Extractions: Last updated: October, 2002 A Links Go Key Resource Award in the Simulation Models topic This is a collection of interactive computer models and simulations of common analytical instruments and techniques. Most have a point-and-click interface; you click buttons and drag sliders to control variables and the model responds dynamically, usually faster than real time. I originally designed these models for students in my courses in Instrumental Analysis (an undergraduate laboratory course) and Spectrochemical Methods (a graduate lecture-based course). They were designed to be used by individual students either as homework assignments, for in-class use in a computer lab environment, or in the laboratory for the analysis of student-generated data. Some can be used by the instructor in lecture-demonstration environments. Student assignment handouts are attached to most of them. The mathematical basis for each model is described, including cell definitions and equations. PC users: Shift-click to download complete set of models as a ZIP file (700 Kbytes) Mac users: Shift-click to download complete set of models as a SIT file (500 Kbtes) Note: It is best to download the complete set of models initially, to make sure that you have all the pieces needed, then check back here occasionally for new models, which can be downloaded individually.

Broad, low tables were scattered about, which bristled with retorts, test-tubes, and little Bunsen lamps, with their blue flickering flames. There was only one student in the room, who was bending over a distant table absorbed in his work. At the sound of our steps he glanced round and sprang to his feet with a cry of pleasure. "Ive found it! Ive found it," he shouted to my companion, running towards us with a test-tube in his hand. "I have found a re-agent which is precipitated by hemoglobin, and by nothing else." Had he discovered a gold mine, greater delight could not have shone upon his features "Dr. Watson, Mr. Sherlock Holmes," said Stamford, introducing us.

Extractions: C arbon-based electrode materials (e.g., carbon fibers, glassy carbon, and graphite) are used in various electrochemical technologies, including electroanalysis, energy storage devices, and electrosynthesis. These materials have similar microstructures consisting of layers of condensed, six-membered aromatic rings with sp -hybridized carbon atoms trigonally bonded to one another. The crystallite size and extent of microstructural order can vary from material to material (i.e., edge-to-basal plane ratio), which has important implications for the electron-transfer kinetics of a given redox analyte ( The electrochemical performance of these materials has been studied in detail over the past three decades, and much has been learned about the structure-reactivity relationship ( ). The use of synthetic conductive and semiconductive diamond thin films in electrochemistry has only recently been reported ( ). However, the relationship between the physical, chemical, and electronic properties of diamond and its electrochemical performance is not well understood and is the subject of much recent interest.
