Product Description
Situated halfway between the Broad and Catawba Rivers in upstate South Carolina, the area of present-day York was inhabited by Native Americans for several thousand years before immigrants from the British Isles arrived in the late 1740s. When the American Revolution began, York’s early settlers almost overwhelmingly supported independence, and two important Patriot victories—the Battles of Williamson’s Plantation (Huck’s Defeat) and Kings Mountain—were fought nearby in 1780. York County was established in 1785, and the town of Yorkville became the county seat. Agriculture made up much of the town’s economy in the 19th century, and the Kings Mountain Railroad sparked economic growth after 1852. The Kings Mountain Military School opened in 1855 and made Yorkville an educational center for the upcountry. Yorkville’s cotton planters and slave owners supported the Confederacy during the Civil War, and the town was occupied by Federal troops during Reconstruction. Yorkville became York in the early 20th century, and textile manufacturing became its dominant industry. With the decline of the textile industry after 1980, the city has become a center for business, tourism, and high-tech manufacturing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Lost" Regiment Revived
"...traces the progress of the 154th New York Infantry Volunteers from the regiment's organization in 1862 in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties to the mustering out in 1865."

"...the 154th New York participated in some of the great campaigns and battles of the war. At Chancellorsville, the regiment's stand against Stonewall Jackson's famous attack made its first battle a disastrous and bloody one. At Gettysburg, a similar forlorn fight decimated the regiment further. But the remaining soldiers continued to fight and suffer in the subsequent campaigns for Chattanooga and Atlanta and participated in General Sherman's destructive march through Georgia and the Carolinas."

By the 1960's, the stories of the 154th were forgotten. The soldiers of this unit live again "through the several diaries and accounts and the hundreds of letters located by the authors during years of research."

With brief biographical sketches. Hardback with dustjacket, 211 pp, 124 b&w illustrations, 13 maps, Bibliography, Index.

Product Description
Gracie Mansion has been the official residence of New York's mayors since 1942. This exquisite political showcase is where visiting dignitaries occupy rooms once familiar to Alexander Hamilton, Washington Irving, and John Quincy Adams. Lavishly illustrated with 150 images, including paintings and watercolors, menus and maps, invitations and elevations-and enhanced by domestic memories from Ed Koch, Mary Lindsay, and other former tenants-the book documents over 200 years of colorful life in this historic house. Through designers' sketches and before-and-after photos, the book explores the changing interior, from original furnishings to the individual tastes of many mayoral first ladies, and the splendid restoration of 2002.

Written with the full cooperation of the Gracie Mansion Conservancy, this is the first anecdotal history of the house, its gardens and ghosts, and the mayors who have lived there, from Fiorello La Guardia to Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book About A New York Gem
Ellen Stern's "biography" of Gracie Mansion is simply tremendous. It traces the history of New York City's Mayoral Mansion from its beginning as a merchant's country house, through several owners, years of benign neglect after NYC acquired it to it's conversion into the Mayor's Mansion.

Ms. Stern tells the story of each family that has lived there starting with Fiorella LaGuardia through the current Mayor, Mike Bloomberg who uses Gracie Mansion only for entertaining.

The book is lavishly illustrated with wonderful color pictures as well as clever pen & ink caricatures of each of the mansion's mayors by Al Hirshfeld and Peter Stern.

This is a great book for anyone interested in the history of New York City, it's mayors and the many colorful personalities that have crossed Gracie Mansion's threshold. ... Read more

    Product Description

Not since Samuel Beckett has a writer of Michael Brodskey's caliber made an appearance. Acknowledged as one of the most original and substantial writers America has produced in this century, Michael Brodskey's dark style is in defiant contrast to prevalent trends in contemporary writing. His English is not "proper;" his sentences are not smooth or pretty. Like no other writer of his generation, Brodsky weaves a dense tapestry of words that completely envelopes the reader. In 'Xman" Brodskey has created a unique and timely parable, the story of an anonymous hero who seeks a meaning, and meaning, to his life. As Xman slumps from job interview to job interview, job to job, he gradually comes to realize that there is no place for him in this or any society, and he resolves to destroy what he cannot accept or be accepted by.

    71. The Bookmaker: A Memoir of Money, Luck, and Family from the Utopian Outskirts of New York City

    Product Description

Marking the debut of a gifted new writer, The Bookmaker teems with humanity, empathy, humor, and insight.

At the heart of Michael J. Agovino's powerful, layered memoir is his family's struggle for success in 1970s, '80s, and '90s New York City—and his father's gambling, which brought them to exhilarating highs and crushing lows. He vividly brings to life the Bronx, a place of texture and nuance, of resignation but also of triumph.

The son of a buttoned-up union man who moonlighted as a gentleman bookmaker and gambler, Agovino grew up in the Bronx's Co-op City, the largest and most ambitious state-sponsored housing development in U.S. history. When it opened, it landed on the front page of The New York Times and in Time magazine, which described it as "relentlessly ugly."

Agovino's Italian American father was determined not to let his modest income and lack of a college education define him, and was dogged in his pursuit of the finer things in life. When the point spreads were on his side, he brought his family to places he only dreamed about in his favorite books and films: the Uffizi, the Tate, the Rijksmuseum; St. Peter's, Chartres, Teotihuacán. With bad luck came shouting matches, unpaid bills, and eviction notices.

The Bookmaker is both a bold, loving portrait of a family and their metropolis and an intimate look into some of the most turbulent decades of New York City. In elegant and soaring prose, it transcends the personal to illuminate the ways in which class distinctions shaped America in the last half of the twentieth century.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
After hearing an interiview with the author, I was eager to read this memoir. Unfortunately, the interview was much more interesting than the book. In this book the author talks of a time when he was relating part of his life story to a friend and the friend suggested that he write a book about it. As oral history it probably worked. As a written account, however, it's a series of flat recolletions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book, love this family
This memoir is at once delightful and poignant, which is, come to think of it, appropriate for accounts of most anyone's life.I found myself easily loving the narrator and his family, complete with their undeniable (but endearing) weaknesses. And the details of the Bronx setting are rich, evocative and colorful.Overall, it was absolutely refreshing and effective as a memoir.Other such "growing up urban" autobiographies (e.g., Dalton Cromley's HONKY) are lacking in warmth, somehow.Agovino's work is actually full of love and leaves the reader feeling inspired. As a writer, too, Agovino is exceptionally talented, and -- as another reviewer pointed out -- his story reads like a novel.I look forward to reading more of his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story about Co-Op City!
I've driven past Co-Op City on I-95. I always wondered what it was like in there. It seems like a mystery. When I saw the cover of the book, I recognized those big, depressing buildings and wanted to read it. The author of the book does a very good job of bringing his neighborhood to life. He doesn't live there now ( I don't think) but grew up there and lived there for a long time. It's not about how he had a horrible childhood. It sounded like he had a good childhood and played a lot of sports with the neighborhood kids. I always thought it was a place for poor people but now I see it is much more than that. The writer Agovino makes it a very three-dimensional place. His father liked it but his mother hated it. Not all bad, not all good like Robert Moses and politicians expected it to be. There's a lot of "gray" area. It's a well-written book about this guy and his family. Lots of good stories, and non-sterotypical characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A genuine accomplishment
With so many memoirs out there, it's hard to imagine a fresh or enlivening take on the genre. But in "The Bookmaker" Michael Agovino bring searing honesty and a novelist's observational powers to the telling of his family's story. The characters are so rich and complex, and the storyline so riveting, that in fact, I felt like I was reading a literary novel. That the story is true makes it all the more compelling. I felt like I grew to
truly know these people, and to care deeply about what happened to them. "The Bookmaker" is funny, moving, intense, sad, and, ultimately, redemptive. Agovino has
written an amazing story that many people will relate to, even if they're not Italian-Americans, New Yorkers, of the sons of bookies. A genuine achievement!

2-0 out of 5 stars Uncontrolled Autobiography
The book was just OK.It was a slow read and difficult to get to know the characters. He refers to Louie I and Louie II and Louie III.It gets confusing keeping track of his Dad, his Grandfather and their friends; much less his friends.I thought that there was too much editorializing (he uses italics when he does this). Thus, he jumps around. While in a chapter in 1986, for example, he will jump back and spend several pages talking about 1977.

I finished the book - actually forced myself to do so.I would not recommend it to anyone to read. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

    Product Description
Subway City explores New York's transit system as both fact and metaphor. Brooks traces the development of the subway from its inception as the newest and most efficient public transportation system to its decline as an overcrowded and dangerous part of city life. The crowded cars gave Harold Lloyd material for comedy, fueled William Randolph Hearst's crusade against the Traction Trust, and convinced Lewis Mumford that improved transit was a futile means of solving the city's problems. Brooks explores films which have dramatized the dangers lurking below ground, and examines the infamous Bernhard Goetz shooting that made the subway a symbol of urban malaise. More hopefully, he describes the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's station improvements and ambitious programs for Music Underground, Poetry-in-Transit, and Arts-in-Transit, as keys to the city's renewal. Brooks probes the image of the subway in the work of such artistic and literary figures as Reginald Marsh, John Dos Passos, Hart Crane, Walker Evans, Tom Wolfe, Saul Bellow, Red Grooms, and Keith Haring. He uses the work of Isabel Bishop, Betty Smith, Minna Citron, and Donna Dennis to show how women have experienced the subway. And he shows how Langston Hughes, Ann Petry, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, and LeRoi Jones have used the subway to explore the city's racial tensions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ya Gotta Believe Its Another Mets Book
This book was an average read as far as accounts of the history of the New York Mets go.Admittedly, I have been spoiled by some excellent ones recently, but this book just did not meet the standard to me.

The best parts of the book are the trivia questions and the brief biographies of key Mets players. The rest of the book contained numerous errors in grammar and spelling (I know, the fault of the editor, not the author). There were also several factual errors and contradictions, as well as some awkward writing. What bothered me the most were the holes in the story where it seemed like whole chunks had been left out.Several of the accounts of individual games left out key plays or developments. It read like the author was unfamiliar with the team and was writing it from reading newspaper accounts only.

Overall, a quick and somewhat entertaining read, but with some faults. If you can pick it up cheap, it might be worth it to a collector of Mets memorabilia. At least stump your friends with the trivia. ... Read more
