I received my book in record time...it was early.I enjoyed the book and the book was in good condition.I rate the service a 5 star. Thanks, Rayla D.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Collection of Stories
I purchased this as a gift for my husband, but he has remarked at what a good collection of stories have been put together about John Wayne. This is coming from someone who has a pretty substantial collection of his movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Duke & Friends
Almost like a brief history of the era and new insights into how those movies were made. Enjoyed the ancedotes of fellow artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Book
With John Wayne's 100th birth date coming up I started looking for books on him that I have not read. This book is very enjoyable reading. You learn alot about the man from his fellow co-workers and friends. I would recommend this one to any one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrate the Duke's life!!!!
One of the reasons Wayne was so popular was that he symbolized everything America wanted to be; strong ,brave, loyal, savvy and honest. His character was a fighter who never backed down when he knew he was right. He was a role model to millions, his screen actions were a roadmap to manhood. That was John Wayne,Icon.
But there was another side to Wayne. He was a real man, flesh and blood, and he had real thoughts and feelings, strengths and weaknesses. He wasas brave as his larger-than-life screen persona in his real life, such as in the way he faced up to cancer, and very very human. This is John Wayne, the Man.
This book does an excellent job of showing both sides of the John Wayne coin,Man and Icon. It does it with stories told by people who really knew him. After reading this book you actually feel like you've had a bull session with Duke's friends and co-workers. It's got a very amiable feel to it.
The book also reminds me of Studs Terkel's books. Studs would just turn on a tape recorder and let his subjects pour their hearts out. The author here uses a similar approach. Each story is like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle and at the end of the book you can put all the pieces together to get a clear picture of the Duke.
After I finished reading, I wished I had known him too.

Product Description
"Consult the genius of the place in all," Alexander Pope famously wrote, advocating gardens that are in harmony with the landscape rather than imposed upon it. Gardens in the Spirit of Place takes us on an insider's tour of some of the most beautiful examples of this philosophy, "reflective gardens" that celebrate their regional origins above all. Fourteen gardens across the United States are profiled in this stunning book, which features text by renowned garden writer Page Dickey and more than 150 sumptuous photographs by John M. Hall.

Whether it's an eastern woodland garden on Mount Desert Island, Maine, a Wisconsin farmland garden on Lake Pewaukee, or a garden planted in gravel in Palo Alto, California, each garden presented here is a sensitive and original response to its surroundings. For those who want to make their own regional gardens, the book is full of new ideas and inspiration. At a time of tremendous interest in all things local and native, this collection of gardens, formed as much by their environments as by their creators, will have enormous appeal.

Gorgeous color photography
Full of ideas for those seeking inspiration for their gardens
Locations all across the nation including Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Delaware, Virginia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Texas, California, and Washington

2-0 out of 5 stars mistakes are significant
The correct names of the plants and professionals under discussion do
not go out of style. This book falls short on accuracy. Yes there are pretty photos, but not enough hard information.Panicum virgatum (switchgrass) is a staple of prairie gardens. I see it every day. It does not look like this. (I wonder if it's a Calamagrostis?) If you're looking for Neil Diboll's nursery , use this spelling and Google will help you. These were just two of the simple errors I noticed. It does tend to take pleasure out of reading a book in this genre when one can't trust the
information.
Ken Druse' much earlier book, The Natural Habitat Garden, covers this same topic. The book contains beautiful photos. It's much more helpful. There is accurate, information, written in a readable style that makes the concept of a garden that fits the place come alive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking and Listening to Nature: The Essence of Fine Gardens
Page Dickey is one of our finer writers and knowledgeable experts on gardening and has once again produced a book with the able assistance of nature photographer John M. Hall that becomes an instant classic. For all the beautiful garden books that fill the shelves of our bookstores and homes, few begin with the concept of making the natural setting of the space where people elect to create a garden the primary consideration.

After a beautifully written and informative foreword by Wayne Winterrowd, Dickey crosses the country, pausing in various differing locales to interview and photograph significant gardens from Maine to Massachusetts, New York, Delaware, Virginia, South Carolina, Wisconsin, Texas, California, and Washington, selecting gardens that varying from arid spaces to waterways. At each of the fourteen gardens we are given background as to the types of soil, natural vegetation, moods of the area, history, and the final creative masterpiece gardens that have been created from all of this information.

The result is a beautifully designed, written, photographed and produced book that deserves a place in the libraries of everyone who loves gardening - and the environment! Highly recommended.Grady Harp, March 07

5-0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful garden book from Page Dickey
Ms. Dickey has written wonderful garden books in the past - Breaking Ground, Inside Out and a Duck Hill Journal, to name a few. An inspiring collection of unique gardens that embody their varying surroundings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Killer Clown
Killer Clown is an intense, well- written true-crime story.Filled with shocking details of the John Wayne Gacy murders, it was difficult to put this book down. The book starts with the abduction and murder of his final victim and the discovery of some 29 bodies in Gacy's crawl space, and then works backwards to look in detail at how such an atrocity could have happened.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but not "real" enough.
This book would have been very well written, if it were a work of fiction. I really didn't sense that the events depicted in this book actually occurred.

But I will say that the author went into great detail in all aspects, including the investigation leading up to the arrest of John Gacy, the search of his property (the most shocking and vividly described part of the book), right down to the nitty-gritty details of the jury selection, defense, and prosecution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Killer Clown is the most accurate book on Gacy.I should know.
I have read Killer Clown and some other books on the John Wayne Gacy serial murders, and can unequivocally tell you that the book by Terry Sullivan is the most accurate.I should know.I was the Assistant State's Attorney to whom John Wayne Gacy made several confessions, and I testified for the State of Illinois in the trial.Additionally, I spent several hours with the authors as the book was being prepared. If you are looking for a true chronicle of the events leading up to the arrest, trial and conviction of that animal, this book is what you want.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most EXCELLENT Book!
I read (and still have!) the very first paperback version of this book way back in the autumn of 1985. I am old enough to have watched the initial TV news broadcasts of this case from back in December of 1978! This book is a very interesting and entertaining read about the subtle (and sometimes NOT so subtle)surveillance, tracking, taunting and eventual arrest of this man who had been raping, murdering (and sodomizing AFTER they were dead) boys throughout the seventies. While the book does NOT go into very much detailat all about Gacy's private life (other than a few brief glimpses into his marriage and some scattered observations from a neighbor, co-worker, employee and such)it is still a very good book on Gacy, the man and the monster. I am an AVID collector of all things Gacy and will be putting some of my very valuable collection on display up on YOUTUBE very soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend
Very informative, thorough, factual, and fast-paced. Covers the period from Gacy's last victim through his trial, written from the law enforcement perspective in engrossing detail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Tierney Paper Dolls
The John Wayne Paper Dolls is just great.Shipped and received in short order, arriving in excellent condition - thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars cute collectable
My parents bought this for me a few years ago.Not wanting to ruin the book, I haven't actually used any of the paper dolls. The details of the costumes are suprisingly accurate. My favorite is the one from "The Quiet Man."
The book includes 2 dolls with different poses. The first is a younger Duke with a slightly slouchy pose, which I don't care for as John Wayne would never slouch. The second is an older Duke in a sort of walking pose that's much more in character.
There are 16 costumes that go with the first pose and 15 to go with the second pose.
Along with the one from "The Quiet Man," other costumes included in the book are: "Stagecoach," "Fort Apache," "Red River," and "The Sands of Iwo Jima," to name just a few. They start with his earliest films and end with "The Shootist," his last film.
A great book for die hard John Wayne fans or paper doll collectors.

3-0 out of 5 stars They're paper dolls in a book not actually a reading book
as a kid growning up in the seventies, John Wayne was one of my heroes. Larger than life, so I collected everything on the Duke including Paper dolls. The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Lincoln at Gettysburg brings his eloquence, wit, and on-target perceptions of American life and politics to this fascinating, well-drawn protrait of a twentieth-century hero. In this work of great originality—the biography of an idea—Garry Wills shows how John Wayne came to embody Amercian values and influenced our cultoure to a degree unmatched by any other public figure of his time. In Wills's hands, Waynes story is tranformed into a compelling narrative about the intersection of popular entertainment and political realities in mid-twentieth-century America. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME !!!
THIS IS THE WORST BOOK IVE READ IN YEARS. GARRY WILLS BABBLES ON AND ON AND ON. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THIS P.O.S. IF THE DUKE WAS HERE HE WOULD PUNCH THIS GUY ON THE MOUTH! I DONT NORMALLY CARE TO WRITE A REVIEW BUT THIS GUY IS A CLOWN! HIS LONG WINDED RAMBLINGS SEEM TO COME FROM JEALOUSY AND OPINION RATHER THAN THE FACTS ABOUT THE DUKE. IF THIS BOOK IS SUPPOSE TO BE ABOUT JOHN WAYNE'S (AMERICA), THEN ITS WAS WRITTEN BY A TERRORIST

3-0 out of 5 stars Long on movie-making, short on America
Anyone seriously interested in John Wayne's position as America's icon needs to read this book, which is filled with information about the making of his films and the evolution of his career.

But for the rest of us, the book doesn't come into focus until its conclusion, which, while thought-provoking, comes as an anticlimax.Only at the end does Wills discuss the relationship of Wayne's dominant screen persona with America's self-image. Up till then it's mostly movie-making. All of Wayne's key films are discussed, but almost always with the emphasis on who did what and how.Wills approaches the meaning of the individual films with surprising diffidence for a tough-minded political commentator.

Straightforward and fair-minded though it is, "John Wayne's America" doesn't fulfill the promise of its title.

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost makes it!
I enjoyed the book to some extent but I have a few problems with it. Too often I get the feeling that Wills is driving a tack with a sledge hammer. Far too much on the directors in Wayne's career, especially John Ford, and not enough on Wayne himself. Too much buildup here.
I also disagree with Will's accessment of some of the "important" films in Wayne's career. "Big Jake" was just another "let's crank out a John Wayner" in my opinion. The familiar tension with the female lead that we usually saw with Wayne, a mundane plot, and Richard Boone's portrayl of the villain is so bad it borders on parody. And "Rio Bravo". Critics of Wayne's films seem to love this movie for some reason. It is by far the best of the later Hawks movies. But that isn't saying much. It's an okay movie but that's all. On the other hand I was pleased to see Wills give some ink to "Tall in the Saddle". It amazes me how many so-called John Eayne fans I have encountered who aren't familiar with this film. This is more or less an extended "B" movie but it was well filmed and well casted. And just plain fun to watch. It was important to the development of Wayne as Wills points out. This book is a good read but could have been a lot better. It's very thick in the middle and very thin at the end.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Backgound
John Wayne's America is based on the figure John Wayne. Garry Wills has put so much backgound into this book that it really blowns u away. Not in a bad but the reading of some 300 pages with discriptions of just about everything kinda gets boing after a while. I grew up watching John Wayne with my father and the way that Garry Wills describes him is not what I would picture the duke as being. The book was good though to pass the winter of kansas by. So I'm sure that a more experienced read would come to say that my review was false. However, this is an opinion review and that was my opinion of this book. Garry Wills is a good writer he just doesn't show his best work in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Spotty Trail
This is a maddening book, so full of promise it never really delivers on. Yet I've read it twice, something I don't usually do. Though some might argue, the subject is an important one:the mythic stature of John Wayne as American hero. Given his unparalleled popularity over the years, Wayne's elevation poses some serious questions.Namely, how did this fame come about, and what does the elevation of a cowboy actor to national icon reveal about ourselves. Understanding this revered status should at least tell us something about the mind-set of American men, if not women (Wayne has never been as popular with the latter as with the former, Wills observes). I think it helps to get at the way Wills presents the Wayne phenomenon to target three levels.

First, there is Wayne the person, the man. Wills doesn't devote much space to this level, though the book's subtitle, i.e. "The Politics of Celebrity", might suggest otherwise. Very little is presented of Wayne's personal life or controversial political stances. Most of what is presented are efforts to either debunk popular fictions from the early years, or to pass along opinions of others, which about the man are usually unflattering, (Ford's disapproval of Wayne's lack of war service). Clearly the author believes Wayne's mythic status comes from the screen and not from the private individual.

The second level is Wayne the actor, the commanding screen presence. Despite many insights along the way, Wills falters badly by spending way too much time on seemingly irrelevant details of John Ford's personality and film style, many of which (the diagrams of seating arrangements in "Stagecoach", for example), shed no light on Wayne the actor. Wills' s preoccupation with Ford to the exclusion of Wayne is a serious defect, which may imply that the author found Ford the more compelling of the two, and could not restrain himself. Yet it is not Ford who is enshrined in the national consciousness, it is Wayne.

The third level is the most important:Wayne the mythic figure, the mirror in which we catch our own reflection. Here Wills both succeeds and fails. He succeeds by linking the Wayne figure with some of our most enduring national myths:unbounded western horizons, uncorrupted primitive, Jeffersonian ideal. But here in the book's last chapter, which should bring together the preceding 300 pages but which is only 12 pages long, there is no real synthesis of what has gone before. There is no effort at showing how, despite the many pages given over to him, Ford' romanticized vision of the Old West shapes the Wayne myth, or how that same vision embodies enduring national myths, or how to a lesser degree Hawk's vision taps into those same legends through the Wayne figure. In short, Wills fails at this crucial third stage to adequately fill in the blanks between Wayne the actor and Wayne the myth.

I get the feeling the author intended a deeper work than is there in the result, but instead got sidetracked on underdeveloped details that end up shedding little light on the Wayne phenomenon. Too bad, because there is an important project still unfulfilled. Certainly Wills has the skills to bring it off. I only wish he had. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I understand why people like it but...
Overall I thought it was difficult to read. Even though I love the biblical counseling process I could just never get into this book the way I did something like Spiritual Depression by Martin Lloyd Jones. The content is what you would expect from MacArthur.

I am concerned that in a number of places the authors seem to raise the Bible to be the fourth person of the Trinity. The Bible is God's gift to us but they seem to credit the Bible for changing human hearts when in fact that's the work of the Holy Spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, scholarly and practical
The purpose of this book is to expose and refute the prevalent influence of humanistic, worldly philosophies (originating from modern psychology schools of thought) on the thinking of Christians, and specifically counselors, today. Its purpose is to reiterate the complete sufficiency of Scripture to meet every human spiritual need and address every human problem."The Bible PLUS" anything is not true Biblical counseling. The purpose of this text is also to familiarize pastors and laymen with the principles and methods of Biblical counseling that they might apply them both formally and informally in the local body of believers. The purpose of this book is to reaffirm the necessity of the Biblical counselor's commitment to the Person and sovereignty of God.

One of the greatest strengths of this book is that it is a compilation from multiple authors.Eight credible men writing from various viewpoints on Biblical counseling topics uniformly support the purposes of the book as articulated above.I found three chapters to be outstanding: Chapter 4, "The Godward Focus of Biblical Counseling," by Douglas Bookman, Chapter 7, "Spiritual Discipline and the Biblical Counselor," by Robert Smith, and Chapter 9, "Instilling Hope in the Counselee," by Wayne A. Mack.

There are many things with which I agree in this book.Personally, I found much food for thought in the Psalm 19 paradigm on pages 41-46 (John Street) and 205-210 (John MacArthur). Also, I greatly appreciated the enlightening discussion of a dichotomous vs. trichotomous view of man, something that I've wrestled with in my own mind for several years. (pp. 256-258)

Several statements that were particularly significant to me were:
"A conscious commitment to a Godward focus in biblical counseling is also imperative because destructive consequences are certain to follow when people exalt themselves rather than God."(p. 56)
"In short, a lie is powerful not because it is deceptive but because it is delicious." (p. 58)
"In all counseling problems involving a conflict with another person, there is evidence of failure in that person's relationship with God."(p. 92)
"Biblical change cannot take place without hope."(p. 114)
"God's commands are not merely demands, they are invitations--invitations to fullness of life. They are not merely obligations, they are opportunities. [Opportunities to do right]They are not merely precepts, they are promises. [Promises of the power to obey](p. 137)

I found several things that can aid in a counseling ministry.Wayne Mack's explanation of what the counselee is actually saying when he says, "I can't" is excellent and very useful in exposing both selfish motives and ignorance.(p. 128) The same author's challenge to produce a personalized chain-referenced Bible (p. 174) was taken to heart and is something I hope to do in the near future. In chapter 13, I found Mr. Mack's definition of biblical commitment using the acronym ACCEPT to be a potentially very useful tool. (p. 177)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Biblical Counseling
This book is the perfect compliment to Jay Adams' "Christian Counselor's Manual". While the Counselor's Manual is primarily a conversational "how-to" guide this book is more "scholarly" and more profoundly addresses the Scriptural and logical reasons to adopt and apply the Biblical Counseling model. If you have questions about whether the Biblical Counseling model is appropriate or whether Scripture is sufficient for addressing the counseling needs of individuals in today's complex society, this is the book to purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Counseling: How to Counsel Biblicall
This book is a great complement to the three other foundational works in biblical counseling: Curing the Heart by Bill Hines and Howard Eyrich, Instruments in the Hands of the Redeemer by Paul Tripp and Competent to Counsel by Jay Adams. MacArthur provides good practical application to the multidimensional process framework provided by Hines and Eyrich.

Every pastor and every lay person who desires to practice biblical counseling should have this work as well as the others mentioned in his/her personal library. They provide the foundational framework and will often be referenced for wisdom on a variety of problems.

Product Description
New York Times bestselling author Allen St. John started off looking for the world's greatest guitar, but what he found instead was the world's greatest guitar builder. Living and working in Rugby, Virginia (population 7), retired rural mail carrier Wayne Henderson is a true American original, making America's finest instruments using little more than a pile of good wood and a sharp whittling knife. There's a 10-year waiting list for Henderson's heirloom acoustic guitars -- and even a musical legend like Eric Clapton must wait his turn. Partly out of self-interest, St. John prods Henderson into finally building Clapton's guitar, and soon we get to pull up a dusty stool and watch this Stradivari in glue-stained blue jeans work his magic. The story that ensues will captivate you with its portrait of a world where craftsmanship counts more than commerce, and time is measured by old jokes, old-time music, and homemade lemon pies shared by good friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clapton's Guitar
This book is a close-up view/account of the Master Guitar Builder, Wayne Henderson building a masterpiece. It touches on the personality, kindness, generosity and genius of a "country boy" from Grayson County, Va.

Wayne is also a gifted, finger picking guitarist. He has a festival, in his name, and also does personal appearances.

You know how it is when you come across a book that you enjoy so much, you really hate to see it end?
Well, that's how it was for me, with "Calpton's Guitar".Just a well written, informative, and entertaining book.

If you are looking for a lot on Clapton himself, you might be dissapointed, but if you love guitars and want to learn about the world of beautiful vintage instruments, this is a great book.

Allen St. John's tale of winding through the backwoods of America's eastern forestlands after Wayne Henderson is full of fascinating tidbits of vintage guitar lore.Although I appreciate his detailed, vivid description of Henderson crafting the ultimate acoustic instrument, what really thrilled me were the up close and personal encounters with so many classic vintage Martin guitars - the models from which Henderson gained his appreciation of the art of sound. For those of us who have spent a lifetime chasing the ultimate used instrument for sale, it's a great way to spend a few afternoons by the pool - a wonderful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspirational
This book blends a humorous depiction of the life and work, not of the God of Guitar (E.C) but a god of acoustic guitar building and at least a minor diety of flat-pick guitar and country humor. This book was very entertaining as well as inspirational for those of us who have dreamed of making the perfect acoustic guitar.
A great read in many ways!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wayne Henderson's Clapton's guitar
This is really about a character from the backcountry of Virginia who used to be a mailman as well as a maker of guitars and mandolins, but whose workmanship has led to his name being mentioned as one of the best handbuilt guitar makers on the planet.Wayne Henderson's life is documented and explored as an unusual character of modest means and humble nature who has developed as one of the best guitar pickers who uses steel picks on multiple fingers. He has also served as a mentor to several other guitar/mandolin makers who were in his employ, and his personal success as a luther has led to no more mail delivery, and a waiting list measured in years.Since I read this tome, I have personally seen Wayne perform 3 times, and have spoken to him several times. He is very approachable, and even let me hold his 1,000th guitar for my perusal when last speaking to him.He is a multi-talented individual with a quintessential country-inspired modesty which makes him all the more charming as a person. The book is well written, and gives you a very nice exposure to the details of making a guitar. As a woodworker myself, the references were not new to the details discussed, but would be easy to comprehend by someone not familiar with them, I believe.Recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buried Dreams vrs Killer Clown
Reading these reviews that sound conflicting, I will try to sum up the difference between Killer Clown and Buried Dreams and it is simply this: Cahill is a writer, Sullivan is not. And although Sullivan had help, his book is still almost coldly factual, even as it flows well, but you will not get much out of it that can't be found on a hundred crime sites, besides his own frustration and dedication during the investigation. I'm not condemning this in any way, and if that is what you want as a reader, then Killer Clown will satisfy your cravings for facts and justice.

Cahill, on the other hand, has the same facts of course, but what he does with them is something you won't find anywhere else, something unique. He tells the tale almost from Gacy's point of view, piecing his sick-mindedness and subsequent murders together in a remarkably cohesive and insightful way. Right from the beginning. Some--probably most-- serial killers talk and 'fess up before their executions. Gacy did his confessing early, and then later went for the long shot that somehow he would place doubts in people's minds and save himself from death, by denying what he did. Definitely, he had no remorse. Except for a few slip-ups here and there, he gave no further information on his motivation or how his victims died. Using the facts he had, Cahill filled in these blanks, and answered the tough questions that Sullivan couldn't or wouldn't.

Buried Dreams is not just facts. It is not a text-book blanket profiling of collective criminal minds. It is not the investigation, trial and conviction from the detectives and lawyers points of views. It is as close as Cahill could get to showing us Gacy, personally, from the inside and I doubt it's far off the mark. It's consistent with Gacy's personality right up to his lethal injection. Yes, chilling. As it should be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rather generic, but serviceable
This is a true crime book that attempts to capitalize on the gory nature of the subject to elicit the strongest possible emotional reaction from the reader. Forays "inside the mind" of Gacy are basically subjective, and may be more concerned with generating outrage than with getting at any larger truth.

That being said, it also does a serviceable job of laying out the facts of the case, and anyone who wants to learn about the horrifying details will get their fill here.

Balancing sensationalism and facts is the basic task of the true crime reporter-- this author has chosen to be as sensationalistic as possible, but also has included far more information than is necessary. This means that the book has passages which are a little boring, and passages that are very, very disturbing.

If you want to learn about Gacy, then I suppose that this book is as good a read as any, although something about the fact of the book itself seems sleazy-- for all his condemnation, Cahill is basking in the reflected glow of an obscene act, and that is a little unsettling.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow Moving
Some of this book was interesting, but most was very slow moving. It just didn't captivate.I believe it could have been better written.I don't feel that I or the author ever got "into the mind" of John Wayne Gacy. Then again, to the author's credit, after reading the book, I'm not sure if anyone could accomplish this feat.I came away feeling that on the surface, Gacy seemed calm and even rational almost all of the time, but was totally the opposite while committing the murders.Either way, the book didn't flow well and is lacking. It wasn't as "meaty" as expected... no pun intended.

5-0 out of 5 stars true crime at it's very best
I first read this book in 1988 and recently read it again. It still gave me the creeps. In the same league as Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi and The Boston Strangler by Gerald Frank. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars ... How Well Do You Know This Guy, Anyway?
Chilling. I could not put this one down. This book is a dramatized cover of the life and crimes of John Wayne Gacy which reads like a fiction novel (read: not boring or heavy with Dr. Bob said this) yet provides clear, factual, and consistent information in with some of the author's speculation as to what went on in the mind of Mr. Gacy.
The end result is a story which will make the hair on your arms stand on end - not only with possibilities and facts, but the feasible likeness of Mr. Gacy's mindset through his actions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Duke:A Love Story
DUKE:A LOVE STORY is a stunning, deeply moving book:the warm, funny, tender, and finally, tragic story of the last years of one of America's most beloved men -- by the woman he loved.
John Wayne and Pat Stacy were together for seven years. For all those years she was his secretary and companion; for the last five the woman he loved, openly and with pride, and who loved him back. They shared everything together, alone and with his family and friends, and the Wayne she gives us is very different from the Wayne of legend.

This is "Duke" the man, tender, loving, stubborn, generous, cantankerous, impulsive, humorous, and, finally, full of rage at the cancer he had to battle for the second time in his life; the cancer that, as Stacy cared for him day after day and shared his agony, cut away at the man who had been so vital and strong -- but to which he refused to succumb.

DUKE:A LOVE STORY is a revelation, a book full of joy and sorrow and courage -- the real John Wayne brought to vivid, loving life. ... Read more

Product Description
The best-selling author of Lincoln at Gettysburg explores the life and times of John Wayne and his legend, explaining how the man, Marion Morrison, became a myth and how that myth shaped Americans' political attitudes and ideas. 75,000 first printing. $60,000 ad/promo. Tour.Amazon.com Review
This book poses an interesting question: How is it that JohnWayne came to embody a certain politics for America? In giving hisanswer, Wills flashes his usual encyclopedic knowledge of intellectualand cultural materials. He knows his Aristotle and his Groucho andknows when to use them. The knee-jerk analysis of Wayne's status isthat he was a blustery flag-waver. Wills's answer is more subtle: thatWayne "stood for an America that was disappearing or haddisappeared." And according to Wills, Wayne did this in differentways at different stages of his career. In his early successes (suchas Stagecoach), he represented naive virtue; later he wouldportray the dark acceptance of responsibility (Sands of IwoJima). And finally, he moved on to model a conscious acceptance ofthe anachronism of all such individual honor (The Shootist). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars John Wayne, Garry Wills didn't like you
Any perusal of this book would, in my opinion, show the reader that author Garry Wills, however eminent and Nobel Prize-winning he may be, has done a hatchet job on an American idol whose lifestyle and political views he finds abhorrent and indefensible.

Wills is dismissive and condescending toward John Wayne -- originally Robert, later Marion, Morrison -- in a thousand ways, some subtle, some obvious. His father, who an earlier, more definitive biography depicted as a well-meaning man and loving father, but rather deficient as a provider, is described in Wills' book as a failure, plain and simple. His mother, who blatantly favored Wayne's younger brother all her life and never evinced much real love for her elder son, is given a pass. Duke Morrison's football career as recalled by himself and others is dismissed as being mostly a fabrication and himself as being a mostly third-rate player.

Wayne's recollection that he got his start in the movie business as a "grip" through 1920s cowboy star Tom Mix, is brushed off as "unlikely." Director John Ford is described as a Svengali who molded a passive John Wayne in such a way as to suit himself. A fight that almost occurred between John Wayne and a black actor during the filming of one movie is stopped before it starts, according to Wills, because Ford shouts to the black actor, "Don't hurt him! We need him!" The assumption is that, naturally, the African American actor would have beaten Wayne to a pulp if given half a chance. Wayne's failure to serve in World War II is depicted as solely out of self-interest (and possibly cowardice). Roy Rogers didn't serve, either; does that also make him a self-serving coward, Mr. Wills?

Wills ridicules the general tenor of Wayne's many Western movies, and appears to have a superior, looking-down-his-nose attitude toward the millions of Americans who loved both them and their star. Wayne's conservative political views come in for a special blistering by Wills, who indulges in the usual liberal denouncing of the so-called "Red Scare" of the late 1940s, and of Wayne's gradually dawning political consciousness of those days.

The book does have its good points. Wills does excellent analyses of several of the Duke's later, more serious movies, although the conclusions he arrives at are usually not the ones I would have reached.

But taken all in all, it's obvious to me that Garry Wills did not hold John Wayne in high regard (nor his fans), and therefore wrote this biography in an attempt to "take him down a peg." In my opinion, all he really did was display his own prejudices for all of us to see.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Serious and Egaging Wayne Biography
Wills, author of many other works, including the amazing Lincoln at Gettysburg, sets an examination of Wayne's films squarely in the American zeitgeist - given them added heft and importance.
Wills will appear at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral on October 15, 2007, for a conversation with Dean Alan Jones. It will also be webcast live and archived for later listening.More information is available at: http://www.gracecathedral.org/calendar/detail.php?eid=1053.

5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing biography of the Duke!
An immensely engaging analysis of the actor who for many years was the #1 most popular film star in the world, even many years after his death. The author diagnostically and exhaustingly detailed perspective of Wayne the actor vs. Wayne the man is what sets it apart as a landmark bio. You will not be displeased. In one chapter the author discusses the fact that, after having seen "High Noon" he was so upset with the scene wherein Coop throws his marshall's badge into the dusty road that he was instrumental in seeing to it that the script writer was investigated and later forced out of the country after being suspected of pro-communist leanings during the McCarhty witchtrials. Wayne is ultimately admired as an artist yet condemned for his staunchly conservative political views ... Read more

A portrait of one of Australia's longest-serving prime ministers, this biography goes behind the public image to find neither the strong-willed man of principle his supporters like to imagine nor the cunning opportunist painted by his foes. The discussion covers Howard's suburban middle-class upbringing and his success at implementing his polices, concluding that although the image of the ordinary bloke has helped his enduring popularity, he—like George Bush—possesses a number of uncommon strengths that have made him one of the most formidable leaders in Australian political history.

4-0 out of 5 stars John Howard: a professional politician
John Howard was sworn in as the 25th Prime Minister of Australia on 11 March 1996.He is currently Australia's second longest serving Prime Minister, and has been a member of every Australian Parliament since 1974. Australia will have a federal election between now and the end of 2007, so this biography is particularly timely.

If the success of a politician is ultimately measured in how many elections s/he faces and wins, then John Howard has been particularly successful. In this biography, Messrs Errington and Van Onselen provide some insights into the man behind the politician and assess his strengths and weaknesses as a professional politician.

Highly recommended reading for all with an interests in Australian politics generally as well as those with a particular interest in Australia's Federal Government.

Product Description
John Wayne A Western Celebration, is just that, A Western Celebration! This beautifully produced volume is a stunning, comprehensive visual work showcasing the entire collection of the Westerns and rare and vintage movie posters of John Wayne's career. It is an exclusive, stirring tribute to the unforgettable Duke, a man as large as the American West that he so loved. It celebrates Duke's Centennial year and his many contributions to the colorful tapestry of the West through his 87 Western movies. John Wayne had the unique ability to capture the spirits and show us the faces off the rugged individuals who left their tracks across the wild and unforgiving landscape of the West. It was the cowboy who became the American folk hero. And it was big John Wayne who came to represent the American cowboy and all the great qualities of America around the world. This book is for those who are proud to be American. An imposing feature length Western filmography that salutes and honors a timeless American. Maureen O'Hara best summed it up with her speech to the United States Congress in 1979 when she said: "To the people of the world, John Wayne is the United States of America. He is what they believe it to be, what they hope it will be, and what they hope it always will be." Written by celebrated Texan author, Jane Pattie. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference for John Wayne
"Pop Culture Legends: John Wayne" was written by Don Nardo , for Chelsea House Publishers . The introduction of this book was written by Leeza Gibbons, from the popular Hollywood news show "Entertainment Tonight" and describes the current role in Pop culture and how it affects American politics and ideas. The first chapter describes how Wayne (formerly Marion Morrison) was discovered by Raoul Walsh while Wayne was working as a prop man. From chapter two on, the author writes about Wayne's life and how he became such an icon. This book is very informative of how most of John Wayne's work came to be, and his various marriages and divorces with different women. "Pop Culture Legends: John Wayne" is composed nicely, and has good photographs to accompany the text. I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in Wayne's work, and even pop culture of his time. Having not read any other biographies on John Wayne , or been alive while he was popular , I cannot tell if this biography is complete , but its definitely a good read if you're a john Wayne fan . I give this book 5 out of 5 spurs.

This is a terrific and sometimes moving book about John Wayne, one of my favorite movie stars of all time.OK, maybe he wasn't the world's greatest actor, but he had a larger than life presence on the screen and was a hell of a father and good citizen off the screen. The author goes to great lengths to cover all these different aspects of the Duke's life and also tells a lot of backstage stories that are fascinating. I agree with the author that his best performance was in The Searchers.Everybody should read this book. ... Read more

This biography charts John Wayne's rise to stardom and investigates his remarkable durability. It focuses on the manufacturing of "John Wayne" from the raw material of Marian Morrison, the young man from Iowa who became a myth. Wayne avoided World War II service, but his greatest successes were in playing America's military heroes. The book traces his career from the cowboy serials that almost doomed his career, through his breakthrough with "Stagecoach" and "Red River", to the pinnacle of his popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. ...
