1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Researched & Written
I was very eager to read this book, "Bruce Willis: The Unauthorized Biography" by John Parker as I am a big Bruce Willis fan and wish to learn all I can about this fascinating and talented actor. However this book did not tell me anything that I did not already know. Instead, it just rehashed the plots of his movies and TV appearances and included slapjack commentary by the author.

The book is a total of 250 pages long and was published in 1997 (the actual "story" only goes up to the summer of '96 though) and this was published in the UK by Virgin Books. There aren't any in-depth or exclusive interviews nor did the author do any prior research.

The only thing I like about the book is the cover, a nice pic of Bruce.

I get the feeling that Mr. Parker relied mostly on "news reports" (i.e. 20 year-old magazine articles) to piece this book together which just came off as sloppy and shoddy because there were numerous inaccuracies and grammatical errors. And he even got the plots of some of Bruce's most well-known movies wrong which makes me question Mr. Parker's motives in writing this foolishness.

The book also takes a ton of dips and discuses the movie plots of Demi Moore as well as the movies and careers of several other Hollywood actors (past, present and current). What does this have to do with Bruce Willis's biography? Not a thing!!! It should not have found a home in Bruce's book, yet I suppose journalistic integrity has very little to do with making a quick buck.

The author also writes about Bruce Willis's hometown in NJ as if it were some flyover Midwestern state that no one has ever heard of. Again, no references to back up these claims were provided because not a lick of research was conducted.

The pictures provided (a few black and white ones) go perfectly with the text: boring, old, low-quality and incredibly unoriginal. There are even pictures of Demi Moore (again, what does this have to do with Bruce Willis's biography??) thrown in, no doubt for pointless filler.

The sad thing is, "Bruce Willis: The Unauthorized Biography" is the only Bruce Willis biography to date. Perhaps the author knew this and simply did not wish to put any extra effort into this project. Shame on him for such a lazy and lackluster job. Bruce deserves better. One day I hope there will be a comprehensive book about him (he sure deserves it), but in the meantime stay away from this one as it's was a huge waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Willis

With the hilarious “instant cult classic” Seagalogy:A Study of the Ass-Kicking Films of Steven Seagal, Vern wrote a book that shook thevery foundations of film criticism, broke their wrists, and then threw them througha window. Now he’s back, and this time he’s got all of ‘the films of badass cinema’in his sights...

From Die Hard to The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie, Transformers to Mary Poppins, Vern has an opinion on everything, and he’s not shy about sharingthem... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vern is a Genius
Seagalogy was wonderful and so is this. Vern's unique perspective gives me the sense that just by reading his reviews I am participating in a special world where action is king and the hero always kicks ass.

Vern's own declaration of badass intent is inscribed right there on page one:

"WHO'S SEEN DIE HARD?

anybody? --vern"

And, just like that, he roundhoused his way into film-writing history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, irreverent, and sometimes surprisingly thoughtful movie reviews
Yippee Ki-Yay Moviegoer isn't so much a book about Bruce Willis as it is a collection of Vern's reviews from years past, but aside from the slightly misleading title (it does say "And Other Important Topics"), I really enjoyed the heck out of this book. Vern's reviews and rants are funny, irreverent at times, reverent at other times (or at the same time), and are often surprisingly insightful.

I love pop culture. Back in the ivory tower of academia, I tried my hardest to work in pop culture whenever I could, and I was lucky enough to have a department that was very openminded about that sort of thing. My film studies professor would grumble about my choices of films in his classes, but by god, I wanted to talk about Serenity and Sleepy Hollow and the first two X-Men movies.

So I read Vern's reviews with that unfortunately tendency of recent grad students to pick them apart. To my surprise, the vast majority of them passed my film geek litmus test. His rant about Michael Bay's Transformers was not only hilarious in its righteous indignation but also very, very true. Vern makes solid arguments about why Bay's quick-cut-can't-tell-what-you're-looking-at directing style is crap and why Hollywood shouldn't go down that path when it comes to action. I'll admit that I often enjoy movies that don't require any kind of brain-engagement, but Vern makes a damn good point. Summer blockbuster does not equal stupid movie with explosions, and it's time for moviegoers to stop buying into that idea. Let's get back to smart action films like Die Hard and Aliens.

If you're a stickler for proper grammar and spelling, you might need to take a valium before reading this book. Vern's writing style is not terribly polished, and he often misspells characters' names (reading Hans Solo made something inside of me shrivel up and die), but at the same time, that style is part of his charm. He doesn't give a crap if his reviews pass muster with a picky writer like me. He just wants to talk about movies, dang it.

And talk he does. One of my favorite reviews is for They Live, a movie I've never actually seen but have heard of. Specifically, I've watched the five minute long fight scene in the alley, the whole purpose of which was for our mulleted hero to get his buddy to put on a pair of glasses so he could see the aliens. My friends and I watched that scene and laughed at it. But Vern's review made me actually want to watch the whole thing to see if his point about the movie's representation of the Reagan-era US is right. Whether it is or not, it's definitely a thoughtful review of a movie most people wouldn't even bother watching.

I think that's the thing I appreciate most about this book. The majority of the movies he reviews are ones that people don't take seriously. They're action films and horror films and what have you, and many people think those aren't worth talking about. I'm of a mind, though, that pretty much everything our culture produces is worth looking at and talking about (which is probably why I liked grad school so much, hehe), and so it was really great to be both enlightened and entertained by Vern's reviews. Good stuff.

2-0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity.
A step down from the Authors freshman book, Seagalogy. This book is sorta all over the place.Only the last small section is about Bruce Willis. The rest is full of rambling reviews of a mish-mash of different films. Some action, some not.I expected to read a book like Seagalogy but about Bruce Willis.

You get the sense that the book is a printout of a bunch of his movie reviews from aintitcool.com that were bound into a book and titled with a hip cover.

Sadly, as an action film fan. This book is a missed opportunity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yippee Ki-Yay indeed.

Vern is one of the few writers out there who approaches popular movies with the same kind of enthusiasm and attention that highbrow critics lavish on "important" films. He makes reading about action films almost as much fun as watching them. I'm only halfway through Yippee Ki-Yay Moviegoer, and I can't wait to get down to my local (independently owned) video store so that I can catch up on some classics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader
A reasonable collection of fantasy, with a 3.55 average. The best stories being Garth Nix's very funny and clever giant monster short, and Laird Barron's horror piece.

There is a quite brief piece by the editors about the state and source of stories in general, and each individual tale is prefaced with further info.

A solid 4, this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Bizarre and beautiful
YEAR'S BEST FANTASY 6, edited by David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer, is an engaging anthology of the absurd, the fantastic, the beautiful, and the horrifying, comprising twenty-three stories written by some of the best in the industry. The tales range from light and whimsical, as in "Still Life with Boobs" by Anne Harris, to dark and chilling, as in Laird Barron's much-acclaimed novella, "The Imago Sequence," which has been nominated for the World Fantasy Award in the long fiction category for 2005.

The book comes in with a tiger in Yoon Ha Lee's elegant parable "Eating Hearts," and goes out with a tiger, in Connie Willis's smartly crafted homage to H. L. Mencken entitled "Inside Job." Kelly Link's outstanding "Monster" is a tongue-in-cheek modern-day version of Beowulf in a boys' summer camp; and Bruce Sterling's satirical "The Denial" brings to mind the genius of Isaac B. Singer. Authors include Esther M. Friesner, Neil Gaiman, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Jeff VanderMeer, Patrick Samphire, Gene Wolfe, Delia Sherman, Tim Pratt and Greg van Eekhout, Gavin J. Grant (husband to Kelly Link), Candas Jane Dorsey, Timothy J. Anderson, Claude Lalumière, Deborah Coates, Heather Shaw, Garth Nix, Jonathon Sullivan, and Liz Williams.

Award recipient David G. Hartwell is the senior editor at Tor/Forge Books, the publisher of THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF SCIENCE FICTION, and the author of AGE OF WONDERS.

World Fantasy Award winner Kathryn Cramer is an editor at THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF SCIENCE FICTION. She has also co-edited the outstanding anthologies, THE ASCENT OF WONDER, THE HARD SF RENAISSANCE, and the YEAR'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION series.

YEAR'S BEST FANTASY 6 is highly recommended reading for anyone who enjoys variety in the fantastic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Low Quality and Outdated
I am an AP Physics teacher and the majority of my students earn a 4 or 5 on the exam.I have examined all of the major test prep guides, and Kaplan's offering is the lowest quality by far.The review material is not organized efficiently by any stretch of the imagination. They pack in a lot of extra information which is simply not necessary to passing the test and the presentation is overwhleming to your typical student.A review guide is supposed to be just that; review. You do not need complicated derivations in a book like this, that is what textbooks are for.

The worst critque I have, though, is that it is simply out of date.I thought that at the least I could use the example free response problems in the back of the book.A few of them were good, but the majority were poorly written and did not accurately reflect the style of questions as written by the College Board.Even worse, there was a free response question in the book covered material which was removed from the test in 2002.I don't understand how a book that claims to be the 2009 edition can have material that is seven years out of date, but there you have it.

My advice is to buy the 5 steps to a 5 Physics book; it is the strongest of the guides I have reviewed and the one I require my students to use.Even the other guides out there are also much better than Kaplan, though. The best advice I have for any student taking the exam is to go to the College Board website and download the free response questions from the past ten years along with their answers- that is the best possible practice you can get for the actual exam! ...
