Product Description
This comprehensive study guide covers all exam objectives for the CCIE Lab exam--one of the most difficult tests to pass. You'll get details on the latest topics, including voice technology, VPN, ATM, and security, plus more than 100 network-based scenarios and a CD-ROM containing case studies and complete configuration examples.Amazon.com Review
The best way to learn about internetworking is to build a system of linked networks, play with it until it breaks, build another in a different way, and repeat the process indefinitely. Only by seeing how real machines communicate across real wires can you expect to become prepared for real-life network operations (in which you attempt to do the same thing, but without the "until it breaks" part). All-In-One CCIE Lab Study Guide takes you through the experimentation process, helping you develop a sizable body of knowledge about Internet protocols and the equipment that implements them. In 86 laboratory exercises, all well-designed and thoroughly debugged, authors Stephen Hutnick and Michael Satterlee reveal the intricacies of protocols, routing, bridging, and more, as implemented on Cisco Systems gear.

The exercises read like something out of a high school physics textbook, with equipment lists and specific setup instructions to follow (this is a good thing). Lists of configuration files (which also appear on the companion CD-ROM), highlight and comment on lines that are key to whatever concept the lab is meant to highlight. Then you learn how to test the configurations and what responses to expect from your experimental setup. It's a fascinating approach that's perfect if you have the equipment (sometimes considerable) needed to duplicate the configurations. It's only slightly less great if you have to read along without doing all the experiments. --David Wall

Topics covered: The subjects needed to pass the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) laboratory exam (the implementation of various networking protocols on Cisco products). Covered protocols include ISDN, frame relay, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), Appletalk, IPX, and the TCP/IP suite. Detailed coverage of routing protocols (including OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP, and BGP) makes this book stand out. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not even close.
I am sorry to say this book is full of errors and does not even come close to the complexity level needed. There are far better Lab preparation books available. Don't throw your money away on this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awsome CCNP - CCNA Study Aid
This book was the reason i was able to pass my CCNA, and CCNP tests to this date.

The review section at the beginning of each chapter, helps you reinforce what you learned in the past, and helps you fill in any blanks you might have had.

Once you start doing the labs, your vision will become clear and you will start hearing yourself say: "Ohh so that's how it works" ...
This book is not really a good source to study for your CCIE however its an invaluable tool for your CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, CCDP study time...

3-0 out of 5 stars My opinion
I used this book during my early prep for the R/S lab. There are errors, but still a pretty good book. It however is not even close to the complexity or depth of knowledge required on the actual lab. Just my opinion (and yes, I am a CCIE).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best CCIE book on the market
By far this is the best CCIE book I have purchased to date. It is well written has great technologies overviews (no fat) and great lab scenarios.Well worth the money I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did anyone proof read this book before it was published?
The format of this book has good intentions. Covers a topic, has a brief lab, sounds good, looks good at first.

The biggest problem is that almost all of the labs have some type of confusing inaccuracy. Most of the lab diagrams contradict the accompanying configs (interfaces names and IP addresses are mixed up). Many diagrams show more than one interface on the same router with the same interface name...huh?

It looks like the technical reviewer missed a thing or two... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review resource for written exam prep
Well written, covered v2 exam blueprint. Highly recommended as a review guide before taking exam. Included tests in cdrom is big plus. Used it and passed re-cert.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to advanced concepts
This book is an excellent introduction into advanced Routing & Switching concepts. I have just completed the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) examinations, and chose this book as the next logical step. I've already been very pleased with the decision.

The text is understandable and well written and can easily be studied from. I've started preparing for the CCIE and am working through the book as it is written, understanding and memorizing as I go (I also use the computer software "Supermemo").

One thing I will point out: the CCIE Written Exam Blueprint (available on Cisco's website) is changed to version 3.0 as of mid-June, 2007. This book is written for the previous version of the blueprint and doesn't include all aspects of IPv6. MPLS (another new topic for the CCIE Exam) is included in the appendix of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but lacking some detail
If you get your CCIE, you will be taking written exams for the rest of your career (I'm 12-year CCIE, I just passed my sixth written), so a study guide is a wise investment. This is a pretty good one - but even though its over a thousand pages long, it still lacks details in some areas.

Although it is common to buy some routing protocol books on top of these, that's not the areas that I found it to be weakest. Several protocols in the LAN section aren't discussed in sufficient detail, and the wireless sections look like they just got burned out and threw together something quickly. You had better plan on additional research on these topics.

The CD sample questions are sometimes helpful to point out weak areas, but don't expect to see many (or perhaps any) of them on the exam. The PDF version was extremely useful - not for reading but for searching. If I was looking for information on a protocol, I could search the PDF and find the page number, which matched the book. I always find books easier to read than PDFs. ... Read more

  • Identify and resolve common implementation failures by evaluating real-world troubleshooting scenarios

As organizations increase their dependence on networks for core business processes and increase access to remote sites and mobile workers via virtual private networks (VPNs), network security becomes more and more critical. In today's networked era, information is an organization's most valuable resource. Lack of customer, partner, and employee access to e-commerce and data servers can impact both revenue and productivity. Even so, most networks do not have the proper degree of security. Network Security Principles and Practices provides an in-depth understanding of the policies, products, and expertise that brings organization to this extremely complex topic and boosts your confidence in the performance and integrity of your network systems and services. Written by the CCIE engineer who wrote the CCIE Security lab exam and who helped develop the CCIE Security written exam, Network Security Principles and Practices is the first book to help prepare candidates for the CCIE Security exams.

Network Security Principles and Practices is a comprehensive guide to network security threats and the policies and tools developed specifically to combat those threats. Taking a practical, applied approach to building security into networks, the book shows you how to build secure network architectures from the ground up. Security aspects of routing protocols, Layer 2 threats, and switch security features are all analyzed. A comprehensive treatment of VPNs and IPSec is presented in extensive packet-by-packet detail. The book takes a behind-the-scenes look at how the Cisco PIX(r) Firewall actually works, presenting many difficult-to-understand and new Cisco PIX Firewall and Cisco IOS(r) Firewall concepts. The book launches into a discussion of intrusion detection systems (IDS) by analyzing and breaking down modern-day network attacks, describing how an IDS deals with those threats in general, and elaborating on the Cisco implementation of IDS. The book also discusses AAA, RADIUS, and TACACS+ and their usage with some of the newer security implementations such as VPNs and proxy authentication. A complete section devoted to service provider techniques for enhancing customer security and providing support in the event of an attack is also included. Finally, the book concludes with a section dedicated to discussing tried-and-tested troubleshooting tools and techniques that are not only invaluable to candidates working toward their CCIE Security lab exam but also to the security network administrator running the operations of a network on a daily basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to learn Cisco's implementation of IPSec - not just for CCIEs
CiscoPress's "Network Security Principles and Practices" by Malik is truly an awesome work. The book weighs in at over 750 pages, and not a page is wasted. The book is split up over multiple sections (Intro to Network Security, Building Security into the Network, Firewalls, VPNs, IDS, AAA and ISP Security). I have found this book of value as I pursue my CCIE Routing & Switchng lab and to better enhance my basic understanding of Cisco's vision towards network security. I also used this book to prepare for my CCSP and CISSP studies.

Practically on every page is either a diagram or detailed configuration explaining the subject at hand. In particular, the configuration examples are extremely helpful as the configs, themselves, are appended with detailed notes of their syntax. Chapter 13, IPSec, is probably the best one-chapter discussion on Cisco's implementation of IPSec and VPN I have found anywhere (and I have over 50 CiscoPress books). Another testament to it's superb level of expertise is the few and far between typos or errors that I have found.

One item to note - you will need to block off a few weeks (or months) to fully understand and appreciate the value of this book. I reference this book often, as I find information in this book I cannot find documented or presented the same way in other books.

I give this book 5 pings out of 5:
!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid, clear, and useful
Very clear explanations of the core security technologies. The author doesn't shy away from the hard subjects, and makes them quite accessible. The IPSec chapter is the best explanation of the subject I have seen anywhere.

I used this book to pass the CCIE security written exam, and highly recommend it. It is also a very good reference for practicing consultants and network security architects.

5-0 out of 5 stars To be added to your 'essentials' list of books
Very, VERY good. The IPSec chapter alone is worth the book, and the AAA chapters are _great_. Saadat has been able to explain in a great technical level and very clearly subjects which you're going to find in your day to day work - if working with Cisco and security. But not only that: chapters about IPSec, RADIUS, TACACS, are of value even if you do not use Cisco gear.

Missing from the book: a better chapter on NAT, PPTP. Saadat should write the 2nd edition adding those two topics, updating the IDS section, IPSec (including NAT-T), maybe add a little something about SSL VPNs, PIX 7.0 ? The section on ISP security could also benefit from a refresher (CoPP, uRPF?)

4.5 starts because it shows it age - otherwise, 5 stars for sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Cisco Security Certifications
This is one of the first books I read for anyone preparing for CCIE Security. I found this book to be very comprehensive in its approach. The author has combined all the network security technologies in one book and now this is tough. It starts with an Introduction and then builds on that. It covers the whole nine yards VPN's Firewalls, IDS, Access Control. The Troubleshooting part of the book is very helpul to working professionals as it starts with troubleshooting NAT and then covers everything from Firewalls (PIX and IOS), VPN's, IDS and AAA. A lot of issues can be resolved just using this part of the book. I recommend this book as it will surely help everyone looking for everthing about security. This book is a must read for professionals pursuing the CCSP and CCIE Security Certifications.
Niloufer Tamboly, CISSP

5-0 out of 5 stars Best ever book from Cisco
Not only for exam preparation, this book is for every Cisco lover. Covers a lot of stuff, took me over 2 months to finish but I feel way more knowledgeable now. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not up to CCIE standard
Sorry Cisco I love your stuff but this book falls well below the standard I would expect from one of your publications. I'm a CCIE I passed my lab Jan 2001 and took my recertification 2 years ago in IP routing. My job has changed a little since then and I no longer have as much routing exposure as I used too I'm now all LAN at a large datacenter and some OSPF. Anyway I got this book to help me with my second recert, I wanted a quick read it once and pass it guide. Well with the CCIE its just not possible, sorry but its simply not that type of certification not even the written you need to know this stuff DEEP, no shortcuts IMHO.

This book promises a lot but simply does not live up to it, as a CCIE I used this book to take my recert and failed. So I hit the real books, the one's that got me through the exam and lab 6 years ago, TCP/IP Volume 1 and now Volume 2 by Jeff Doyle, Lan switching for CCIE's, and Internet routing architectures from Halibi (BGP is also covered in the Doyle V2 book now), and passed the written exam with a 93%. I would also add a Cisco specific QoS book to the reading list as well for the 350-001 exam as there was a lot of QoS in the exam and Doyle does not cover it.

The titles above brought a lot stuff flooding back to me, stuff I forgot and stuff that the certification guides like this one were not able to restore from my memory.

Believe me there are no shortcuts to getting this I should know it cost me over $300 for the exam and 160 bucks on 2 certification books to find that out, oh yeah this also applies to the flash card book for the CCIE written also available from Cisco.

Positives are that the book does have a good general coverage of the subjects for day to day referance but no where near deep enougth and links to websites with the rest of the info you need but with this book and the flashcard book alone your not going to pass this the written exam. Its way to deep an exam for that save your money and get the Doyle books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Way Under Expectation
    Hi,
I'm a CCNP and CCDA and I've always used CiscoPress Certifications books to prepare my exams.
I bought this book hoping that, as the others, it would give me all the elements to pass the test. Oh...if I was wrong.
Soon after starting reading it I realized that this book wasn't teaching anything. Each topic was just mentioned and not really unfold as the exam requires.
I wasted a week reading it and...you know what? At the end I studied on my CCNP books, integrating what was missing with documents on Cisco CCO. I passed the written test this morning at the first try.
Don't waste you money on this. Please

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete Material
I bought this book in hopes of having an all in one resource for the CCIE written exam. This book barely touches the surface of some very important concepts for the CCIE written exam and is not enough for any real world task.

Another issue I have, is the author uses all the acronyms, but doesn't write them out.I have a great deal of experience in working with many of these technologies, so it's not such a big deal for me, but others may find this frustrating.

The CCNP level books (Routing, Switching) cover the technologies in much greater detail. The exam certification guide is extremely weak, and maybe good for a quick refresher prior to takeing the exam, or perhaps recertifying.Otherwise, I'd look for better material.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Not a One-Stop Shop
I am reviewing the CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide (ISBN 1587200538), which is the official preparation guide for the CCIE R&S exam from Cisco Press. The book weighs in at 688 pages, which is about right for a book of its type. The problem is that the type of book that it is doesn't really work for an exam like the CCIE.If we were talking about the CCNA or one of the single CCNP exams, I'd say "sure, you can get it all in one book", but not the CCIE.This book is a lot like reading a menu in that you get enough information to get you interested in a topic and decide if you need to learn more. The problem, however, is that in the case of the CCIE exam, you don't need a menu, you need a cookbook! The actual purpose of this book, as stated in the Foreword, is that it should act as a late-stage exam preparation tool to help you assess our strengths and weaknesses and focus your study.Basically, once you've gotten to that late stage, you've been reading for about six months and all this book does is breezes over all of the stuff that you've already learned.Occasionally, you might hit something you haven't read before and might take a moment to fill in that particular gap, but largely you feel like you're wasting your time.A book covering this wide a range of topics is easy to stall out on.If you feel like you're not getting anything out of your valuable reading time, you really have no motivation to keep going.I personally stopped this thing halfway through, read a book on poker and then came back to it.

I think a better approach to future editions of this book might be to rewrite it as a preliminary study tool for the CCIE.They could take each of the blueprint objectives and write a chapter which explains in detail what knowledge and experience you need to have in order to pass that objective.Readers could use the end-of-the-chapter assessments to make a judgment call on how much studying they need to do on that objective. Each chapter should also make suggestion of where the reader could go to get additional knowledge on the topics covered in that chapter.See, what I was missing early on in my CCIE studies was a "test prep quarterback" to point me in the right direction.I think this book would keep the reader's attention better if it was recommended as the first thing to do in the test prep process, not the last.

Okay, okay... I think I've dwelled on the negatives quite long enough. There are some things I really liked about this book.First off, since it's widely known that CCIE candidates can never get enough practice questions, it'll be no surprise that I liked having the practice exam on the CD.I also liked the Scenarios at the end of each chapter. They really made you think and try to apply what you've read.I'd like to see an entire book of them.I also found the authors style to be very readable.Anthony Bruno took the challenge of writing a book that covers the entire CCIE blueprint and got it all into 688 pages. That takes a very concise writing style, and he pulls it off.

In conclusion, I'd have to say that I'd recommend this book to others, but as a preliminary guide and not as a final exam prep tool.Someone coming in cold, or even coming off of the CCNP exams, would really benefit from this book as indoctrination into the level of study necessary to prepare for the CCIE.I'd warn them, however, that this book isn't meant to be used as a one-stop shop. You really must read other books and get a lot more information off of CCO in order to prepare properly for the CCIE.

I give this book a 3 on my 5 ping rating scale.
    !!..!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good resource for the test
I am really surprised that this book is even passed off as a resouce to use by Cisco to pass the test. It touches on alot of things but only at a surface level. If you do pass the written it will not be because you read this book. Take my advice and the advice of others: save your money and spend it on the book by Rob Payne et al.

This is somewhat of a shock and disappointment because I used Bruno's CCDA book to prepare for that test and it was an excellent resource. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Review
Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) works great for getting Internet Protocol (IP) traffic to move reliably over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) links, particularly when there's a strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirement or a probable need to scale up. Vivek Alwayn, an experienced CCIE who helps service providers implement MPLS for a living, shares his considerable knowledge of MPLS in Advanced MPLS Design and Implementation. After a brief introduction to MPLS--it should be more of a refresher, really, for people who already know what the technology is about--Alwayn brings out scores of details that define how MPLS works, and how it can be made to work better. His best technique is to present a scenario, declare some design goals for it, and proceed to explain how to achieve those goals. Reading these case studies is really enjoyable from an engineering perspective (even if yours is not a Cisco shop), and they feature enough step-by-step instructions for the IOS command line to never leave you guessing about how to translate the approach to your own equipment.

In addition to solving model problems, Alwayn takes time to explain why MPLS works the way it does. In lots of cases, this means calculations. He shows how LCNs are allocated to port groups, how link metrics are evaluated to yield desirable and undesirable results, and how Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs) and Label Virtual Circuits (LVCs) are carved out of a port. He's also generous with configuration listings. In a typical exercise, he'll show complete configurations for all routers involved, even if there are eight or nine of them. --David Wall

Topics covered: Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) for people who already have a handle on what it's for and want to use it on their service provider networks and corporate backbones. With lots of command detail and configuration specifics (which are particular to Cisco Systems routers) and engineering discussions (which are not), the author explains how to implement MPLS for Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) over both Internet Protocol (IP) and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). Beyond that, there is coverage of traffic engineering, Quality of Service (QoS), and migration. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MPLS for Advanced studies but objectivity required.
I must admit that I was quite perplexed by this book. MPLS is not my strongest area of study - this book did not help my advancement of knowledge. This is not a book to read from cover-to-cover, but best read as the requirements arise. I think the author was particularly biased towards 'pro-Cisco'. I did not see any mention of the performance degradations that can accompany MPLS implementations. Also, I think the book needed a 2nd grammatical editor, as the overall 'flow' of the book was nonevident.

I give this book 3 pings out of 5:

The Author has nicely articulated the concepts. This book can be used by the beginners who is new to MPLS.Dont get misguided by the word Advanced.I used this book to learn the MPLS technology and also it helped me in passing the MPLS certification exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its an excellent reference for people designing MPLS Nets
It is the only book that I have found that has case studies on differenr MPLS applications like VPNs, Traffic Engineering, QOS.
It is very helpful for people needing a quick reference on MPLS . Besides the book explains the underlying concepts very clearly and in an easy to understand way. Thanks Mr. Alwayn for the excellent book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is
I think this product is good for what it is. That is to simply practice some advanced ip routing scenarios. It is another tool that you can use to help reinforce your understanding of certain concepts. Like all simulations, it has its limitations but Cisco has the right idea. The only way to seriously prepare for CCIE Lab exam is to practice with a rack of real Cisco equipment.

With this in mind, you can go through lots of complex scenarios and build on your knowledge and experience.

Finally, simulations are good to use when your are still building your lab or if you want to practice basic scenarios from scratch at the click of a button.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Network Simulator is lame.
These labs do not come close to reflecting the complexity of the CCIE one-day practical lab.I finished this entire CD (all 5 labs) in under an hour before breakfast. These exercises are not at an intermediate/advanced level as advertised.Very disappointed - an absolute waste of money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should be more to it for this price...
I was really surprised that Cisco considers this "Expert" material.I am no where close to ready for my CCIE exam but I ripped through all five labs in 2 hours. There are no difficult puzzles to solve here; It's all very straightforward configurations. It's not bad, it just needs more labs and more difficult scenerios.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's good practice
I dont know why some rate these CIMs so poorly. They are much better than routersim by far. Where else will you find training with narration and the number of routers you get. Although these CIMs are very structured in the commands available for individual the labs I feel what they are trying to do is teach you a specific topic without allowing you to stray away from the intended lesson so you better understand what is being taught. If you read any of the books and the use the CIMs you will have a greater understanding of what you read and some hands-on to back up the theory. Yes it's a little pricey but I find the much more enjoyable to learn from than dry read the page routersim.

3-0 out of 5 stars Something to do while you get your lab together.
I actually liked this little product, but it's clear they've had to defray the cost of developing the "simulation environment" by skimping on the lab exercises.I'd like to see them offer an upgrade for $50 with 10 more labs.

I must say that while the command set is limited strictly to what you need, the environment really does behave like a real router.I see it as a sanity check for people who think they're 20% ready for the CCIE lab (mileage may vary - I haven't taken the lab yet). ... Read more

    Product Description
Cisco Systems offers levels of certification that correspond directly to individuals' particular needs and where they are in their career development. CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert) is one of these certification programs; it is viewed as the highest level of networking expert certifications in the industry. In addition to the baseline internetworking knowledge covered in the recommended training courses, Cisco suggests that the key to success on the CCIE exam is several years of practical field experience combined with a structured self-study program.CCIE Fundamentals: Network Design and Case Studies, Second Edition provides a comprehensive collection of configuration scenarios and design recommendations tailored for CCIE preparation. Each chapter is a self-contained solution that presents insights into the implementation of practical networking strategies flexible enough to fit a variety of situations.Amazon.com Review
For a sophisticated view of networking design concepts thatgoes from lofty to granular in the blink of an eye, Network Designand Case Studies is a sure winner. This mammoth entry in Cisco'sgrowing collection of reference books provides equal parts academictheory and practical application.

The first half of the book dealsexclusively with design, starting with an explanation of the threetypes of networks (campus, wide area, and remote connections). Thebook outlines the design trends governing those networks todayand explains the devices used to create them and their functions, as wellas effective ways to integrate the three. The remaining chapters veeroff into more specific network types, such as Asynchronous TransferMode (ATM), Internet Protocol (IP), and Switched LAN, and theequipment and protocols best suited for those situations.

Thesecond half of this volume is dedicated to real-word problem solving. The 11 "case study" chapters focus on particularly sticky issues--suchas Routing Information Protocol (RIP) and Open Shortest Path First(OSPF) redistribution, reducing Service Advertising Protocol (SAP)traffic in Novell Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) networks, andUser Datagram Protocol (UDP) broadcast flooding--and proposeconfiguration solutions to fix them. As usual, this books holds therequisite flood of appendices; however, in this instance the "Referenceand Recommended Reading" entry is undoubtedly the mostuseful. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt ... 3-0 out of 5 stars not so good as most people's review
in fact, it just explains more deeperly than the ccnp routing book and don't get the step that expounds the routing protocols throughout.

with all other cisco books , they are only technologies guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - but not study material
This is definately not a book to use to study for your CCIE, but it contains an amazing amount of information on a wealth of different topics from Routing protocols(including BGP4), APPN, SNA, ATM, Multicast, etc. It will sit on my desk as a great reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Case studies - nothing more.
It's really just a case studies book. If you want to look at typical examples how people use Cisco equipment - it's a right choice. But if you want to dig deeper in some particular area, or if you want to learn networking background you should read something else.

I like this way to explain purpose of this book. Let's imagine you met a good Cisco guy and he let you stand behind him and watch how he does his job for a little bit. You can grab some tricks, get some vision of the process, but he is not trying to teach you. It's a good addition to the strong theoretical background but not a replacement.

Full of some very usefull case studies, this book has good approach towards network design. As a candidate for CCNP, I used this book to get some additional knowledge, from a practical point of view.

2-0 out of 5 stars NotCCIEstuff

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad product, bad ideas
Companies who hire CCIEs want someone who knows what they're doing, not someone who can just pass a test. First - I don't believe this book will make you any more likely to pass your CCIE lab. Second, if you need to cheat to get your CCIE, you won't last long in any job requiring a CCIE. Expectations are set very high for CCIEs in the workforce and you won't fool anyone for very long. Get some real experience, then take one of the legitimate bootcamps instead- they are worth it, and they won't ever recommend pirating or cheating.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be entitled "How to cheat to get your CCIE"
I can't believe that a CCIE book would actually condone braindumping (cheating) and theft of intellectual property (piracy). This book ought to be taken off the shelves.

Listen, if you want to be a CCIE, do it the right way: get several years of real-world IT experience administering Cisco devices, study legitimate training materials (not THIS book!), and get your CCIE. It's as simple as that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Darby Weaver's Review
    1. There is nothing in this book that is technical and I did not see a single "success story".

    2. The author openly recommends Pass4Sure - A known dump of the exact test as what it seems he believes is a legitimate self-help testing aid. Blind leading the blind.

    3. A complete waste of $15.95 > I read the preview first, so I was warned, but I really had to buy it so I could see for myself what it included.

    4. It is that bad.

    5. Mis-spellings are found even with my first quick glance - CCCIE being one and lad being another.Seriously - can anyone take this writing seriously.

    6. The author suggest using radidshare as a means of "sharing CCIE materials".Intellectual rights mean nothing to this author. This is clear.

Direct Quote "If you wanted to make sure you get the CCIE certificate in the bag, you should definately check out various CCIE braindumps accessible online. Apart from being effective, these braindumps are also more cost efficient as compared to old forms of review materials. Moreover, some CCIE braindump materials are also being combined with boot camps for better utilization. As a result, the person becomes ready in both the written and the lab part of the certification exams".

    7. Really???I've been to several CCIE Bootcamps from most of the major vendors and all of them make it known they do not and will not tolerate CCIE Braindumping of the NDA.Which ones is the author speaking of?

    8. Complete nonsense and utterly a waste of money.Since I hope I'm one of the first to buy this junk, let me warn the others.Don't bother. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good follow up to the CCDx series.
This book can essentially be divided into two parts:
    1) Why you should address your network Like So.
    2) Issues & Tips with individual routing protocols.

Part 1 is written a relatively clear and concise fashion, and makes a good follow up or addition to a CCDP course of study.Part 2 is slightly rich with errors, and a bit more grab-bag like in its approach to the subject matter.Weighing in at around 250 pages of core material, this book is one of the lighter reads in the CCIE study course, and could be tackled by a less experienced candidate as well.On the whole a good book, but not a great one, I still consider it recommendable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for Network Design and Troubleshooting....
This book deals with the scalability issues that plague big internetworks. For example, i couldnt find the discussion of implementing OSPF in a largescale ISP network EXCEPT this book. This book is not for the beginner. Andit wont teach you anything either (appendices are helpful to provide somebasic info about BGP, OSPF etc). If you are concerned with Network designand the scalability problems (and their solutions), I'd highly recommendthis book. OK. So how do u make the host routes "disappear" fromthe routing table in order to make sure that your dialup clients arentgenerating LSAs on to the backbone each time they connect and disconnect?? Also covered are redundancy issues in the Network Core Layer, BGP issuesetc. Good addition to your references.

There is nothing in this book that you couldn't learn from 6 months on thejob with a good networking group. I might have given it four stars if thereweren't so many errors, especially in the illustrations/figures. When indoubt as to the correctness of example, trust the text.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Challenging Enough
I passed the lab in March of 2003.I could only suggest the book to those just starting their studies. For those just about ready to go to the lab, let's say with 3 months to go before lab date, this won't be of much help.Practice labs need to be HARDER than the CCIE Lab.
If you are going to spend your time going for the CCIE, you MAY (I repeat MAY) want to start with this one, but review it to make sure they have changed the technologies! As of the last writing which I own, it's outdated.
Out of all of the time I spent on the CCIE preperation, I used this about 1% of my total study time.I guess that sums it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book well worth the money.
I just purchased this book, I found it very well written. The Labs and explanations are well organized and detailed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Riddled with mistakes!!!
PLEASE SAVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!

Yes, this book address the 2-day lab. But, I bought any way, figuring any lab work was beneficial. WRONG! I am half way through this book and I am finding it riddled with typos, mistakes, and poor editting. The labs are rather basic, if you can make it through the errors. Perhaps the authors should read Doyle's TCP/IP for a refresher on redistributing classful and classless routing protocols! I am forcing my way through, only because I hate to waste the money! DO NOT BUY!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Book is TOO EASY!
This book is for CCNP level. CCIEs will think the labs in this book are a joke. The solie book and ccbootcamp.com have much better labs than these.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cisco CCIE Lab Practice Kit
I found this book to be a good reference for the basics of the CCIE Lab.It provided a good foundation, however, it fell short of being a good preparation tool for the actual Lab.The book does not address the new 1-day format of the Lab Exam very well, and I felt that the book did not cover the internetworking technologies to the difficulty levels of the actual Lab exam.

I would recommend this book as a beginning to serious Lab Exam preparation, but you will soon find that you need to progress beyond the scope of this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE: just a few pages of incomplete material!
Yes, this has tons of questions and detailed answers, but it has ALMOST NO text material!5 chapters and each has about 4 pages of info before the questions, which is extremely spotty coverage. I'd suggest taking a LOOK at this book before you buy it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Can't some author do better than this ???
    28june02

I've read this book several times and scribbled corrections all over it.Same errors in questions are also on CD. CD user interface is nowhere near flexible enought (CCIEPrep much better for this).
Here's a few user interface gripes,
In Practice mode it doesn't tell you if you got a question wrong on a per-question basis=stupid.
Getting Assistance is awkward as you have to click "Assistance" then "Check" to see if you got the right answer & "Explanation" to get explanation.
There needs to be a Preferences setup to change programs' behaviour.
You must use a mouse as there are no keyboard shortcuts (like there normally are in any Windows program).
The Questions are in the same order & multiple choice per Q. is in same order every time s/w is run - not very realistic. CCIEPrep randomizes.
You can't click on the text of a question to register your answer, you must click on the Radio button/check-box.
You can't turn the clock off in Practice mode. This is a pain if you want to pause the test & start again later. The test automatically terminates when clock counts down to Zero.
You can't save a test & come back to it later.
Can't get one exam which is a mix of topics - Qs are always segregated into Network Fund., Routing Fund., Cisco Specific & Desktop & bridging.

Lots of the question 'Explainations' say "See test Reference to locate explanation." - this is rediculous - I didn't pay for software to tell me look in a book. CCIEPrep has all explanations in software.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't cover required material
First, this book has a good question and answer section. They actually explain each answer and why it works.Unfortunately, you'll have to learn the information from some other source because this book has nothing in it to help you learn any of the information.BGP is not even covered in the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Practice questions
This is the only book I have found that has CCIE level questions.
The book is well written and covers all of the technologies that you need to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
I found this book to be a good reference for the CCIE written exam. It has some awesome questions and great technology overviews. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Learning Tool
Of course, nothing better than real hands-on equipment on Cisco equipment. However, the best way to use it is not only to do the lab but also to study the other commands and check the Cisco Web site for configurations while doing this e-lab. The ATM portion of the lab. is what you should expect at the CCIE. ISDN is maybe a little different because of the different variations on the authentication methods used (for example, ppp chap hostname and ppp chap password, etc.)
I heard a lot of complains about these labs but I did think that Cisco was going in the right direction. ... Read more

CCIE Routing and Switching Flash Cards
Reviewer: Glenn Bradley, Senior Network Engineer
Reviewer Certification: CCDA, CCNA, CCNP, ISSP
    Rating: 4 out of 5

This text and flash card format is a great "last 30 days before the test" tool.If you've been preparing for your written or have plans to, remember this book.I chose a method that may work for some and not for others.

I took the four exam method to achieve my CCNP.I did this because it was more important to me to have an in depth understanding of the four primary disciplines than it was to get through the process quickly.I didn't want any gaps in my knowledge base as I prepared for the CCIE written.

I came straight off the CCNP completion and went into a 90 day high intensity self study program that basically occupied all my free time.I passed with (a little) room to spare but would have loved to have this book for my last 30 days of prep time.

Be sure to understand that this book is a study aid.It will in no way prepare you for the exam in and of itself. However, used in conjunction with a solid, well rounded study plan, it will increase your chances of success substantially.

The limited text preceding each chapter and the more in depth discussions of specific technologies that follow each chapter are well written and right to the point.I did not feel that I was reading a lot of fluff that some authors use to make it appear that there is greater value in the material being presented.

I give the book 4 out of 5.As mentioned earlier; the audience would include those just completing their CCNP and planning to go directly for the CCIE written in order to hang onto the more elusive details that we all learn just before an exam. Some folks may be planning to take the written directly as they are already functioning at the CCNP level. This text will help fill in the blanks they may have by not having the benefit of preparing for and taking the CCNP tests.

3-0 out of 5 stars A small start...
This book barely scratches the surface of the preparation required for the CCIE R&S written. The test has a considerable amount of minutia, some of which isn't even covered in the Cisco documentation. There are a number of topics on the test that not only aren't discussed in depth in this book, but actually aren't discussed at all. And of course it will in no way prepare you for the questions where you know the answer, but its not on the list (Cisco is notorious for that).

But its a start...and the test engine is an easy way to memorize the minutia that it does cover. Just don't expect that this book hints on all the topics that will be on the test.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but poor service
I purchased this book about a month ago and have found the material to be well suited to the purpose of reviewing the material in a condensed fashion. One bit of warning, however.I purchased this book mainly because of the advertised flashcard software for Pocket PC.Because I travel so much, I thought studying CCIE material would be a productive use of my down time.I was very chagrined to learn that the software doesn't install successfully on my Pocket PC.The CD touts support from Cisco Press and urges you to register with them but as far as I can see this is more for marketing purposes than as an opportunity to support the user.I even took the trouble of browsing the errata at the Cisco Press website and emailing the address they listed for book support but didn't receive a response from them. The material is good, but I have been sorely disappointed about not receiving what I was promised. For the price of this book, they really should deliver.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for CCIE Written prep
Let me first start by saying I was bummed to learn that my CCIE written had expired. Needless to say I had to retake the written. I picked up this exam pack in order to help me do quick refresher on topics that I had become dormant in. The Authors Anthony Sequeira and Kevin Wallace exam pack was just what I needed.

You are presented three ways of reviewing the material. These include 500+ flash cards, a pdf book and a test engine with 650 questions.

The flash cards were pretty good, and I normally hate them ( except when I was in 6th grade). The cards help as another way of reviewing the material in order to cement the knowledge you are reviewing. The flashcards are very in-depth cards that do help with your review

My favorite and I feel the best material you can use are the practice test. With over 650 questions it's like taking 6 CCIE Written exams before the real exam. I have always used practice questions to help prepare for the test I take. The questions are great for finding out if you really know the material. The questions are divided into topics so that you can test on them all or just the ones you select. This is perfect if you are good in one area but need more review in others.

The Quick reference pdf consist of short potent chapters geared for quick reference. These chapters get right to the heart of the topics. This is great if you are just needing the facts without all the fluff.

I passed my Written on first attempt using this exam. I have years of experience and a few test under my belt. So I can say that this is a very good for preparing the written. I would highly recommend it to anyone needing to review and prepare for Written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to prepare for CCIE Security Lab Exam
I would like to congratulate Dmitry and his team and cisco press for putting together this title. This book covers all the topics in good details with examples. It covers 12.2(15)T IOS features which are not easily found elsewhere. Amount of information and labs contained in this book will take anyone hundreds of hours to go through these labs and will certainly prepare them for THE CCIE lab. I am sure Concentrator and IDS chapters will be added in due time.

Full scale labs are very well laid out. If you are prepping for this test, you must go through these labs couple of times.

Great job Dmitry and crew! way to go!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible work by the authors!!!!
Incredible work by the authors. I like the way this book is laid out. The neat thing about it is the way it combines material which could be split into several books. My own CCIE study was not funded by an employer. I had to pay my own way (like most people), so having been able to save money on courses and books was a great benefit to me. The CCIE Security lab requires having a strong background in routing and switching and this book is a great bundle of information that reduces your search and study to the areas on which you are most likely to be tested. I don't have R&S CCIE, so seeing real examples of how routing & switching provides basis for security helped me pass the lab. I failed my first attempt because in my studies I assumed that it was going to be only security based, not realizing that I would be tested on the R&S background as well. I bought this book after I failed, and after completing all the practice labs in the book, I was able to get my CCIE after the second attempt. This book does not go into detail on IDS and VPN Concentrator, but I didn't have them on my test (maybe it was added afterwards).

I disagree with previous reviewer's comments. It seems like the author recommends taking 2 classes worth about $3200 each and buying several books which do not provide applicable lab scenarios instead of a $70-some investment into this book. Whatever topics are not listed in this book (and they can't, otherwise the book would need a forklift to pick it up) can be easily found on CCO for free. It's funny that the reviewer is admitting that somebody with a different background from theirs would give it 5 stars. Well, it seems that my background is different and I do give it 5 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should have covered the Security Topics only.....
I ordered this book in the hope that it would help me study for the CCIE Security Lab exam. I already have Soli's Practical Studies (both volumes). The beginning chapters in the book are related to Ethernet, ISDN, Routing Protocols etc. Don't expect the same level of detail for these topics here that you would find in Soli's book or in Jeff Doyle's book. Use those books to cover these topics. The security Practices (Part IV) of the book is why you bought this book.
Being an instructor for almost all cisco security courses, I was disappointed by the level of detail in Chapters 14 through 17. But then, the book might be covering just what you need for your exam. In my opinion, you need Saadat Malik's book Network Security Principles and Practices. I would give that book 5 stars!.
For me, the only chapters worth anything were Advanced VPNs (Chapter 20) and Chapter 26 (Sample Lab Scenarios -- which has eight scenarios).
The VPN Concentrator, which now appears on the lab is nowhere to be seen in this book. This is a big MINUS for this book.
Depending on your background with network security, you might want to give a better rating to this book as to the depth of the material covered. If you already have Doyle + Soli's books, get Sadat Malik's book + IOS Network Security documentation and attend the CSVPN course and CSIDS courses (if you can). This book does not cover the IDS Sensor at all. It only covers the limited IDS of the PIX and routers.
I would have liked it better if the routing/switching topics would have been left off totally from this book and the focus would have been entirely on the Security stuff (read VPN Concentrator and the IDS Sensor etc). People would tell you that you can get them off the Documentation CD. Well, if so, the stuff that the book has is also on the doc. cd :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars The only real guide for your once in a lifetime lab
Having passed your CCIE Security Qualification Exam, you'll need to spend some time preparing for the lab - no easy task, and with so little information around, you'll need all the help you can get.

I bought this book on its release in July and have just passed the CCIE Security lab in Brussels. The lab was very difficult - and not to be underestimated. This book is close to the real thing and was an invaluable guide, and (with LOTS of practice) helped me to my goal. Above all, it helped me realise how under prepaired I would have been. I'm pretty sure that without this book, I would have failed the lab.

The book has twenty-five chapters of background, followed by eight "Labs" for you to try for yourself. If you can master those in the time given, you'll be in a good position to tackle the real thing. There's the odd typo here and there, but is generally sound and well written, but should of course be suplimented by other material aswell.

    Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars BETTERTITLE >>> BETA -1 - CCIE Practical Studies: Security
I have read and applied this book from start to finish in a home lab that included all cisco and non-cisco network equipment outlined in this book ( the exception is ATM).

While this book is a helpful resource for preparation for the CCIE Security Lab ( Basically there is no other similiar book out there for the same price --- closest is currently closer to $450 <--- but you get what you pay for)--- IT SHOULD NOT BE A RELEASE VERSION!!! THIS BOOK IS RIDDLED WITH EDITORIAL MISTAKES, TYPOS, MISPRINTS, and ERRORS. The occasional error in a book would have been pardoned, but simple stated this book contains errrors from Chapter 5 frame-relay to chapter 26 sample lab scenarios. Many (not just some) of the configuration examples contain erroneous information that do not correctly tie in to the subject specifics being outlined in the chapter subject matter. Some of the configurations on the CD that are meant to let you know if you applied all practice lab steps correctly are clearly missing supporting configurations.

I go through a ton of technical books. Other reviewers of this book that state that they have not been able to read a Cisco book that led them through many practical expamples are basically not even looking for the info. ( HEY CLEAR LAB CONFIGURATION EXAMPLES ARE AVAILABLE ALL OVER CISCO'S SITE FOR FREE --- NOT TO MENTION I HAVE A LIBRARY OF BOOKS THAT CONTAIN ERROR FREE PRACTICAL EXAMPLES)

I usually won't write a review be it good or bad, but I simply could not just let this one go without letting others interested in this book knowing what they are considering purchasing. I expected that if someone published a book on Cisco CCIE security practice labs, that all labs presented in such a book would have been fully functional and tested so that configurations can be fully sanitized. The content of this book leads to the conclusion that either the labs were never fully completed and sanitized, or the editor of this book is so poorly organized that they should be out of a job. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars What?
Never before has a Cisco book covered so many protocols so poorly in so little space.I actually felt more confused about IS-IS after reading this book than I did before I started. The coverage of other protocols is little better. The author's frequent grammatical slip-ups render many sentances open to contracdictory interpretations. On the whole, I would recommend the CCIE Routing TCP/IP Volumes I and II before this book. There are some good chapters here and there in the book, and some good information you won't find elsewhere, but the middle chunk of the text is a waste. So much of this book is a bad rehash of what the CCNP or CCIE candidate will have already studied elsewhere as to make the reading experience as a whole discouraging.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Edited
Editing seems to have been limited to running the text through a spell checker. Page 69 refers to "a Frame Rely network". Page 72 explains that an ISDN BRI provides "two barrier channels".

Frequently diagrams include acronyms for which no explanation is offered, as if the figure was shoveled in from somewhere else. There is no glossary of acronyms and many are missing from the index.

An entire chapter is spent on RIP1, with redundant statements about the lack of VLSM support and obsolete status.

My experience was that issues of technical sublety were as often muddied as they were explained.

There is good info in this book, too, but considering the Cisco name, I expected much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but supplement your reading with the relevant RFCs
I used this book to understand Cisco's BGP4 implementation. And I thank my lucky stars that I'd read RFC 1771 first!

Overall, this book does a good job of explaining the various knobs that Cisco supports for the protocols discussed. However, in attempting to also cover the bits and bytes of these protocols, the book makes far too many mistakes.

For instance, on page 269, when discussing BGP's UPDATE message, the book says that the Withdrawn Routes field consists of, "... triples, with length being one octet, and indicates the number of octets in the prefix field." First of all, the so-called "" construct is not a "triple"! Second, the length element does not indicate the "number of octets" in the prefix field, rather, it indicates the number of significant bits!

On the other hand, this book does a much better job of explaining various protocol features at a high level. In particular, its discussion of BGP4 path attributes is very good. Much better than RFC 1771 in fact!

In summary, get your bits and bytes from the RFCs and use this book to understand when to tweak the Cisco's knobs for its various protocol implementations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's a good one.
This book is about 560 pages long, and aproximately first 300 pages describe briefly Internet evolution and basics of IP protocols. It's a pretty interesting stuff, the content is good and style is o.k. too, but you can read it anywhere and I'd say there is nothing special there. The real value of this book in the last 260 pages. There are a few case studies, and it's something really unique. I was very surprised that I've never thought about some issues specific to very large networks. Hub and spoke network design for 800 routers is pretty much different from the 80 routers network. I think there are very few people in the world who are working on so high level and it's very interesting just to take a look at the problem examples they meet in their work.

Probably, this book won't help much in your everyday work, and probaly you'd expect more large network specific information. Of course, I wouldn't recommend you to read this book in the very beginning of your networking career. But if you 've got a strong networking backgroung and you're looking for more advanced design tutorials, this book, especially last 200 pages, would be very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book from one of the top network designers
Khalid is one of the best network designers I have ever met. His book isexcellent technically, and is both clear and concise. This is not a bookfor the faint hearted - a good knowledge of routing protocols and networkdesign is a must. For those who are experienced network engineers, tryingto "go to the next level", this is a MUST HAVE. ... Read more

There has never been a CCIE Guide like this.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced, you need to know the basics of CCIE. This book can teach you everything fundamental you need to know. It has both theory and practical guidance. The authors don't tell you what to do in a given situation -- they teach you how to determine what information to use to achieve the effect YOU want.

Success Secrets is not about the ins and outs of CCIE. Instead, it answers the topquestions that we are asked and those we come across in forums, our consultancy and education programs.

It tells you exactly how to deal with those questions, with tips that have never before been offered in print.

This book is also not about CCIE best practice and standards details. Instead, it introduces everything you want to know to be successful with CCIE.

The CCIE All-in-One Study Guide actually would be a fairly decent book were its title not quite so overwhelming in its promises--because, frankly, it's not an all-in-one book. Any book that says it'll steer you through the notoriously tough waters of the CCIE exam, then doesn't provide a lick of information on routing commands, obviously is being a bit hopeful. A more appropriate title might have been "The Absolutely In-Depthest Book on Networking Protocols You Could Ever Want"; not only would that not have fit on the cover, probably, but it really wouldn't have sold, either.

What this book is, however, is a step-by-step but fairly intense walk through the minutest portions of networking. Most books will tell you that "Ethernet works by broadcasting frames across a cable---every computer checks the frame to see if it's theirs, and if it is they pick it up"; the CCIE AIO not only goes through the exact byte sequence with which Ethernet broadcasts onto the cable, but it gives flow charts that tell you, in excruciating detail, how it checks the write, how the computer knows when a frame is ended, whether it's theirs, and how it checks to see if it's too small. A wealth of detail will flood you, the reader.

Which is a problem with the guide: it strives to be comprehensive, and it is. If you're the sort of person who learns best by thoroughly immersing yourself in the underpinnings of a system, this is your dream--the chapter on TCP/IP architecture in particular is extremely thorough and worthwhile. In terms of actually getting as close to a bit-level understanding of how a computer processes the various protocols and routing commands, this book probably is unparalleled.

People have said that the Guide is poorly written--actually, the writing is a strong point, with clear sentences walking you with ease through some fairly niggling topics. What it lacks is organization; even within the chapter, it sometimes leaps spontaneously from topic to topic, requiring a bit of crisscrossing on your part. One wishes for a strictly chronological tour from start to finish on how the computer thinks, but it's not always there. There isn't that much on troubleshooting, either, but the book seems to assume that once you understand how everything works it will follow naturally that you know how it can break down... which is not unreasonable, truthfully.

The questions are plentiful--over a thousand of them--but tend to err on the simple side for the CCIE, with an emphasis on definitions, setting parameters, and True/False questions, instead of troubleshooting problems (although they do exist). Unfortunately, the answers section is almost completely useless--if you chose the wrong answer, there is generally not any form of explanation of why something is right. You just get a blunt "B and C are the correct answers," without much else. (To be fair, however, there are some well-explained answers--about one out of every seven or so--but they're the exception, not the norm.)

Essentially, this is not so much a total study guide as it is a very detailed look at a topic that CCIE candidates should know inside and out. In that sense, this is an invaluable guide marred by a few technical flaws and some poor organization. More importantly, the title's a bit hyperbolic, which causes some letdown. However, if you understand that this book will get you a long way towards getting the certification without quite being the all-in-one stop it promises, you'll have gotten your money's worth. --William Steinmetz ... 1-0 out of 5 stars terrible service. Never received the book and no response from the seller. Money lost.
I never received the book I ordered. When I wrote to the seller, he gave me an arbitrary tracking number that was invalid. I brought it tohis notice, but no response or apology or money return by him. Did not expect such sellers to have good star rating at amazon. This is clearly a rob off.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too bad
This book contains too many errors and misleading statements.
    Just check page 376.
The excises following each chapter might be good for kids only.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why dig a 10,000 foot hole when you only need 10 feet?
I kept hoping the author would stay focused on CCIE written materials, but time and time again, I found myself joining him on a journey into the technical details of the technical details.

The fact is, if you want to pass the written, you have to study specifically for it.Why else would you be spending hours and hours reading about RIF's?There are much better topics to focus on.This book doesn't keep that in mind.It sways into territory that you just don't want to explore.

I passed the Written Exam today.I can say it was hardly due to this book.I suggest the CCIE book by Swartz.

I want to leave it on a good note. The text is very detailed and I will always keep it as a reference. It's obvious a lot of work was put into this book, it should just be renamed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Details, Details, Details
I love details, and they really drill down in this book.It will make great future reference. But, my goal is to pass the CCIE written right now.So I would have appreciated a focus on the written exam. There are details in here that, while very useful, are not going to assist in passing the exam. The book tries to do to much and doesn't live up to its title.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you don't have money to waste - don't waste it on Giles!
If you don't have money to waste, don't waste it on this book. If any tech book you are considering is written by Roosevelt Giles - avoid it like the plague. I'm an ex-Cisco SE. CCIE exam material is like swallowing hard liquor - if you are able to digest it well, it should feel good. Books written (more like cut and pasted from Giles MCSE and CNE stuff) the way this one is - kinda like hitting yourself on the head with the liquor bottle. Want your head to hurt from the WORST technical writing ever? Try Giles. McGraw-Hill's good reputation in network technology books has been SEVERELY damaged. ... Read more
