1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing at the outset
I've just opened this book to study for an important test. In only the first few minutes I've wasted time working through the overly long, labored explanations that can't get to the point. On page 64 I found a major error that had no easy-to-find errata online: the authors reused an image from a question on page 59. The answer they gave didn't relate to the image or the explanation wasting more of my time trying to figure out where their mistake was.

If this is typical of the shoddy editing and writing in this book I would be better off using Wikipedia to study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good as a sectional review
As with other books in the pretest series, if each section is read as a whole unit, with greater focus on the answers to the questions rather than the questions themselves, it provides a solid foundation for the biochemistry shelf. In fact, the arrangement of the topics allows for better comprehension of bulky topics like biochem for which the bullet-point style of BRS is not suited.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Very Good For Genetics but has some errors
Very very good book to prepare for test questions in your class for Genetics. Excellent questions for Genetics!!! Does contain some errors.

Is it worth buying? Yes! I know that I learn best by doing questions. Worthy investment for me. ... Read more

delivered in a timely manner. would buy from this seller again. book was in awesome condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Biochem Resource
This book is a fabulous resource for anyone who wants a better understanding or really any decent understanding of biochemistry. What I liked most about this text is that each section starts generally (ie: purpose of the process, how it ties in as a whole, key steps and enzymes/products) then moves to the specifics (ie: all the steps, enzymes, products, and other details that are nice to know but not likely to be tested on). The book also constantly incorporates links between different processes/cycles and reminds you of where certain products are used, things that interfere with enzymes/products, etc. I will give the disclaimer that this book is a bit more prose versus quick bullet point review, although it is informative without being overly detailed, yet is rich in information. It is an easy read though. I'd recommend this book, it helped me out alot my first year of med school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful text or supplement
I purchased this as a gift for an outstanding student to use at college. It is colorful, concise and speaks well to the the reader who has to master a difficult subject.
It's imperative that students of science understand how pervasive chemistry is - not just a course to "get through" - a body of knowledge which gives insight into how their science "works".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little Supplement for visual learning of Medical Biochemistry
This book saved me in the first year of medical school.I had a very poorly organized biochemistry textbook, with lectures that were not any better.I am a visual learner and needed large, detailed pictures that give an idea of the 'big picture.'That is where this small text excelled. Most of the major, basic pathways needed in medical biochemistry are covered--from TCA cycle to purine, pyrimidine, fat, and amino acid metabolism.I was not a science major in college so I needed major reviews on biochemistry.

Each 'system' is usually depicted on 2 adjacent pages, with many annotations, and usually a short, concise clinical note; but overall the majority of the page is taken up by the diagrams.

If you like systems diagrams to learn with, and need some good, visual, 'big picture' biochemistry study aids, I highly recommend this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars well orgainized summary
I am a first year med student with only a little previous knowledge of chemistry and therefore was a little daunted by the prospect of biochemistry. I found Salway's book allayed a lot of my fears. the reason I found it so helpful was that the format of highlighting each path and discussing the key substrates and enzymes helped focus me in on what was important. I found this a great adjunct to my main biochem text and would highly recommend this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Med student review
Even with all of the positive reviews on this book, I must say that I was a bit disappointed. The factual recall that the book elicits is good but it does not go beyond that.A straight recall of facts with no description of learning how to solve the problems is what the book is good for.Just my two cents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource After You've Read the Textbook
I was surprised how organized and useful this book was. I read Lippincott's Biochem which is a good foundation but only gives you a grasp on large concepts. Deja Review is like the magnifying glass to solidify your basic knowledge and then help you retain the specifics you need to know for the boards.

What separates Deja from the rest of the pack is the question-answer, two column format, they use. This simple format makes learning and remembering so much easier. This is Deja's edge over BRS or Rapid Review. The other two are thorough, but Deja's format will allow you to retain the most info. The format actually makes this book like a fun quiz game you can play with your study buddies or just pull out while you're waiting in line. Each question builds on the next so it actually tries to teach you, But you have to already have a solid background in Biochem or this book will totally be lost on you. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry needs more info
For someone that is detailed oriented, I found this book not to be useful. The main points of biochemistry were summed up, but the exact details were forgotten.I had this book assigned to me for graduate school, and I could've done without it.I ended up using my undergraduate text to help explain the details that the professor was looking for on essay questions instead of this book. However, it is useful for someone that wants a basic overview on biochemistry.May even be a good introductory for AP Bio students or chemistry students in high school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great biochemistry book!
This book clearly and concisely explains biochemistry terms and concepts.I was having trouble understanding the information in the textbook for my class, and this book helps pull it together and make it all make sense. It's been a lifesaver for me this semester!

3-0 out of 5 stars Tight, concise, pretty nice, right price.
This book is a super concise quick read on the subject. It covers the main points without boggling you with information overload on deatils. I wish it would show more chemical structure at times to make the logical of transformations more transparent;in the metabolism sections particularly. The graphics are minimalmistic, this mode is not exploited by the authors. It does not make much of an attempt to help you better understand the logic of the subject in the metabolism section. Overall I believe the book delivers what it promises. Still I wish there was a concise review book with good graphic displays, interesting writing that revealed the beauty and logic of the subject more. I give this book a C to B- overall.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!!!
This book was my lifeline when I took Biochemistry this past year. Everything is logically organized and the chapters are easy to read andquick to comprehend. The level of detail provided is perfect for anundergraduate level biochemistry course. The diagrams, while simplistic, are easy to understand and remember for use on exams. The only drawbackmight be a failure to integrate all the different metabolic pathways, butthis is a shortcoming found in many textbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent brief presentation of numerous topics in biochem
The book is a very good overview of biochemical processes, covering many significant topics.Detail level is moderate -- not as detailed as an indepth study, which I found a bit disappointing in topics that were ofspecial interest to me, but on the other hand the information is fairlycomplete for review or introductory purposes.Lots of diagrams supplementthe text, and most provide an extra illumination of the topic, which Iappreciated.Topics cover: cells and structure, amino acids and proteins, enzymes, antibodies, membranes, DNA and RNA (which could have been left outof this book, since it is covered in much more detail in the Instant Notesin Molecular Biology volume), protein synthesis, recombinant DNA,carbohydrate/lipid/nitrogen metabolism, respiration (Krebs Cycle), and afinal chapter that covers muscle contraction, nerve conduction andneurotransmitters -- although the info here is too brief -- and collagen. Viruses are also covered, altho again they are covered in more detail inInstant Notes in Microbiology.I'm using this book along with withBiochemistry by Champe (great illustrations -- more info on the biologicalprocesses) to get a basic understanding of biochem. This book could be agreat reference for a student/professional review or for a quick look-up ofprocesses or concepts.Brief mention is made, also, of medical conditionsresulting from errors, mutations, or deficiencies in the topics covered, but I would like to have seen more of this type of information (e.g., therealistic consequences).Otherwise, very pleased with the book, bothinformation contained in the text and the layout of the diagrams. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Cannot use this book in Europe.
As I have the new German manuals about Biochemie nach Dr. Schüssler written by Thomas Feichtinger, this very old book about Dr Schuessler's Biochemistry by J.B.Chapman and J.S. Cogswell was a waste of money for me.
It is a copy of a very old book, something I did not see in the information given by amazon before I ordered it.
In addition to that the names of the tissue salts used in this book are different from the ones we use in Europe.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Schuessler's Biochemistry by J. B. Chapman M.D.
Dr. Chapman's book on the "Biochemic System of Healing" developed by Dr. Schuessler is excellent. From this book they can learn to use this gentle method of healing so often needed in this hardened world.I learned Schuessler's theory from a much more lengthy book, but I feel Chapman's book, in its condensed form, is in no way lacking. 1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
What a waste of paper.I bought this book because I was on the verge of failing my first exam. This book was useless and failed to provide basic information onterminology you need to know to even pass biochem.I have so many issues with this book, it would take me until the end of time to list them.Save your money and buy another book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful for college level biochemistry
I was hoping for a supplemental to my undergrad biochem course. This book breezes over topics a little too quickly.I thought the enzyme kinetics chapter could have been more detailed.I wouldn't recommend this for college students, might be good for people generally interested in biochemistry without any of the details.

2-0 out of 5 stars Brief overview
Very concise and great for a brief overview, but not much detail for important topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent outline and overview
This little review and outline packs a lot of information into only about 130 pages. This means it makes for fairly dense reading given the technical level but it's obviously intended for the biochem or serious student. The book consists of 15 chapters ranging from 5 to 20 pages in length, depending on the subject. Key concepts or facts are emphasized and often highlighted in dark gray boxes throughout the text, and some chapters include solved problems. A sampling of the chapter titles includes Proteins; Lipids and Membranes; Enzyme Catalysis and Kinetics; Carhohydrate Metabolism; the Citric Acid Cycle; Nitrogen Metabolism; and Gene Expression and Protein Synthesis.

There are about 100 illustrations ranging from graphs and tables to the usual molecular structures and also diagrams of more complex molelcular reactions that require several steps or mechanisms such as the elongation step of polypeptide synthesis, the metabolic pathways of beta oxidation, as well as illustrations of longer ones requiring many steps, like the citric acid cycle, the role of amino transferases and glutamate dehydrogenase in nitrogen metabolism, the urea cycle and metabolism, and others.

Overall this is a useful little book that is one of the most concise and informative presentations of the most important concepts in biochemistry that I've seen, and at only nine bucks the price is right too. ... Read more

    Product Description
Exercise Biochemistry brings an admittedly difficult and technical subject to life. Extremely user- and student-friendly, it is written in conversational style by Vassilis Mougios, who poses and then answers questions as if in conversation with a student. Mougios does an excellent job of making the information interesting by using simple language without compromising scientific accuracy and content. He also uses ample analogies, related works of art, and numerous illustrations to drive home his points for readers.

The result is that Exercise Biochemistry is a highly informative and illuminating text on the effects of exercise on molecular-level functioning. It presents the basics of biochemistry as well as in-depth coverage of exercise biochemistry. The book uses key terms, sidebars, and questions and problems posed at the end of each chapter to facilitate learning. It also covers metabolism, endocrinology, and assessment all in one volume, unlike other exercise biochemistry books.

In exploring all of these topics, Exercise Biochemistry makes the case for exercise biochemistry to have a stand-alone textbook. In fact, this book will encourage more universities to introduce exercise biochemistry courses to their curricula. Having the necessary topics of basic biochemistry in a single volume will facilitate the work of both instructors and students.

Exercise Biochemistry will also be useful to graduate students in sport science who have not been formally introduced to exercise biochemistry during their undergraduate programs. Additionally, it can supplement exercise physiology textbooks with its coverage of the molecular basis of physiological processes. This book is also for physical education and sport professionals who have an interest in how the human body functions during and after exercise. And this book is addressed to health scientists who are interested in the transformations in human metabolism brought about by physical activity.

The book is organized in four parts. Part I introduces readers to biochemistry basics, including chapters on metabolism, proteins, nucleic acids and gene expression, and carbohydrates and lipids. Part II consists of two chapters that explore neural control of movement and muscle contraction. The essence of the book is found in part III, which details exercise metabolism in its six chapters. Included are chapters on carbohydrate, lipid, and protein metabolism in exercise; compounds of high phosphoryl transfer potential; effects of exercise on gene expression; and integration of exercise metabolism. In part IV, the author focuses on biochemical assessment of people who exercise, with chapters on iron status, metabolites, and enzymes and hormones. Simple biochemical tests are provided to assess an athlete’s health and performance.

Exercise Biochemistry is a highly readable book that serves as a source for understanding how exercise changes bodily functions. The text is useful for both students and practitioners alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars made me love biochemistry
throughout my stay in med school, I never understood why I must be subjected to all those biochemical details. I was aware, of course, that I needed to understand the basic chemical processes that affected the human body, but I couldn't find any reason why my professors would treat medical students as if they were biochem majors. Boy, was I glad when the biochemistry class was over, and I passed the darn course!
I was to meet this same course a few years ago, when I had to sit for the USMLE I. Like a sick child who must swallow a bitter tablet, I reluctantly began to study biochem. Again.
It was a very pleasant surprise that the course was really interesting. I mean, I enjoyed it as much as I did physiology (and I always loved physiology!).
I realized that I came to love biochem because of this book. The authors knew how to give you solid biochemical reasons for those familiar clinical conditions. Contrary to my previous experiences in med school, I found out that biochemistry is indeed a very interesting vourse.
The only (small) problem that you may find with this book is, it could be too detailed at times. However, it covers the USMLE topics quite well. If you have read Kaplan's materials, you'd agree that there are very many similarities. I read both.
If you want to use it for the USMLE I exam, I suggest you first read the specific topics required for the exam. Afterwards, you may then the other areas that are not vital for the exam, if you are interested, and you have the extra time.
I wish I had this book much earlier. It's really nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good biochemistry review in outline form
This is a good review book for medical school. It offers great depth and details to the subject of biochemistry albeit it lacks the illustration and color of textbooks. The book is written in an outline form, so reading a chapter of Davidson's Biochemistry can be tedious; but then, there are those who like to study that way ... Product Description
The latest edition of Biochemistry Primer for Exercise Science provides upper-level undergraduate and graduate students with an understanding of the essential concepts of biochemistry—molecular biology, basic chemistry, metabolism, and transcription regulation—in an easy-to-understand format. This text builds on the success of the previous edition by offering new topics, new organization of chapters, greater interpretation and integration of key concepts, and new and improved illustrations that clarify the content.

With its updated information based on new research and ideas from exercise science and molecular biology and its greater interpretation of biochemistry in the context of the active human, Biochemistry Primer for Exercise Science, Third Edition, is the only text of its kind in this field. Students trained in traditional exercise physiology can understand basic concepts of energy, but without the knowledge gained from this book they might lack the ability to apply these principles to everyday life.

New information and approaches in this book include the following:

Reorganized chapters give greater attention to the mechanism behind the concepts. Basic metabolic pathways and mechanisms are outlined and the role of exercise in modulating those pathways and mechanisms is addressed.

A deeper and more thorough integration of the topics adds context and aids in comprehension.

New review questions with answers are provided.

A section on oxidative stress and its implications to lifestyle and health are included.

A new section covers signal transduction that leads to changes in the expression of genes and in the amounts of specific proteins.

A thoroughly revamped chapter covers bioenergetics with an overview of energy systems and their role in exercise. This is followed by the more rigorous thermodynamics concepts.

In addition, each chapter addresses the newest, most sophisticated information, discusses future research directions, and contains key points to reinforce understanding. The book also provides a list of abbreviations, conveniently located on the inside front cover, to help the reader become familiar with commonly used biochemistry terms; chapter summaries; a glossary; and a comprehensive reference list to help students absorb and apply the content.

This new edition fully integrates the concepts of biochemistry and physiology of exercise and provides critical information on how genes are controlled. In doing so, it melds the fields of human nutrition, physiology, and biochemistry into a more unifying science, and it presents students with the biochemistry content they need in order to understand the molecular aspects of human physical activity. The text helps prepare students for what lies ahead, and it is a great tool for professionals in related fields who want to learn about the biochemistry of exercise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Business
elkas98 is a very nice, personable and efficient business. Thankyou so much for sending my book in a very timely manner and definitely using a good delivery service like the USPS instead of UPS. My book was in perfect condition and arrived very fast. I do appreciate the wonderful and sincere email and note attached to my book wishing me success, and an A+ in the class. Thankyou for being a part of Amazon. The world could use more companies like yours. Great wishes to you also.

4-0 out of 5 stars good but needs editing
Writing a biochemistry text that is comprehensive, clear, and up to date (reflecting the gist of the thousands of research papers published each year) is an almost impossible task. This book gets most of the way through that task, but still falls noticeably short of perfection.Chief among the nagging shortcomings are charts and graphics which are sometimes unclear (perhaps 10% could be improved), and uneven editing of text. The defects in the graphics are not so much content as presentation -- grouping of items, labels, and font sizes are often not conducive to seeing what is what.

Examples of incomplete editing are chapter and section summaries that address points never mentioned in the text.Indeed, the summaries are usually quite good and one wishes that the same concision and clarity were more uniformly in evidence in the longer text expositions. In some of the sections drawing on recent research -- e.g. the coverage of DNA to RNA transcription in Chapter 11, there is sometimes an almost random cataloging of recent research -- i.e., here are all the things we know about this transcription factor, in no particular order and with no particular relationship to the (necessarily simplified) themes we are able to bring out in this book. For the most part, however, the organization imposed on the chaos of research is creditable and comprehensible.

So, in sum, the book reflects an almost superhuman amount of work, but is still flawed.I suspect the hard truth is that there is simply not sufficient demand for such a text to permit the industrial-scale enterprise that has made a book such as Campbell and Reece's Biology so superb and in effect a "category killer" in its field.

5-0 out of 5 stars better than expectation
The book is almost new, much better than I have expected. Thank you very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
The book was in the condition as described and arrived in atimely fashion!

1-0 out of 5 stars I hope this isn't the required text
This book is terrible. Taking notes from this book is a disaster because it's totally unorganized and in desperate need of editing. The sample problems are useless and I had to get out my general chem book to figure out how to work through many of them. The 4 star reviews must be by authors of this book or those making $$ selling it. If you are a professor please do not assign this book to your class it's a poor reference for those learning biochem for the first time. ... Read more
