Editorial Review Product Description This is the first independently-produced CCIE preparation reference to include real-life practice lab scenarios. There are thirty scenarios in all, designed to prepare you for the pressure-packed build-break-restore lab portion of the certification process. It also contains 600 carefully prepared questions that are designed to measure your networking knowledge in the very same way the questions on the actual test will challenge you. But unlike the real test, this reference gives you the answers, including detailed, step-by-step explanations whenever appropriate. And each question is coded by topic and certification tract, so you can use this reference to prepare for Cisco's recently introduced CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, and CCDP certifications as well. In addition to containing all of the questions, explanations, and lab scenarios found in the hard-copy, the accompanying CD-ROM includes software that lets you build your own test by topic, certification track, or both. And when you've completed your personalized test, your score is instantly calculated for you. Customer Reviews (19)
Waste of time and money
ccie prep.com's book
don't be fooled by the name ! Most of topics related to CCIE exam are not covered in this book (check the blueprint ofccie R/S on cisco web site ). Although the tilte of the book is " ...CCIE." , like many "ccie" books on the market now, it hasless thing to do with the real CCIE level ! Publisher should be carefulabout the what this kind of books talk about and don't mislead readers! Don't get fooled !
Not the worse, but not great either
Bought this before it was avail here He cliams that it was a completed materials for preparing for CCIE.It's not, having taken the CCNA and CCNP, it doesn't even come close forthis exams either. Worse, all the questions are taken from his web site,so if you subscribe and you bought the book, you are basically payingOVERPRICE TWICE for the same thing in different package ! Lots of errorsin the software. I never got around to the book because frankly thequestions doesn't come close . I would have put ZERO star if it'spossible ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description You can't fault the authors, though--the CCIE is a daunting exam, covering a wide range of topics in a sometimes-terrifying depth. And given that books tend to fall apart under their own weight if they get over twelve hundred pages, any book publisher has to choose between packing friendliness or information into those compressed slices o' wood pulp. For the CCIE Study Guide, they chose readability, making it perhaps the only beginners' guide to the most advanced certification available. But since you're going to be buying more than one book for this exam anyway, why not get one you'll enjoy reading? And the CIEE Study Guide functions as a stellar overview, explaining the CCIE topics with deft aplomb and some of the best writing you're likely to see in this advanced arena, where technical wizardry is often valued more highly than clarity. The amazing thing about the CCIE Study Guide is the cleanness of the writing: it gets the essentials of large unwieldy concepts across in a few sentences. Which is not to say that you won't have to reread it a couple of times to understand some of the rough spots, but the amount of rereading is drastically minimized from what it could be. Carefully thought-out diagrams spotlight various routing issues, and definitely help with visualization. But even considering the clear writing, the detail is fairly sparse. The responses you'll get to various command lines are sometimes truncated for space, which may cause problems for those who aren't used to sorting through pages of output to find the critical data. The sections on Ethernet frames contain information, but they're not comprehensive. In short, there's a heck of a lot here, but the CCIE will require a bit more in almost every case. There are 20 questions at the end of every chapter, and they're all right--but they're definitely a step down from what you can expect to see on the actual CCIE, and they're all simple multiple-choice questions. No scenario-style questions to be found here, buddy. The answers, sadly, are terse and don't always explain why the other options are wrong. In short, backed with some Web research and a couple of other books, this could be the foundation for a real passing grade--but it's not quite enough. However, if you've lost your way during all of the individual exams and need an overview--or want a refresher course that is technically accurate as far as it goes and is comparatively fun to read--then you won't regret it. This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. --William Steinmetz Customer Reviews (38)
Do not use for today's CCIE R&S test - or yesterday's!
Check the Blueprint for R&S Written
Does not fit for the new exam!!!!
Errors Terrible.
Good but need to supplement The chapter on BGP was quite technical, though, and I appreciated that. I'm used to reading full-length RFC's (i.e., I've read the ones on the original TCP/IP protocol and such additional topics as DHCP, and so forth, and I can tell you from personal experience, they can be quite quite dense). I should mention that I'm a long-time server administrator side person and am currently retired at the ripe old age of 50. When I was working, I really don't need to know that much about Cisco products, since I worked for a big Fortune 100 company and we had whole departments of people handling that side of things, just as I was responsible for the server side of things. But as I now have plenty of time on my hands, I'm currently working through all the books for the CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE that I can find in order to just get somemore background in these important areas, mainly for my own curiousity. Who knows, maybe I'll even take some of the exams. (If the stock market keeps going down, I may have to go back to work anyway!) The Cisco books and the Sybex books have been my main resource for all of this. I agree that you need to have other sources for adequate coverage, and I found that sometimes one author's explanation of something didn't click right away, but then the next author's would. I'm also currently working through the Sybex Switches book, and have found the Cisco Interactive Mentor CD on Switches to be useful also. The CD has interactive labs where you get practice working with the commands and troubleshooting and there is a glossary of technical terms where you can quickly look up something you've forgotten. I don't know if there's one for the CCIE Internetwork exam, but if there is, it might be worth checking out as another study aid. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Cisco Certification is the largest and best book in this three-pack, although it's distinctly not a beginner book--and it may even go above the heads of many intermediate CCIE candidates. The book has been written as a preparation guide for the nefariously tough two-day CCIE lab, and it shows in the methodology. Rather than giving generic advice and tutorials, author Andrew Caslow states that he wants to get you to the point where you can look at a broken system and see instantly where the flaws lie. As such, the chapters are tersely written with not a word wasted, each sentence barreling onward toward the uncompromisingly complex problem-solving exercises at the end of each chapter. If paragraphs like, "In fact, a DLSw session terminates both source-route bridge RIFs and LLC2 sessions at both ends of the DLSw connection. A DLSw peer will also terminate LLC2 traffic that traverses directly connected Ethernet, FDDI, X.25 and SDLC networks" don't scare you, this is the book for you. Keep in mind, however, that if you skip over so much as a single concept, your understanding of the rest of the chapter may fall apart like a house of cards-- this book has been designed for minimal space and maximum information, i.e., nothing is repeated. But careful and diligent reading will get you thoroughly prepared for the toughest test in the Cisco stable. The exercises are taken from real-life networks and involve all aspects of networking--and the eventual goal of spotting problems quickly and efficiently is never forgotten--a definite strength. As comprehensive as Cisco Certification, Routing in the Internet is a deep but somewhat dull book (even by computer standards) that rewards persistence. The book is authoritative, and a thorough reading will give you an in-depth understanding of the major routing protocols that will stand you head and shoulders above the rest of the field. But the book is extremely academic, written in textbook form, and most of Routing deals with theory, not hands-on experience. However, there are a lot of theories and potential situations covered, and the packet-level concepts are critical to developing a CCIE's troubleshooting capabilities, making it a must-read for the CCIE candidate. ATM, Volume III: Internetworking with ATM is similarly content-rich, but it's also the weakest in the set. Packed with many simple yet effective diagrams and a text that relies heavily on said drawings, Volume III is another book that's not for the novice or even an intermediate networking student, and it deals with how ATM interacts with various protocols and topologies in a truly networked environment. While a valuable read, one questions whether a better book couldn't have been placed in this slot. A $35 savings from buying all of these books separately, the books here seem slightly odd choices--Cisco Certification is geared toward lab preparation, while ATM and Routing are meant to be shelf references, to be read once and then pulled down when you need them. Neither fish nor fowl, it's not a bad investment for the CCIE candidate or the CCIE needing reference... but more books will be needed to flesh out either side. --William Steinmetz Customer Reviews (4)
The 2001 edition is a nice addtion to my technical library. The three-book set is comprised of material starting with Book 1 - Routing in the Internet.Over 370 pages covering topics like the Internet and the architecture of the Internet. Also IP v4 and v6 are discussed and compared and then you begin to delve into the routing protocols, both interior and exterior. The book finishes up with new ideas such as multicasting and overall seems to layout the Internet in fairly easy language. Book 2 - Voice over IP is new to the set and is written by Uyless Black.Black starts this excellent book off with an overview of telephony and the Internet. Also covered is DSPs, Voice coders, DSL, modems, PPP, the role of the ISP, performance issues, VoIP Protocols, Voice alternatives and ISDN. Black is very good at breaking down the subject matter and making sure the reader can understand the concepts. Finally comes book 3 - Cisco Certification: Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIEs 2nd Edition, written by 2 well-respected CCIEs and authors. Over 900 pages broken down into six parts, part one is the configuration of the hardware. Part 2 is breakdown of IP and the configurations of the routing protocols like RIP, OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP and BGP. Part 3 deals with non-ip routing, part 4 is bridging and part 5 is for management. Overall the entire collection is some of the best technical material I have seen so far.
CCIE here I come!! In book 1 of the 3 - ATM Volume III - the entire world of ATM is taken apart and dissected for you. Encapsulation, frame relay, DXI and FNNI, LNNI and ARP, multiprotocols over ATM are but a few of the topics discussed in great detail. In the second book - Routing in the Internet 2nd Edition - the book is broken down into 4 parts. Part1 discusses IP and associated protocols including IP V.6. Part 2 takes a look at the interior routing protocols like RIP and OSPF, it does breakdown both RRIP1 and RIP2. Part 3 is the exterior protocols like BGP and CIDR. Finally in part 4 you have explanations of new developments in multicasting and mobile hosting. The book is well written and well documented and the author really gives a complete look at the internet and how routing is used. The final book - Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers and Switches for CCIE is written by Andrew Bruce Caslow a CCIE himself. Caslow has written several other book on the CCNA certification and as with the other books this is an excellent reference manual. The advanced routing techniques like ISDN and DDR as well as excellent coverage of the Catalyst 5000 switch are some the topics Caslow goes over is this book. Caslow also sheds light on ATM and extensive detail on IP Addressing and routing. Protocols like RIP, IGRP, EIRGP and OSPF as with non-IP routing protocols AppleTalk, DECNET and IPX are broken down for you. Caslow's knowledge of bridging, which includes source route, transparent and translation is nothing short of tremendous. Caslow's book has sample scenarios, about the only thing it doesn't do it take the test for you. Prentice Hall has a great number of book on computers and networking and you should checkout their website today. Overall this book can be used as a handy reference manual and a study guide for Cisco tests. The price is small in comparison to what you get.
Hard to rate ... But two other books are completlydifferent. First of all, they are not about cisco. It's just a generaltheory, a lot of packet structure diagrams and protocol description.Language sometimes is very dull and dry. Many topics, especially in the ATMbook are beyond the scope of CCIE exam. Routing book contains a lot ofinteresting information about routing history, current problems andpossible ways of future improvements. Probably, these books are interestedto some readers, but it's not the best choice for CCIE preparation. I put4 stars just because Caslow book is so good that it makes whole libraryuseful too. But I'd strongly recommend to buy this one book only and spendthe rest of money to some other tutorials.
Help you very much for prepare for CCIE Written test ? The entire book containsoutput from numerous working configurations. These examples confirm thatthe authors did not just throw together another theory book, but have takenthe time and effort to create scenarios that can be recreated by thereader. A CD accompanies the book, and contains complete configurations sothat the reader can copy and paste them into home lab hardware. In short, this book is one of the most interesting books concerning certificationtopics. After you read these 3 set books, I guarantee you pass the CCIEwritten test. Buy it, and plan to stay up late the night of your purchase. You won't be disappointed. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Internetworking (which editor Laura Chappell definesas that which ties LANs, WANs, software, and extraneous devicestogether) is effectively put in historical perspective in the firstchapters. In addition, LANs, WANS, and the OSI model are all clearlydefined both individually and in relationship to each other. Theremaining chapters of part 1 address the OSI layers and data transportin more detail as well as basic router operations andconfiguration. The section on networking protocol suites isstraightforward in its explanations of TCP/IP, Internetwork PacketExchange (IPX), and AppleTalk in terms of the Cisco networkingworld. The "Wide-Area Networking" section addresses the complex butessential topics of WAN connections, as well as X.25 and frame relayconfiguration. In the eight appendices tucked in the back of this bookyou'll find answer keys for those pesky tests, discussions of DECnetand Banyan VINES, and a host of other topics.--SarahL. Editorial Review Product Description As with most other books in the Exam Cram series, this one is definitely not an introductory, or even a mid-level, book. What the series attempts to do is give a very concise collection of all of the facts that you'll need to remember to pass the test, which becomes far trickier when going into the CCIE; a large portion of the exam questions deal with elaborate and complex scenarios that are near impossible to "cram" into someone's brain at the last moment. Read our lips: If you're not at least 80% prepared already, this book won't help you. And a lot of the experience that you'd need to pass the CCIE won't come from any book--only hands-on work and extensive real-world preparation will help you. But, if you're close, and looking to clarify all of those skulking confusions that lurk in every test-taker's mind, this book will get you over the hump. In short, this is the most concise edition of line-level networking protocol information that you could have. The book is organized in a mostly linear fashion, moving from basic networking theory and going all the way to WAN technologies and security configuration. The writing is extremely dense, but concise (a hallmark of the series), and walks you through the various protocols and configuration information very clearly, sometimes going bit-by-bit through how information gets put on the wire. The reasons behind some of the decisions that are used to decide between two competing protocols--like, say, RIP and EIGRP--are covered briefly. The CCIE Exam Cram even seems to know that it's too small a book to provide the lowdown on complex interactions; most of the time, it even doesn't pretend that these topics will come up by themselves as a question--if Exam Alerts and Tips is anything to judge by, anyway. It seems to be aimed towards providing you with a gut-level knowledge that'll give you the tools to differentiate between two close calls and troubleshooting the source of some seemingly bizarre conflict; in that, it does a fine job. Intense amounts of information are given here for you to memorize, all of which is critical for the grueling CCIE exam. Nothing can substitute for experience, but the information that's provided here might give you the critical edge that you need. Using this as your last-minute refresher after poring over all of the Cisco official guides and lab exercises would be a good idea, too. The sample questions tend to be fairly easy, giving readers a choice between simple configuration questions and questions on what protocol is suited for a particular task; not heavyweights, by any measure, but helpful in reinforcing knowledge. In short, as a final run-through before you actually step into the lab, this book is unparalleled. But, if you haven't done your homework, prepare to be walloped. --William Steinmetz Customer Reviews (30)

Please do NOT use this book I began to compile a list of typos, but totally gave up.
Don't Buy This Book if You Want to Pass the Exam!
A Glimpse of the Universe Why only 3 stars?Because it's just filler for other texts.A starting point to guide you to other authors. For that reason alone, I can't give it 4 stars (Swartz gets 4 stars). I passed the Exam today and I can say that this book assisted.I believe I would have passed without it, but my score was probably bumped a few points because of it.If you are borderline, it could make the difference between a Pass/Fail. Editorial Review Product Description A guide to understanding the troubleshooting tools, commands, and methodologies that enable reliable performance for remote access services The ranks of telecommuters, remote employees, and mobile users are growing every day and their communications needs are expanding just as rapidly. Advancements in remote access technologies allow users to become less dependent on the office and to increase productivity without sacrificing the convenience of direct access to the corporate network. Convenient, secure, and reliable connections are crucial to corporate reliance on remote access. Customers, employees, and partners should connect seamlessly, as if they were in company headquarters. They also must count on the ability to log in and to remain connected at an expected level of performance. Understanding how to deploy remote access services is the first step to realizing the benefits that these services offer but inconsistent performance or denial of service threaten productivity gains. It is critical that these services not only be available but also perform as promised. Troubleshooting Remote Access Networks helps you understand underlying technologies and gain insight into the challenges, issues, and best practices for supporting remote access networks. This book focuses on the enterprise portion of a remote access network and includes service provider troubleshooting and design information that helps both enterprise and service provider network engineers understand the larger picture of remote access networks. This book opens with a section covering fundamental concepts. Design issues, provisioning, DSL and cable connectivity options, central office operations, authentication techniques, and troubleshooting tools are all addressed in this part of the book, forming the foundation upon which later sections are built. Each of the subsequent four parts examines a key remote access technology, including dial, ISDN, Frame Relay, and VPNs. Each part is a self-contained tutorial, providing foundation review, design and configuration overviews, and troubleshooting techniques. Each part concludes with a series of real-world support scenarios that represent proven best practices for remote access network management, drawn from tens of thousands of cases handled by the Cisco Remote Access team. Whether you are looking for a design, configuration, and support reference guide, or need a preparation tool to help you prepare for the CCIE exam, Troubleshooting Remote Access Networks provides you with expert-level solutions to help guarantee the availability of remote access services. Great resource for Remote Access operations, implementation, and architecture staff alike
Great book for WAN, not great for CCIE
WOW!!! Awesome Book. A must have
Caffeine and Concentration Essential The author does a decent job of explaining the technical concepts, but he has a tendency to get wordy.Maybe I'm having a bad month for cognitive focus, but I find myself "phasing out" while reading this book.If I really concentrate, I can follow the author for a chapter, but trying to hammer out day after day of concentration on this book is really hard.I'd recommend it as a troubleshooting guide or as a desk reference, but as straight ahead CCIE study material, it's too cumbersome.Read a chapter of this book, then go read a section of another CCIE book, then come back here for a few more chapters. That might make this thing easier to take. The book states that the reader should have at least CCNA level skills to read this book.I have to disagree and say that the reader must have passed the BCRAN exam for the CCNP before reading this book. The book is intended to teach troubleshooting, so you'd better know the basics of the technologies and their implementation prior to reading this book. Also, if you're not in the mood for TLA & FLA's (Three and Four Letter Acronyms), then you'd better get in the mood before tackling this book. All of this may make it sound like I don't like this book. That's not true. When I'm in the right mindset, which is to say that the room is right, and the noise level is right, and I have the right level of caffeine, then I can read a section of this book and learn a LOT about the material that he's trying to convey (he IS an expert, after all).On that note, I have to say that I especially enjoyed the section on VPN technologies, as my personal experience and studies are quite light on the subject up to this point. It really piqued my interest in the subject. So much so that I think one of my next reads will be the Cisco Secure VPN Guide. I'm reading this book as part of my studies for the CCIE written exam.I'm not sure if I needed this much information prior to the written exam.I'm sure I probably could have gotten by with a re-scan of the BCRAN book, but I'm also sure that I will be coming back to this book again and again during my preparations for the lab exam. On my 5 ping rating scale, I give it a 3.
Authority of an Instructor !!! Section 1 is a must read for everyone interested in Remote Access Network Technologies from the end user customer, planning to procure remote access service/solution to the service provider customer support engineers whose job it is to ensure customer satisfaction and the infrastructure engineers who are faced with ensuring the health of the system. This section quickly lay out the fundamental issues in Remote Access Network technology, as much as can fit in less than 150 pages, and still provide a good feel for the issues at stake. Chapters 5 to 22 are where the real juice is. The almost 700 pages of text is divided into 4 modules, each dealing with one of Dial, ISDN, Frame Relay and VPN, in that other. A feature I found very useful is the modular nature of the book, providing easy reference for the information you need. In practice, Engineers may not have to work with all technologies, but still find the book handy as a reference to the technology that interests them as well as a quick guide to troubleshooting that technology. Chapters 5 through 8 describes dial technology and troubleshooting issues and chapters 9 though 13 explores ISDN technology. Chapters 14 to 18 is on Frame Relay technology and as is the pattern throughout the book starts with an overview of frame Relay technologyin 14, moving on to design solutions in chapter 15 and configurations in 16. chapter 17 explores the topic of troubleshooting frame relay network detailing specific commands and pointing to specific tools, while chapter 18 reviews some troubleshooting scenarios including new install, mismatched dlci, traffic shaping, ip multicast and even host migration. The coverage of VPN is quite detailed (chapters 19 through 22) with description of VPN categories, link technologies and a break down of IKE an IPSec technologies providing the ground work for a full chapter on design and configurations which then presented a clear case for the troubleshooting chapter with Cisco equipment as benchmark. Chapter 22looks at some real life VPN troubleshooting scenarios. Of course the application environment is windows. Linux operating systems users of the popular Cisco VPN software will have to get resources from Cisco website. Editorial Review Product Description As is common to this genre, the book is replete withconfiguration commands, diagrams, and tables. However, it maintains amore pragmatic tone than most as each chapter ends with some or all ofthe following elements: a summary, a professional developmentchecklist, references for further study, and a "Can You Spot theIssues?" section containing networking word problems. The answers tothese problems are found in one of the book's appendices. Alsoincluded is a section devoted to test preparation and test-takingtechniques that details the skills assessed during the CCIE exam aswell as commonly encountered testing landmines. An admirable effort, this granular but well-organized tome certainly appears to meet itsstated goal. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt Customer Reviews (62)
For it's time, this book was a 'Must-Have' for the CCIE R&S Lab
Very good condition
Too Old
That was then, this is now...
Aged, but still a classic. The second edition is dated now.The written exam has changed as of August '02, with the practical test due to change in November '02, but this does not render the book completely out of date.No CCIE study guide pretends that it can cover the subject completely without other references, and this is no exception. If you keep an eye on the Cisco CCIE blueprint and supplement your reading with more specific tomes on the recent additions to the exam you will find the methodologies in this book become the core of your exam strategy. The 3rd edition of this book is currently being prepared and should be available by the end of 2002. ... Read more |
