Extractions: Sentinel staff writer Lou Harrison, one of the most celebrated and influential figures in the history of 20th-century classical music and a longtime resident of Aptos, died Sunday of a heart attack near Lafayette, Ind. He was 85. Harrison was en route by car from Chicago to Columbus, Ohio, where he was to be honored at the Contemporary Music Festival 2003 at Ohio State University, when he collapsed and died at a Lafayette restaurant. The four-day OSU festival, which was to take place Feb. 6-9, was dedicated entirely to Harrison and his music, a telling indication of his stature in the world of contemporary classical music.

Lou Harrison List of "must-have" recordings Period: Modern (1870-) Lou Harrison was one of the most inventive and individual of American composers. His music is noted for its pervasive integration of Native American and Asian musical influences and its emphasis on melody and rhythm, often avoiding harmony altogether. His family moved from Oregon when he was nine, and continued to move frequently around the San Francisco Bay area. The very diverse musical atmosphere of San Francisco was the primary formative force in his life. He could hear Cantonese opera; Gregorian chant; Spanish, Mexican, and Native-American music; and jazz and classical music. The San Francisco Public Library, with its strong music department, enabled him to take armloads of music home to study. He studied jazz piano, Gregorian chant, and conducting while in high school. He took Henry Cowell's course on "Music of the People of the World," further studying counterpoint and composition with Cowell.

During his long and varied career, he has explored dance, Asian music, tuning systems, and universal languages, and has actively championed political causes ranging from pacifism to gay rights. As an articulate and outspoken observer of the contemporary musical scene, he is frequently quoted in the media; yet until now no comprehensive study of his life and works has been published. The present book, supported by extensive archival research and nearly 70 interviews, examines the ideas that have shaped Harrison's creative output, as seen through the eyes of the composer and his associates. A detailed biographical section is followed by individual chapters focusing on Music and Dance, Intonation and Tuning, Instruments, Asian influences, Gamelan, Music and Politics, Music Criticism, and Compositional Processes. In 1946, Harrison conducted the premiere of Ives' Third Symphony which he had edited from the manuscript score. The following year, Ives was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for this work which he shared with Harrison. Despite the successes and productivity, Lou found the noise and stress of New York depleting and unhealthy. He sought respite in a more rural environment through a faculty position at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. There, he completed several earlier compositions and wrote a host of new ones, among them his chamber opera Rapunzel Harrison moved back to California in 1953, settling in the (then) rural village of Aptos where he has lived ever since. His return to the west coast marked a renewal of his ties to Asia. During trips to Japan, Korea and Taiwan in 1961-62, he studied native instruments including the
