5-0 out of 5 stars Good info for the Streep fan
I bought an out-of-print edition of this book and was pleasantly pleasedby the amount of information contained.Unlike most people, I came toMeryl Streep very late in her career and so wasn't around to read all thepress that surrounded her in the late 70s and early 80s.This book is verygenerous in relaying information that Meryl gave in interviews, as well aswhat other actors and critics say about her (Pauline Kael should get alife, or a new prescription for her eyeglasses). There were tons ofpictures as well.Clearly, a more interesting and complex ARTIST than thefashion-conscious eye-candy that passes for serious actresses these days.

3-0 out of 5 stars Meryl's early career.
This book written in 1983 is outdated, but is still interesting to the Streep fan.I enjoyed the several pages of pictures and learning a bit more about her early life. The book could be more detailed-it was onlyabout 123 pages long.If you are looking to complete a Meryl Streepcollection then this is a must have. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Best"
This book gives understanding of the Meryl Streep many don't know. How she started on the stage, tranforming into a hugh talent on the screen and with all that she has managed to be a great mom and wife which is so important to her.She always remembers where she came from. She may be a shinning star but inside she is a real person like the rest of us. I respect her for the choices she has made in her life. This book is a must read...it may be 20 years old but worth the time to read.I really enjoyed it.

2-0 out of 5 stars reluctant biographical subject
The book seems to be a strung together set of anecdotes and information gathered from articles etc already in the public domain with Maychick filling in the blanks with her own conclusions. It does not come across as a biography that had the support or co-operation of the subject herself. Nevertheless it does convey almost a claustrophobic existence for an actress coming to terms with the fame and loss of privacy that her talent had generated and I finished the book feeling very sad for this lady. Twenty plus years on its wonderful to see this woman so much more at ease with herstatus of superstar. The book reminds us that the early days were not easy ones for Meryl Streep personally or professionally despite her prodigious talent, something that is often glossed over these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Returning Awe to Stardom
I'm not sure if "reluctant" is the right summary of Streep's attitude towards being a "superstar". It's something else. But Diana Maychick puts together a pleasantly understandable picture of what makes this great actress: Meryl Streep.

We hear so many "superstars" proclaimed, but from Streep's story it's clear: it is not the parties (though she goes to her share). It is not the beauty (goodness, her blond hair comes from a bottle!). It isn't the single-mindedness: Streep spends a lot of energy on her family life. It isn't necessarily intelligence (Streep seems intelligent enough, but her Vassar speech, quoted in the book, is nothing striking.) Rather, being a star is, first, professionalism, skill, and hard work. But beyond that, someone who elicits -- something so rare in modern life, and in modern box-office hits -- who elicits awe when she appears on screen.

Maychick, retelling Streep's life, teaches us the true and frightening magic of acting: just as sleep brings hypnosis unnoticed into our lives, so does acting make schizophrenia acceptable, even admired. And when done right, makes us freeze, and catch our breath.

3-0 out of 5 stars Concise, to the point biography of Meryl Streep.
This book achieves its aim but does little more than that.It is now a bit out of date but it is still worth a look if you are a fan of Meryl's. ... Read more

The timeless story of the toy rabbit who wanted to be real is brought to life by Oscar® winner Meryl Streep and acclaimed pianist George Winston in this illustrated book and compact disc edition.

Meryl Streep lends her amazingly talented voice to the story of a stuffed bunny who is the Boy's favorite toy but yearns to be Real. The characters come to life through the artistry of her performance, enhanced by the original piano score by celebrated musician George Winston.

Let Rabbit Ears take you on the magical journey from toy chest to Real in this extraordinary version of The Velveteen Rabbit.Amazon.com Review
A stuffed toy rabbit (with real thread whiskers) comes to lifein Margery Williams's timeless tale of the transformative power oflove. Given as a Christmas gift to a young boy, the Velveteen Rabbitlives in the nursery with all of the other toys, waiting for the daywhen the Boy (as he is called) will choose him as a playmate. In time, the shy Rabbit befriends the tattered Skin Horse, the wisest residentof the nursery, who reveals the goal of all nursery toys: to be made"real" through the love of a human. "'Real isn't howyou are made,' said the Skin Horse. 'It's a thing that happens toyou. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to playwith, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.'" Thissentimental classic--perfect for any child who's ever thought thatmaybe, just maybe, his or her toys have feelings--has beencharming children since its first publication in 1922. this is a good length for a bedtime story -- the illustrations are very good too

1-0 out of 5 stars displeased
I received my order in good time, however it was not what they described. The condition of one book (velveteen rabbit)was far worse than described, with pencil markings on the page, and the other book (mother west wind) had an inked inscription on the inside page . Neither of these conditions were mentioned in the description. I tried to contact the sellers via their phone number when I received the books, to alleviate any badfeelings with the purchase, and they never responded. There was an automated phone answer that did not even mention their business name and they never responded to my messages. I left messages on three consecutive days.I will not do business with them again. I had to call Amazon to get the situation rectified.

1-0 out of 5 stars Where's the Book?
I purchased this because the Rabbit Ears series was so good in the past; the originals were sets: a cassette tape with the book.I thought that these were the same set, just with a CD rather than the old fashioned tapes. However, there is no book. The book sets are a great way to encourage reading since young readers can follow along with the book. Also, the pictures are helpful for children just developing the ability to visualize the story. At the very least, the book makes the connection between books and good stories. The books are not available separately either, so I do not intend to purchase Rabbit Ears' products for home or school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beatrix Potter's best stories comes to life!
I love these stories because they are extremely soothing to listen to and also extremely exciting, especially in the story "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" where Peter has to escape from Mr. McGregor's garden.I also love Lyle Mays' music as he gives "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" a jazzy feel to the story.Meryl Streep's narration is extremely soothing as she narrates all three stories, which are "The Tale of Peter Rabbit," "The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher," and "The Tailor of Gloucester."Also, in "The Tailor of Gloucester," the Chieftains performs magnificently as they portray an ancient times rhythm to the story.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beatrix Potter CD

One Great Author. One Great CD.

Here are two magnificent stories in which John Cheever celebrates&#8212with unequaled grace and tenderness&#8212the deepest feelings we have.

As Cheever wrote, "These stories seem at times to be stories of a long-lost world when the city of New York was still filled with a river light, when you heard the Benny Goodman quartets from a radio in the corner stationery store, and when almost everybody wore a hat."

Product Description
Emily Dickinson was born into a prominent New England family. Sociable as a child, she grew increasingly withdrawn, and in later years became known as a recluse. Only seven of her poems were published during her lifetime. After Emily's death in 1886, her sister discovered the bulk of her poems and began publishing them, thus establishing Emily Dickinson as one of the greatest poets of the English language.Amazon.com Review
At the age of 23, Emily Dickinson receded from the socialwhirl of her prominent family into semiseclusion. For the remaining 23years of her life she was happiest when alone and writing. As sherequested in "The Prayer," "Great Spirit, give to me a heaven not solarge as yours, but large enough for me." Read by a group of verytalented celebrity women such as Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, and AlfreWoodard, these pieces lean toward the somber side of Dickinson's work(which, as her fans know, is very somber indeed). Poems include"Shipwreck," "Will There Really Be a Morning?" and "To Know Just HowHe Suffered." (Running time: 45 minutes, 1 cassette)--C.B. Delaney ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What A Disappointment
A CD that contains fifty poems of my favorite poet read in part by perhaps my favorite actress Meryl Streep-- now that's a CD you can tip your hat to-- well not exactly. If there ever was a poet whose works do not need background music while being read, it has to be those of Miss Dickinson. If we have to have music connected with the poems, we can listen to those poems that Aaron Copland and Ned Rorem set to music. The music on this CD had become pretty much a mild aggravation, a little like getting two radio stations on a car radio late at night, when on poem number 33, "The Lonely House," I recognized Robert Schumann's famous "Traumeri"as the music swelled. There is no excuse for this.

The editors have allowed themselves to name some of the poems included here. Anyone who has ever read Dickinson knows that she never named any of her poems and that they are usually identified by first lines. It also would have been convenient for the listener if the words to the poems had been included with the CD. They are not. Neither are we told which reader is reading what poem. (In addition to Ms. Streep, Glenda Jackson, Stephanie Beacham and Sharon Stone read as well. While I recognize Glenda Jackson's voice and Ms. Streep's sometimes, I do not have the faintest idea what either Sharon Stone or Stephanie Beacham's voices sound like. I would gladly have paid more for a better produced CD.

Even all these shortcomings cannot mar the beauty of these rich and wonderful poems with such lines as "the sordid excellence as paradise" if they could just turn off the music! And many of Miss Dickinson's lesser-known poems are included, along with some of those most often anthologized, including my favorite poem "The Bustle in a House."

4-0 out of 5 stars Dickinson was before her time
I've never been into poetry before but Ms Dickinson's poems just blow me away. The readers are perfect for the job - they put emotion and energy into the words making the CD a pleasure to listen to.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Readings, But NOT the Poems Listed on the CD
These witty, sly, despairing performances breathe new life and new perspectives into the poems and the poet. Unfortunately, the poems listed on the back of the CD are NOT the poems you hear on the CD, which makes it difficult to know which actress is reading and exactly what she is reading. It's also impossible to directly access a poem directly --- everything falls under a 45 minute Track 1. Finally, this is Fifty Poems of Emily Dickinson, Volume 3. What happened to Volumes 1 and 2? I saw them once as cassettes, but never as CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect marriage of medium and message
Joan Allen, of all people, emerges as the stand out in this collection of wonderfully nuanced readings of poet Emily Dickinson's deceptively simple poems on nature and human truths. Just terrific!

5-0 out of 5 stars The delivery is as smooth as Emily's poems
If you like Emily Dickenson (and I do) you will love this audio cassette. The readers include Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, and other great female talents. They read the poems with style and a subtility that matches the work of the poet. After hearing the presentations, I came away feeling that the poems were studied by the readers and for the most part understood and delivered accordingly. Thumbs up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Does Streep justice
This is a really good book for the serious Streep fan. It delves into heracting in much more detail than the other biographies, which seem to onlylist her acting awards and leave it at that.I was extremely pleased tosee a discussion of Streep's work in PLENTY, which was so understated andlow-pressure and unlike anything she had done before. It's interesting towatch Streep's performances and discover not only the different charactersshe plays, but the different acting STYLES she seems to have at herdisposal. Her work in PLENTY was certainly different than her fettered, mannered (but equally brilliant and appropriate) interpretation of KarenSilkwood. This kind of attention to her craft really places this book atthe top of the heap.I would love to see an updated version of this bookbecause of all the great performances she has given since then (A CRY INTHE DARK, POSTCARDS, DEATH BECOMES HER, MARVIN'S ROOM, BRIDGES, ONE TRUETHING, etc.) but I realize that excellence doesn't sell books anymore tothe public, so let's all buy the juicy Gwyneth Paltrow bio and find outwhat the new fall fashions are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas story
My family has read this book every Christmas Eve out loud since 1903 - never missed a Christmas. It is one of our family traditions and each child as they have grown up has gotten their own copy to read at their house. I remember my dad reading it, I read it to my kids, and now they are reading it on Christmas Eve too. My grandparents and then me much later even had a striped cat named Simpkin, A wonderful atory with beautiful illustrations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise for "a shot in the dark"
I took a chance when ordering this because there was no review material available.I wanted it for a two year old who is just becoming fascinated with this Christmas poem...thought she'd like to hear someone else's voice.

Rabbit Ears Entertainment is affiliated with Starbucks Foundation's Giving Voice grants.

This is a 5 x 5 book with a total of 29 pages...nicely sewn binding with illustrations by William Cone.I enjoyed them because I'm an artist and I love to see different illustrations, but I will have to illustrate in person, to my 2 yr-old, why Santa looks the way he does in several of the illustrations...his eyes are really wide open and may be a little intimidating to some!

The CD is in the back of the book and has a running time of 45 min.Meryl Streep reads a 4 min. version that I enjoyed, but at times her words are spoken very quickly and wouldn't totally be heard by a "little one", but a nice over-all version.Following that are two carols sung by Meryl Steep (kinda like hearing your favorite aunt sing at the family Christmas sing-along). Also mixed in for an eclectic selection of Christmas music are three carols by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir; three gospel carols by the Edwin Hawkins Singers; and four violin carols by my favorite...Mark O'Connor.

I got a really nice price of $1.00 plus ship....so I was very pleased! ... Read more
