Gimmicks to make students laugh
I use laughter in my classroom. I struggle bringing students back from the laughter and keeping the students from going to far, that is keeping them from crossing the line between fun and chaos. I was hoping to see ideas and strategies in this book that would help me with these issues. I didn't find what I wanted. Instead, the book is filled with gimmicks to make students laugh. It isn't bad, but it isn't what I was hoping for. I'll try some of the gimmicks, but most of the ideas weren't in line with my style. I don't feel that this book was worth the time I devoted to it.

Excellent reminder for everyone!
I got this for my daughter's teacher.After reading it I can see how it can help me be a better, more playful and understanding parent.You really have to read through the activities to see what ages they might work with, but the time is well-spent.

Lighten up!
All teachers should teach like this -- it works so much better than standing around glaring when things go wrong!
After I read it, I wondered why I had bought it -- I already do so much of what it mentions -- but then one day I realized that the book had worked its magic in an unexpected way; it changed my attitude.I may use humor and laughter when I teach, but what about when something goes wrong?That's the moment to use humor.I needed to lighten up my ATTITUDE; being "fun" for the kids to learn with is different than being fun when things go wrong.I turned some bad moments into teachable moments, and all because I stopped taking MYSELF so seriously.Their attitude change (and a difficult class!) reflected the success.It turned into a great day.

I highly recommend this book -- especially if you are an authoritarian-type teacher.BUY IT!

Real ideas for real life!

My son LOVES this book!
I was given Trashy Town as a gift, and the first thing I thought was that the title was hilarious.I left it on the shelf for a while because my son was into board books only, but he saw it and wanted me to read it to him.At about 20 months, it was his first 'real page' book and he fell in love.It's fun to read the rhythmic lines as many of the reviewers have said.I also love Yaccarino's illustrations.One thing my son loves to do is point out the two little mice that appear on each page, just hanging around Mr. Gilly.My guy loves this book so much that he actually points to garbage trucks out on the road and says "Hi, Mr. Gilly!"So cute.I definitely recommend this book for your child or as a gift.

Great book
This book grows on you.Catchy and melodic repeated refrain.I love the ending where we at least acknowledge that Mr. Gilly needs a bath afterwards.I think it's good that we get to see the dump with the pile of garbage.A good reminder of where things end up when we throw them away.

This book is good for putting kids to sleep.Read it to them a couple of times and then turn off the light and keep repeating:
"Stop! There is trash by the [choose a location].
Mr. Gilly dumps the trash into the truck.
Dump it in-Smash it down-drive around the trashy town.
Is the trash truck full yet? NO!
Mr. Gilly drives on...."

over and over until they fall asleep....

My son has loved this story for years.He first heard it on a video we rented from the library and now he has the book and it is his favorite

very cute book!
i got this for my garbage truck obsessed 2 yr old son.he doesn't normally enjoy me reading to him, he prefers flipping through books on his own, but this one definitely grabbed his attention with it's repetitive, catchy lines.the illustrations are simplistic, yet engaging.one of those children's books that i hope to hold on to even after he outgrows it.
