Extractions: Dial up a bank or airline these days, and chances are your call will be answered by a prerecorded voice rather than a live human being. By stringing together several canned phrases, such systems do an adequate job of bringing a banking or ticket-booking transaction to a successful conclusion. Though the cobbled-together speech sounds stilted, these systems are sufficient for handling limited transactions, where the subject matter is known in advance. But since they can't stray from their prerecorded phrases, their capabilities are limited. Once we've assembled the best-fit phonemes in a row, all that remains is smoothing. Though we've had many samples to select from and we've chosen them carefully, small discontinuities will remain at each splice. When adjacent samples deviate slightly in pitch, the sentence ends up with a jumpy, warbling sound. We fix this by forcing small pitch adjustments to correct it, like a carpenter sanding a series of glued joints to create a smooth, pleasing surface. We literally bend the pitch of each phoneme to match that of its neighbors. The result is polished-sounding conversational speech.

Product Information What Is Speech Technology? In the mid- to late 1990s, personal computers started to become powerful enough to make it possible for people to speak to them and for the computers to speak back. Today, the technology is still a long way from delivering natural, unstructured conversations with computers that sound like humans, as envisioned for the future by 2001 A Space Odyssey and Star Trek
Extractions: SAPI 5.1 Brings Speech Technology within Easy Reach of Millions of Developers for First Time REDMOND, Wash., Aug. 21, 2001 Millions of PC users may not know it, but they can ignore the keyboard and mouse when they want to create and format e-mails and Microsoft Word documents, open and close files in Excel, or create PowerPoint presentations. And they can also ignore their display screens and have the numbers and text read back to them as they enter data into an Excel spreadsheet. Thats because the software theyre using Microsoft Office XP understands voice commands and can convey information by speaking. Office XPs ability to understand and use spoken language is based on a Microsoft technology called the Speech Application Programming Interface (SAPI) thats also being used by a growing array of independent software developers to speech-enable their own applications. Microsoft this week released SAPI version 5.1, which vastly simplifies application developers work to enable their applications to speak and to understand the speech directed to them. SAPI 5.1 also makes it easier for "engine vendors" the people who create the underlying software code that translates between spoken words and text to offer software engines that can work with many speech-enabled applications, without having to re-write the engine code to support each one. Similarly, application vendors gain the flexibility to link their software to any compatible engine.

Current speech technology applications development often involves both speech engineering specialists and researchers from traditionally more humanities-oriented backgrounds like phonetics and linguistics. The Department of Linguistics and Language Technology at the University of Joensuu wishes to invite researchers from or interested in the area of speech technology to a weekend of talks and discussions about the interaction of speech technology and linguistics. Our central question will be twofold: At a time when several nationally funded interdisciplinary research projects in Finland approach their completion and a national language technology teaching network has been established, a debate of these questions seems all the more justified and interesting. To inspire discussions, the following keynote speakers have been invited:
