The movie, based on Pat Conroy’s book, is Barbra’s second film which she directed since her 1983, Yentl. In her, Prince of Tides, Barbra brought out an unprecedented performance in Nick Nolte. She sings the soundtrack for the first time in over two years. In an interview in 1991, she told Vanity Fair that she had no idea what sound would come out of her mouth.
Coincidentally, this “actress who sings” also released a four CD collection of songs which she has privately recorded, a retrospective set of rare and never before released songs titled, Just for the Record. Several of the recording date back to when Barbra was a thirteen-year-old singer. In a formidable review in The Kirkus Reviews, 2-1-92, here is was said: “Kimbrell died of AIDS as that book went to press, and thus this one has been edited by his sister Cheri... then years in the writing, the two volumes together have no equal as a mid-career summation of the actress-singer’s talents, failings, and successes.”
