5-0 out of 5 stars even better than the first...
Read the first book in this series in one sitting, couldn't put it down...this book was no different, read it all in one afternoon...COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!

It may be cliche to say, but I really feel everything with these characters. I laughed and cried with them. At one point I was actually wiping away tears at the weight of the emotional situation that Alex (The Fey) was burdened with, and amazed that she still managed to get back up and keep fighting.

I would recommend this series to anyone who wants an action packed story that still has the ability to carry an emotional storyline at the same time. There is no stale-soldier talk, but plenty of edge of your seat action!

I will MOST DEFINITELY be impatiently awaiting the release of the third book... I have to know what happens next!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Stand Great summer read!
I did not have a chance to read the first book The Fey and I didn't feel as if I was missing out on a lot of information. This book has enough of a storyline and back story information to make it a good book in it's own right. There were a few spots where the dialogue got confusing and a few other details I found hard to imagine. All in all I really enjoyed this book and honestly couldn't put it down. My poor kids had to spend a Sunday with Papa while I sat totally engrossed in Learning to Stand. I can't wait to download The Fey to my new Sony reader, and I am anxiously anticipating the next book in the series. If you are looking for a summer read this is the book to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Stand
I just finished reading and enjoying another one of Ms Christian's books calledLearning to Stand, the sequel to The Fey (Alex the Fey thriller series).
This book had a lot of characters to keep track of and I found myself having to think to remember who they were or what they had done, especially since a lot of them had nicknames which were used interchangeably with their real names. Aside from that, Learning to Stand was non-stop action, you never knew what was going to happen next but it was always something entertaining and at times a little unbelievable. As I was reading I kept picturing it as a movie and thinking that it would make an excellent action film with Bruce Willis or Hugh Jackman (who doesn't love Hugh Jackman?) I loved that it had a female lead as the unbeatable hero instead of the stereotypical male rescuer (I haven't been able to come up with an actress that seems tough enough to portray her in the movie version, maybe Angelina Jolie?)
If you're looking for a non-stop action adventure with a little bit of romance, and the supernatural thrown in, then this is the book you want to read. I'm just hoping that there is a sequel in the works to help tie up a few loose ends but in the meantime I'm going to read the first book in the series so I can get to know some more about the background of all the characters and the situation they found themselves in and then I might just go back and read Learning to Stand again..... ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good suspense, but flat characters
This story took me through a wonderfully complex plot involving fraud, murder, and revenge. Even though it is billed as a mystery, in some ways, it reads much more like a suspense novel. The plot finally comes to an exciting, action-packed head, as the puzzle pieces finally come into place, and their image is revealed.

Unfortunately, I never got to know any of the main characters, and their personalities felt flat to me. I also don't know what (if anything) the story was trying to tell me. Overall, an unsatisfying read that left me wanting more--not wanting more of the same, but wanting to see more of the hero and heroine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Twists and turns, likeable characters and quick chapters....
Author Debra Purdy Kong's TAXED TO DEATH is the first book I have read by a Canadian author, and what beautiful portraits of Canada did she describe!

I chose the book as it was tax season in the USA and thought "how fitting."Reading about Revenue Canada instead of the IRS was also a first for me, so that took a little getting used to, but not problematic at all.

The given synopsis of the story is as follows:"Revenue Canada auditor, Alex Bellamy, has always dreamed of adventure. During a field audit, he discovers evidence of fraud. When Alex learns that others, including someone inside Revenue Canada, are involved, he persuades his colleague, Andy Gowan, to help him investigate. But Andy is murdered and Alex is forced to turn to Jillian Scott; a lady he's never met and who has her own frightening reasons for refusing to cooperate. Soon, Jillian's fears and Alex's search for a killer embroil them in a bizarre and disturbing nightmare...not everyone will survive."

The main plot of TAXED TO DEATH is filled with several twists and turns, the dynamic between the main characters, Alex and Jillian is likeable and the chapters for the most part are quick reads. The only thing I longed for was a little more description of the characters and the adventure scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suspense and a great setting make this book a winner
Debra Purdy Kong has set her novel in British Columbia and added rich details to give readers a feel for the area. Her main character, Alex Bellamy, is a sympathetic and courageous character who becomes embroiled in a mystery when he and his friend Andy Gowan try to solve a fraud case. After Andy is murdered, Alex is more determined than ever to get to the bottom of a tangled web of fraud and deceit and he enlists the help of Jillian Scott, an employee at the accounting firm he is investigating. To keep Jillian out of danger, he has to first kidnap her, which leads to some interesting situations for the two of them.
Taxed to Death is an enjoyable read loaded with suspense that will keep you reading until the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable British Columbia amateur sleuth tale
In Vancouver, the Revenue Canada Special Investigation (SI) section informs two of the department's auditors Andy Gowen and Alex Baldwin to drop their inquiries into a potential fraud case.Alex tries to persuadeAndy that they need to continue to look into wrong doing by officials ofIce Craft, Lions Import, and the Silby and Morrow Accounting Firm.Alexalso believes that someone in SI is part of the fraud and is abetting thefirms by halting the investigation.

However, that night someonemurders Andy, but makes it seen that the recently promoted victim killedhimself.Alex was also assaulted, but manages to escape.Needing helpinside the accounting firm, Alex kidnaps Jillian Scott, secretary to thesenior partner.Though she thinks he is a lunatic, they begin to shareinformation because Alex knows he must start by identifying the Silby andMorrow partner who condoned the fraudulent deal.

TAXED TO DEATH isan intriguing amateur sleuth tale that fans of regional tales will enjoy. The story line centers on a Canadian fraud case that is under investigationby the government, thereby by providing a different perspective to thereader.Alex is an intriguing character who deserves sequels as hisobsession to go to any extreme (just ask Jillian) to get his "man" willkeep him ticking in future novels. The support cast brings a touch of theregion to the fine plot.Debra Purdy Kong provides the audience with anentertaining mystery that will gain her many fans who will relish theBritish Columbia setting.

Product Description
From the author's preface:

This book is a catalog of the mistakes that I've made while building more than 100 Web sites in the last five years. I wrote it in the hopes that others won't have to repeat those mistakes.

For the manager in charge of a Web publication or service, this book gives you the big picture. It is designed to help you to affirmatively make the high-level decisions that determine whether a site will be manageable or unmanageable, profitable or unprofitable, popular or unpopular, reliable or unreliable.I don't expect you to be down in the trenches typing Oracle SQL queries. But you'll learn enough from this book to decide whether in fact you need a database, whom to hire as the high database priest, and whom to allow anywhere near the database.

For the literate computer scientist, I hope to expose the beautiful possibilities in Web service design. I want to inspire you to believe that this is the most interesting and exciting area in which we can work.

For the working Web designer or programmer, I want to arm you with a new vocabulary and mental framework for building sites. There can be more to life than making a client's bad ideas flesh with PhotoShop and Perl/CGI.

For the users of the world, I document a comprehensive open-source approach to building online communities and show a collaborative Web-based way that we can dig ourselves out of our desktop application morass.

*Includes 200 photographs from Greenspun's highly successful photo.net Web site.
*Presents a general theory of the issues in Web Publishing.Amazon.com Review
This isn't another cookie-recipe approach to planning asuccessful Web site. Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing,by MIT veteran Philip Greenspun, is both broadly conceptual and deeplytechnical, and it assumes that the reader is willing to thinkseriously about the challenge of building a content site, a communitysite, or an e-commerce store before plunging in.

Although heavilyUnix-oriented, it does not set out to proselytize a product, or evensuggest that there is only one way to solve certain technicalchallenges. Rather, it encourages the reader to think about Webcontent and functionality as something designed to help visitorsanswer questions or do something useful. This may sound nebulous, buthis observations about why Web sites go bad are illustrated with manywell-chosen examples.

The core of the book is quitetechnical. Three long sections on publishing, community, ande-commerce architectures are illustrated by the author's data modelsand working open-source systems, so someone with C, SQL, and a goodunderstanding of Internet Protocol (IP) under his or her belt will getthe most out of the discussion. Such technical readers will findnumerous Web addresses and other citations for further technicalinformation. The author also invites readers to use his code ifappropriate.

Although there is a lot of technical meat here,Greenspun dispenses with a dry, technical tone. Throughout, hemanages to speak to the reader in a way that is always interesting andfrequently bemused or ironic. The overall effect is that of a wryprofessor who knows his stuff, has thought about the problems, andisn't about to engage in commercial puffery. --Kathleen Caster ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ten years old but still awesome
Greenspun has always annoyed me as being too arrogant and self-important.Maybe that's true, but I've been reading this book recently, and though some of the technologies are dated (well... except that we're all still using Unix/Linux and SQL, and fighting Microsoft and the banks), the philosophy is still right-on.The writing is sharp and funny. And every technical book in the world should have irrelevant-but-interesting photos of the world scattered through its pages.Sure, you can download a copy for free, but buying the real thing costs just a buck or two now, and it's a book that's fun to sit down with a paper copy of.

5-0 out of 5 stars a breath of fresh air
Philip makes the material in this book freely available on the web and yet a book has never been more deserving of being bought. There are squillions of books on web development and yet here is one written by somebody with a fundamental and far reaching understanding of the state of play and the technology. Why, this guy even knows how to write. Enough said.

5-0 out of 5 stars The lessons will last while the technology changes
I thought I knew a lot about building good web sites, until I started reading this book. The author, Philip Greenspun is a professor of Computer Science at MIT and has built over 100 large-scale sites. The purpose of the book is twofold: to share the author's mistakes and successful strategies so that hopefully you don't have to make the same mistakes, and secondly, to emphasize how best to leverage the collaborative power of the Internet to provide services that were impossible or impractical before. Now I know how to properly engineer an RDBMS-backed site, how to build a personalization system, how to build an online community-based system (correctly), and how to build a content management system--and tie it to the personalization system. I have already incorporated many of the core concepts of the book into my own projects. This is the best web publishing book I have read to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
Philip Greenspun is the creator of photo.net and a very entertaining author as well. This a great book for beginners to get an overview of web publishing, online communities, and databases. Some of the specifics of the book are a little dated but the concepts are not. I often refer back to this book for ideas and inspiration. The online version of this book is free, but the print edition has great glossy pages and is packed with gratuitous, full-color pictures from Philip's image library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Collected (but a bit jumbled) wisdom of a web pundit
This book covers such a wide range of subjects - HTML, web design, SQL, server configuration, e-commerce, accepting credit cards, scalability, futurology, search engines, choosing a database, the nature of buying software, system admin and loads more, all in great depth - that it's almost impossible to characterize the contents. It's also packed full of beautiful, but completely unrelated, photographs; all taken by the author!

Philip Greenspun runs a successful web consultancy with several very busy sites, and seems to have tried to distill all that he has learned into one book. A lot of what he says is very wise, and although I disagree with some of his technology choices, he has thought everything through in great detail. There are quite a few sections which I will re-read and study for my own projects, but many others I will never bother with again. The book's main drawback is its size, which makes it hard to cherry-pick just the bits you need.

If you are looking for ways to use the latest technology to make a web site look cool, this is not the book for you. If you are building or running a site or business with lots of users, and you want to keep them and avoid going crazy in the process, you need this book. And the photos really are good. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars a concerned parent...
In my opinion this book mixes facts with PETA's extremist views. It seems to me like they are trying to create little animal activists. While there is some good information and it's not all extreme, there are also some suggestions that I most certainly do not agree with.I have zero respect for Peta and their extremist ways.Peta is an extremist organization that while possibly having good intentions, go WAY too far in getting their point across.

This book has a quote that flat out says that "eating meat is WRONG".It told my child to protest outside the circus, to call companies over & over again until they do what you want, to harass shop owners who do not believe what you believe, to put notes inside the pockets of fur coats in stores, to boycott the zoos & aquariums.I would support my child if she wanted to go vegan, but I will not allow her to harass establishments that do not agree with her choice. It is wrong to force your opinion on others!

If you are not a fan of PETA or of an extremist's attitude I think you would be better off finding a different book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but could be better
The concept of the book is great as are most of the suggestions. However, my family does not have any pets (as per the parental unit) and my sister and brother were looking for some more practical ways we could help animals.I wish I had known that so many tips involved things you do with your own pet.Not only that, but we don't have neighbors with pets, so it would have been nice to see tips for people in those situations.I feel like the book is written more for the typical suburban family than an inner city family such as mine.I gave the book three stars because I liked the tips, they just were not very practial for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids and their parents
In addition to giving animal advocacy a scientific boost in the nineteenth century, Charles Darwin promoted the notion that compassion for all creatures could be taught - instilled in children with the hope that ensuing generations would come to regard kindness toward animals as part of public consciousness. He may not have called it "humane education," but that's certainly what he had in mind.Likewise, this is the theme of Ingrid Newkirk's "50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals: Fun and Easy Ways to Be a Kind Kid."Originally published in 1991 as "Kids Can Save the Animals!: 101 Easy Things to Do," this renamed edition has been expanded and updated, but its message hasn't changed: we're never too young to learn respect for all life.

No, it doesn't seem Newkirk has cut her suggestions in half; indeed, there are probably hundreds of ideas here to benefit animals, the planet and human health. That's right: it's a vegan guidebook for the younger set.Organized into 50 very short chapters and written in a fun style sure to appeal to its target audience, the book goes beyond teaching kids how to merely be kind to animals, aiming for the higher goal of educating readers in virtually every aspect of vegan living, from cruelty-free diet and dress to speciesist language and animal activism - certainly no surprise coming from the president and co-founder of PETA.It's also chock-o-block with animal facts, jokes, vegan recipes, resources and quotes from celebrities kids will know.

What is likely to engage young readers as much as the lighthearted tone that never talks down to them is how the author incorporates a child's interest in animals with their love of games, toys, riddles and trivia, encouraging imagination and creativity. One chapter, for example, focuses on the virtually universal appeal stickers have for children, suggesting that kids append stickers with animal-rights messages onto letters, bikes, notebooks, skateboards and more. The many topics covered in "50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals" will also likely inspire countless persuasive essays, school projects and class speeches, thus disseminating its message to an even broader audience.

My only quibbles with the book concern domestic rabbits. These animals are very popular with kids, and Newkirk could have taken the opportunity to advise children and their parents to learn more about the misunderstood rabbit before bringing one home from a shelter or having one in class. Also, I was disappointed that she didn't make more of a case for keeping these animals indoors; though she notes that rabbits love to be inside, she describes an ideal backyard hutch, rather than explaining how to keep a bunny in the house, safe and as part of the family.

If we are to have any hope of a world in which animals are treated with compassion and respect, handing down a legacy of kindness is both our best course of action and an ethical obligation. Moreover, in an age when violent perpetrators seem to be getting younger, and such violence is presaged by childhood abuse of animals, raising empathetic children has become more than a parental hope, it's now a societal necessity."50 Awesome Ways Kids Can Help Animals" is a step in the right direction, teaching a generation of kids what being humane is all about.I think Darwin would be proud.

Mark Hawthorne, author of Striking at the Roots: A Practical Guide to Animal Activism

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for kids
I loved this book. I bought it with my 7 year old daughter in mind. She's been trying to go veg for a while and this was written in a format that she can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspires kids to act
I bought this book for my niece, but I haven't given it to her yet because I wanted to read it first and see if I thought it was something she'd like. After reading most of it, I can say wholeheartedly that it is the perfect book for any child who cares about animals.

The book is very easy to read, broken up with short chapters, lots of bulleted facts, quizzes, and boxes. The best thing about the book is that it takes kids' passion for animals and channels it into constructive ways they can help. For example, volunteering at the animal shelter, which is one of the book's suggestions, is a great way for kids to help animals and also helps educate them about important issues like spaying and neutering and being a responsible animal guardian.

The book covers a lot of ground and will probably inspire some animated dinner table conversations, but I think it's a great way to make kids feel like they are active members of society who can make a difference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, easy advice!
First off: no I am not related to Steve! :-)
The book is written in simple and plain words which make it fun and quick to read. (who has time to read a complicated book while raising kids?)
It has helped me a great deal in wording my attempts to stear my children in the right direction. With the hands-on advice he gives, he makes it easy to put the advice into action. This book opened my eyes on the various options I have to help my twins to learn to make good choices and feel a little more responsible for themselves every day in their young lives.
Steve gives a lot of everyday examples on how to implement boundaries, encouragement and consequences. Which then leads to kids who are able to make choices on their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for parents...
Great book!Great for all types of relationships - professional, family, love, etc.I know that this is a short review...but all I have to say is...FANTASTIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for parents of young children.
This book will be most valuable to new parents and parents of young children. Most of us want our children to grow up able to make choices that will keep them safe, healthy and happy. But as Steve points out, withpoignant illustrations, we often, with the best of intentions, fail to helpour children learn to how to make those choices.

Steve's message issimple, teaching children to make smart choices begins with the choicesparents make about how to help their children. Steve's insight andexperience provides a way for parents to act with purpose beyond themoment. His ideas are not revolutionary. They are common sense. What makesthis book most valuable is the rich illustrations and clear context inwhich he presented his ideas. This book will provide parents with a uniqueopportunity to decide how they will help their children learn to makechoices.

I've known Steve professionally for the past few years and havecome to appreciate his insights and sincerity. I recommend Raising Alex toany parents who want to be better equipped for the challenge of parenting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Impact
Before trying to give a review of this book, I would say, it can't be described only experienced. Meaning, the impact this story imprints on a mind is beyond explanation. We have heard of, or seen great men throughout history who stood for our struggle, but to actually be able to get a glimpse into the mind of that man was intense. I read this book in 3 days because it just would not let me put it down. All black men should add this to his collection and understand the essence of God that he possesses which can put any one of us in a position like Brother Malcolm. From promising student, to utter moral confusion, the transformation brought about that only Islam can bring.... If this isn't a 5 star book just because of the story, not even the psychological impact it should have on black men, then no other book gets 5 stars. Brother Malcolm is a true role model because he stood up, PERIOD! When no one else was standing up for the masses of people, this one did. We have to be eternally gratefully for these brothers who tried to wake up the black man under so much pressure from white man society. Without them, where would we be today? Scary thought ain't it?

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor
It arrived on the estimated time but the book's cover was torn and falling apart. And while it was not missing any pages, not having a proper cover made me have to be extra cautious while reading the book. The only reason why I did not return it was because I really needed it for schoolwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest
One of the best books ever written, it is a must read for a young man and any one who loves them

5-0 out of 5 stars heavy for any
with pleasure, i give this book what it deserves, a whopping 5 stars!
earl little's (malcolm) experience, struggles, battles, falls/ups and victories will make a boot-camp look like a child's playground.
his nationalistic views opened the minds of many. when he gave an informative speech, the audience were touched (both friend /foe).
his political tongue brought fear into the hearts of the many apologists who hugged imperialism.

every time that i read any book about malcolm,it reminds me ofpedro albizu campos (1893-1965 (president of the puerto rican nationalistic party)).

like malcolm, campos was a threat towards exploitation. he exposed the ideology, trickery and manipulation the u.s. played on latin america (particularly puerto rico).
to break the rhythm of his continuing growth, he was put into prison. WORST, he was subjected to radiation experiments.

brother malcolm's rebellious strength towards this nation opened many sealed doors.
one of the prime reasons why obama is in office is because of malcolm's eternal political impact.

a great read!

as far as his theological/racist views are concerned, he did an immediate reversal.
when he did pilgrimage, his brain was hit hard by flabbergast.
he did ablution next to white muslims, he prayed, eat, drank and conversed with white muslim brothers. he realized that the true religion of islam does not look at the skin color of anyone.

when he returned, he made it clear to the audience that his hypothalamus was molded by an impostor. malcolm had the intelligence to recognize his fault/weakness and trash it.

i think that many in the rap industry/hood etc, would stop using that self-degrading six letter world if they read this book.

a lucid read for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Bio!
This Biography of Malcolm X is one of the best biographies I've ever read. It really helped me get inside the perspective of one of our country's most powerful and controversial civil rights activists. Amazing to watch his transition from troubled youth, to criminal, to prison inmate, to self-educated racist, to his final transformation in which he embraced all races.

An important read!!!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An average Japanese romance manga. OK for a quick read.
There's nothing terribly spectacular about Harlequin's romance manga (Japanese Graphic Novel) Holding on to Alex. The plot is pretty basic; ex-lovers reunite after difficult trials and find true love. The artwork, by Misao Hoshiai, is good but not spectacular. In all, I would rate this as an average romance manga worth the read if you want to pass the. It should be noted that this manga is intended for ages 16 and up as it does contain adult themes. ...
