM containing exam simulations in the newly revised format. --David Wall

Topics covered: Those topics Cisco Systems expects you to understand in order to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) by passing exam 640-607. These include network theory, devices, protocols, and other technologies. There's an emphasis on IP addressing, routing, and security, and plenty of coverage of how to do things at the Internetwork Operating System (IOS) command line. Frame Relay and Novell IPX get covered, too. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars More of the same from Cisco
I'm sorry but this book is not a comprehensive review for the CCNA exam. It offers some material that is not included in other cisco books but that's all. This seems to be the pattern for all cisco books. Info is spread out among many sources and not summarized in any one place. Combine that with poor indexes and incomplete glossaries and you get the picture. I suspect to get a complete high-points review for the CCNA exam you will have to seek a non-cisco publications to do it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete
Don't buy this book for the CCNA exam as the test has changed. Buy the Cisco CCNA Exam #640-801 Certification Guide instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars great book, cd is trash
this review won't matter anyway since cisco retired this exam, but i think the problem with this publication may be symptomatic with other similar titles. the book itself is great. the cd however has a lot of problems with it. i am refering to the test engine. the answers are wrong, the simulations crash a regular pc, and unless you take it with a huge grain of salt, the test with wrong answers seriously makes you doubt your knowledge and shakes your self-confidence. proceed with caution!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book for the 640-607
I have been studying for the CCNA for about 2 years and have read many good books in preparation for the test. However, specific content relevant to the 640-607 is simply not included in the older books.Of course, I don't think I could have passed without the wonderful books by Todd Lammle who seems to have a knack for making impossible concepts understandable.Heather Osterloh and Anthony Chiarella are other good authors who provide relevant, practical information. And many others. But, for me, this was the book with the current, relevant information needed to pass the test. The current test will be unavailable at the end of September, so it is impossible to determine how well this information will relate to the new exam.Nonetheless, the practical, understandable material will certainly overlap all of the objectives. Thanks Wendell Odom.

3-0 out of 5 stars just ok
This book is pretty complete, but its a bit overwrought. It makes things seem more complicated than they really are and at times goes beyond the scope of the CCNA exam.As a few other reviewers already stated, its a good reference book, but not the best study guide. The Todd Lammel study guide from Sybex is better suited to preparing you for the CCNA exam in my opinion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars guide for success
You know, there are alot of books out there, so when I see one as well written as this I like to let everyone know. It didnt matter weather the "ccna lab manual" was talking on a theoretical level or justlaying down the technical information, because when it came to giving thereader a clear and advanced understanding of Cisco routing, thats what thisbook did for me. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know (in plain english ) what Cisco routing is all about. ... Read more
