    Extractions: Gluck, Christoph Willibald von 1714-87, German-born operatic composer. Gluck revolutionized opera by establishing lyrical tragedy as a unified vital art form. He studied music at Prague and later in Italy with G. B. Sammartini. His first 10 operas, in the Italian style, were successfully performed in Italy in the years 1741-45. In 1752, after sojourns in England and Germany, Gluck became conductor of Prince Hildburghausen's private orchestra in Vienna, and for the next decade he directed musical productions at the Viennese court. With his opera Orfeo ed Euridice (1762), inspired by Greek legend, Gluck introduced an entirely new kind of opera, in which dramatic, emotional, and musical elements were artistically fused for the first time. To Ranieri Calzabigi, the librettist of Orfeo and also Alceste (1767), Gluck gave much of the credit for his new operatic style. In 1773, Gluck went to Paris, where his first serious opera with a French libretto, (1774), was performed. That and subsequent productions created much controversy between supporters of Gluck and proponents of traditional Italian opera. His last important work

    Extractions: Lier = muziekinstrument uit de Griekse oudheid. Bestaat uit schild van schildpad, zijarmen en snaren. Klaroen = soort trompet met zeer heldere doordringende tonen. Klaroen wordt door Bach gebruikt in zijn "Hohe Messe". Wordt daarom ook wel Bachtrompet of sopraantrompet genoemd. Klaroen of clarino lijkt op een oude posthoorn. Samen met een groep vrienden rouwt Orfeus om de dood van zijn geliefde Eurydice. Al gauw vraagt hij zijn vrienden zich terug te trekken, waarna hij alleen zijn klaagzang voortzet. Hij vervloekt de wrede goden van de onderwereld, die hem zijn jonge bruid ontnomen hebben. Amor verschijnt en vertelt dat de goden zo met Orfeus' lot begaan zijn dat zij hem toestemming verlenen in het dodenrijk af te dalen om Eurydice te halen. Voorwaarde is echter dat hij haar niet aankijkt zolang zij beiden niet in de bovenwereld zijn teruggekeerd en ook mag hij haar niet vertellen over dit gebod. Orfeus is zich ten volle bewust van deze moeilijke opdracht. Eurydice zal hem blindelings moeten gehoorzamen. Het zal zeer zwaar zijn voor hen beiden, maar hij is vastbesloten deze beproeving te ondergaan.

Al inicio de su carrera continúa la tradición italiana, Gluck pasaría a la historia por sus aportaciones a la ópera barroca. Fue nombrado director del teatro de la Corte de Viena. En sus trabajos concede especial importancia a la declamación y los coros, además de trasmitir al espectador el estado psicológico de sus personajes. La recreación de los sentimientos y las emociones fueron el principal objetivo de sus creaciones . Tras sufrir una apoplejía y quedarse paralítico de un brazo recibió la ayuda de Salieri , su alumno, que escribía las óperas de su maestro. Compuso 107 obras enmarcadas en el movimiento romántico. De ellas destacan: "Orfeo y Eurídice", "Alceste" (1767), "Ifigenia en Áulide", "La fiesta de Apolo" y "Paris y Helena", entre otras.
