3-0 out of 5 stars It was OK
The information was fairly topical and there wasn't a whole lot of depth. The book resembles a large collection of notes. If you're looking for in-depth explanations of a technology, you'll need to look elsewhere. If you understand the theory and are just looking for things like timers and default settings then this will help out. I did like how the author included real world examples of why you'd choose to implement a particular solution, instead of just giving the mechanics of how.

The book has a decent amount of example questions. They are helpful at jogging your memory, but don't expect anything that straightforward on the exam.

I hate to harp on editing because it really takes the focus off the content, but more time needs to be spent on editing. Some sentences are nonsensical. Other times, words are miss-spelled and should have been easily caught.

The most memorable and humorous line in the book was a potential answer to one of the chapter questions which read "smoke, huge billowing clouds of smoke."

Overall I'm hard-pressed to recommend the book since it sells for $99. A better value is the "CCIE Routing and Switching Official Exam Certification Guide" which costs less, has more assessment questions, more detail, and better editing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!
Best and most up to date book for the 2006 CCIE R&S Written exam I've seen! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
The content of this book is extremely helpful. I read this book in 3 days, 1 day before taking the exam. It had a few things in it that were not in other materials that I used to prepare for the exam. Everything that is covered on the written is in this book...If you are preparing for the CCIE R&S Written exam, this book is a must-have!

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY well written book
The book was very good. It covers everything under the sun. Make sure you request updated PDF from NLI because it has some extra items in there. The only thing that needs to be improved is the practice test that comes with the book. The test engine is terrible (but the questions were good).

3-0 out of 5 stars Too expansive for what it's worth
This book is good for someone going on a train on the day of the written exam. It may replace your notes, but it cannot be used as the only information source.
It provides you with the most important details and things to rememeber, but wound not provide all you have to know.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very little information
I don't know what the people have seen in this book. It's extremly expensive, is small, and it hasn't the in-depth information I'd expect for a ccie written test. It only outlines information, nothing more. For example: for FIFOs, WFQ, Queuing, QoS and traffic shaping there are.. 13 pages!! OSPF is treated in ¡4 pages!

I haven't taken ccie written yet, but I expect it to be a difficult test, and I think this book is going to be of no use.

5-0 out of 5 stars These guys know their stuff
A+ book for your qualification exam. It is not a 1-stop-shop, but more of an awesome overview which really makes you doublecheck and see if you have covered all the bases. When I asked for my serial #, I also received an indepth PDF file of all the latest changes to the book that reflect the changes in the exam!I HIGHLY recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value but Greatly Abbreviated
The publisher makes no pretense that this is an exhaustive treatment of the material covered by the CCIE exam, but potential buyers should be aware that the material is indeed minimalist: 1. no mention is made of the TCP/IP reference model, the four layer alternative to the seven layer OSI reference model; 2. the section on Show and Debug commands simply states that CCIE candidates will likely be familiar with the commands; 3. the section on password recovery contains only a URL reference to the Cisco site; and 4. the section on BGP and IS-IS are only three and four pages long, respectively.
Still, I recommend these materials. They adhere closely to the revised CCIE written test (modified in late 2002). The cover to a limited extent all new materials within QoS and VoIP. Old materials (like Appletalk) that you no longer need are omited. What is there seems to be accurate and well written. You're better off with this (using it as a starting point) than with a traditional book written to the old test. If this cost $70 I'd have a big problem, but for the price it's a great value. ... Product Description
The Study Guide: This is a collection of all the configs you need to "know cold." It includes critical topics such as OSPF, BGP, ISDN, Frame Relay, etc. It also covers less common topics that are still important, like DLSw+, IPSec, VoIP, ATM, Ethernet Trunking, Tunnels, etc. These are not bulky configs of entire routers - they are condensed configurations focused on each technology. This guide also contains a recommended list of commands to enter into all routers at the actual exam.

Notes from Experience: This is a collection of information and strategies learned from countless hours of working with racks of equipment. It covers all types of topics; here are a few examples:

How prefix lists work /
How to practice dial-up using the AUX ports on your routers /
The difference between stub and NSSA OSPF areas /
How to send BGP communities /
What protocol redistributions are automatic with IPX (RIP, EIGRP, NLSP) /
A table of issues when using various Frame Relay interface types (no subinterfaces, multipoint subinterfaces, etc.) /
The four different ways you can configure each protocol under IRB /
How ATM can be used in the Lab now that ATM LANE is no longer on the Exam /
The six basic steps to configure IPSec /
How to perform password recovery on routers and switches /
Tips & Tricks on Access Lists, Terminal Servers, practicing speed, etc. /
Additionally, this guide contains a strategy for beginning to take the Exam - what steps you should take and in what order to execute them on Exam day, strategies for your Lab network diagram and some thoughts on how to begin configuring the Lab routers. ... Read more

Product Description
A CCIE offers advice on CCIE Lab preparation, and five complex, intermediate-to-advanced level practice Lab scenarios with solution configurations and task-by-task explanations.

This workbook covers many of the crucial lessons that CCIE candidates have struggled to learn for several years. It is not ""cutting-edge,"" though, and does not cover IPv6.It also covers ISDN, DLSW+, and IS-IS, which Cisco has announced as of the publication of this Lulu Press Edition) will soon be removed from the Lab.

The complex redistribution task in Scenario One is arguably worth the price of the book.

The five scenarios can be done on a relatively inexpensive lab, but could be difficult to adapt to the expensive on-line rental racks, because my lab topology incorporated a four-port ""frame-relay switch"" router, while leading vendors tend to use an eight-port ""frame-relay switch"" router. ... Product Description
After the favorable reception of my first CCIE training book, I developed five more intermediate-level scenarios, with solution configurations and task-by-task explanations of all tasks that require explanation.

These five additional scenarios teach many lessons that were not included in CCIE Warm-Up: Advice and Learning Labs. I have kept the labs at the same intermediate level of difficulty. Some of the lessons were covered in Volume One, but many are new to this volume, or are configured using different syntax or in a different context.

Note that Volume II is no longer ""cutting-edge,"" and covers some topics that Cisco has announced will soon be removed from the Lab exam, including IS-IS, DLSW+, and ISDN, and does not include IPv6 coverage. ... Read more
