    Extractions: Mozart and Weber were first cousins by marriage, but Mozart died when Weber was only five. His father, music director of a touring company, clung to this family attachment in the hope that one of his own sons would be equally famous. The third son, Carl Maria, accompanied his father everywhere, learning the mechanics and ways of the musical theatre at first hand. Eventually he would become a highly talented all-rounder: a remarkable pianist, composer, administrator and conductor. Weber's desultory education began when he was ten. Michael Haydn taught him counterpoint when he was 11, then he resumed his journeys with the troupe. Weber had occasional lessons in singing and composition between 1798 and1800. By this time, he had already published some piano pieces and had composed an opera. The age of Italian opera's domination of German theatres was coming to an end and, in 1813, Weber was appointed music director of the German Opera in Prague. He remained there for three years, gaining their full confidence and co-operation, and putting on Beethoven's 'Fidelio' and some new works. Weber's esteem increased throughout Europe and, in 1816, he again toured as a piano recitalist and met all the great musicians of the day. The King of Saxony then called him to Dresden to be his Kapellmeister. This was not as straightforward as it appeared because Francesco Morlacchi was already in residence as Italian Kapellmeister. Only two years older than Weber, he was already strongly entrenched, and very protective of his status. However, Morlacchi did not succeed in his intrigues against his German colleague.

    Extractions: In love with Agathe (soprano), daughter of the head ranger, Max (tenor) enters a shooting competition the winning of which will confirm his eligibility to marry her. He accepts the help of Caspar (bass) who has sold his soul to the evil spirit Samiel (speaking role), and accompanies Caspar to the dreaded Wolf's Glen where, with Samiel's aid, seven magic bullets are forged. Unknown to Max, the last bullet will go where it is directed by Samiel. Although Max wins the contest, he seventh bullet, which he aims at a dove, wounds Agathe. A hermit (bass) intercedes, Agathe recovers, and Caspar dies. Max confesses and is given a year in which to atone.

Son of town musician and theatrical impresario and his 2nd wife, a singer and actress. Taught as boy by Michael Haydn in Salzburg, then by court organist, Kalcher, in Munich 1798-1800. By 1800 had already composed opera, mass, and pf. works. Went to Vienna in 1803 as pupil of Vogler, through whose influence became Kapellmeister at Breslau municipal th. 1804-6. Worked in Karlsruhe 1806-7, where he wrote 2 syms. Court secretarial post Stuttgart 1807-10, where he was encouraged by Kapellmeister, Danzi. While there wrote incidental mus. to Turandot , opera Silvana , and other works. Banished from Stuttgart because of false suspicion of embezzlement, went to Mannheim, where he was befriended by Gottfried Weber (no relation), then to Darmstadt, where he met Vogler again and took lessons from him in company with Meyerbeer. At this time wrote comic opera
