By 1912 he had achieved a certain reputation, even internationally, and had a supportive dealer, D. H. Kahnweiler. Even more significant is the fact that Picasso was at the apogee of his close relationship with the French painter Georges Braque. It was in May of that year that Picasso had made the "first" collage, the famous horizontal oval, Still Life with Chair Caning Picasso soon followed Braque, even using the decorator's tricks of combing paint to give the effect of wood graining and of using decorators' materials like wallpaper, devices Braque had learned from his father. By our current meagre knowledge Glass's right to fame rests on his Fifth Symphony. The Fifth is a work of memorable lyrical power borne up on waves of ecstatic elation. There is something of Delius in the fully mature music but in its synapses are fused the fluent dynamics of Tchaikovsky. Until we hear Blomstedt, Pappano, Rattle, Salonen and Bostock conducting the Fifth with the world's best orchestras there will still be work to do for Glass. For the current generation the Second Symphony was, until now, a completely unknown quantity. He started out as a Western Union telegraph operator in 1868, and remained with the company for ten years. In 1879 he had accumulated sufficient capital to buy an interest in the Oakland and San Diego Telephone companies, and in 1889 he became general manager of the Edison General Electric Company in San Francisco, also known as the Pacific Phonograph Company (founded on the 7th January, 1889). In addition he was director of the Spokane Phonograph Company, Spokane Falls in Washington, and the West Coast Phonograph Company, Portland in Oregon. On the 23rd November, 1889, Louis T. Glass and his business associate William S. Arnold demonstrated their first coin-operated phonograph in the Palais Royal restaurant, 303 Sutter Street in San Francisco. They had been permitted by the proprietor, Fred Mergenthaler, to demonstrate the music machine in the restaurant. The machine, an Edison Class M Electric Phonograph Nevertheless, gentlemen, there is money in the nickel-in-the-slot phonograph. There is an immediate result for every company in the United States. If you will look over the income that we have had there you will see that where you furnish interesting material, the receipts do not materially drop off, and I believe that for three or four years there is an enormous amount of money right in the nickel-in-the-slot phonograph

Louis Comfort Tiffany was the first to develop this shimmering glass technique in America in 1893, inspired by his desire to reproduce a type of glass similiar to the ancient Greek and Roman glass he admired. The Favrile, (taken from the French word fabrile, or hand-made) became an immediate success. It was followed by Frederick Carder's designs for the Corning Glass Works' (Steuben) with a similiar type glass called Aurene and Martin Bach's introduction of Quezal for his firm Quezal Art Glass and Decorating Company. Iridescent glass is characterized by a shimmering surface which changes colors in the light. Theses companies produced exquisite examples in gold, green and blue for lamps, perfume bottles, decorative and functional objects.
