Extractions: LIGHT WITH LINUX by Nancy Cohen A two-year old travel planning operation inherits a massive household brand name wants to do business in Web-enabled travel services without shelling out the cash for infrastructure up front. Is that the right direction? The CIO says its the only path that makes perfect sense as an initiative in startup mode. The ExxonMobil Travel Guide LLC, Corp., which publishes the Travel Guide, intends to build and operate a Mobil Companion Web site (Mobil Travel Companion Service) where, for a fee, customers plan road trips online, make use of travel services, and get preferred hotel, restaurant and other travel-related rates. The idea is that, through virtual servers administered by IBM, the Mobil Travel Guides computing power and storage will come to them over the Internet from an IBM network of data centers. Paul Mercurio, CIO at ExxonMobil Travel Guide LLC, notes that the business advantage is getting the right technology to launch what promises to be a growth business, but without the company having to put a lot of money into computing infrastructure to do so. In 1958, the Mobil Travel Guide came into being to give advice to drivers as they travel around the States. Says Ralph Gianolla, the companys senior vice president, This was a time when hotels were not part of powerful groups but were independent. As a trusted travel resource with a big database of lodgings, restaurants and attractions and a rating system, The Mobil Travel Guide became something like a Good Housekeeping seal of approval in travel, with a star rating system guiding travelers toward quality experiences in travel and hospitality. Then ExxonMobil Travel Guide LLC was launched, with backing from Exxon Mobil Corp. and others.

Biblio Informatique Mobil Size and weight constraints limit the computing resources on a mobile client.Network connectivity is highly variable, and sometimes nonexistent. http://www.infres.enst.fr/~demeure/bib-mobiles.html
Extractions: Mobility places many demands on a system. Size and weight constraints limit the computing resources on a mobile client. Network connectivity is highly variable, and sometimes non-existent. Battery life is a nagging concern. In spite of these challenges, mobile users need to access and update information at any time and from any place. Coda and Odyssey are experimental systems built by the research group of Professor M. Satyanarayanan in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University to explore these issues. Both systems embody adaptation at many levels. Coda implements application-transparent adaptation in the context of a distributed file system.
Extractions: When Mobil Travel Guide issued a request for proposal for hosted computing services to support a forthcoming, paid Internet travel service, it didn't have strong preconceived notions about platforms or vendors it wanted to use. Among the half-dozen bids it received, two came from services and systems giant IBM. One of the bids called for the use of traditional, hosted Unix servers and support, while the second specified use of Linux servers on a "virtual" basis. Under the second scenario, IBM and Mobil Travel Guide would conduct capacity planning and allot the required amount of computing capacity. More On Mobil Travel Guide Mobil Travel Guide ended up selecting the Linux service based on a number of factors: the backing of IBM, the ability to map computing capacity to demand, the low cost of Linux and the fact that the nascent service had an opportunity to effectively "start clean" from an infrastructure standpoint with technology that's moving more and more into the mainstream. The new service to be launched in early 2003 builds on Mobil Travel Guide's long-standing print publication with a database of hotel and restaurant ratings. "Our business has quite a bit of seasonality, in the summer, during the Christmas driving peak and at other times," said Paul Mercurio, Mobil Travel Guide CIO. The ability of IBM's Linux virtual service, therefore, to map capacity to variable demand, was an important consideration in its selection.

LAN Times Mobil Expedition - Mission Statement Mobile computing at 20,000 Feet. Provo, Utah Mt. McKinley in Alaska. At 20,320 feet, mobile computing takes on new challenges. Dennis http://www.climbing-guides.com/mckinley/mission.html
Extractions: Provo, Utah, May 24, 1996 During the month of June 1996, Dennis Williams, Senior Editor and Lab Manager for LAN Times magazine, will be taking mobile computing to new heights. He is embarking on an expedition to the highest point on the North American continent, Mt. McKinley in Alaska. At 20,320 feet, mobile computing takes on new challenges. Limited cell phone coverage is available on Mt. McKinley above 14,000 feet. The only other option for communication is a satellite phone, the smallest of which still weigh over 20 pounds and are too bulky for a single climber to carry in addition to climbing gear and food. "I studied all possible wireless communication alternatives," says Williams, "and the only possibility was cellular." Two-way pagers, RAM, Ardis, and RadioMail all have limited coverage and capacity. The remoteness of Mt. McKinley makes mobile computing a real challenge. Unlike other expeditions (hot-link to the Links page) up Mt. Everest where climbers hire porters to haul all their equipment to the top, Williams will be doing all the work himself. In short, what he takes has to go on his back. The large expeditions have a "communications center tent" at base camp with radios and a satellite phone. Climbers carry small, handheld radios up the mountain to communicate with base camp, where their progress and comments are then relayed via satellite phone to the Internet. "It's different when you're a one-man communications shop." Hopefully it won't be too cold on the summit to prevent Williams from removing his heavy mittens and sending an email from 20,320 feet.

Extractions: Mobil Travel Guide has inked a five-year deal with IBM for utility computing, or computing power on demand, over the Internet. IBM said the contract for Linux-based utility computing services is the first of its kind in the travel and transportation industry. IBM will provide on-demand access to Linux-based server processing, storage, and networking capacity from IBM e-business hosting centers in the United States. Mobil will tap into IBM zSeries mainframes running Linux, and pay only for the computing power and capacity that gets used. The utility model will support a new Web-based service Mobil Companion offering customized service for auto travelers. The program includes Web-based travel planning, travel support services, and preferred rates at hotels, restaurants, and other travel service providers. The Mobil service will launch later this year.
