Buy an earlier edition
If you are looking for an informative photography book don't buy this one, buy the 2001 edition (Peoples of the World) which is cheaper, or look for something else.Although it contains some beautiful photos, nearly all of them are taken from a previous edition.They didn't update their information or stats, they just shrunk it down size wise, removed lots of photographs, added a couple new ones and gave it a new layout.I was also disappointed to find that while Australians, Brazilians, New Zealanders, Afrikaners, French etc. have a unique culture worth discussing just as do Fuegians and Evenk etc., Americans and Canadians do not.I expected a lot more from National Geographic one of those things being at least one picture of each of the cultures they list. It seems I have been spoiled by their magazine!

Great Informative Book
I never expect anything less from Nat Geo. Beautiful pictures, informative text. GREAT GREAT book on people of the world.

Nice book, not updated with the latest results of DNA research
This is a really nice coffee table book. It is a very good document of cultural diversity, but this book update failed to incorporate latest research of their own National Genographic project Genographics. The project results are available for couple years already - book "The Journey of Men" was published in 2004.
Therefore, references to tribal or ethnic origins are in some places of the book simply wrong. An example is the origin of western Balkan ethnic groups.
The book is very colorful with excellent photos. It is probably too much to expect it to be a scientific reference, too.

Good photographic reference book
The pictures well illustrate the many cultures being reported on. There's a real mix of factual data (population statistics and the like) and qualitative descriptions to give one a feel for the peoples being detailed. The former is probably easier to access via the web, but this book is excellent for the latter. You can read it and get glimpses into the lives of the Bushmen, of tribal life in the Amazon, of the Roma, and of ourselves. My twin ten year old daughters love the book. They'll open randomly and learn about peoples and cultures they likely have never previously heard of.

wonderful cultures
This book I have only looked at and read once, and some of the facts are interesting which include that now in the world that quite a number of Albanians are converting Roman Catholicism and leaving Athiesm, and that now their are a growing number of Albanians rising not only in Albania(95%), but in parts of northwestern Macedonia(25.2%),Kosovo(92%), Greece, and Italy. ...
