Product Description
"Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and advertise!"

These words of fatherly advice helped shape Ted Turner's remarkable life, but they only begin to explain the colorful, energetic, and unique style that has made Ted into one of the most amazing business executives of our time. Along the way - among his numerous accomplishments --Ted became one of the richest men in the world, the largest land owner in the United States, revolutionized the television business with the creation of TBS and CNN, became a champion sailor and winner of the America's Cup, and took home a World Series championship trophy in 1995 as owner of the Atlanta Braves.
An innovative entrepreneur, outspoken nonconformist, and groundbreaking philanthropist, Ted Turner is truly a living legend, and now, for the first time, he reveals his personal story. From his difficult childhood to the successful launch of his media empire to the catastrophic AOL/Time Warner deal, Turner spares no details or feelings and takes the reader along on a wild and sometimes bumpy ride.
You'll also hear Ted's personal take on how we can save the world...share his experiences in the dugout on the day when he appointed himself as manager of the Atlanta Braves....learn how he almost lost his life in the 1979 Fastnet sailing race (but came out the winner)...and discover surprising details about his dealings with Fidel Castro, Mikhail Gorbachev, Jimmy Carter, Bill Gates, Jack Welch, Warren Buffett, and many more of the most influential people of the past half century.
Ted also doesn't shrink from the darker and more intimate details of his life. With his usual frankness, he discusses a childhood of loneliness (he was left at a boarding school by his parents at the tender age of four), and the emotional impact of devastating losses (Ted's beloved sister died at seventeen and his hard-charging father committed suicide when Ted was still in his early twenties). Turner is also forthcoming about his marriages, including the one to Oscar-winning actress, Jane Fonda.
Along the way, Ted's friends, colleagues, and family are equally revealing in their unique "Ted Stories" which are peppered throughout the book. Jane Fonda, especially, provides intriguing insights into Ted's inner drive and character.
In CALL ME TED, you'll hear Ted Turner's distinctive voice on every page. Always forthright, he tells you what makes him tick and what ticks him off, and delivers an honest account of what he's all about. Inspiring and entertaining, CALL ME TED sheds new light on one of the greatest visionaries of our time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book about an amazing life
I'd been aware of Ted Turner for decades, but the book reminded me of his amazing accomplishments: Virtually inventing basic cable, owning the Braves, winning the America's Cup, donating $1 billion to the UN, building his fortune to $10 billion and losing 80% of it in about two years...It's always interesting, giving you insight into the man and to the changes in American business in the second half of the 20th century. To his credit, Turner lets other people weigh in on his narrative. Most of the anecdotes are positive, but every once in awhile someone will say "Ted's recollections of this incident are very different from mine," or ex-wife Jane Fonda saying that he was very needy and refused too much self-analysis... you gotta like him for allowing these things in his book. I read it over a weekend and it was really one of those couldn't-put-it-down experiences. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars started at the bottom.I almost lost everthing
I gained a new respect for the man.Great book hard to put down, well written

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Honest
I highly recommend this book.I read many autobiographies and this one was refreshingly honest. It showed his many strong traits as well as his weaknesses. It was also nice to see he apparerntly gave literary freedom to others who contributed to the book as many times they refuted what he said or mentioned qualities about him that were less than glowing.

I never knew much about him prior to this read but found the writing style engaging and his overall story very entertaining. From his business successes to his saliing successes to his family and marital relationships. A good addition to any home library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yep, he's the mouth of the South
After hearing so much about Ted Turner, especially in our area, it was revealing to read his own story. While many have been critical of this man, he has been outstanding in so many of his endeavors that he deserves praise. He may sound egotistical, but if one does not blow his own horn, it will not get blown. He dared to go where none had gone before especially in the television field and we would certainly not have the developments of today without his daring where others were afraid to venture. This book is recommended to any who would like to know the story of the mouth of the South told from his own point of view. It just might give some ideas of what it takes to get ahead in this cut throat world.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will inspire you to be a better person
Call Me Ted by Ted Turner, an audio book review.
Success did not just fall out of the sky. Dedicated focused self-motivation and ballistic determination using defeats as a springboard to do his very best, Ted Turner's life of do-gooder projects has done more for world harmony than any other.
If there was such a thing as a ten star rating this book would have to have it.

Ted Turner: A Biography tells the story of a man whose wide range of accomplishments have led to a Man of the Year award from Time magazine, induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame, and numerous awards and honorary degrees for humanitarian, philanthropic, and environmental activism.

Ted Turner shows how this remarkable, unpredictable man built the risky purchase of a small Atlanta UHF station into a cable television juggernaut, as well as how Turner transformed the Atlanta Braves from a lowly franchise to one of baseball's most popular and successful teams. The book also highlights other fascinating aspects of Turner's life, including his record-breaking career as a yachtsman, his extraordinary efforts to save the American bison, his headline-making marriage to Jane Fonda, and his sometimes contradictory, often controversial public persona.

"Auletta puts the most human of faces on Turner yet . . . [as] a tycoon who has lost his power." —BusinessWeekTed Turner revolutionized television. Foreseeing cable's potential in its infancy, he parlayed a tiny UHF station in Atlanta into a national superstation, invented CNN, and transformed sports teams and the MGM film library into lucrative programming. Ken Auletta, the most respected media journalist in America, enjoyed unparalleled access to the outspoken and defiant Turner in writing this book (named one of BusinessWeek's Top Ten Books of 2004), capturing the visionary businessman as he built—and lost—his improbable empire. 6 photographs ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Rise and the Fall of the Turner Empire
How does a guy who sells billboards create a media empire? In 2001, author Ken Auletta won a National Magazine Award for his profile of media mogul Ted Turner in `The New Yorker'. In this book, he expands this profile, giving colorful detail about the remarkable life of the colorful, outspoken and complicated business cowboy. Auletta shows that Turner is shocking, abrasive and driven, but he rarely goes more deeply into Turner's motivations than to explain his rebellion against his father. The book chronicles Turner's revolutionary, meteoric creation of a cable empire, including the nation's first cable superstation, and the founding of CNN. It follows Turner as Time Inc., gobbles up his thriving company. Auletta takes a hard look at the personalities that engineered the formation of AOL Time Warner, then the world's biggest media company. Unfortunately, at this point, Auletta becomes preoccupied with the dealmakers and - like AOL TW - places Turner on the back burner. This is just a detour, however, from his compelling portrayal of a corporate superstar who ran his business from his gut. We recommend this fascinating read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Method to his madness
This book provides a short but insightful biography of Ted Turner, the southern businessman known for his business acquisitions, media influence, sports franchises, and Jane Fonda. The book lays out the private and public life of Ted Turner from his birth to his recent donation of $10 billion US to the UN.Included in it are chapters on his schooling, his relationship with his father, his marriage to Jane Fonda, his entry into the media market culminating with CNN, and his later entry into progressive politics.

The book is easy to read and filled with colorful insights into his life.Major financial and business ventures are covered in detail, with analysis of both legal and money aspects. The book is well referenced, drawing info from interviews with Mr. Turner, his friends and family, and secondary sources such as other books and newspaper articles. The book can be read in 1 day or less, and I recommend reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good outline of the heretofore life and career of "Terrible Ted" Turner
Media Man by noted media journalist Ken Auletta gives the casual media novice a fine overview of the personality, passions, and career highlights of Ted Turner, a man who transformed television by making 24-hour cable news a force with which to be reckoned and helping make cable per se almost a household necessity.

An interesting point of his business personality as depicted in this book is that he's not afraid to take risks, yet is supposedly very uncomfortable with debt.So why did he practically mortgage his company in an effort to acquire CBS?The reasoning isn't really fleshed out to a satisfying degree. All we really take away from this account is how he desperately wanted to expand into broadcast network television; not on how such a massive and high-profile acquisition would benefit viewers, shareholders, and employees.Taken in context with the entirety of the book, one concludes that the move was as much ego-driven as Turner would maintain that it was driven to create cost-efficiencies.We also don't get a clear sense of what's behind his fervent anti-unionism and vaunted parsimony, only that they were definite traits.

While getting a taste of his upbringing and subsequent family life is interesting as background, probably the most compelling part of this book is Turner's boardroom battles as part of Time Warner, and later AOL-Time Warner. Here we get a true sense of the personalities and motivations at work, and at odds, within the changing paradigms of corporate media. It's this that made the book worth reading and where Auletta shines as a writer--the kind of writing that made Three Blind Mice so noteworthy and memorable.

At only about 180 pages, it's difficult to recommend this book at full list price, or even Amazon's substantially discounted price, but a used or library copy is definitely worth the time to get to know a little more of this broadcasting and entertainment pioneer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ted the Great!
He was a visionary, wanting to conquer the world like his first hero, Alexander the Great. He conquered the media world with CNN and TNT.My hero was General MacArthur; he too conquered the world with his determination and fighting spirit. His "I shall return" was a war cry and a promise.

I was drawn to this book because I appreciate his sponsoring GODS & GENERALS, a Civil War movie with the South's viewpoint in which there were many generals, but God let us down.He spent $55 million of his own money to produce this masterpiece.

Ted's grandfather was a sharecropper in Mississippi, and yet Ted was born in Cincinnati, Ohio (Nick Clooney's town). His father was a dictator, which caused Ted to have mood swings and a ferocious temper.

When married to Jane Fonda (1991-2001), he secluded himself in an efficiency apartment "penthouse" atop the CNN Center Building in Atlanta.Previously, he had slept in his office. She was window dressing and traveling companion. He owned at that time an 8,000-acre Florida estate, cattle and sheep ranches in Montana, New Mexico and Argentina.Who knows what else?Anyway, he kept her 'in style' and it was observed that she was his "equal" -- she was different. He treated her with a lot of respect. She had been an anti-war activist, movie star, and daughter of Henry Fonda. What else could he ask for? But, every cloud sooner or later bursts and a thunderstorm ensues.

His motto is "You cannot give up hope... The situation is hopeless -- but I might be wrong."He's had an exciting life, but not much luck in the marriage department, like Peter Fonda. Now,he can rest on his laurels.I enjoyed seeing the photo of the young Ted Turner with "no perfect teeth" and in the straw bowler hat.He was a dandy back then.Thank you, TT for GODS AND GENERALS.Thank you, Ken A. for a good bio.He overcame all odds and he is "somebody of stature."

3-0 out of 5 stars A very brief bio...
I picked this book up at a competing brick and mortar book store. I did so mainly to learn why CNN had been dethroned by FoxNews, and also because I had an interest in the man credited with the invention of 24-hour news.

Overall, the book was satisfying. Turner's life is covered rather well, but the details are missing. Every chapter seems more of a summary of something larger than a fact-filled chapter that it is intended to be. Then again, I wasn't expecting a thorough biography given its scant 180 pages.

Regardless, this book will give you a good idea of the man that is Turner. Why did he strive for greatness? Why did he create CNN? How and why did he lose CNN and his fortune? Why is his heart set on world peace? These questions - and others - are neatly answered. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars MORE HYPE THAN SUBSTANCE
This book was an insult to my intelligence.Instead of an objective biography, it comes across as a paid P.R piece written by a Ted Turner sycophant.Don't waste your money on this trash.Too bad there isn't a "zero stars" rating!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Turner is a mad genius. Go Ted!
There is hardly a more colorful person in the history of twentieth century media than Ted Turner. He is mad, visionary, obsessed, gutsy, bi-polar, swash-buckling, touching and very likeable. Ted's CCN inspired me to push ahead with my own small technology company. After touring the early CNN headquarters in Atlanta, I brought back colorful CNN souvenir caps for my staff; and we wore them for a time in our office whenever we brain-stormed. This is a great and detailed account of Ted's adult years from family billboard company executive to AOL Time Warner vice chairman.

You'll rout for this multi-billionaire after reading the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impeccably researched, an amazing man
Ted Turner's life story would make a better movie than many of the old classics he bought the rights to broadcast on his stations. From allegedly giving a sales pitch in the nude (among other things), to wild speeches in hotel lobbies, winning an incredible number of sailing races, and even his own "Alistair Cooke" style film intros, this guy is full of antics.

I was impressed by the depth of research Mr. Bibb brought to this book.I wish their was a little more of Ted quoted in the book, but this is an excellent amount of info on the man's life.

- Julia Wilkinson, author, "My Life at AOL"

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best telling of Ted Turner's unbelievable lifestory

Product Description
"You can't win races without working harder than the other guy."

A blazing ball of contradictions and a genuine original, Ted Turner has been labeled a philanthropist and humanist, a fascist and a racist, a madman and one of the canniest entrepreneurs of all times. Hard-driving and hypercompetitive, he has amassed one of the world's largest personal fortunes, only to give much of it away to liberal causes, including $1 billion to the United Nations.

As "Terrible Ted" has proven time and again, behind his outrageous public persona lies one of the most highly disciplined and creative business minds ever. Beginning with a family billboard advertising company, Turner forged a global media empire, and in the process revolutionized television broadcasting. He pioneered the Superstation concept and founded CNN-the first 24-hour, all-news network-along with more than a half-dozen cable channels. Starting with the Atlanta Braves baseball team, Turner also assembled one of today's most lucrative sports conglomerates.

Ted Turner Speaks brings together hundreds of quotes drawn from a wide array of sources. Hear straight from the maverick's mouth the secrets of his phenomenal success in business, entertainment, and philanthropy. Here is just a sample of what you'll find inside:

"Exposure to defeat is a very important thing. Anyone who doesn't look to get beaten is doing a disservice to himself. "

"I may look like a clown doing back flips at a baseball game, but I'm a very deadly serious person trying to accomplish things just for the satisfaction of accomplishing them."

"I bet you're all wondering what it feels like to be a billionaire. It's disappointing really. . . . I've learned that great wealth isn't nearly as good as average sex."

"I give [the networks] hell because they don't serve the public interest. They look at the viewer the same way a slaughterhouse looks at pigs and cattle. They sell them by the pound to the advertiser-the same way they sell ham hocks and spareribs."

"My desire to excel borders on the unhealthy."

The world listens when TED TURNER Speaks

"Losing is simply learning how to win."

"The worst sin, the ultimate sin for me, in anything, is to be bored."

"I just love it when people say I can't do something. There's nothing that makes me feel better, because all my life people have said I wasn't going to make it."

"When you're little, you have to do crazy things. You just can't copy the big guys.

To succeed you have to be innovative."

"Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell, and advertise."

Product Description
When Robert Edward (Ted)Turner III started out in business, he owned a small billboard company in rural Georgia. What he has eneded up with is the vice-chairmanship of AOL Time Warner throught he sale of his $3 billion empire, which includes CNN, superstation WTBS, Turner Network Television,Turner Classic Movies, the Atlanta Braves, the goodwill Games and MGM Studios.

Risk-taking, careful planning and steely determination are the hallmarks of this brash, outspoken and wildly succesful media mogul.

On the other side of the world his counterpart, Keith Rupert Murdoch, impeccably dressed, ruthless and hungry for success, began with one small Australian newspaper and parlayed it into 125 newspapers and magazines around the glove, the Fox, Inc., motion picture and television conglomerate, and news satellites on four continents.

These two men, controllers of much of the news and entertainment we receive every day, have long traded barbs and vitriolic attacks, creating an intense race for complete domination of the media.Turner and Murdoch are the major players in the media world today - and both have personal lives as complicated as their business dealings.Family squabbles, public divorces, high-profile romances, huge charitable bequests and their appearances at the most exclusive gatherings in the world have made both moguls entertainment news in their own papers and news magazine shows.

This meticulously researched look at media business is also a dual biography. In great detail it delves into both the personal and professional lives of these two outsize figures, their fierce competition, and their enormous effect on American daily life.Amazon.com Review
What do Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch want out of life? Apart from the usual pleasures--love, fortune, good health--they apparently want to control the world's media. And, to judge by this account, each wants the other's head on a platter.

"In another time, they might have dueled on a grassy plain with muskets, or faced each other at high noon at opposite ends of a dusty street, holsters slung low on their hips," writes media/entertainment pundit Hack. Turner and Murdoch have chosen to fight it out, with undisguised venom, in a singularly public venue--Turner through CNN and other networks, Murdoch through Sky and Fox TV, plus a host of magazines and newspapers. Turner espouses liberal views while Murdoch is a hard-line conservative, but both are supreme "controllers of information" and "manipulators of public opinion," according to Hack. Their fight has cost billions of dollars, and it's wounded more than a few bystanders. It has also, as Hack rightly notes, set the tone for the contemporary press, for the worse, sacrificing journalistic integrity in the interest of two "competing political agendas ... until there is one."

Balanced, for the most part, if only because Hack seems to have little affection for either of his subjects, Clash of the Titans is a readable account of a private war between prideful tycoons with long memories. Media buffs will find much of interest in this portrait of "colliding storm fronts," both of whose reach extends far and wide. --Gregory McNamee ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A sensational chronology, rather than biography
From the very start, it is plain the Goldbergs lack any primary sources for their book, since there the exploration of Turner's character and personal decisions tend to be more conjecture than anything else. This book seems to do a good job of listing each of the various public decisions and people in Turner's life, but the important decisions and events are glossed over. For instance: The Goldbergs repeatedly note how Turner micromanaged his companies, only promoted from within, and didn't allow his senior managers and board to make major decisions.Yet, by the time CNN was created, Turner was clearly ignoring his billboard company, and TBS seemed to be cranking along fine. What did Turner think of these people, and what were they doing that made the cash flow possible for Turner to lose so much money while CNN was started up?

The book also has a facination with the chronology of his womanizing. While distaining his extramarital sexual adventures, the Goldbergs seem to do little more than count the notches in Turner's bedpost.Sure they do some pop-psychological analysis, but has no discussion of how his womanizing may have affected other parts of his life, family, and businesses -- especially when the affairs became so blatently open in the 70's and 80's.

Read this book if you want to know what happened in Turner's life up until the First Gulf War (the book was written before Turner's empire was bought by Time Warner), but don't expect a whole lot of insight to his personal life and business genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique study of a unique personality.
The Goldbergs tie Ted Turner into such a tight package that the reader is left with the impression that their impression is one-sided. But his monomorphism seems to naturally follow his fascinating upbringing and the shaping of an incredible domineering father. And then, when one hears post-Citizen Turner interviews and follows the news about Ted, the authors are vindicated. They've got him pegged! Very easily readable ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History of the America's Cup
This book tells the history of the America's Cup sailing race. The beautiful paintings by Tim Thompson capture a key moment for each race. And each race is described in detail by Ranulf Raynor, including boat specifics -- length, beam, sail area, designer, owner, and skipper. There is even a section describing the race courses and locations.

The races painted and described include every America's Cup race from 1851 - 2000, listed below.

1886 Mayflower defeats Galatea

I loved the character sketches of some of the most well-known contenders and participants, from old boat designer Captain Nat Hereshoff himself, to English Sir Thomas Lipton who was one of the most determined challengers with his Shamrock boats and well-loved by even the American competitors.

For anyone who loves sailing and follow the history of the America's Cup, this book is for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lana Gets Her Due
This book is a must for Lana Turner fans and even for people like me who like her but have many others who are bigger favorites. This is a lavishly illustrated paperback that critiques Turner's career up to 1976.Basinger is clearly a fan of Turner's and is never really harsh on any of Turner's performances or even films (with a couple of exceptions from late in her career like THE BIG CUBE); Lana was obviously pleased as she referred to Basinger's comments once or twice in her 1982 autobiography!!It's nice to read something so upbeat on a lady who had often had such turmoil in her life. ...
