4-0 out of 5 stars Chem Book
I found the book in great condition and got it in great time. Thanks seller!

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible condition
I bought an item that claimed to be in excellent condition, minimal highlighter markings as well as wear and tear. The item I received is full of highlighter and the pages are extremely warn. They are bent, dirty, and not something I would have paid 95 dollars for had I seen it first.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't advertise the fact that it's the international edition.
The book is certainly in great condition. but I didn't know this was the copyright-violating international edition!!! Most of the books I looked at online that were the international edition said so in the description. For this seller, the only clue which I didn't pay much attention to when looking for the book is a small subtitle on the cover that says international edition. Since I didn't know or didn't really care what the regular cover looked like this was easy to overlook.

So anyway, I have no idea yet whether the edition is the same or not, the sellers who advertise the international addition say it's the same, but on the cover it SAYS its different from the North American version. I was a little annoyed to find out that this wasn't the regular version, since I think I paid a little more for this one which I thought was regular, and also the shipping took a little longer than my other books.

So yeah I felt like this seller should have pointed that out, but as I said, the condition of the book is great, so that is a plus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry in Context
I needed this textbook for my Chem 104 class, and I was not going to pay full price at the bookstore. Not only did I save $85 on this text, but the book is completely new. It had never been opened, and was in perfect condition. Everything matches the book they're selling on campus. I'll definitely buy from these guys again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Accurate Vendor
I purchased a very expensive text at a reasonable price. The used description was accurate and I got the textbook ASAP which was important since I ordered it after the class started. These guys are my first pick next time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of enlightening knowledge
Well, this book is a boring read. However, if you need practical knowledge on environmental chemistry then this is a good book to start with. You need to have a decently strong chemistry background to be able to understand it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent in covering thoroughly the chemical aspects of energy and environmental problems
I found the first edition of this book very useful for myself and my students as a reference and the second edition is even more useful. The book is excellent in covering thoroughly the chemical aspects of energy and environmental problems. The book is divided into four parts: Energy, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere/Lithosphere, Biosphere.

The authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of petroleum, natural gas, coal and the ways ofhandling the emission of CO2.They include chapters on nuclear, renewable energy, and energy utilization.

I'm particularly impressed with the use of figures which show the many aspects of a system being discussed, with the different contributions from different sources happening at the same time. For instance what happens to the energy annually on earth, organic carbonchanging to fossil fuels, energy storage in photosynthesis, maximum work, and systems efficiency, etc. These are great for understanding how many aspects there are to a process.

The section on the atmosphere has chapters that covers air pollution, ozone, climate changes, nitrogen and oxygen chemistry. The section on the hydrosphere covers water resources from a global perspective, properties of water, the importance of acids-bases, solubility, redox reactions, the chemistry of nitrogen and phosphorous.Water quality pollution and its treatment are covered in detail. The section on the biosphere covers toxic materials, the nitrogen cycle in food production use of fertilizers and insecticides.

Dimensional analysis is used extensively throughout and in assigned problems. For instance they calculate an estimate of the energy in a moderate rainstorm to be over a million tons of TNT. They actually show the calculations for other interesting problems such as the increase in energy used in the future with even a small 2.5% annual increase.

You won't find a better or more even-handed exposition of the natural cycles on the Earth emphasizing the importance of understanding the chemistry involved, and our options to keep us and the Earth healthy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but accessible
Chemistry of the Environment is a great overview of the chemical processes of environmental change. There is a lot of in-depth discussion of air pollution and ozone depletion, as well as water pollution. The book covers virtually every topic in environmental sciences, even going into detail in some ares that are usually classified as environmental geology. The book is written clearly and is accessible for most people who have taken general chemistry courses. A background in organic chemistry would be helpful but is not necessary. This is one of those textbooks that I kept at the end of the semester, to have as a reference guide. ... Read more

The aim of this book is to describe some aspects of the chemistry and chemical ecology which are found in the garden.

In the garden there are numerous interactions between plants, the soil and with other organisms in which chemistry plays a central mediating role. The discussion concerns several of the chemically and ecologically interesting compounds that are produced by common ornamental garden plants and vegetables and by the predators that attack them.

Many chemists are amateur gardeners and this book is directed at them as well as those with a general interest in the scientific processes involved in the garden.

Product Description

Chemistry in the Community (ChemCom) is a year-long high school chemistry course for college-bound students, structured around community issues related to chemistry.  The course is about 50% laboratory-based, and features decision-making activities which give students practice in applying their chemistry knowledge in realistic decision-making situations. Concepts are presented on a "need-to-know" basis, allowing students to experience the use and application of their chemistry learning, leading to a greater sense of motivation and a feeling of ownership of their new knowledge. Because of the nature of the issues covered in the specific units, students learn more organic and biochemistry than in traditional courses, as well as some environmental and industrial chemistry.

2-0 out of 5 stars Does not prepare you for future Chemistry courses
I remember having this book back when I took highschool Chemistry. At the time, I didnt think I wanted to go into Chemistry. I think this book is fine for highschoolers who arent gonna go on in Chemistry. But if you actually do go on in Chem this isnt a good book. It doesnt really teach you much. After this: I came into my first college Chem course having no idea how to do anything and struggled for the first half of the course. I went to a college prep highschool, of course I dont know if this text is meant to be college prep, it surely didnt prepare me for college. So overall id say, fine for a simple highschool non college prep chem course, bad for a college prep course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase!
The book displays information in a very creative and interesting manner which motivates my students to read it! Can't beat the price as well!

4-0 out of 5 stars Innovative Curriculum
Are your students tired of the traditional curriculum and bored with the dry presentation of your current text?ChemCom embeds the content standards of chemistry in a series of topical units designed to catch the interest of students and thus increase their involvement and learning.Units on Water, Resources, Petroleum and Air use numerous in-text activities to stimulate students into seeing how chemistry is vital to understanding these current environmental and political issues.Chemistry concepts are introduced and then later reinforced as the student progresses through the eight units.Interesting labs that non-science majors can relate to and learn from complement the many in-text activities. This curriculum is fun to teach and it works! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Effective
This book is easy to get through and explains the equations that you need well. I'm using it for a class right now, but it is a great intro book for environmental engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
The book was very good, looked like new, even though it said there were marks, there seemed like there wasn't any.It came at a reasonably good time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just as promised, thanks
the book arrived when and how they said it would in the condition they promised. Thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who don't focus on environment, but need to learn about it
Generic and simple. I took a required class in basic environmental engineering and was pretty happy with this book. It's simple to use and does not assume and prior knowledge of environmental engineering besides common sense. Everything is explained well and without indulging into the never ending and unnecessary details as a lot of text books do. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author wasn't trying to push an agenda (something I thought came standard with any book dealing with the environment). All of the information was objective and discussed from a neutral "know what it is, and what it does, and why" perspective. The chapter about global warming actually almost seemed to downplay the artificial and hyped up urgency and extent of the issue by focusing on only on the numbers and nothing else. Not math intensive at all except maybe a few rates of growth/decay. Solid intro course book. However if you're not interested in the subject to begin with, this book won't change that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I bought this book as a reference for a college project I did about air pollution. It turned out to be the most valuable resource I had. Hill presents sophisticated information in an easy-to-understand manner. This book also made me realize the huge connection between air pollution and many other issues that the world faces today, and it helped me create a straight-forward list of actions my class mates could take to lower their personal contributions to air pollution. I got an "A" on my project, and I have a much better understanding of how my everyday choices cause air pollution, the consequences of those choices, and what I can do about it.
Furthermore, even though I focused on the sections involving air pollution, this book also has great information on other types of pollution such as water and solid waste. It is a great introduction to the pollution problem and makes a wonderful resource for a project, an environmental science class, or just personal curiosity. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting a handle on Green Chemistry
I haven't read the entire book, though it is small.I recently heard the authors speak and was happy to have some framework put to the topic and some parameters drawn that offer some guidelines for understanding.Previously the term "green chemistry" was as fuzzy as the electron cloud.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal Work: ThePrinciples of Green Chemistry
This is the seminal reference on the widely invoked "12 Principles of Green Chemistry."This book is written by cofounders of the EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award,":a Synthetic Chemist and an expert in Environmental Policy. This book is unique in delivering a broad purview of industry practices as it pertains to the environment in a succinct manner. This is enabled by the distillation of the "12 Principles" which is an excellent organizing scheme. A key finding is the interdependency of the Principles and how they drive improved business performance for adopters.

"The 12 Principles of Green Chemistry" is invoked as a mantra for a revolution in the practice and methodologies of synthetic chemistry by research centers and innovators throughout the world. Driving even a few of these principles into practice has become a furtive source of product and process innovations in the field. The text is often cited in technical papers and thus a key reference book.

The narrative is accessible while providing rich examples ripe for follow-up investigation by technical readers.

As a technology strategist I highly recommend "Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice" for its insightregarding the drivers of the future development of the chemical and materials industries. ... Read more

Product Description
This long awaited and thoroughly updated version of the classictext (Plenum Press, 1970) explains the subject of electrochemistry inclear, straightforward language for undergraduates and maturescientists who want to understand solutions. Like its predecessor, thenew text presents the electrochemistry of solutions at the molecularlevel. The Second Edition takes full advantage of the advances inmicroscopy, computing power, and industrial applications in thequarter century since the publication of the First Edition. Such newtechniques include scanning-tunneling microscopy, which enables us tosee atoms on electrodes; and new computers capable of moleculardynamics calculations that are used in arriving at experimentalvalues.
Chapter 10 starts with a detailed description of what happens whenlight strikes semi-conductor electrodes and splits water, thusproviding in hydrogen a clean fuel. There have of course beenrevolutionary advances here since the First Edition was written. Thebook also discusses electrochemical methods that may provide the mosteconomical path to many new syntheses - for example, thesynthesis of the textile, nylon. The broad area of the breakdown ofmaterial in moist air, and its electrochemistry is taken up in thesubstantial Chapter 12. Another exciting topic covered is theevolution of energy conversion and storage which lie at the cuttingedge of clean automobile development. Chapter 14 presents from a freshperspective a discussion of electrochemical mechanisms in Biology, andChapter 15 shows how new electrochemical approaches may potentiallyalleviate many environmental problems. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good treatment for those new to electrochemistry
The authors do a good job introducing the concepts of electrochemistry in a fairly readable and thorough manner. The individual chapters can be read more or less independently with minimal flipping back to earlier material for reference. The subject mater is handled at a level appropriate for an intermediate level student or for one not exceedingly familiar with electrochemistry.Exercises and problems are infrequent so this may not be a good stand alone text for an upper division class although I found the emphasis on conceptual understanding very valuable. In all a very good text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Electrochemistry Series!
These authors have a great writing style. This is a subject matter that has a potential to be very, very dry but the authors have somehow made it enjoyable. If they get into hardcore calculations and derivations that you might be a little rusty on, they anticipate that (I assume from lots of students' feedback) and include appendixes at the end of each chapter so that you don't need to run off and find the corresponding chapter in one of your math/physics/chemistry textbooks. They also have a very useful nomenclature guide (in the first book only) in case you keep forgetting what certain symbols mean and what units they are in. The footnotes are great and keep things from getting too dry. Overall, I would definitely recommend these three books.

Note: Unless you have a fetish for hard covers, get the paperbacks; they're half the cost. When I bought these books from amazon.com, it was very confusing to figure out which books to get. Here are the ISBN's of each of the three books in the series. This will save you some headache:

Product Description
Complex environmental problems are often reduced to an inappropriate level of simplicity. While this book does not seek to present a comprehensive scientific and technical coverage of all aspects of the subject matter, it makes the issues, ideas, and language of environmental engineering accessible and understandable to the nontechnical reader.
Improvements introduced in the fourth edition include a complete rewrite of the chapters dealing with risk assessment and ethics, the introduction of new theories of radiation damage, inclusion of environmental disasters like Chernobyl and Bhopal, and general updating of all the content, specifically that on radioactive waste.

Since this book was first published in 1972, several generations of students have become environmentally aware and conscious of their responsibilities to the planet earth. Many of these environmental pioneers are now teaching in colleges and universities, and have in their classes students with the same sense of dedication and resolve that they themselves brought to the discipline. In those days, it was sometimes difficult to explain what indeed environmental science or engineering was, and why the development of these fields was so important to the future of the earth and to human civilization. Today there is no question that the human species has the capability of destroying its collective home, and that we have indeed taken major steps toward doing exactly that.

And yet, while, a lot has changed in a generation, much has not. We still have air pollution; we still contaminate our water supplies; we still dispose of hazardous materials improperly; we still destroy natural habitats as if no other species mattered. And worst of all, we still continue to populate the earth at an alarming rate. There is still a need for this book, and for the college and university courses that use it as a text, and perhaps this need is more acute now than it was several decades ago.

Although the battle to preserve the environment is still raging, some of the rules have changed. We now must take into account risk to humans, and be able to manipulate concepts of risk management. With increasing population, and fewer alternatives to waste disposal, this problem is intensified. Environmental laws have changed, and will no doubt continue to evolve. Attitudes toward the environment are often couched in what has become known as the environmental ethic. Finally, the environmental movement has become powerful politically, and environmentalism can be made to serve a political agenda.

In revising this book, we have attempted to incorporate the evolving nature of environmental sciences and engineering by adding chapters as necessary and eliminating material that is less germane to today's students. We have nevertheless maintained the essential feature of this book -- to package the more important aspects of environmental engineering science and technology in an organized manner and present this mainly technical material to a nonengineering audience.

This book has been used as a text in courses which require no prerequisites, although a high school knowledge of chemistry is important. A knowledge of college level algebra is also useful, but calculus is not required for the understanding of the technical and scientific concepts.

We do not intend for this book to be scientifically and technically complete. In fact, many complex environmental problems have been simplified to the threshold of pain for many engineers and scientists. Our objective, however, is not to impress nontechnical students with the rigors and complexities of pollution control technology but rather to make some of the language and ideas of environmental engineering and science more understandable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Environmental Pollution and Control textbook
This text is obviously a compilation of author's works. Some sections are extremely well written and organized.Other sections appear to be a scattered effort to address the topical issues related to the given section but with disjointed thoughts inserted so randomly that they appear to be simply an effort to check all of the boxes related to the given subject. It would be much easier to comprehend some of these sections if more tables, graphs, and bulleted lists were presented to make the desired points.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Balance
I continue to use this book as a practical and teaching resource. It is a good balance between the science and engineering aspects of environmental quality. The examples and problems are understandable for most undergraduates, and can be adapted to be more quantitative, if needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete, accurate and clear
I used this book as base for teaching of Environmental Technologies at university. It is really good, easy to follow andaddresses the main aspects of environmental pollution control. The only aspect that it does not cover is soil pollution. One strong point: the figures, graphs, exercises are very good!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to environmental pollution issues
This was a text book for my Environmental Security class.I learned a heckuva lot, and I really enjoyed reading it, too. It's well organized and helps you understand some technical issues relating to the environment without going over the non-technical major's head. The study/homework questions at the end of each chapter weren't too difficult and helped a lot in learning the material. ... Product Description
Up until the 1950s, waste disposal meant discharging it to the nearest river, burning it up or shipping it out to sea. Now we are paying the price. Current disposal and cleanup regulations have a different focus: correcting the problems caused by earlier misguided attitudes and maintaining a non-degrading environment. State and Federal clean air and water acts have created the need to identify and measure chemical components that affect the quality of surface and ground waters and the soils through which they flow. The easy-to-use structure of this book makes it a handy resource. The author summarizes the chemistry topics most important in environmental applications. He includes frequently used data such as: water solubilities, partition coefficients, natural abundance of trace metals in soil, and federal drinking water standards. Lists containing "rules of thumb" supply methods for making quick estimations.Applications of Environmental Chemistry provides the basic equations, theories, and principles you need to understand - at a practical level - frequently encountered topics in environmental chemistry. It does not overwhelm you with excess information but answers your most frequently asked questions clearly and succinctly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must have" book
Dr. Weiner's guide on environmental chemistry is a "must have" for consulting engineers of almost any discipline if for no other reason than it is a quick read and a good reference that can help the practicing professional be an expert as well as sound like an expert.

I appreciate his presentation of principles and theories in simplified form so that, when necessary, I can think things through, based on fundamentals. His rules are just what a practicing consulting engineer needs when dealing with new problems in the field where quick estimates are needed.

It is obvious that Dr. Weiner has combined long years of experience as a chemistry professor from a good university with many years as an active water quality consultant, because he knows what professionals need to know and he knows how to explain it in a down-to-earth manner.

What also is evident is that Dr. Weiner served on the Colorado State Regulators Board because he is able to explain what regulators usually inquire about. His eight years on the Colorado Water Quality Commission paid off for all of us grateful readers!

In essence, Dr. Weiner has provided an easy-to-use book with a logical structure that makes it a handy resource. This book, though selling for nearly [...], will pay for itself many times over on your first water quality assignment. Thanks to the publishers for making it available. ... Read more
