It's also a great good that you can change your filetype icons and even create your own filetypes, but it would be even nicer to also have the ability to change the icon for an individual file . You can't do this directly but there is a way to simulate it if you really must have this effect. Below is an explaination of this. In the screen shot below (left) I have a "Sika" folder opened. It has four subfolders (with custom icons) in it, but let's say that I don't really require subfolders, and would rather have four text files instead. Since I've designated all text files on my computer (plain ASCII files that also have a ".txt" extention) to look like purple triangles, the opened Sika folder would look like the picture on the right. I could still "dress up" this folder by creating shortcuts for the files, changing the icons for the shortcuts and then making the original (target) files seem to dissappear by giving then a "hidden" attribute leaving only the customized shortcuts visable. It's done like this: First, to make things orderly, let's have all hidden files shown. If you're not sure what your current setting for this is, go to the View Menu of any folder and click "Folder Options." (In Win2000 the Folder Options is in the Favorites Menu.) Click the "View" tab. Scroll down to the choices for "Hidden Files." Put a check mark in "Show all files," apply it and close the requester.
