Product Description
Fonts. They seem to have a life of their own. And they can cause no end of heartache to the harried desktop or webtop publisher. Perfectly lovely documents on screen can suddenly transmogrify into a perfect nightmare when printed. So how can you control these willful beasts? Get a copy of this book and end your power struggle with fonts forever.

How To Boss Your Fonts Around has been completely revised and updated for the Second Edition. It's a must-have primer on font technology and font management for anyone who works on a Macintosh. It's updated for Mac OS 8, and includes all new coverage of how to work with and manage fonts for the Web. You'll learn to identify and work with all the different kinds of fonts available, from PostScript to TrueType to Type 1, bitmapped to screen, outline to printer, resident to downloadable and more. There's coverage of Adobe Type Manager, ATM Deluxe, Suitcase, Master Juggler, Font Reserve, new font management tools and utilities, installing fonts, and solving font conflicts. A detailed reference section answers common questions and problems, tells you how to acquire fonts, and offers an amazingly detailed glossary. This is the essential troubleshooting guide to taking control of fonts and learning to use them efficiently and effectively.Amazon.com Review
Fonts can make or break a layout, and good designers know it. Knowing what a bitmapped font is might not seem like a big deal...until you go to print it. The author, Robin Williams, explains how a font that is bitmapped will have very different results on a printer than one that is not. How to Boss Your Fonts Around will also show you the merits of investing your time in organizing your fonts through a font manager.

In a day when there are now "Beat Generation" fonts for the Mac, good font use and management is essential. Williams, Mac expert and the author of bestsellers such as The Non-Designer's Design Book and The Little Mac Book, goes into great detail on the origin and creation of great fonts. Did you ever wonder why so many fonts are named after big cities (such as New York and Geneva)? Turns out, they're all in the same font family, and knowing the characteristics of that grouping will enhance how you use them. Williams provides a full glossary of terms, and the book is rich with visual examples. She treats fonts as the tools they are, showing the reader all the necessary care and maintenance to allow for great design and for the text to shine through. --Jennifer Buckendorff ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mac-Oriented Book
Although the Amazon editorial review calls Williams a Mac expert, it doesn't make clear that this book is pretty exclusively Mac-oriented.Some of it will be useful to Windows users, but there are surely other, similar font books on the market more useful for Windows users. If I had realized this before I started making notes in the margins, I would have returned it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about fonts...
As a typesetter in a large corporation I found this book very helpful when I recently had to organize our fonts on 12 computers. It clearly explains the difference in the various types of fonts and how to use them properly. It also covers in detail all the different type management software (ATM, Suitcase, etc.). After speaking with several designers, it appears that fonts can be the single biggest nightmare and this book would be an asset to any designers library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so good...
I bought Robin's book aobut 2 weeks ago and I have read it over and over.I found that the book was not helpful in getting my fonts organised.I am left with fundamental questions unanswered and a lot of frustration.I am still looking for a book that will show me how to sort my fonts what to keep what to throw and how to do it.This book has some good back ground informationon the benefits of ATM, and the history but what about open fonts, and master fonts? It's dated and not helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best writer on typography around.
Except for her mild endorsement of grunge (why have we spent hundreds of years designing typefaces that are both readable and beautiful only to have a generation of" designers" design deconstructed faces that arelikely to be used only once in a lifetime), Robin Williams is probably themost articulate and literate writer on typography around, digital ortraditional. She is sensitive to those qualities that have somehow beenlost on those who have been brought up facing a monitor rather than a typebook, type case or drawing board. Too many people in business have been ledto believe, and accept the idea, that a typist is automatically atypographer/designer. Every designer who has grown up on the computershould have all of her books at their side, along with Strunk & White,Fowler's Modern English Usage, Roget's Thesaurus and a good dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent design and crash avoidance techniques
"He who dies with the most fonts wins," is a fact of life for a lot of desktop designers for print and the web. However, having tons of fonts of every weight, format and variety gobbles up lots of system memory, and corrupted or conflicting fonts cause crashes. This book tells all on how to get your collection under control, and keep your fonts organized, in good shape, and zipped in place for when you need them. This book is also well written, and will keep you alert and interested, which is most refreshing because I've found many how-to design/computer management books must be read with toothpicks propping up your eyes. It's also just the right length, concise and everything is clearly, not condecendingly, explained. It's a must read for any Mac designer, from the newest newbie to the most advanced. ... Read more

Product Description

This is the first book that addresses the genesis and career of the modern day enterprise system in a comprehensive and robust manner. It does so through setting out a new approach for the study of packaged solutions and presents novel empirical studies based on in-depth ethnographic and longitudinal research conducted within supplier organisations and other relevant sites. The authors shift the debate within the social study of information systems, from one that is primarily focused on ‘implementation studies’, to one that follows software as it evolves, matures and crosses organisational boundaries. Through tracing and comparing the ‘biography’ of a number of software systems the authors develop a new vocabulary for the dynamics that surround standardised software.

Original in its approach, this book draws on a number of ethnographic studies in supplier organisations, user settings, user forums, and applies theories from the Sociology of Technology, Technology Studies, Innovation Studies, and beyond. As such it will be of interest across all of these subject areas and to researchers from the wider fields of Information Systems and Business Studies.

Product Description
"[A] collection of scholars [has] released a monumental study called "A Common Destiny: Blacks and American Society". It offers detailed evidence of the progress our nation has made in the past 50 years in living up to American ideals. But the study makes clear that our work is far from over." - "President Bush Remarks" by the President to the National Urban League Conference. The product of a four-year, intensive study by distinguished experts, "A Common Destiny" presents a clear, readable "big picture" of blacks' position in America. Drawing on historical perspectives and a vast amount of data, the book examines the past 50 years of change and continuity in the status of black Americans. By studying and comparing black and white age cohorts, this volume charts the status of blacks in areas, such as education, housing, employment, political participation and family life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Examination of American Racism
Book is an exemplary examination of American racism from the periods 1940 until 1990.Over the course of two generations, the book looks at the effect of racism as exhibited through a plethora of statistical databases and studies never relying on any single source to make a conclusion.None of their conclusions are astounding for the well read on undisorted historical truths regarding Black oppression in America. The book though is a salient resource for someone who is more fascinated with the conditions of Americans racism and the oppression of Blacks rather than the EXISTENCE of American racism and the oppression of Blacks. For a true scholar of Afrocentricity or similar ilk it will be redundant but exceptionally concise.Never a fascinating read, its brevity and the facility with which it nearly reads itself make it a sharp inclusion for any researcher's collection. The book is diplomatic though; it rarely makes a definitive statement even when the evidence clearly indicates such.By this I'm referring, amnogst others, to the section on criminal justice which is vaguely exculpatory and dismissive owing to the "complexity" of the justice system.Perhaps here is where the book is at its weakest for despite the disproportionate evidence indicating racial bias, the book seems to search for---at times---astronomically surreal explanations for racism in the criminal criminal justice system rather than just admit that it is FULSOME AND DERELICT.Moreover, the book seems to support racist ideology in victim blaming and negating its own conclusions from previous chapters. As such, an astutely critical mind must read the text, or any text for that matter, with an agnostic inquisitiveness taking nothing for granted.Still, nothing is perfect, and the book remains an excellent resource. If nothing, the bibiolography is a near-comprehensive roll call of the Black Studies canon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unprecedented excellence
The best sci-fi radio drama I've ever heard, this volume anthologizes selections from an NPR series that ran in 1999-2000. All stories take place in the future. Lushly and meticulously produced, wonderful acting and nicely written, these plays of various lengths dramatize stories by greats such as Butler, Heinlein, Vonnegut and Bradbury, plus the stage play R.U.R., an international hit of the 1920s that gave us the word "robot." The sheer breadth of themes -- mensturation, over-population, miscegenation, scholarly folly, etc., etc. -- is astonishing, not to mention the mix of styles. Ellison, who introduces the stories, is his usual annoying self, but (thank God!) uncharacteristically brief.

Product Description
The Mac community's leading teacher, Robin Williams, is at it again--this time guiding users through the ins and outs of the newest generation of iMacs.Employing the same friendly, comprehensive approach as its best-selling predecessors, The Little iMac Book, Third Edition has been completely revised to cover all of the iMac's new features--and there are plenty!

Once you get over being dazzled by the iMac's dramatic new hardware design and knock-your-socks-off 15-inch flat-panel display, you'll see that there's plenty going on inside the "box" as well, including a radically redesigned operating system (Mac OS X), a DVD player, iPhoto digital photo organizing software, a new e-mail and address book application, and much more. Robin and co-author John Tollett take you through the old and the new, starting with the basics of using the mouse and getting around the desktop, then going on to show you how to take advantage of the iMac's built-in productivity tools, how to connect to and browse the Internet, and more. Let the book that has influenced a generation of Mac users take you and your iMac into the next generation of computing.

Amazon.com Review
The i in iMac stands for Internet, so it isfitting that The Little iMac Book divides its time betweenexplaining the specifics of the Mac and the ways of the World WideWeb. The author explains larger concepts (such as the differencebetween analog and digital) as well as practical Mac-useradvice. (For example, get a surge protector to prevent your iMac froma lightning-storm zap.)

Robin Williams is an expert on and proponentof the Mac, and her enthusiasm bubbles over into her explanations. Sheencourages her readers to play with the applications, to make drawingson the screen, and not to be afraid "to make something dorky." Hertone is a good match to the philosophy espoused by Apple through theyears: that the computer is a tool that should be accessible toall.

The book extends beyond just Internet exploration to showusers how to set up a database and maximize the preinstalledapplications, such as ClarisWorks and the Williams-Sonoma CookingGuide. She does provide ample coverage for first experiences on theWeb, from setting up an account with an Internet Service Provider(ISP) to sending e-mail and using search engines. A strong beginner'sprimer, The Little iMac Book is as welcoming as the machineit's based on. --Jennifer Buckendorff ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Apparently, I Could Write a Book, Too
After comparing the reviews of all the iMac books endlessly, this is the book I finally chose.Sadly, all that this book had to offer was all the stuff I already knew.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Another well-written book by Robin Williams. This book tells you everything you need to know about the iMac. Robin writes very clearly so that anyone can understand it. Has loads of useful information and website addresses to help you gain even more knowledge. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to know all about the new iMac's.

1-0 out of 5 stars useless
I've just switched from a PC to an iMac with OS X operating system and wish I hadn't. Not only has my new computer locked up at least 3 times in just a couple of days, but "Apple help"--which you can only access online--is worthless. Worse yet, there's essentially no "Help" material included on the machine's hard disk as there is with a Windows PC. ...After the support person revealed the missing steps to my husband we were unpleasantly surprised to learn that in the process of learning how to back-up a file on a CD we had turned two re-writable CDs into "read only" disks. This is a feature of Macintosh computers they don't mention in the "I switched to Apple" ads: if you use Apple software to burn your CDs, then once you put anything on a CD that's it. It is now a Read-Only CD no matter what it said on the label. ..."Apple Help" directed us to use "Disk Utility," and now that we've opened "Disk Utility" from two different locations we find that--surprise!--it won't erase our re-writable CD. It won't do anything, in fact: the menu pops up on the screen, but all the necessary buttons are dim rather than lit up. On an Apple machine, if a button is dim, you can't click on it. ...I'm sending the book back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the new iMac
This book would be great for someone brand new to the macintosh world and has the new flat panel iMac. The authors have another bookThe Little Mac OS X Bookwhich has about 400 more pages of info about OS X, while this book goes into much more detail about the programs the iMac ships with, like iPhoto,AppleWorks, ITunes etc. There are tutorials on doing basicspreadsheets, word, paint and drawings and it is explained in a very informative and fun manner, so that you know HOW to use ALLthe features of your new mac and when you want to know more they tell you where to find that information. The book is very easy to read and it is fun to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Little iMac book
As a new iMac user, i was very dissapointed with the contents of thisbook. I found the information to be too vague. It has yet to provideanswers to my questions. ... Read more
