4-0 out of 5 stars Good Facts
When Oprah Winfrey was born, nobody knew that she was going to change the world. Winfrey was just a baby when her un-wanting mother left Oprah at her grandparents' farm to be raised under their harsh rules. Growing up, Winfrey was very gifted. She could read books before enrolled in Kindergarten, and skipped so many grades, she lost count. Although her school life was pretty easy, it wasn't the same way back on the farm. When Winfrey was just in elementary school, she had to go in the woods and pick out a stick to be beaten with. Her grandparents of coarse meant well, but were very strict with their rules. They always taught Oprah to follow her dreams, and that's exactly what she did.
When Oprah was a preteen, she was sent to live with her mother in an inner-city apartment. Life was a lot different there, and Winfrey made some pretty bad decisions as a teenager. When Winfrey was just 14, she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl, this was just one of the many attention-grabbing facts that the book included. She was stealing money from her mother's purse, and sneaking out. Her mother really didn't spend time with Oprah or have a good relationship with her, so she sent her to live with her father. Winfrey's father was remarried to a motherly woman, who treated Winfrey like her own. Oprah's parents were very young, because her mother and father were just 16 when she was born. Her father had a much better relationship with Oprah than her mother did, so he father and her step-mother raised Oprah well. According to the book, Winfrey's father was supportive of anything she did. Pretty soon, Oprah got a job working for a radio, hosting her own morning show. Winfrey was only 17, and was considered "a fresh start to the morning." This part of the book really helped understand how her career started. As more and more people tuned in to her show, she received many job offers and not just on the radio, some were on television. Oprah took a job working as a news anchor and reporter in Baltimore. Unfortunately, she was overweight, and criticized for it. After a news report, she would go and eat at any local cafeteria. Very few people on television were overweight, but she had such phenomenal talent that they overlooked that. Soon after that, Winfrey took a job in Chicago co-hosting a talk show. She was loved all over, and took over the show later on. At this point, Oprah was making millions and was able to buy anything she wanted. Oprah is known all over, and today she is the most popular thing on television.
Oprah Winfrey by Sherry Beck Paprocki was a very enjoyable read. The book gave some interesting details on the life of Oprah Winfrey. The facts were amazing, the book itself was smooth and very educational. If people are looking for a biography with some attention-grabbing information, this is the book for you. From her childhood to her present life, this book has it all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oprah Winfrey (People in the News)
This is a very interesting review of Oprah Winfrey. It sums up her whole life to date.It is always more interesting to read an AutoBiography which is written by the person themselves, but this book gives a very good open look at Oprah personally and the way she operates her life and her business, but most importantly just what an amazing business woman Oprah really is.She is the real reason for her own success.I'm sure there will be an autobiography after she retires (if she ever does) and I'm sure that will be a winning autobiography. However, this book is well written, full of information as to how difficult it is to produce a tv show and star in it as well. I am very happy that I purchased the book.I've shared the book with others and they all loved the book!Janet ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Journal!
I absolutely love this journal. It helped me to lose over 30 pounds because I was able to keep track of intake of fruits, veggies, water and weekly weight which allowed me to set new goals for myself each day.Being able to journal my feelings daily also helped tremendously.Even if you don't use the Making the Connections plan this is a great way to keep track of your progress. - Lina Yerke, MI

5-0 out of 5 stars A journal of daily renewal
This is by far the best work-out journal I have ever used.I love the ease of just checking off how many fruits and veggies you have had for the day or glasses of water you have consumed. You do not have to wtrite everything out. It really is layed out well.At the end of the week it gives you a spot to reflect back on the week.Plenty of room for to write out all your thoughts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make The Connection Companion Journal
I have been using this journal for 9 years and it is awesome! It contains ample room for your daily entries, water and food intake.

The only bummer is that it is out of print and very hard to find. However, Amazon.com has it available through Marketplace vendors. I have ordered several copies thru this service and have been very pleased with the journals.

I have tried serveral journals and this is by far the best. I highly recommend it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to keep making the connection
When I first bought the journal in 1996, when the program first came out, I put it on a shelf and let it collect dust for six months than I started Oprah's program. What made me stay on the excerise/eating right program wasthis journal I had to put everything I ate, felt, did down on paper. Sometimes that is the hardest part. The important thing I found out is that when you put your feelings down on paper, you can detect a pattern to why you are not succeding in losing weight. Because of Oprah's journal, I was able to see what I was doing wrong and correct it. I now years later review my first journal to keep giving me inspiration to continue on the right track. This journal simplify's the process outlined in Oprah's book by making it easy to check off how much water you drank and check off the fruits you ate, it enables you to see how much more you have to consume for the day to stay on the plan, there is also lots of room to discuss how much excerise you did, and how you felt about it. This journal helped me stay on Oprah's plan to lose weight, it is well worth the purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to journal
If you are a person that likes to do the journaling thing, this book is for you. Each day is set up with two pages, one that you can write your thoughts. This particular page is great as it gives you an inspirational quote every day.The other page is the one where you get to note how much water you drank, the fruits and veggies you ate.You also get to enter in some info about exercise that you did and more. Some of us can do things better if we put them down on paper. If this is your style, this is a great book for you. ... Product Description
This is a biography of actress and TV talk-show host Oprah Winfrey. "Penguin Readers" is a series of simplified novels, film novelizations and original titles that introduce students at all levels to the pleasures of reading in English. Originally designed for teaching English as a foreign language, the series' combination of high interest level and low reading age makes it suitable for both English-speaking teenagers with limited reading skills and students of English as a second language. Many titles in the series also provide access to the pre-20th century literature strands of the National Curriculum English Orders. "Penguin Readers" are graded at seven levels of difficulty, from "Easystarts" with a 200-word vocabulary, to Level 6 (Advanced) with a 3000-word vocabulary. In addition, titles fall into one of three sub-categories: "Contemporary", "Classics" or "Originals". At the end of each book there is a section of enjoyable exercises focusing on vocabulary building, comprehension, discussion and writing. Some titles in the series are available with an accompanying audio cassette, or in a book and cassette pack.Additionally, selected titles have free accompanying "Penguin Readers Factsheets" which provide stimulating exercise material for students, as well as suggestions for teachers on how to exploit the Readers in class. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Oprah Winfrey:Talk Show Legend
Oprah Winfrey is a subject with whom the author appears to feel well acquainted. The tone of the book almost suggests that they could be good friends, although that is not stated. The author includes sevenpages of sources arranged as chapter notes. This section is at the end ofthe book, and does not interfere with the story. These sources includevideos, television interviews, magazine articles, personal interviews andInternet sites.Photographs are also included to validate the accuracy ofsome of the information about setting and character, such as Oprah'sfather's barbershop and home, the church and highschool she attended, herChicago studio, and numerous photographs of Oprah in her various roles. The author has developed a central theme about Oprah's character:Oprahwants to use her influence to make a difference in the lives of people. She documents the many instances in which Oprah has done that by fundingscholarships to promote education, recommending good reading to furtherliteracy, and getting people involved in the lives of underprivilegedchildren. According to Wooten, things did not just happen to Oprah. Oprah has taken control of her life in countless ways. She finished herdegree, accepted every opportunity to further her career, bought her ownstudio, and got involved in many community projects to further theinterests of others. The use of language was appropriate to thehistorical period and literary style of the book. There was more thanadequate information showing what Oprah's contemporaries thought about her. Phil Donahue's remarks about Oprah are recorded along with those of otherprofessional people as well as the thoughts of some of Oprah's employees. This work escapes an adulatory tone by showing Oprah's mistakes andshortcomings; however, in spite of that, Wooten makes Oprah sound like apretty terrific person. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Emulating a more positive ideal for young women!
This concise (128 pages) biography could be an inspiring read for teen age and older young women. Indicating that from humble beginnings and trying early circumstances, it is possible to dream a dream and achieve hearts' desire by engaging seriously, having enthusiasm and courage, and of course - always an element of luck!

Raised by Grandmother Hattie Mae on a rural farm in the deep south, she was dearly loved though she was sometimes whipped with a switch so discipline could be maintained. Oprah says she could trace many of her solid character traits to formative years on the Mississippi farm. She reflects, I am what I am today because of my grandmother- my strength, my sense of reasoning, everything, all of that, was set by the time I was six years old."

In her earliest years there was a serious lack of money and only necessities which could be grown on the farm or made at home were available. Even so, she started learning to read by age three and this desire to learn through reading is with Oprah all her life and provides the rungs upon which she climbs the ladder to fulfill her desire for success.

When Oprah was eight, her father Vernon took her to live in Tennessee and helped guide her through her teen years. He helped channel her talents and boundless creative energies with reasonable discipline, consistency, structure, unwavering standards and love. A most important message in this background material is that these standards insisted upon by grandmother and father were the factors which enabled Oprah to lead such a meaningful life. All our children would greatly benefit from such attention by their caregivers, to these behavioral qualities which would enhance their lives.

Oprah grew up performing at home, school and church, ever willing and creative. Her energy, fun and naturalness gave her the possibilities to win pageants - be hired as a radio announcer while still attending high school. Upward and onward to Television co-anchor, then her own show, film performances of exceptional quality, and no end in sight as one of Americas most successful and highly regarded entrepreneurs.

I recommend this easy to read little book as an antidote to the influences of those of today's' "idols" who engage in flamboyantly detrimental activities, and are set up as role models by our impressionable youth.

Let our young women read about and emulate a more positive ideal! ... Read more

Excerpt: David Barksdale (1947 1974), also known as King David, was the original leader of the Chicago-based street gang the Black Disciples. Born Donise David Barksdale on May 24, 1947 in Sallis, Mississippi to parents Virginia and Charlie in a family of thirteen children, he moved with his family to Chicago in 1957. Within three years Barksdale had become a notorious gang leader. By 1966, Barksdale's gang absorbed several others and became known as the Black Disciple Nation. Tensions grew between the Black Disciples and other gangs such as the Black Stone Rangers. In 1968 the leader of the Black Stone Rangers, Eugene Hairston, ordered a hit on King David. David was shot six times while exiting a bar one night, but survived and continued running the gang, while Hairston was sent to prison for trying to organize his murder. David eventually grew sick of the bloodshed and proposed a merger with Larry Hoover, leader of the Gangster Disciples in 1969. Hoover accepted and the Black Gangster Disciple Nation was born. On September 2, 1974 Barksdale died from kidney failure as a result of the 1968 attack. He was survived by his three children and wife Yvonne Barksdale, until her murder three years later Over the course of his life Barksdale was arrested 25 times, but never convicted of any serious offense. On several occasions when he was arrested he used the alias "David Jones". He is still revered by the Black Disciples and every year there is a birthday celebration in his honor.
