Product Description
Already well-established in the fields of fashion, journalistic, and portrait photography in his native Berlin, Bernd Obermann moved to New York City in 1996 to experience the city’s vibrant mix of culture, ethnicity, and race. For the next five years he ventured out of his apartment nearly every day, camera in hand, to explore what New York had to offer. The results of these walks through city streets, parks, and neighborhoods are collected in this paean to a place whose energy and spirit are as palpable as they are memorable. "When I take a photograph of somebody I am also making a photo of a deeper level of myself." Says Obermann, "I believe in acceptance and not in analysis." From the Bronx to the Battery, from poor to rich, young to old, Obermann’s images reflect his own fascination and sense of discovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stirring Photos, Powerful Introduction
I met Bernd at a German bar on the Lower East Side last October and crossed paths with him again on New Year's Eve. Until then, I knew Bernd only as the man who borrowed my cheap digital camera to shoot some shots for his scrapbook. The shots were OK, nothing special, so I was absolutely blown away when I saw what he did professionally. He gave me a copy of this book on New Year's Eve, and I have since sent copies to a dozen friends around the country and overseas. Technically, the photographs are superb -- uncanny in their use of natural lighting, deep shadows and perspective. But what makes these black-and-whites of New York and New Yorkers so memorable is that the sum is greater than the parts. Bernd's camera leads us past New York's magnificence and its squalor, but deposits us home again with wondrous, renewed pride in our city's ability time-and-again to spawn change and diversity, and to make the most of adversity. I think it is fitting that it took an outsider, a kindly German photographer with a penchant for wild Beethoven-like hair, to present New York the way it is. ... Read more

This so called "book" is nothing more than anything you can findin the sports pages of the newspapers. It is nothing more than a pamphletwith a hard cover! It is so flat that you can slip it under the door ofyour home and still have daylight showing above it. As for"inside"information., there is none. Save your money and yourtime. You can read the whole thing during a commercial of a televised game.BEWARE you have been warned! ... Read more

Product Description
It's hard to imagine eight million people trying to avoid dog refuse on the streets of New York City on a daily basis. It's harder not to imagine New Yorkers from all walks of life picking up after their canines. Using plastic bags or trendy, mechanized devices, pet owners have become a unified force in cleaning up the sidewalks of the Big Apple. We forget that Health Law 1310, which went into effect in 1978, was the first such legislation to work in a major city, and that the strange custom of scooping in New York continues to influence communities around the world. Not long ago, picking up after your Poodle, Puli, or Pekinese was not a basic civic duty. Initially, many politicians thought the idea was absurd. Animal rights activists were unanimously opposed. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals condemned the proposed legislation because it would impose undue hardship on dog owners. New York's Poop Scoop Law chronicles the integration of dog owners, a much-maligned subculture, into mainstream society by tracing the history of the legislation that New York's City Council shelved twice before Mayor Ed Koch was forced to go to the state level for support. Brandow shows how a combination of science and politics, fact and fear, altruism and self-interest led to the adoption and enforcement of legislation that became a shining success. ... Read more

This is a GREAT read!Anyone who appreciates political intrigue, especially NYC-70s-style, will love this -- dog owners or not. It paints a fascinating picture of the time, the ins and outs of public policy, peppered with a Dickensian cast of characters.Who knew poop could be so captivating??

Traditional travelers visit a place to fulfillexpectations. Others, though, travel in search of the unknown, toexperience "the shock of the new," to be transformed by theexperience.

In the deep, dark 1980s, James Crotty and Michael Lane quit theirjobs, traded everything they owned for a used 26-foot mobile home, andhit the road.Their mission: to report on the incredible people, places, and parking lots they encountered along the way. The firstfruit of their labor was Monk: The Mobile Magazine, published fromtheir dashboard and documenting in all its warts and weirdnesswhatever city or town they'd rolled into that month.

Now, the Monks give their own twist on the traditional guidebook withThe Mad Monks' Guide to New York City, an exploration of what's trulyunique, honest, and valuable in the city that never sleeps. Withreviews of the most Monkish hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, events, music, performances, stores, and more- -and featuring interviews withQuentin Crisp, Annie Sprinkle, the Reverend Calvin Butts, officialcity clock winder Marvin Schneider, and 18 other quintessential NewYorkers--Monks' NYC is the essential guide to New York's creativeheart. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CD Rom version is the best!
Funny, irreverant and witty ....took me to placesI never would have discovered . . . .what a mind expanding trip without drugs!BRAVO.

5-0 out of 5 stars GENIUS, GENIUS, GENIUS!
Here I am, spitting and cussing and followed by my tribe of beautiful wife, giggling baby, manic dog, neurotic cat, tiny overpriced one-bedroom apartment in Manhattan, thirty-two South Bronx homeroom students,anti-situationist buddies in the Yale Art History Graduate School, coffeeshop aficionados, strange relatives, no money, one as yet unfinished greatAmerican novel, an entire collection of badly washed decaying old collegeclothes, and, last but not least, one pristine, mint, delectable copy of"The Mad Monks' Guide to New York City."Genius! Genius! Genius!

But who are these morons who keep giving the Monks the clichedcomparisons to Kerouac and Kuralt? Where are the comparisons to the greats? As convoluted, descriptive, and gratuitous as a Faulkner sentence! Asminutely involved as Wolf! As sharp and evocative as Hemmingway! As full oflife and extraterrestialy wise as Salinger! As innovatively plotted asJoyce! As romantic as Austin! As poetic and erotic as Shakespeare!

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures "the soul of the city"
The Mad Monks' Guide to New York City avoids dwelling on well-worn landmarks such as the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty, focusing more on the eccentric and offbeat, such as Miss Vera's Finishing School forBoys Who Want to Be Girls, Fly Fishing in Central and even Toxic Tourism like Staten Island'sFresh Kills Dump, the world's largest dump/landfill.

Along with the sublime and the bizarre is a cornucopia of the greatcity's diverse culture, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spots, making it probably as useful for those who live in the city as for thoseplanning to visit it.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST SINCE WASHINGTON IRVING
The Mad Monks' Guide to New York City is definitely the best thing I've read on that place in years, maybe the best book on New York since Washington Irving.

5-0 out of 5 stars More travelogue than travel guide
Although I think I'll have to buy another NYC travel book in order to get more detailed information about places to stay and to eat, I really enjoyed reading this. It's full of interviews with interesting New Yorkers, likeWigstock's Lady Bunny and the guy who runs the sideshows at Coney Island. There's a great section on NYC neighborhoods as well. The charmingpersonality of the Mad Monks really comes through in their writing--youlearn a lot about what they don't like (yuppies, sterile architecture, theDisneyfication of Times Square) as well as a few things about what they do(drag queens, egg creams, and Rudy Giuliani, strangely enough). ... Product Description
Maximum City is the biography of New York City. It has an exact purpose: to use the past to understand how New York came to be its glorious, dangerous self. From the first struggling settlers to the glitz of Nouvellle Society, it tells how the myth of New York was formed, and the calamities and realities that underlie all the headline assumptions about the city: Corruption, Excess, Glory, Danger and the sensuality which brings its bleak streets to life. But it also asks why - why cramped Manhattan should be high society's city; why such a metropolis fell into the hands of mobsters and con-men; why travellers always go in fear of its startling streets; why anyone who wanted success, a new life, even a new sex, had to come to Maximum City. It is full of the voices of New Yorkers, past and present, drawn from the newly available archives and direct reporting, as well as from letters, diaries, movies, maps and archaeologists' finds. ...
