Stewart's CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS, FOURTH EDITION offers a streamlined approach to teaching calculus, focusing on major concepts and supporting those with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. CALCULUS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS is highly regarded because this text offers a balance of theory and conceptual work to satisfy more progressive programs as well as those who are more comfortable teaching in a more traditional fashion. Each title is just one component in a comprehensive calculus course program that carefully integrates and coordinates print, media, and technology products for successful teaching and learning. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great deal
This book was like brand new, and arrived quickly.Saved a lot of money over the used book price in the school bookstore.

2-0 out of 5 stars Low quality calculus text
Calculus texts seem to have lost its rigorous approach to mathematics. The best book on the market to actually learn Real calculus is Calculus Volume I by Tom M. Apostol. James Sewert's book lacks proofs and examples. I think if you're going to pay top dollar for a math book it should have at least tons of examples as well as tons of problems to solve that will actually help the student in his/her studies in more advanced topics in math or science. My Calculus II professor even hated this book due to its lack of quality. I think publishers should try to publish higher quality books over time rather than pretty pictures of the same material to just force the schools to change over and collect the money. I would pick up Apostol's book to accompany this book in the studies of mathematics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
This is a good book if you are just getting started, but some of the information has already been learned the hard way if you have started the dissolution process.I would still recommend it for the value and information you get from reading it.Great Do's and Don'ts sections recap each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Before You Meet An Attorney ...
...you should get this book. It summarizes all of the ups and downs of having an attorney, not having an attorney, getting an expensive attorney, and getting a bad attorney. He speaks to men and women alike about custody, community property and other things that you could do that you may regret forever. Very intelligent man who gives you many ways to dissolve your marriage, or even save it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Leading Judge's Insights into California Divorce
As presiding judge of Silicon Valley's Santa Clara County Family Court, Judge Stewart has made decisions regarding the dissolution of literally thousands of California marriages. He knows what he is talking about, and in this fascinating account he provides the strategies to enable people to come though the process with as little damage to themselves, their children, their spouses, and their finances as possible.Anyone facing divorce in California, or elsewhere, for that matter, should buy this book and study it carefully.

Dispelling eight popular myths such as the popular misconception that the judge hearing a divorce case will have substantial experience with divorce law, Judge Stewart begins by showing how to avoid financial disaster and how to select an attorney. He then goes on to give rare insights into how a judge in fact determines child custody and support matters, spousal support, the fate of the family home, and attorney's fees.He gives practical advice on how to protect oneself physically and emotionally.

In short, Judge Stewart has written an insider's frank, fascinating, and somewhat frightening view into the workings of California divorce courts. The book could well provide the stimulus for a great TV dramatic series.Congratulations to an outstanding, thoughtful judge for providing a superb, practical, account of the workings of family law courts in California.

5-0 out of 5 stars Divorce Handbook for California: How to dissolve your marrig
I found Judge Stewart's Divorce Handbook for California to be not only incredibly thorough, but also quite easy to understand and free of condescending "legalese". In fact, there is an extensive glossary of terms that I could quickly refer to if I was at all unsure of a legal concept. This book is superior to the "do it yourself" variety, because it illustrates a variety of legal options for the reader, including how to hire a competent attorney and yet protect yourself financially. Because divorce is such a complicated and emotional process, it is reassuring to have a clear and comprehensive resource to turn to for info on a variety of legal issues, such as spousal support, division of property, custody, attorneys etc. I enthusiastically recommend this extremely useful book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars When Mahogany Meets Testosterone
Not everyone has the necessary intellect and discipline to be a lawyer. But even among lawyers, there are the elites, and the elites within the elite. Of the half-million practicing law in the early 1980s, James B. Stewart tells us, only 3,000 work in the blue-chip corporate law firms "which occupy the pinnacle of the profession."

These men (women for the most part came later) were set apart by their education (Ivy was good, Harvard Law better), achievement (law review editor also a plus), and sheer dedication.

In the best of the eight essays which make up the book, we meet attorneys at the firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore, who are representing IBM in an anti-trust case and happen to be Stewart's own old firm. Working through weekends and vacations is small beer to these guys, as Stewart writes: "When Sahid scored another triumph by billing 24 hours in a single day, Rolfe - in a move that became the subject of legend in the firm - flew to California, worked on the plane and, by virtue of the change in time zones, managed to bill 27 hours in one day."

Forget about getting home early to pick up your kids. Divorce was a common casualty, and a certain casual cruelty prevailed, unusually harsh even for the American workplace. One of the more easygoing partners at Cravath counsels an associate: "You tell people their work isn't good, even if it's perfect. Find something and make them redo it, or they'll give you anything."

This is hog heaven for any John Grisham enthusiast. The rest of "The Partners" isn't nearly so entertaining. But it's a very illuminating look into the world of high-pressure corporate law in all its varied facets, like public offerings, hostile takeovers, government bailouts, even estate planning. I felt I learned a lot reading each one of the essays, even if it was sometimes work keeping awake, especially as Stewart likes to show off his technical aptitude now and again.

At times, this has the feeling of a college textbook. There's an opening chapter which features efforts by the legal community to help liberate the U.S. embassy personnel held against their will in Iran from 1979-1981, where Stewart seems to forget that the lawyers' work had nothing to do with the hostages' liberation. He also writes up the Chrysler bailout saga from a legal standpoint, then at the end sheepishly admits it was really a political issue at the end. The writing is often dry, and this book is a product of another era almost a whole generation gone by.

But Stewart knows what he writes about, and you will feel the vigor of the law as practiced at its highest level. You may not know these cases from reading about them in the news, media reporting on business law is pretty spotty unless it's Enron. But as Stewart makes clear, in writing about what could have happened if IBM had been broken up by the government, that "the government antitrust case is as close as litigation ever comes to social and economic planning."

In other words, these cases may well decide more about the quality and value of the lives we live here in America than does any single presidential election. So it's nice to have a learned explainer like Stewart to put it all down for you. He has gone on to more-heralded things as a writer since this, his first book, but he was off to a fine start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great debut from James Stewart!
This was James Stewart's first book which portended the talent that would give us "Den of Thieves" and "Blood Sport," among others.Mr. Stewart is a great story teller - he can make a seemingly mundane subject into a real page-turner. The Partners offers fascinating insight into the rarified world of white-shoe New York law firms.Especially interesting is the story of Cravath, Swain and Moore - where attorneys work 10 years without a day of vacation and one attorney gets passed over for partnership because he rode a motorcycle to work.Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't yet read the new James Stewart book about 9/11 but all of the others are very interesting, fair balanced accounts of the chosen subject matter.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting look at law's inner circle
This book, while based on incidents now over two decades old, is an interesting look into the oft-secret world of high-power, blue-chip law firms. Each chapter comprises a case study of a selected firm and its relationship to a corporation through a precis of a particular case.Various kinds of law, from takeovers, to trusts and estates, to litigation, and more, give the book a rounded view.Along with The Paper Chase and L-100, a must read for any prospective law student. ... Product Description

Heart of a Soldier is the extraordinary story of war, love and comradeship, danger and heroism, told by a Pulitzer Prize winner who is one of our finest writers.

When Rick Rescorla got home from Vietnam, he tried to put combat and death behind him, but he never could entirely. From the day he joined the British Army to fight a colonial war in Rhodesia, where he met American Special Forces' officer Dan Hill who would become his best friend, to the day he fell in love with Susan, everything in his remarkable life was preparing him for an act of generosity that would transcend all that went before.

Heart of a Soldier is a story of bravery under fire, of loyalty to one's comrades, of the miracle of finding happiness late in life. Everything about Rick's life came together on September 11. In charge of security for Morgan Stanley, he successfully got all its 2,700 men and women out of the south tower of the World Trade Center. Then, thinking perhaps of soldiers he'd held as they died, as well as the woman he loved, he went back one last time to search for stragglers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enduring and endearing
With the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001 rapidly approaching, I just reread this book. I found it every bit as stunning and moving as the first time I read it eight years ago. This book is the perfect combination of a brilliant subject and superior writing and reporting. The life of Rick Rescorla, from his humble beginnings in Hayle, UK, to his noble end in the World Trade Center, is fascinating, particularly against the backdrop of his close friendship with Dan Hill and his tender end-of-life relationship with his wife Susan.

It was surprising and a little amusing to read the one-star review of Heart of a Soldier by F. Sever (noting that the vast majority of the 35 reviews gave the book five stars, with a few four-star reviews; there were no three- or two-star reviews, and no other one-star). F. Sever thought the book was "thrown together" to capitalize on the events of September 11? He believed that Rescorla's story "could have been written so much better"? Did we read the same book? I can't imagine anyone telling this story any better, and even someone unfamiliar with Stewart's famously meticulous reporting on even the shortest New Yorker story must be able to see from the book's painstakingly recreated dialogue how many people the author had to interview to craft this incredible, moving read. Maybe that's why Time magazine voted Heart of a Soldier its 2002 non-fiction book of the year.

It is also interesting to note that, while Heart of a Soldier has not been made into a film, as many other reviewers suggested, it has achieved a much more amazing fate: composer Christopher Theofanidis has transformed it into an opera by the same title. "Heart of a Soldier," the opera, will premiere in San Francisco on September 10, 2011. What a fitting tribute to Rick Rescorla and to the unparalleled writing skills of James B. Stewart.

5-0 out of 5 stars An American Hero
This book is a great look at a true American hero who saved 2,700 people at the World Trade Center on 9/11/01, but it cuts much deeper. This book recounts Rick Rescorla's life and the events that lead him to the horrific attacks on 9/11.The writer takes you into the jungles of Vietnam where Rick Rescorla was a hero on the battlefield, then details the love story between Rick and his wife Susan and the incredible, yet short time they had together on this Earth.

This book will make you laugh and cry at the same time. It's a very emotional book and it left me speechless at the end.I would STRONGLY recommend this.

5-0 out of 5 stars George Hughes, Author of "Always a Soldier"
I was an Officer Candidate (OCS) Classmate of Rick Rescorla, so it was not a surprise to me when I heard that Rick had given the supreme sacrifice on 9/11 to save the lives of others. The main objective in Vietnam for Rick Rescorla was to take care of his men and bring as many of them safely home as possible. In civilian life, he took his job responsibilities just as seriously as he did in Vietnam and only hoped that he could keep his people safe from harm.

To really get the full impact of Ricks life, one should also read the book "WeWere Soldiers" .Between these two book, one will get a full undestanding as to how brave a man Rick was in combat and civilian life.

I will always honor the memory of my friend and classmate and highly recommend that you read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heart of a soldier
The non fiction biography Heart of a Soldier is an account of a man born in britain who became a US citizen via his involvement as an officer in Viet Nam and his later work as the head of security for Morgan Stanley. He was in charge before and during the 9/11 events. This story is almost to good to be true and the events during the first world trade center bombing and leading up to the second are poignant reminders that this disaster was possibly preventable.

The core of the story is Rick Rescorla's relationship with a fellow soldier and their bonding thru the military.

Every responsible US citizen should read this book.It is the "All quiet on the Western Front" of our age and the story cannot be beat.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book about a great hero
Rick Rescorla's life is a great and inspiring story.Stewart tells it well but the book is somewhat disorganized and padded with too much trivia.Nonetheless, a very rewarding read. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a response to those instructors who feel that calculus textbooks are too big. In writing the book James Stewart asked himself:What is essential for a three-semester calculus course for scientists and engineers? Stewart's ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS offers a concise approach to teaching calculus, focusing on major concepts and supporting those with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS is only 850 pages-two-thirds the size of Stewart's other calculus texts (CALCULUS, Fifth Edition and CALCULUS, EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Fifth Edition)-yet it contains almost all of the same topics. The author achieved this relative brevity mainly by condensing the exposition and by putting some of the features on the website www.StewartCalculus.com. Despite the reduced size of the book, there is still a modern flavor: Conceptual understanding and technology are not neglected, though they are not as prominent as in Stewart's other books. ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS has been written with the same attention to detail, eye for innovation, and meticulous accuracy that have made Stewart's textbooks the best-selling calculus texts in the world. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Compact
Yes, this is as it says, a more compact version of lengthier calculus books. But, because of the shorter length, which gives it the appearance of a basic normal (of a single variable) calculus book, it is more intense. This book is not for the meek, this book requires one to have an intrepid and dauntless mind as you pour your heart and soul into solving every ominous problem. But overall, well written and well designed.Cheers Stuart, cheers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Compliments
Despite it is used, this book is really helpful for me in class. Thanks to the seller for marking some important details.

5-0 out of 5 stars i'm keeping this one
my first calc book was the Ron Larson book (ca 1999), and it's a bit more descriptive in examples here and there, but otherwise there's little difference in the approaches to teaching the material.some of the sections do choose terribly simple examples, but this is basically a condensed text.i got a lot of good knowledge from this book and now that i think about it, i'd rather use this one.hey, at least it's less weight to carry around (paperback intl edition ftw)

if you'd asked me in the middle of chapter 13, i might have had a different opinion.my advice is this: if you need this book for a class and you want some help, get the student solutions manual.this makes up for anything this text lacks... and you can leave it behind when you don't need it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Calc. book a great deal
Seller had a great description.Item arrived as described in a very timely manner.Bundling the SSM with the text was a great thing and it's been really helpful for me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great examples, useful reference sheets
This book was required for my Calculus II course, and would also be used for Calc I (if I had taken it), as well as Calc III.

So far, around 1/3 of the way through the semester, I have found the book to be very helpful.Whenever I had questions about some of the material, I found it was more useful to refer to the book, than my notes. There are 5 tear out reference sheets found in the front/back, which are great for referring back to.Unfortunately, since they are tear-out, this means that if you want them you'll have to buy the book new.It was worth it to me since there were also three classes that would use it.

The formatting of the book is excellent, making it easy to see which points are key, and find formula's when you're simply skimming.I highly recommend this book.It loses the 1 star because the reference sheets are tear-out. ... Read more

Product Description
"When You Wish Upon a Star," "Whistle While You Work," "The Happiest Place on Earth"—these are lyrics indelibly linked to Disney, one of the most admired and best-known companies in the world. So when Roy Disney, chairman of Walt Disney Animation and nephew of founder Walt Disney, abruptly resigned in November 2003 and declared war on chairman and chief executive Michael Eisner, he sent shock waves through the entertainment industry, corporate boardrooms, theme parks, and living rooms around the world—everywhere Disney does business and its products are cherished.

DisneyWar is the breathtaking, dramatic inside story of what drove America’s best-known entertainment company to civil war, told by one of our most acclaimed writers and reporters.

Drawing on unprecedented access to both Eisner and Roy Disney, current and former Disney executives and board members, as well as thousands of pages of never-before-seen letters, memos, transcripts, and other documents, James B. Stewart gets to the bottom of mysteries that have enveloped Disney for years: What really caused the rupture with studio chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, a man who once regarded Eisner as a father but who became his fiercest rival? How could Eisner have so misjudged Michael Ovitz, a man who was not only "the most powerful man in Hollywood" but also his friend, whom he appointed as Disney president and immediately wanted to fire? What caused the break between Eisner and Pixar chairman Steve Jobs, and why did Pixar abruptly abandon its partnership with Disney? Why did Eisner so mistrust Roy Disney that he assigned Disney company executives to spy on him? How did Eisner control the Disney board for so long, and what really happened in the fateful board meeting in September 2004, when Eisner played his last cards?

Here, too, is the creative process that lies at the heart of Disney—from the making of The Lion King to Pirates of the Caribbean. Even as the executive suite has been engulfed in turmoil, Disney has worked—and sometimes clashed—with a glittering array of stars, directors, designers, artists, and producers, many of whom tell their stories here for the first time.

Stewart describes how Eisner lost his chairmanship and why he felt obliged to resign as CEO, effective 2006. No other book so thoroughly penetrates the secretive world of the corporate boardroom. DisneyWar is an enthralling tale of one of America’s most powerful media and entertainment companies, the people who control it, and those trying to overthrow them.

DisneyWar is an epic achievement. It tells a story that—in its sudden twists, vivid, larger-than-life characters, and thrilling climax—might itself have been the subject of a Disney animated classic—except that it’s all true.Amazon.com Review
James Stewart has done it again. The author of the mega-bestselling Den of Thieves, about the 1980s insider-trading scandals on Wall Street, and Bloodsport, the 1990s tale of the Clintons' Whitewater affair, now gives us another epic story, this one culminating in late 2004. With DisneyWar, Stewart turns his investigative and storytelling lens on Michael Eisner and the corporate intrigue which has overtaken the Walt Disney Company in the last decade. He explains how this once-proud institution, long one of America's most admired and well-known businesses, has stumbled in recent years amid a disastrous swirl of egos, personalities, and bad business decisions.

Like one of the roller coasters at DisneyLand, Stewart's epic book takes readers through a wild up-and-down ride as it describes Eisner's regime as CEO. The tale begins with Eisner's early successes rejuvenating Disney's live-action movie franchise and theme parks, the kickoff of the modern animation era with blockbuster hits like The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast, and the cultivation of a highly talented cadre of lieutenants, which reads like a Who's Who of executive talent now dispersed across the Fortune 500: Stephen Bollenbach (Hilton Hotels), Steve Burke (Comcast), Geraldine Laybourne (Oxygen Media), Richard Nanula (Amgen), Joe Roth (Revolution Studios), and so on. Stewart makes clear that Eisner has had a major eye for strong creative content himself, both as a young executive in his pre-Disney years at ABC and at Paramount Pictures and more recently in building partnerships like Disney's extremely lucrative one with Pixar.

Just as he credits Eisner for various Disney successes, though, Stewart assigns blame for the failures, too. The thoroughly researched 534 pages of DisneyWar make clear that his overall verdict on the CEO is negative. Much of the book describes detailed and specific interactions between Eisner and his rivals. Readers interested in the entertainment industry or in the personalities which drive it will not be disappointed. The blow-by-blow accounts of Eisner's feuds with Dreamworks SKG founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was his chief aide for nearly two decades, and Michael Ovitz, the superagent from CAA who had been friends with Eisner for even longer than that, are amazingly detailed. They show Eisner to be creative, funny, and charming when he wants to be--and devious, dishonest, and horribly Machiavellian when he doesn't.

Though dispassionate in his writing, Stewart assembles a withering portrait of Eisner as a grasping, self-centered, manipulative, and ultimately self-destructive executive. He shows how the Disney CEO has consistently undercut his potential successors within the company, in many cases drawing on Eisner's own writings and conversations with board members. He shows how Eisner's erratic attitude towards paying severance to former employees--in some cases being overly stubborn (as with Katzenberg, to whom he had a chance to close out for $90 million, but whom Disney ended up paying $280 million) and in others being shockingly lenient (as with Ovitz, who received a $140 million golden parachute after one relatively ineffective year at the company). He shows the overreach of grandiose projects like Euro Disney, and the missed opportunities like Lord of the Rings, Sopranos, and Survivor, on all of which Disney passed.

In the end, Stewart has returned with DisneyWar to what he does best: drilling into a murky and complex subject, capturing an enormous amount of detail through personal interviews, emails, memos, court records, and other data sources, and then weaving together a rich tapestry of people and events to bring others to the same conclusions he has clearly reached himself. Though some readers might tire of the reams of detail Stewart offers--at certain points, the book reads like a gossip rag, with intricate he-said, she-said accounts of individual meetings--most will enjoy it. Beyond the entertainment value, this book also has serious value to students of corporate governance, as it presents a scathing portrait of Disney's captive board of directors and shows what happens with the lack of proper CEO oversight. --Peter Han ... 5-0 out of 5 stars D'Eisner
Great book about Eisner's huburis. The best was when he said his family name was D'Eisner, or when pronounced in French, Dis-nay.

5-0 out of 5 stars A look behind the magic, what almost wasn't and what was
This is a fast read and excellent view into what was and wasn't, what almost happened and who got fired along the way. This is perfect for anyone interested in the inner-workings of the Disney Company between the 1980s and 2003, and a look at what happened during the infamous stock holder revolt.

The writting is fabulous, and I highly commend the research effort put into this book. It is non-fiction, and definately not your "typical Disney story."

I must read for any Disney fan or investor!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd cross the street to avoid Michael Eisner
Holy smoke! The stones on this guy!

James Stewart's "Disney War" makes it ABUNDANTLY clear that Michael Eisner was at times a talented and creative executive but also a severely flawed human being. No amount of business acumen or success can compensate for his pettiness or his dangerous and odd mixture of arrogance, manipulation, hubris, self-entitlement, insecurity, passive-aggressive behavior, disloyalty, or self-delusion. This man is Shakespearean and Dickensian in scope. He is Ebeneezer Scrooge, Richard III, King Lear, and Henry VIII all wrapped up in one huge and distasteful sociopath of a package.

If you ever get the chance to work under Michael Eisner, run the other way as fast as you can!

Great book, Stewart. Loved reading it and appreciate the abdominal workout it gave me from having to bend down and repeatedly lift my jaw up off the floor time and time again after learning of Eisner's numerous and continuous and seemingly never-ending line of boneheaded moves, lack of social graces and personal ethics, and disastrous business relationship strategies.

I didn't think people like Eisner were even possible--SURELY monsters like him would have been weeded out long before they could reach that level of embarrassment to the company and the industry.I guess not.Eisner is the poster boy for every evil and shallow show business cliche you've ever heard.I'm still not convinced he was a real flesh-and-blood human being.I think he was built in a lab from parts of famous movie monsters and the world's most hated and feared despots and dictators.

This book is a fascinating read about the kind of business executive that nightmares are made of.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not "show friends" it's "show business"
A wonderful description of life at the top of the corporation.Details many of the things that all CEOs have to worry about and grapple with on a day to day basis. This book re-ignited a passion for films that has been stagnant for quite some time, not just Disney, but film in general and the creative process that creates the fantasy world to which we all seek to escape.A great read!

I ordered this book on audio CD from alibris. The audio book is on 20 cd's.I received cd's 11 thru 20 but NOT 1-10.When I contacted Alibris, they said they could not look for the missing cd's and they issued refund.I didn't want refund...I wanted the first half of the book...they couldn't be bothered...they just wanted to be done with me. Very Poor Customer Service...hence the 2 star rating...it would be a one star rating but they did issue credit for my purchase. I would look elsewhere for purchasing your used books and audio cd's! ... Read more

It's a great book for you to pass your calculus class, but it only provide odd solutions.
However, this book is better than the answer in the back of your calculus book.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as a professor.
After having completed Calculus I, I found that there were still some gaps in my knowledge, some unanswered questions about some of the homework problems in the textbook. I consider this solutions manual one of the best investments I've ever made, for the money. It's like having a professor or tutor handy whenever you can't figure out how to do a problem. It cleared up the unanswered questions I had from Calculus I, and will be an invaluable aid for upcoming classes. I highly recommend it.

This is a great book for College Calculus 3. If your class requires the "Early Transcendentals" edition, this is essentially the same book. It has the exact same amount of chapters and the exact same questions so don't fret, this book will work for your class. This book does not have back cover at all. It is very difficult to hold it in hands. It was mentioned in the description as a minor damage to back cover which is totally in-accurate. This book can not be used without making some kind of fix. The seller should have thought about it before putting it on for sale. There is no option to return the book.
I would not buy any book in future from people with no rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality
Great service. The book was in better condition than those sold at a campus store and $30 less! Awesome.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another College Textbook
I have found that it is much cheaper to buy in two volumes, which is a plus as well as it being a little less weight to carry. As far as a book goes, it is merely another college textbook with dry writing that I have found mostly useful when I skip to formulas and homework problems. The examples, however, tend to be fairly confusing and not very well explained. Unless you are EXTREMELY self motivated, which I suppose you would have to be to teach yourself calculus, I would only suggest buying to coincide with a course.

1-0 out of 5 stars BAD TEXTBOOK
Besides the fact that going through the textbook actually feels a bit like sifting through word-vomit about math, there are also plenty of other faults with which Single Variable Calculus tries to take up as much of your time as possible before teaching you anything !

1. The examples are often too simple when compared to the second half of the problems for each chapter.
2. The examples for each chapter often do not explain how to do all the different types of problems that come up in the problems sets.
3. As if that isn't enough to sufficiently confuse you, let's not forget the most major fault with the book - about half the time the examples just randomly skip steps without even indicating it, basically punching holes in any life-boats you might have still been clinging to.

What Stewart does succeed in doing is proving the stereotypical image of a "math person" right in that he can certainly solve highly complex math problems, but cannot pass on the knowledge of HOW to do so to save his life. But, to be fair, if you actually manage to go through the word vomit, you will note that it is not for lack of trying.

1-0 out of 5 stars A True Review
Please, ignore the five star ratings for this book. They should be directed at Amazon or other distributors, and have no bearing on the content of this text. Instead, they relate to the timely and safe manner in which the text was transported. I have worked with this text for a little over a year now, in two calculus courses. I sincerely agree with the reviews by individuals who have ACTUALLY read the text, instead of simply buying it and staring at the package. This book is atrocious. The examples are far from helpful. An instance: In the chapter on integrals the book uses an example to teach the definition of the integral with an ESTIMATION. It estimates the area of a portion of the area under the curve to be a certain number and then calculates this along with other information to come to it's answer. If I am learning something, I don't want to be taught through estimates, I want clear concise directions that can be repeated without deviation or error. As well, only a single problem is shown, with very little true explanation. More detailed explanation of at least three different problems per topic would be preferable, so a student can then gain a more confident and clearunderstanding. Similar examples of this book's tedious and unclearnature are common within it's pages. I hope in future editions these changes are made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The book was just as described in the advertisement and arrived before the due date. Great service

2-0 out of 5 stars Single Variable Calculus Early Transcendentals

1-0 out of 5 stars Infinate Incomprihensibility
The problem with this book is their explanations: they often explain nothing, and their example problems, which are often ridiculously simple while the accompanying problems are ridiculously complex and difficult, leaving you with little idea of how to solve the problem or even what they want you too accomplish. Add in the assumption factor: the book references equations or mathematical concepts not in the book and simply 'assumes' you have the knowledge, and the shortcut factor (examples sometimes condense several steps into one line, leaving no way to separate what did what) and you have a bad way to learn math.

Here's the biggest clue. I often resort to Google to learn the math when attempting the assignments. If I use other sources to learn the math, why should I (or you) ever buy this book?

Product Description
As the son of Mary Queen of Scots, born into her 'bloody nest,' James had the most precarious of childhoods.Even before his birth, his life was threatened: it was rumored that his father, Henry, had tried to make the pregnant Mary miscarraige by forcing her to witness the assasination of her supposed lover, David Riccio. By the time James was a one-year-old, Henry was murdered, possibly with the connivance of his mother, Mary was in exile in England and he was King of Scotland. By the age of five, he had experienced three different regents as the ancient dynasties of Scotland battled for power and made him a virtual prisoner in Stirling Castle. In fact, James did not set foot outside the confines of Stirling until he was eleven, when he took control of the country. But even with power in his hands, he would never feel safe. For the rest of his life, he could be caught up in bitter struggles between the warring political and religious factions who fought for control over his mind and body.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The wisest fool in Christendom"
Poor James. That is how his contemporary Sir Anthony Weldon labeled him and it stuck, virtually forever. James, however, was no fool.

James I will never be as popular among English history buffs as the Tudors, and of course, he is totally over- shadowed and up-staged by his mother, Mary Queen of Scots. Yet this little known and understood Stuart king deserves more than the cursory glance he usually gets. He was a decent man, much more decent than Henry VIII, and unlike Henry capable of loyalty even if that loyalty was misplaced- ie to many male favorites. Alan Stewart's biography is sympathetic, balanced and well-written. James is not eulogized but he is not condemned, either but fleshed out in a fair manner.

Two facts are generally known about James: He was a homosexual (although his supporters vehemently deny this) and the King James version of the Bible, still in use today, was translated under his reign. But his tenure was a time ofrelative peace when he combined England and Scotland under one crown and modern historians are beginning to re-evaluate him as a man and as a king.

It was rather a miracle that James was able to grow up at all under one regent after another amid the incessant squabbling of the Scottish nobles. He was physically disabled in some way concerning his legs, often mentioned in the writings of his times but nobody seems to know what the affliction was, except that apparently he walked in a peculiar manner. He never saw his mother after he was about six months old and sources vary as to his reaction to her gruesome death, some saying that he was sorely distressed, others that he climbed right in the saddle when he heard the news and went hunting. When Elizabeth died in 1603 and he became King James I of England and Scotland, he had a velvet black shroud thrown over Mary's tomb at Peterborough and ten years after that had her remains exhumed and placed in a magnificent mausoleum in Westminster Abbey where she lies today opposite Elizabeth, her arch enemy.(James paid for Elizabeth's tomb, too, but Mary's is bigger).

James was said to be fearful of bloodshed and war, if not an outright coward, and he blamed his own fears on trauma he felt when he was still in his mother's womb! Since he was a fetus when Rizzio was stabbed to death right in front of Mary (and unavoidably he was present) the explanation perhaps isn't too far fetched!

As a personality James was virtually the antithesis of his predecessor Elizabeth, who loved crowds and the adulation she got from them and played to her audience. James hated crowds, avoiding them he could or if obliged to face groups did so with a scowl. He left a lot of the governing of the nation to his counselors and fled to the country where he spent most of his time hunting or with his nose in a book and writing books as well. His book "Basilikon Doron", penned in 1599, sold an incredible 16,000 copies, one of the "runaway best sellers of the Renaissance."

Flourishing under the reign of James I were William Shakespeare, John Donne, Ben Jonson and Sir Francis Bacon, the Golden Age of Elizabethan literature still alive and well

James' first male love was Esme Stuart, his cousin, who came to Scotland from France when James was about thirteen. The pattern of male favorites continued throughout James' life but he was happily married to Anna of Denmark and had seven children by her. His eldest son, Henry, was popular and talented and probably would have made a fine future king but he suddenly died as a teenager. The next son, Charles, inherited the throne, and like his father believed in the divine right of kings. That belief cost Charles his head.

During the last year of James' life, James' current favorite, the Duke of Buckingham, consolidated his control over Prince Charles to ensure his own future; however, Charles actually liked the Duke even though the Duke was much despised throughout the realm. The King was often seriously ill, leaving him increasingly feeble and rarely able to visit London. He died rather horribly:

"On the night of Friday 25th {1625] a stroke loosened the king's face muscles, so that his jaw dropped. His swollen tongue, combined with huge quantities of phlegm, constantly threatened to suffocate him: it was said his tongue was swollen so big in his mouth, that either he could not speak at all, or not be understood. He was also afflicted with severe dysentery, suffering, it is reported in filth and misery."

Alan Stewart's biography is detailed, turgid, and impeccably researched. It is a fine portrayal of the Jacobean age. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Book On A Forgotten King
It is an unfortunate fact of history that James VI and I has largely been passed over far too often when it comes to biographies.Worse yet, he has been greatly ignored by the film industry, and precious little is ever heard about him on TV as well. What mini-series has ever been made of his life and reign? Most people simply think of him as the son of Mary, Queen of Scots; a man who succeeded Elizabeth I on the throne and finally united the two kingdoms of England and Scotland.

In reading this book, I discovered why.Despite his obsession with witches (really not that uncommon for his time), he was actually a decent king who despised the thought of war and the high cost involved in waging battles on foreign soil.

The reasons for his reticence to be a warmonger may have been an abhorrence of violence in general, born of his early years filled with attempts at kidnapping and watching the rival Scottish Lords viciously fight over him in front of his young eyes.Seeing a man stomped to death just outside his bedroom seemed to have left a lasting impression on James, and intensified his hatred of fighting in any form.

Having been born with physical deformities, especially his malformed legs, he found great pleasure in hunting on horseback for hours at a time. This pursuit gave him the freedom and sense of normality that his stilted walk (he would often lean on others for support) could never provide. All in all, one comes to see James as a man one could relate to; an individual whose human side showed a peaceful, gentle character that had been sorely lacking in many of his predecessors.

Besides having an active part in producing the King James Version of the Bible, the one aspect of his reign was his self-proclaimed role as "peacemaker".And James certainly lived up to the title.By keeping the newly formed United Kingdom relatively free of costly wars, his reign created an equilibrium and sense of peace that was much appreciated by his subjects (and his Treasury).

Although his homosexual inclinations brought the usual problems associated with any man who showers money, gifts and lands on his favorites, it might be said that at least in choosing young men as bosom companions, he did not leave behind a string of bastard children.Indeed, his marriage with Anne of Denmark seemed quite amicable and she herself created no scandals during the reign of her husband. She truly did seem to accept him as he was, a fact that only stabilized and strengthened their relationship.

In summation, a king who was able to keep his country out of the often mad conflagrations going on across the channel, coupled with a relatively unsensational life at home, does not make for high drama. And therein lies what, in my opinion, is the greatness of his reign.

Perhaps if more works like "The Cradle King" are written, people will come to appreciate this king who has, unfortunately, all too often ends up as just a footnote in the wonderful and engrossing history of Great Britain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cradle King review
I hadn't read much about James I so decided I wanted to find a book that covered his early childhood as much as his adult life as a king, given the turbulent and traumatic childhood he experienced. This work helped me understand how his personality developed in that environment and shaped who he became and the legacy he left his son, Charles I.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Scottish take over
Often books about European royalty are so complex that the reader needs to have a finger forever on family trees as he/she wades though the chapters. This book about a critical leader in our Anglo-Saxon past is very easy to read and provides some important new information and highlights the critical bonds between England and Scotland at the end of the Tudor era.I highly recommend this very readable book

4-0 out of 5 stars The first ruler of Britain, almost a capable plotter
What machinations! The court of the Tudors and Stuarts in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century were not easy places to navigate. For a young boy left by his mother to the in-fighting of Lairds and nobles it was an even more difficult place. It would be considered tragic now, that a boy like James should be used as a pawn for others gains, but for his time it was simply a game, and a game with huge wins and losses.

Alan Stewarts book is almost very very good but I felt it fell short on many points. It is a highly readable work, and it covers some excellent matieral I had never read about before - the plotting and constant scheming of the courts.
