5-0 out of 5 stars Biochem Book
I got this book for one of my nursing classes. The book is pretty much straight forward but I would totally recommend getting the solutions manual to help you with the odd problems and it also gives you practice quizes for each chapter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the most poorly written text I have ever had the misfortune to purchase
I've not read every chemistry book out there so I'm no expert on how this book stacks up against the rest, but as someone who has had the misfortune to have to read this book and learn the material, I'm incredibly disappointed in the quality of the teaching in this book. The author has managed to cram random questions in everywhere, without managing to actually address the concept covered by her question.Due to overly full classes, I was forced to take this class online and this book just does not cut it. In every chapter, I've had to scour the internet to find an actual explanation of the concept Timberlake was attempting to cover and often find much shorter, easier to understand explanations as well as better ways to use formulas to gain the desired answer. The additional questions and challenge questions are overly redundant and many of the challenge questions are impossible without a higher level of knowledge on the topic. This is a ridiculous concept for teaching in an online class format and due to the number of topics covered, what teacher has time to cover these in class and still cover everything in the semester. It seems Timberlake put many of the questions/problems in this text to toot her own horn on the level of her knowledge, rather than write the text to actually teach and then question for understanding.I'm so annoyed by this text after 10 weeks of it that I'm actually taking the time to write this review.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amazon has a problem and does nothing to fix it
This textbook was advertised as "Brand New" and in every brand new textbook is a intro page that states that a keycode comes with the textbook yet Amazon and the booksellers they contract with continue to sell this book as brand new and ALWAYS fail to provide a keycode.A simple solution that other "honest" booksellers utilize with textbooks such as these is to advertise the textbook as "Text Only" when selling it without a keycode so buyers are never mislead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
My book was delivered on time! The high shipping price is one thing if you get what you ordered and it is delivered on time, but maddening when you are paying for two day shipping and it doesn't make it. Very pleased, the book is exactly what I wanted. All the materials made it.The shipping was a bit expensive but as I live in Alaska I expected such.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Professors and the Textbook fail...
This book is the answer.I have a very confusing professor and an incredibly boring O Chem book, but this book is short, and to the point. It tells you exactly what you need to know and is very good about giving the logical reason behind mechanisms.I only wish I had bought this book earlier when I was still studying basic O Chem because it would have helped me build a better foundation. One downfall of this book is that it does not always explicitly show you the curly arrows of mechanisms, and in that sense, you still need a professor to actively show that to you.But otherwise, this is an awesome book which does not put you to sleep and is very effective in presenting the main points of Organic Chemistry.Don't let the boring cover fool you! This one's a keeper. ... Product Description
Developing the green organic program at the University of Oregon, Kenneth Doxsee and James Hutchison saw the urgent need and rapidly growing demand for green chemistry laboratory materials. This lab text describes the tools and strategies of green chemistry, and the lab experiments that allow investigation of organic chemistry concepts and techniques in a greener laboratory setting. GREEN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY: STRATEGIES, TOOLS AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS was developed and successfully tested as a direct replacement of the traditional organic chemistry laboratory curriculum. Thus, the conceptual themes and experimental techniques important to the modern practice of organic chemistry can be taught in the context of more environmentally-benign laboratory experiments. Students acquire the tools to assess the health and environmental impacts of chemical processes and the strategies to improve develop new processes that are less harmful to human health and the environment. The curriculum introduces a number of state-of-the-art experiments and reduces reliance on expensive environmental controls, such as fume hoods. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The future of organic chemistry training
As an organic chemistry student, I was concerned that I wasn't learning the appropriate way to think about organic synthesis. Most of the preoccupation with organic chemistry in the lab is just with the mastery of technique and familiarity with reagents. This book goes much further than the typical approach to organic chemistry.

The book is mainly composed of two sections: a 100pg primer on green organic chemistry reviewed in the next section, and then a 150pg set of 19 laboratory experiments.

Part 1: Overview of Green Organic Chemistry

The book begins with an overview of fundamental concepts outside of but related to organic chemistry such as: toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental problems caused by organic synthesis, and environmental risk assessment.

The second part of the introductory section then introduces the main concepts of green chemistry such as alternative solvent usage. As a chem student this is especially useful not just because it provides a wonderful introduction to creative thinking in choosing solvents, but also because it provides a concise review of conventional solvents and their properties. It also provides a beautiful table with solubility, environmental fate, and hazard data.It then concludes the solvent section with how to design new solvents, and ultimately how to design syntheses without solvents.

It then explores the use of alternative reagents - such as biologically produced reagents, and even the use of light as a reagent. This section moves into a wonderful section on how to design a reaction efficiently and cleanly, providing green metrics like "atom economy."It then gives examples of how certain green alternatives have been made (such as hydroflurocarbons replacing ozone damaging chlorofluorocarbons)

Part 2: Laboratory Experiments

The structure of each lab is as follows: chemical concepts you will learn, the green lessons being shown, how long the experiment will take, a historical and scientific introduction to the processes in the experiment, a pre-lab preparation, the procedure, post-lab questions, technical tips concerning procedure, and troubleshooting.

Some of the experiments will be familiar to students of organic chemistry, such as bromination of alkenes, but many of the reactions are things that seem relatively new to the organic chemistry lab syllabus, such as: combinatorial chemistry methods, metallation, and solid-phase photochemistry. This new set of experiments is very refreshing and avoids the redundancy of other organic lab experiments.

Although some of the experimental protocol refers you to outside sources in order to understand the material better (I would have preferred and entirely internally self-sufficient book), this is understandable given that much of this information has been produced elsewhere and doesn't need to be reprinted.

Conclusion:
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of several small reasons:

1) The book, being an environmentally conscious endeavor, should have been printed in smaller font and single spaced (it is double and the font is somewhat large). This probably could have cut at least 50 pages from the book.

2) I would have preferred there to be little or no recourse to outside sources of information.Or if there was recourse to outside material, a more inspiring problem solving approach would have been welcome to inspire the reader to figure it out on his or her own.Normally I just want to understand something, and taking the time to look elsewhere for it seemed unnecessary.

All in all the book is very exciting, and so long as students are willing to reflect and do some outside reading, it is a welcome and inspiring push in the right direction.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't understand Organic Chemistry then get this book.
I am currently teaching myself Biochemistry, but I was coming across alot of rough spots in that text.My undergraduate degree was in psychology, so I don't have an extensive biology or chemistry background.I picked up McMurry's text to help supplement some of the concepts I wasn't understanding in the biochemistry text and was surprised at how well he explains the material. From reading his text I feel that I am developing a strong background in organic chemistry to eventually understand biochemistry. Also, I'm finding alot of interest in organic chemistry on it's own because of how McMurry presents the information.

If you're looking for an organic chemistry text that presents the information in a manner that allows for heightened understanding than pick up this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK - BUT STAY AWAY FROM CHM247 AT U of T
This textbook was good - I just hate organic chemistry! I would advise you to buy this book if you need it - just don't go past CHM138 at the University of Toronto, because CHM247 is a pain in the ass.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok for Introductory OChem
Like many have mentioned, the book is good for beginners and intro classes. The problems and material are relatively "simple." If that is all you require, "easy," not very indepth and just the simple basics, the book does it's job.

1-0 out of 5 stars A low-level text masquerading as a rigorous organic text
I have taught undergraduate organic chemistry for almost 10 years and have used this book (not by choice) for most of them. This book is incredibly easy to read and that is why many students like it.But the price that the instructor pays for that is in it's lack of depth. This book is NOT rigorous enough for the average science major/pre-professional student. In fact, I have used one semester, nursing level texts that were more rigorous than this book (Harold Hart's Organic Chemistry: A Short Course comes to mind). If you want a comprehensive and rigorous 2-semester organic text, I would recommend Loudon's Organic Chemistry far ahead of this nice and pretty but shallow text.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good intro book.
Definitely. It's a great book for first-year organic, I think, regardless of what major you're in, because McMurry seeks to present the foundations of organic knowledge. While it's not as complex as some other books, I think it certainly allows the reader to get a good grasp on what's going on. The fact that it tends to be a light read is a good one -- especially on those nights before the exam when you have to skim through several chapters before morning arrives. :)

So yes. The book itself is very well-presented, with well-diagrammed reactions, colors, and figures that help supplement the text. The textual portions themselves can be a little on the weak side, meaning you actually have to listen to your professor in class. However, if you want a more rigorous and advanced approach to organic chemistry... look up Jerry March. ... Read more

The book was brand new just like its description. Arrived earlier than expected time, and I'm very pleased with my purchase

5-0 out of 5 stars best textbook
this book is recomanded for any people who are interested in organic chemistry.
it is so easy to read and understand

4-0 out of 5 stars good for self-teaching; make sure you get the associated solutions manual
this book is great for two main reasons:
1) the way my orgo class is set up, the prof teaches pretty much out of the book. so i mean if you don't go to class, that's fine. reason for that? because we use this text, which does a great job of explaining everything. it covers all the models that can help you more easily visualize things in your mind, like orbital-level models when visualizing mechanisms. while some of the earlier chapters, like the one on stereochemistry, can still be a little confusing, the text is overall well-written.
GRADE: A-

2) PROBLEMS: problems are the bread and butter for doing well in orgo. this book provides a lot of problems and equips you to think in the right way in order to do well in any organic class. furthermore, the problems are pretty appropriate; there are none that are too difficult given the material that is actually covered in the textbook. i highly recommend getting the solutions manual for the sole reason of checking answers. if you hope to find a solutions manual that will explain why you did something wrong, you'll be left disappointed as it will only leave you more confused in its attempt to explain how it arrived at the right answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for chem majors
After one term of having this book, I decided to become
a chemist. It grabbed me really hard and made me realize
the complexity and wonder of chemistry (something I hadn't experienced with freshman chem.)If you are a chemistry major, this is definitely the book you will want to use.If your prof is using a different text, I'd definitely keep a copy of this one to use as a second opinion, at least. It is extremely well-written and it's written at a high level. In other words, it
doesn't just string you along and give you the basics...
it delves deeply into reaction mechanisms and what is
actually happening in each reaction.Product yields for
many reactions are included, and this is quite useful.
The writing style makes you learn a new way of thinking - that of a scientist. At times, the syntax is a little "brainy"
(they refer to acetone by its IUPAC name, "propanone",
for instance, and they refer to ethylene oxide as "oxacyclopropane".)I had an earlier version of this book in class when I took organic many years ago, but the revisions are mostly in presentation and in the problem sets.True, the problems in each chapter are not always good.If your instructor is good, they will provide their own problems to supplement the book's.But my suggestion is to go ahead and just do a web search for old exams and problems given by profs at other schools. Many of these are great and will give you tons of insight. For those who have already graduated, this is a good and up-to-date book to keep with you in your graduate studies or in the lab if you work in such a capacity. ... Product Description

Based on the premise that many, if not most, reactions in organic chemistry can be explained by variations of fundamental acid-base concepts, Organic Chemistry: An Acid–Base Approach provides a framework for understanding the subject that goes beyond mere memorization. The individual steps in many important mechanisms rely on acid–base reactions, and the ability to see these relationships makes understanding organic chemistry easier. Using several techniques to develop a relational understanding, this textbook helps students fully grasp the essential concepts at the root of organic chemistry.

Providing a practical learning experience with numerous opportunities for self-testing, the book contains:

  • Checklists of what students need to know before they begin to study a topic
  • Checklists of concepts to be fully understood before moving to the next subject area
  • Homework problems directly tied to each concept at the end of each chapter
  • Embedded problems with answers throughout the material
  • Experimental details and mechanisms for key reactions

The reactions and mechanisms contained in the book describe the most fundamental concepts that are used in industry, biological chemistry and biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacy. The concepts presented constitute the fundamental basis of life processes, making them critical to the study of medicine. Reflecting this emphasis, most chapters end with a brief section that describes biological applications for each concept. This text provides students with the skills to proceed to the next level of study, offering a fundamental understanding of acids and bases applied to organic transformations and organic molecules.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vogel is the man
The new Vogel is not as detailed in basic techniques but does manage to cover basic processes in a way seldom seen in modern organic lab guides. I should be on the shelf of every serious organic and biochemist along with the Fieser & Fieser series "Reagents for Organic Chemistry".

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate textbook on practical organic synthesis
It has the most trustworthy procedures for the synthesis of organic compounds with the underlying philosophy behind the reactions complete with the mechanism. Even briefly described procedures are easy to follow. An example in point is the Swern's oxidation. It also includes characterization of compounds using both chemical and spectroscopic methods thus covering the whole spectrum of practical organic chemistry. Almost all the other information to be required by an organic synthetic chemist in the laboratory is also included. I do not know of any other single book that can rival the Vogel. I, however, would very much like to see a moderately priced new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars good text, forbidding price
The book is very good for reference, yet it is too expensive for graduate students. I would also suggest taking $$$off, relative to March's and C&S's good text, this one is really forbidding.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible for Organic Laboratory
I took an undergraduate course on advanced organic laboratory method andVogel was meant to be an incredible reference and life-saver.Theoverwhelming size of the book might seem somewhat frightening yet theuseful information is worth the size and money.

Pavia's"Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques" might seem to bea water-down version of Vogel.Vogel is extremely well-written anddetailed in laboratory tecniques such as chromatography, distillation,HPLC, crystallization, extraction, etc.A chapter is also devoted todiscussion of solvents and reagents, which helps tremendously forseparation experiments.

Vogel also discusses aliphatic, heterocyclic, andaromatic compounds and introduces spectroscopic methods.Vogel isrecommended for advanced lab course that requires frequent modification oflab procedures and reference for chemists.

3-0 out of 5 stars Time for a new edition
This book is really good but it's time for a new edition ! Compared toanother excellent book (Jerry March) it is also too expensive. I would give5 stars to a new and cheaper edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An introduction to general, Organic and Biological Chemistry by Timberlake
This book is very easy to understand, even for someone who does not any science background. Good.

5-0 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise
I ordered the Chemistry 9e by Timberlake; the seller was The Book Czars.I was so pleased to find my book in the mailbox today, June 1.I had just placed the order on May 28- standard shipping.I received the book earlier than expected! The book is in excellent condition. Thanks for your prompt and superior service!

1-0 out of 5 stars VERY poor service
I purchased this book from Knaptown booksellers. The original ad stated that this text was in "excellent condition and included an interactive CD."The book arrived 13 days after ordering in less than fair condition and without a CD.After three attempts to contact the seller, and no response, I just chalked it up to shady retail practices. If you have a choice of retailers, STAY AWAY from Knaptown book sellers.I was THOROUGHLY DISSATISFIED!

5-0 out of 5 stars As expected but Access Code used
As expected but the ACCESS CODE was used already so could not use the online services.

4-0 out of 5 stars good service
the book came in a better condition than i thought it was going to be, i ordered it used and it was practically new when i got it, the only downside was that the shipping was a bit slow, i expected the book days sooner than i got it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for speediness of service!
Book wasn't in as good of condition as I had expected but it was good enough. It had a good price and got here pretty quickly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Purchased for school. It made the labs easy to perform. The techniques are very well described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for my class!
Book was perfect for my course! Author had great introductions and experiments were written in great detail!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good.
Whats nice about this book is that the labs actually work, quite a change from gen. chem for me. All you need to know is included and you're not left confused about anything.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good content, poor construction
Having owned the previous version of this book, I would have to say that the layout in this new version is much more linear and easy to follow. In addition to new experiments, the instructions are clear for a beginning organic lab student. That being said, however, the material that the book is constructed from is sub par...the pages are very delicate, seeming to be made of tissue paper...Over all, I would recommend this book for its content, but not for the craftsmanship. ...
