    Extractions: Artaserse, was produced at Milan in 1741; its success brought commissions, and during the next four years Gluck composed seven more operas, for Milan, Venice, Crema, and Turin. In 1745 he went to London and composed two Italian operas for the King's Theatre at the Haymarket. Thereafter he traveled to Dresden and Bohemia and possibly also to Hamburg; by 1748 he was in Vienna, where he had been commissioned to set Metastasio's Semiramide riconosciuta for the opening of the newly reconstructed Burgtheater. In 1750 Gluck married Maria Anna Bergin, daughter of a merchant with close ties to the imperial court. From 1752 until the 1770s he lived mostly in Vienna, where his first employment was as Konzertmeister in the court of the imperial field marshal Prince Joseph Friedrich Wilhelm of Saxe-Hildburghausen; there he came into contact with Kapellmeister of his own for the Burgtheater, including La fausse esclave (1758). When Italian opera made a comeback on the Viennese stage around 1760 (partly the result of the marriage of the heir apparent, Joseph, to Isabella of Parma), Durazzo introduced Gluck to librettist Raniero Calzabigi, and in 1761 the two collaborated on their first big success

Seit 1752 ist Gluck als Opernkomponist von europäischem Ruf kaiserlicher Hofkompositeur in Wien. Hier entstehen Glucks französische komische Opern, in denen er sich die Mittelknapper musikalischer Charakteristik erwirbt.

    Extractions: Site First employed in the house of Prince Lobkowitz in Vienna, Gluck accompanied the court to Milan where he studied with Sammartini. A growing reputation as a composer of opera earned Gluck an invitation (1745) to London writing for the Haymarket Theatre. When Handel cynically advised Gluck that his works had not pleased the public, he traveled to Paris where he was very much influenced by the operas of Rameau . From 1755-61 Gluck was in Vienna where he began his important work of reforming opera seria along the more dramatic lines suggested in Marcello's Teatro alla moda (1720). Gluck's contribution to opera is in the development of an international style combining the best traits of Italian, French, and German schools.

    Extractions: 1741 wurde seine erste Oper 'Artaxerxes' aufgeführt und es folgten 5 weitere Opern für Mailand, Venedig und Turin. 1745 ging er nach London wo er Händel begegnete. Dann ging Gluck mit einer Operntruppe auf Tournee durch ganz Europa, wo er seine eigene und die Musik anderer Komponisten aufführte. 1750 ließ er sich in Wien nieder, wo er bis 1764 Kapellmeister an der Hofoper war. Glucks Opernreform ging dahin, die Selbstherrlichkeit den Sängern zu nehmen. An Stelle des Bravourgesanges, den 3teiligen Arien und Rezitativen, die die dramatische Handlung erstarren ließen und ohne wirklichen Bezug zur Handlung waren, traten Arien, die durch wiederkehrende Begleitmotive die Teile des Werkes zu einer Einheit führten. Sein Einfluß auf die Geschichte des Musiktheaters ist von enormen Bedeutung. Vor allem H. Berlioz und R. Wagner griffen die Gedanken von Gluck auf.

(In diesen "Wanderjahren" wurde auch im Schloß Pillnitz bei Dresden das Festspiel "Le nozze d'Ercole e d'Ebe" gegeben.) Ob Gluck nun später in Italien oder in Wien lebte, immer schuf er fürs Theater. In einer Fülle von Werken der Seria und Comique drang er, alle Möglichkeiten erschöpfend, bis an die Grenzen der theatralischen Gebiete vor und - sprengte diese Grenzen. Piccinnisten , der freien bürgerlichen Kunst gegen die alte, höfisch gebundene, hervor - wieder einmal ging es um die Ein-und Umschmelzung des italienischen Stils in die deutsche Musik, die sich in der Oper (eine der Merkwürdigkeiten dieser Kunstgattung mehr) über das französische Medium vollzog. Daß dies reine, stets ein wenig vornehm kühle musikalische Drama der Humanität, das der reife Meister so bewußt mit seinem ausdrucksvollen deklamatorischen Gesang, seinen vom Geist des Erhabenen erfüllten Chören und Tänzen anstrebte, vordringlicher theoretischer Überlegungen und Entscheidungen bedurfte, ist einleuchtend. To Ranieri Calzabigi, the librettist of Orfeo and also Alceste (1767), Gluck gave much of the credit for his new operatic style. In 1773, Gluck went to Paris, where his first serious opera with a French libretto, (1774), was performed.
