The author examines one of Paul's most rhetorically dramatic texts in order to reveal how it relies on the commonplace ideas and argumentative strategies of the Hellenistic world. As a result the reader can see how the apostle invented his ideas and appreciate how inextricably Paul's mission was wrapped up in the world in which he lived. ... Read more

Good ministers and preachers still have doubts. If you haven't got them, if you believe you've found the answer in this or that practice, ritual or scripture, and that that is the universal truth for everyone, at all time, you've lost it. The answer is in the search, in growing in wisdom, experience and love. The myths, stories and doctrines of Christianity have shaped our culture, the way we think and act, and they can still help us on our path if we let them, give them room to breathe and change us. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars clarity from the fuzzy edge
Paul Walker describes his book as a "contribution from the edge."Christianity's edge is increasingly fuzzy and porous. There are huge numbers of people who find themselves somewhere along the edge - bored by church liturgies, unimpressed by doctrinal certitude, turned off by the self-importance of the clergy, but still searching.Walker's book is a contribution not only from the edge, but to it.

An Anglican minister, Walker writes with a degree of honesty and soul searching on topics such as prayer, God, Jesus, the Bible, and morality that is unexpected in a clergyman. For example, he once emphasized the centrality of prayer in his preaching, he admits, while never quite succeeding at it himself.A sort of breakthrough came once he "stopped trying."That was when he noticed a natural, internal dialogue that gave him a new way of looking at what prayer is.Walker's discovery about prayer illustrates a pattern that variously recurs as he takes up other topics.Letting go the traditional church preoccupation with doctrine about Jesus, Walker continues to find in himself a deep love for the man and his message.

This is a wonderful, dare I say, pastoral book for honest searchers.More than that, it is an invitation to conversation on the search for faith, God or whatever it is that impresses us with the notion that life is about something beyond ourselves.Walker longs for community that consists of "people truly open to each other and welcoming of newcomers."For those prepared to let go the rigid boundaries of church, Walker's book may serve as a guide for rediscovering "church" as precisely that kind of open community.Searching, dialogue, openness, welcome, community:these qualities describe an "edge" that many will recognize as central to their spiritual needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Contemporary Christian View
Here is a book that presents a true agnosticism, not a trite apology for an indifference to the question of God (as so many modern agnostic expressions are) but an enquiry that is engaging and transforming. Walker's personal testimony confronts contemporary Christianity and finds much of it wanting. His response, however, is not to give up on the Christian search for meaning but to seek to find a continuing value in the process, regardless of how difficult or uncomfortable the journey may be.

Walker doesn't operate at the margins of faith, he considers the big issues; the meaning of life; the existence of God; the nature of Jesus and the authority of the Bible among them. The vision he articulates, whilst remaining personal is, I suspect, just about the only position that any thinking twenty-first century Christian could arrive at. We must seek God in the elusive moments of transcendence that occasionally overtake us, not in ancient mythology or the expectation of miracle. We must find Jesus in his message of love, compassion and social justice rather than in the theological embellishments of later centuries. And in the Bible we should find inspiration in the story of the search for God that an entire society embarked upon, not see it as some bizarre divine and unchanging ethical code.

I would contend that "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" represents almost the only future for Christianity that will allow it to remain relevant and purposeful. For that reason alone it deserves a wide readership, both in the Christian community and beyond.

I ordered a book through another online book provider and received three different delivery dates which were well beyond the date originally quoted.I needed the book fast for an online class so I ordered through AMAZON whcih delivered the book through the postal system arriving in 4 or 5 days much to my surprise.Excellent service.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not As Helpful as the Title Suggests
If you are interested to see what other companies are doing, who have no relevance to yours, this book is for you.If you are looking for practical guidance that you can use in your own situation, buy something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, but read this for risk management fundamentals
After reading `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off', I must say that I can recommend it. Buy it if you want to know how large companies have been dealing with risk management in the past years. This book will not really help you understand the fundamentals of risk management, and that isn't the primary focus of this book.

I would recommend that you do not read `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off' just by itself. I highly recommend `Controlling the controllable: the management of safety' by Dr. Jop Groeneweg. This is a must-read if you are interested in risk management and it will give you an good basis for reading `Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off'.

`Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off', unlike what may be suggested, isn't about companies on the cutting edge of risk management. In my opinion that's only partly true. These companies are dealing with highly visible risks, but in risk management that is the easy part of the job. Dealing with the invisible risks, most often those risks lurking in a company's own organization, is much harder. It is unfortunate that the Tripod risk management methodology isn't discussed in this book because it is THE methodology for integrated risk management.

I would recommend that those interested also read up on a risk management tool called BowTie XP, which really represents the leading edge of risk management research today. I believe the majority of companies in this book will be using BowTie XP for risk management in the coming years.

`Making Enterprise Risk Management Pay Off' is quite readable and I enjoyed reading it. When you read it, realize that risk management is evolving quickly. Don't try to copy the companies in this book with respect to risk management, unless you only want to deal with highly visible risks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Lessons in De-Risking, in a Very Readable Book !
After the Enron meltdown, risk management is as hot as fire. You can?t pick up the newspaper without stories about all the risks facing businesses and investors.

I run a medium size business in a big city. If you want to ?de-risk? a company, you need to learn from managers who are already doing it and doing it well. This book has very detailed cases about the risk management programs at companies like Microsoft and DuPont with managers telling their own stories. The book is short on fancy theories and long on practical ideas.

I admit I was surprised to see Chase bank among these elite companies.Chase wrote off $500 million because of Enron. But you have to wonder how much more they would have written off without a good risk management program. No one ever said these systems are perfect. The Chase chapter even describes two big problems the bank had with their bookkeeping and how they were fixing them.

This book has everything you need to get started in a good risk management program.Lord knows businesses had better manage their risks or they?re history. ... Read more

Product Description
Just over 50 years ago, in Little Rock, Arkansas, nine brave black students stood up for their rights and made history. The integration of Central High School in Little Rock changed the course of education in America forever, and became one of the pivotal points in the Civil Rights Movement.

In Remember Little Rock award-winning author Paul Robert Walker uses eyewitness accounts and on-the-scene news photography to take a fresh look at a time of momentous consequence in U.S. history. Here, we get the story from all sides: the students directly involved; their fellow students, black and white; parents on both sides; military, police, and government officials. The author uses personal interviews with many of those who attended the 50th anniversary celebration in 2007, and explores what happened, what’s changed, what hasn’t, and why.

This latest addition to National Geographic’s popular Remember series also includes a timeline of the Civil Rights Movement, selected postscripts, a guide to resources, and an extensive index. The foreword to this inspiring book is written by Terrence J. Roberts, Ph.D., one of the Little Rock Nine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The description of the plight of these young people on September 4, 1957 was so poignant tears rolled down my cheeks as I read
Nine young people prepared to go to school on September 4, 1957.Never in a million years would they have guessed what horror awaited them that day.Seven of the young people had received a call telling them where to meet. They would travel to Central High School together, but two, Elizabeth Eckford and Terrence Roberts, were somehow left out of the mix and were not informed of the plan. The mob had begun to gather and churn, but the National Guard was there.Terrence said later that "he believed the National Guardsman were there to protect him."He couldn't have been more wrong. They were there to keep them from integrating the school. It was a horrifying, pivotal moment in the lives of nine talented young men and women, one in which they would never forget.

In 1957 it was still the "Jim Crow South."Much as some people would like it, "separate and equal" didn't apply to schools. There was an uproar in the South and Little Rock, Arkansas was no different.Nobody messed with their way of life and things like "The Southern Manifesto," which claimed the Supreme Court had no right to interfere with education in the states," could have been their mantra. An application process selected the best and the brightest.Seventeen were chosen to attend Central High, but only nine would actually attempt to integrate.Mary Thomason filed suit to postpone segregation. It wasn't her cup of tea.The suit was denied. The nine young people started off to school. The mob began to churn. . . Elizabeth and Terrence soon realized they were in trouble.

The description of the plight of these young people struggling to get an education, especially that of Elizabeth Eckford, was so incredibly poignant that tears began to roll down my checks when I read about them. This book is seamlessly written and brings the reader back to a point in history that many in this nation would sooner forget than pore over in detail once again. When I read it, I felt as if it was a current event rather than a historical look back. The thoughts of several of the Little Rock Nine were very interesting. There were numerous sepia-toned photographs that fully illustrated the seriousness of the conflict. In the back of the book, some very interesting postscripts, and a civil rights timeline.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richie's Picks: REMEMBER LITTLE ROCK
"When asked what the white students thought of her,[Minnijean] gave an
interesting and thoughtful reply: 'They are anxious to findout what we are like.
They are torn between their parents andtheir own minds. They just don't
know what to do.'"

"On Thursday, October 3, a group of white students --organized by the
Mothers League -- staged a walkout to protest the presence ofthe black students
in their school.Although approximately 150 left, abouthalf circled back and
reentered the school when they realized that fewerstudents walked out than
expected. The rest crossed Park Street to avacant lot at the corner of 16th
Street.
"There they hung a straw-filled dummy of a black student froma big oak
tree...They danced around it, kicking it, punching it, stabbing it,and setting
it on fire.As one boy stabbed the effigy with a penknife, aphotographer at
the scene asked another boy standing nearby what he wasthinking.'Oh, if
that were only a real one!' he said.
"The boy who said it, Jim Eison, grew up to be a historian fortwo Little
Rock museums.Forty years later, at a time when there were manypublic
apologies for the events at Central, he offered an unusual but honestperspective:
'I was a product of my day and time, and I was acting from my early
upbringing...The sentiment was true.'"

REMEMBER LITTLE ROCK is a powerful story largely toldthrough the voices of
the black and white students who were at the center of theintegration of
Little Rock's Central High School in 1957.It is filledwith photos of the
characters and incidents that were, for several months, the epicenter of the U.S.
Civil Rights Movement. Some photos are iconicimages while many others I
had never before seen.

As evidenced by the testimony of these students, thereis much to be learned
here about thinking for oneself and comingto understand the need to develop
one's own moral compass.

In researching for the book, Paul Robert Walker learned that,"Day after
day, the Nine faced insults, threats, and physical violence. They endured
punching, shoving, and kicking. They had spitballs, rubberbands, and paper clips
shot at them, their heels stepped on by white studentswalking behind them,
ink sprayed on their clothes, knives flashed in theirfaces, and their heads
and clothing shoved into toilets.Glue and tacksand glass were placed on
their seats, and their gym showers were turned toscalding hot.Their lockers
were broken into and their books were stolenor destroyed so often that many
of them stopped carrying books to school. These were everyday events. Some
days were worse thanothers."

And yet, the classroom could become a sanctuary from theignorance and
violence.Ernest Green, the one high school senior inthe group of nine recalled,
'...Of all the things that have happened atCentral, the most significant
was the friendly attitude that students showedtoward me the day of the rioting.
"'The type of thing that was going on outside, people beaten, cursed, the
mob hysterics and all of this going on outside...we inside theschool didn't
realize the problems that were occurring and continually studentswere
befriending us.I remember one case in particular in my physicsclass.I was three
weeks behind in my assignments [by time the legalwrangling finally permitted
he and the other eight to attend CentralHigh], and a couple of fellows
offered to give me notes and to help me catchup the work that I had missed.I
was amazed at this kind ofattitude being shown toward the Negroes.'"

Reading the recollections of the participants, it isclear that lives are
forever changed through one's being a witness toor participant in social
change.REMEMBER LITTLE ROCKillustrates how it was that teenagers in the midst
of creating andrecreating their own personal identities stood at the
epicenter ofthis pivotal event in 20th century American history. It is a bookthat
makes it so easy for today's readers to imagine being there, and to take
what they learn from those who were involved in the dramaof Little Rock and
transfer that knowledge to the 21stcentury social issues that their own
generationfaces.

"'I felt very special at that moment,' remembered TerrenceRoberts.'I was
aware that something momentous was taking place thatmorning although years
would pass before I would truly grasp the overallsignificance of what had
happened. This was the first time sinceReconstruction that federal troops had
been ordered into the South to protectthe rights of African Americans. On
that morning, however, my primarythought was that maybe now I would not be
killed for simply trying to go toschool.'"

I love this sort of informational book!Sixty-fourcompelling pages -- half
of them photographs -- and readers can soeasily cruise right through it and
get so much out of it.Somereaders will undoubtedly be interested in going
on to read MelbaPattillo Beals' WARRIORS DON'T CRY.

Here in California, where American history is studied inthe fifth, eighth,
and eleventh grades, students of all threeages will be engaged and
enlightened by this outstanding,well-researched book about a group of nine teens who,
in theirday, changed the world.

I was very satisfied with the condition of the books, the price and the quick and effecient service. I will continue ordering as the need arises. Thank- you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Move over believers in evolution.
One cannot read about the intricacies of the human body and the miracle that keeps us moving as each part works both separately and together. I borrowed a friend's copy, but had to buy my own to take notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intellectually enlightening - personally challenging
Dr. Brand's book can't help but leave the reader feeling as though they are disconnected with what is taking place around them. From a personal perspective, it's impossible to appreciate the complexity of performing even the most routine activities throughout the day.On a large scale, this book challenges all of us to consider what our obligations are to society as a whole, exposing what an isolated perspective most of us are able to maintain living in America. This is an excellent choice for anyone involved in a reading group.

5-0 out of 5 stars new way to look at our bodies - physical and spiritual
I learned about the functions of the body in an easy to understand layman's discussion: that is, the skeleton, the skin, etc.He tells stories about people he has treated that exhibited some of the illnesses when these areas of the body do not work as they should. At the same time he relates this information on a spiritual realm.Although the book is not new, I liked the way he wrote and found it an easy way to learn about a lot of how my body works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Look at the Human Body

This is primarily a book about the human body and the startling complexity of what is under (and a part of) our skin.Four main areas of our bodies are discussed; the skin which holds us all in, our cells which make up an intrinsic little universe inside each human body, human bones and lastly motion. The insights into the physical human body are enough to make this book great for it shows that whoever or whatever created the human body was unfathomably intelligent.I prefer to believe that God was the designer and so this book causes me to be in awe of God, who I believe to be the creator of mankind. But for an atheist, this book would have to cause him or her to give great awe and respect toward chance. For if chance created our human bodies, it did one heck of a job.Though primarily about the physical human body, the authors are constantly making application to the spiritual body of Christ which, as the Bible tells us, is the entire group of people on earth who have believed in Jesus Christ. The Bible also makes a lot of comparisons between this strange group of people and the human body.Paul (one of the human authors of the Bible) tells us that God sees this group of people (I will refer to it as the church henceforth) like a human body, with many different parts, each part with a special function. In Yancey and Brand's book, they explore the different aspects of the human body and then show how these apply to the church. The analogies are insightful into how we as Christians are to function. In the introduction to the book Yancey writes, "In a sense, metaphorical symbols are the only way for us to grasp spiritual truths, which explains why the Bible uses them so lavishly... the human body expresses spiritual reality so authentically that soon the common stuff of matter will appear more and more like a mere shadow."

Yancey is a great author, and Brand is clearly a great doctor. The book is written as well as Yancey's other books and it is broken down into 25 short chapters. Each chapter has a specific point, and most chapters also offer an analogy about the church, the spiritual body of Christ.I read the book in 25 days, a chapter daily which was an excellent pace to be able to digest the book while still keeping it constantly fresh in my mind.I would recommend the book to any Christian eager to be astounded by the human body and the spiritual analogies that come from the mysteries of our physical bodies.

Product Description

Lindsey R. Swindall examines the historical and political context of acclaimed African American actor Paul Robeson's three portrayals of Shakespeare's Othello in the United Kingdom and the United States. These performances took place in London in 1930, on Broadway in 1943, and in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1959.All three of the productions, when considered together, provide an intriguing glimpse into Robeson's artistry as well as his political activism.

The Politics of Paul Robeson's Othello maintains that Robeson's development into a politically minded artist explicates the broader issue of the role of the African American artist in times of crisis.Robeson (1898-1976) fervently believed that political engagement was an inherent component of the role of the artist in society, and his performances demonstrate this conviction.

In the 1930 production, audiences and critics alike confronted the question: Should a black actor play Othello in an otherwise all-white cast?In the 1943 production on Broadway, Robeson consciously used the role as a form for questioning theater segregation both onstage and in the seats. In 1959, after he had become well known for his leftist views and sympathies with Communism, his performance in a major Stratford-upon-Avon production called into question whether audiences could accept onstage an African American who held radical-and increasingly unpopular-political views.Swindall thoughtfully uses Robeson's Othello performances as a collective lens to analyze the actor and activist's political and intellectual development.

The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. Original texts make the American, French, and Industrial revolutions vividly contemporary.
