4-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK FOR FANS OF THE SHOW
THIS BOOK HAS A LOT OF INFO AND IS WELL WORTH READING. ADAM WEST TELLS SOME INTERESTING, UNIQUE AND HUMOROUS STORIES OF HIS LIFE, CAREER, ANDTIME HE WAS ON THE SHOW. I FOUND HIS WRITING VERY WITTY, HUMOROUS AND WELL DONE. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. THE ONLY NEGATIVE I HAVE IS THAT I HOPED IT WAS LONGER AND MORE DETAILED. ALSO THE PHOTOS ARE GRAINY AND OUT OF FOCUS. BUT FOR A TRIVIA AND NOSTALGIC TV WATCHER THIS IS A GOOD BOOK TO HAVE.
VERY RECOMMENDED.

3-0 out of 5 stars A WORTHY ATTEMPT FROM ADAM
Not the best celebrity book I've added to my collection, but not the worst. I'm giving it ***-plus because it appears to be an honest effort. I just wanted more meat and potatoes (read: interesting facts) about making the Batman series than the book offers. We hear about the other actors but it's mostly "Neil Hamilton (Comissioner Gordon) was very serious; Stafford Repp (Chief O'Hara) was a lot of fun..." I wanted some good solid stories about the production of this time capsule of a series, and while they might be dull and boring to Adam, they would have lent a lot of color to the book. I just ordered Burt Ward's book, which I already hear is a complete 180 from West's, and will have to compare the two. Make no mistake, I loved the series and was a Batman-aholic in the 1960s, like most of us, so I was really hoping for some golden chestnuts about Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Burgess Meredith and Vincent Price. West does, however, let us know exactly how he feels about Julie Newmar (and who wouldn't share his admiration of such a 'Living Doll'? ... those of you from the 60s will understand that reference). So-so, but I will take the effort to read it again someday, if that's an endorsement.

3-0 out of 5 stars POW !!!BAM !!! ZOW !!! with some reservations
Back to the Batcave is a definite "must read" for any fan of the classic 60's television series. This work details Adam West's early acting career as well as providing interesting anecdotes and behind the scene looks at what went on during the shooting of Batman. An added bonus is a 41 page annotated episode guide providing the Batfan with air dates, guest stars and plot synopsis'. Grainy photos, sloppy editing and a substandard print job kept this reader from assigning this book a 4 rating. In addition, some fans could probably do without reading the epilogue. West comes off as bitter (almost whining) about not being offered the lead in the 1989 Batman film. I, for one found it mildly embarrassing and depressing. It's my hope that should future editions be printed, this section will be rewritten.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow what a book!

3-0 out of 5 stars West fails to grasp Smith's theory of money, interest , and banking
West covers Smith from a libertarian prespective. All of the topics treated by Smith are covered by West in a more or less satisfactory wayexcept international trade and tariffs ,and money and banking .For instance,West recognizes, correctly ,that publicly funded mass education is the antidote for the negative externality ,called alienation ,that is a byproduct or spillover effect of the division of labor . There is one particular area in his exposition in this book, like all of his writings on Adam Smith, thatsuffers from confusion due to his being unableto differentiate clearly and carefully between enterprise-entrepreneurship, on the one hand ,and speculation on the other. This failure then leads directly to another failure-his inability to comprehend Smith's requirement that in order to prevent the destruction of the aggregate savings of a country it is necessary to fix the rate of interest, and maintain it at a low level permanently in the long run,at a little bit (one half of 1 %)above the equilibrium rate that banks would charge their prime customers for loans(West,1990, pp.4-5,75-81).West's problems start on p.4 where he demonstrates that he does not understand the fundamental difference between decision making under risk versus decision making under uncertainty. He misquotes Smith regarding this vital distinction .Smith uses uncertainty and risk interchangeably in The Wealth of Nations(WN,1776).Smith used the term "tolerable security" to mean that institutions and government safeguards ,especially as related to money and banking, are in place to create a stable ,safe environment that will mitigate against hoarding by consumers and businesses.Smith's use of the term is the equivalent of Keynes's or Knight's use of risk.Intolerable security,on the other hand, will be created if banks make loans available to projectors, prodigals, and imprudent risk takers.(Such loans contribute to the creation of uncertainty, as the term was used by Knight and Keynes,by the creation of bubbles, manias, panics, and crashes.)These categories are essentially the same as the speculators and rentiers of Keynes's General Theory(1936;GT).Consider the following statement by West:"Second, the information requirements of a government wishing to use the usury rate regulation policy would apparently beconsiderable if not overwhelming. It would...have to know from day-to-day the expected rates of return and success probability distributions of thousands of new projects coming on to the market. It is highly questionable whether government administrators have this capability and whether their own subjective biases wouldinterpose themselves."(West,p.81).In fact ,all that such regulators would have to be aware of would be the Business section of The Los Angeles Times or some other such publication.(The probability distributions postulated to exist by West are non existent under conditions of uncertainty.)Such an approach would have prevented Drexel-Burnham- Lambert-Michael Milkin-Ivan Boesky from creating the Savings and Loan Junk Bond debacle of 1982-1991.Total losses totaled 300 billion dollars. The Federal Government had to borrow an additional 325 billion to pay off the losses to depositors financed over 30 years. The totalof 625 Billion is the total cost that will be paid by taxpayers to bail out the junk bond speculators and their victims. The ten Trillion dollars lost in the Dot com -Nasdaq collapse of 2000-2002 could easily have been avoidedsince it was well known(again, all an administrator would have had to do was read the financial section of a major publication and read Alan Greenspan's December 5,1996 speech about " irrational exuberance ") during the 1994-1999 Bubble that huge amounts of bank loans were funding"companies" who were,(a), making only LOSSES and (b),using accounting scams that would never have been allowed by a Securities and Exchange Commission run by a Bill Casey. Finally,we arrive at the 2006-? sub prime real estate mortgage bond collapse that has striking similarities to the 1994 real estate collapse in Japan that led to the 1994-2003 Depression(unemployment tripled from 2% to more than 6 %)in Japan. The cost is already at a Trillion dollars and rising very fast.Again, all the needed information required by a government administrator in order to recognize that a bubble was being created was contained in a major dailynewspaper.Better yet, such an administrator should have been required to read pp.280-340 of theModern Library (Cannan)edition of WN.

West's claims about " knowing the probability distributions" means that he is incapable of being able to realize why Smith emphasized the special importance of money and banking. This industry(banking) requires firewalls to prevent banking failure from taking down the entire economy with it.Banking is unlike any other industry. The spillover /externality impacts on an economy are comparable to the undepletable impacts CO2 build up impacts could have on the world. The requirement of such firewalls is not an interference in the free market.Such requirements are necessary prerequisites that must be in place before a free market can effectively function in the first place.Smith recognized the great damage done in his own time by the South Sea Bubble and John Law's Mississippi Bubble.West still has not comprehended the wisdom of Adam Smith, which ,in respect to the existence of uncertainty and the need for interest rate and credit control laws, simply mirrors the wisdom of the Thomists,Scholastics, and canonist philosophers of the Catholic Church.

Product Description
From Content:

"Just after noon on January 4, 1900, the ancient city of Nuevitas, Cuba, lazily basking in the midday sunshine, witnessed a sight which had not been paralleled in the four hundred years of its existence. A steamer was dropping anchor in the placid water of the harbor a mile off shore, and her decks were thronged with a crowd of more than two hundred eager and active Americans. They wore no uniforms, nor did they carry either guns or swords; and yet they had come on an errand of conquest. They had fared forth from their native land to attack the formidable forests and to subdue the untamed soil of the province of Puerto Principe—a task which required scarcely less courage and resolution than a feat of arms might have demanded in that locality two years before. Well aware that there was a hard fight before them, they were yet sanguine of success and eager to begin active operations. It was the vanguard of the first American colony planted in Cuba.

The vessel that lay at anchor in the beautiful land-locked harbor of Nuevitas was the screw steamer Yarmouth, a steel ship which, if not as fast and elegant as the ocean greyhounds that cross the Atlantic, was large and fine enough to have easily commanded the unbounded admiration and amazement of Christopher Columbus had he beheld her when he landed from the Santa Maria on the coast of Cuba near this point more than four centuries ago. Great changes have been wrought since the days of Columbus in the manner of craft that sail the seas, but less progress has been made by the city of Nuevitas in those four hundred long years. The Yarmouth, substantial if not handsome, and safe if not swift, had brought the colonists to this port without mishap, thus redeeming one of the many promises of the Cuban Land and Steamship Company. Since early morning the vessel had been slowly steaming along the palm-fringed coast of the "Pearl of the Antilles," daybreak having revealed the fact that the boat was too far to the eastward, and late in the forenoon we entered the picturesque bay of Nuevitas, took on a swarthy Cuban pilot, and, gliding quietly past straggling palm-thatched native shacks and tiny green-clad isles, came to anchor in plain view of the city that Velasquez founded in 1514. We had passed two or three small circular forts, any one of which would have been demolished by a single well-directed shot from a thirteen-inch gun. These defenses were unoccupied, and there was naught else to threaten the established peace."
