what solutions?
There is no reason not to have all the solutions for Stewarts 6e Calculus book, but that is not what we get: we get half.
There is no reason not to have the solutions we get not to be worked out fully--how do you know what steps are omitted and which are included?You don't, unless you don't need this book.
Other than that it can help in a pinch as long as you don't count on it.This book is part of the Stewart Calculus Industry where you go from the simplest example problems to the ailen world of "exercises".I came for calculus, not his industry nor his ailen worlds--and yes, I speak French.

Decent, but more practice problems would help
When it comes to math, I like a lot of practice problems to build a foundation of new material and work into the more challenging problems. This book does not do that.It does present a lot of information in each section but I would like it much more if it had more practice problems to really let the student get familiar with the new material before presenting more difficult problems.

Needed for Calculus III
I have not read through this book thoroughly, but it has been good so far.The examples are understandable and there is plenty of practice problems for nailing the major concepts.

Calc 3 text book
I would like to be the first person to state that this book is specifically the last 6 chapters of the book, chapters 8-13. It covers the very end of Calc 2 and all of Calc 3. If you want a book that covers all three courses, or just calc 1 and 2, you must buy the others. The # of pages listed here are only like that becuase the book goes up through 1045. This book starts however at chapter 8 like I said. The Calc 1 and 2 book is this: 0495559725. And the Calc 1, 2 and 3 book which is much more money is 0495557420. Please don't make the mistake and buy the wrong book and blame the seller.

When using this book, I personally only used it for its examples and a portable edition. This book unlike other versions of calculus text books does not have an answer guide that you can buy, you must arrange it through the company website which is a real big pain. When doing Calc 3, you want to do A LOT of extra problems, and it helps to have ALL the answers neatly worked out for you. I would actually suggst that you wait until you get to know your teacher and see if they use this book hardcore in class, and assign problems directly from the text, otherwise, it's a waste of your money, since there are plenty of free calculus resources on the internet.

quite good for a math book
Before reviewing i want to make 1 thing clear: THIS IS A 2 PART BOOK. They had it going for ~300 at the bookstore in my university. I found it on amazon for a much cheaper price and bought it right away. But this version was only the second part, which would be used in the 2nd semester of my math class. Of course the one in the bookstore was both parts combined. So i had to buy the Single Variable version of this as well. Pretty lame that they would split up the book like this, but maybe i just wasnt careful enough. The least they could do is make the cover picture different for each book though, not just a SV and MV difference on the top left.
Anyways, the text itself is great. There are plenty of examples that are throughly shown and explained in beginning of the chapters. I'd say i am average at best in math and i followed how they did most of them with ease. The text quality is great, clear graphics and font.
on another note, as with most textbooks, the questions are generally recycled. My friend had another version, i believe it was stewart calculus 5th edition. A good chunk of the questions were in both books, just numbered differently. So maybe you could buy a cheaper version and just compare questions with a close friend to find them in your book.

Excellent study tool
When you're unsure how to go about a problem, this book goes through attaining the answer in a step by step format. It's a great study tool and I recommend it to all Calculus students.

Not a good solutions manual!!
As with most "official" solutions manuals, this one is pretty much junk. It contains "full" solutions to only odd problems, and those "full" solutions generally skip steps, assume that you've already mastered the concepts (which you obviously haven't at this level), and on occasion, don't even solve problems the way the book recommends. Instead of purchasing a solutions manual for this Calculus book, I'd just recommend using Cramster. For free they've got AWESOME solutions to all odds which clearly explain what's going on, and for ten bucks a month they got you covered on all the evens as well. For some reason this site is not as well-known as it should be, but save yourself some money and headaches and check it out before buying crappy solutions manuals. Just use your favorite search engine for Cramster, it's one decision you won't regret!

Use wisely
When I was reading reviews for this several people complained that the problems and sections do not match up correctly. This is true. The math book this is based on has several versions and things keep getting moved around. The farther you get along in the book, the more that becomes apparent.

But. By checking the index, you can always find the section you need. And by scanning up and down the list of problems they solve, I was usually able to find a problem close enough to what stumped me to help me figure it out. If you want someone to do your thinking for you, don't bother. If you want an extra boost in understanding without the help of extra tutoring, this is perfect.

Does not match the Textbook
This solution book does not match the textbook they sell in the online and it does not include the problems but only have textbook's page and problem's number that it is totally useless. Only if you have matching textbook then you can buy it otherwise do not buy it. I returned it right after I received it three weeks ago but I still did not get credit. Again, Do not buy it unless you are absolutely sure you have matching textbook.

Great Investment
I recommend this book as a quick review of Trig or as extra help along with the textbook for those learning Trig.This book impressed me because it is straightforward and easy to follow.I am terrible at math and I always make dumb mistakes, but this book has all the answers worked out.I used to sit there for hours trying to figure out why I was getting all the answers wrong when I thought I understood how to do the problems.After I bought this book, I was able to see what my mistakes were and correct them within seconds of doing the problem.You might still need help from a person occasionally if you're confused about something in the book, but for the most part this book is better than a tutor because it is more efficient.Instead of waiting for someone else to figure out what your mistakes are, you can just compare your work to the book's!

I had this textbook for my precalculus class, almost never attended the clas, but got all A's on the test and A final grade -- all thanks to this book. You literally don't need a teacher, or any other sources, even if you not a science person, you will be able to understand the concepts. It has a lot of sample problems solved in each section, and then at the end of each section, the problems are listed from very simple to moderate to high difficulty. awesome guide, two books in one!

Physician Serial Killer
This book chronicles the life of Michael Swango from his childhood until the present.

Swango, later to become Dr. Swango is raised in a home without a father.His father, a military man, prefers duty in Viet Nam than opportunity to stay at home.His mother, though doting upon Swango, is not one to express emotional warmth.Oddly she seems to pay undue attention to his achievements, leading him emotionally starved but unduly attached to his outward achievements.

Swango is at least outwardly, the All American success story.Good looking, he is a gifted student and sent to a private school, while his brothers are left to attend public schools.He later enters Medical School.

But Swango is left emotionally scarred.He has a compulsive need to be in "control".Unlike a would-be cop or would-be business executive, Swango finds the ultimate control as a physician - perfectly in position to be in control of people's lives.The ultimate control is over life and death for Swango.By using poisons and various medications, he controls the fate of his victims by deciding who will live or die by unknowingly receiving intravenous doses of well, God knows what.

But Dr. Swango for all outward appearances, is a shining success story, easily making a good impression on those who meet him, but not in a position to truly know him.He finishes medical school and secures a prestigious residency.

Problems with Swango become evident early on.But such signs went largely unnoticed.That is to the powers that be.His peers couldn't help but see his peculiar preferences to be involved in life and death situations.As medical student he earns the nick name "Double O" Swango.Patients seem to mysteriously die shortly after contact with Swango.

As evidence mounts that there is something desperately wrong with Dr. Swango, his supervising physicians discount the reports of his odd behavior by nursing students and patients.One of the most striking aspects of his story is the reaction of the faculty of the prestigious universities he works in.Being more concerned for their own reputations and legal liability they fail to take action that ensures the safety of the people they are supposed to serve.

That perhaps the theme of the book: the medial community's reaction is naive at best and recklessly irresponsible at worst.But take into consideration the fact that Swango is the only known physician serial killer known in the past 100 or more years.Was the medical community prepared to see what is a rare occurrence in history? Perhaps the larger issue is just how well does the medical community police itself?Are they equipped to do it and prepared to take action when they need to?The book leaves these as questions to be answered by the reader though the author seems justifiably outraged.

Well-written True Crime
I recommend true-crime books about serial killers, not because I recommend serial killing, but because these books teach me about people. Not just about the killers, but also about the victims and other players in the drama. And since true crime is nonfiction, the plot and characters are credible.

In Blind Eye, James B. Stewart does as good a job as Ann Rule, who is the preeminent author of true crime. As you might expect from a Pulitzer winner, Stewart's writing style is professionally competent, easy to read, and flows smoothly. He dives deeply into the story, researching it thoroughly even though some of the primary characters refused to talk with him. I guess they were ashamed of having associated with Michael Swango without having understood what he was up to.

The story is scary on two accounts. One is because of its subject matter: that of a physician who takes advantage of access to patients by injecting them with poison. Unless you are suicidal, you would not want to visit one of his hospitals. And he served at a number of hospitals, which brings up the second scary thing. As early as his days in medical school, people were aware of his strange behavior and of deaths connected to him, but hospital after hospital accepted him for residency.

If you choose to read this, and I do recommend it, be sure to get the most recent publication (1999 or 2000). I can't speak for everyone, but I am disinclined to read serial-killer stories that end discouragingly, without the killer being captured and convicted. The 1999 publication of Blind Eye has an update by the author, and its epilog concludes the story satisfactorily. Well done.

(Note: My Simon and Schuster trade paperback edition, which appears to be the one that amazon is selling, says its copyright is 1999. It doesn't specifically say when it is published, but I know the book contains material current to 2000. So I guess it was published in 2000, which as far as I know is the most recent publication.)

Doctors With Professional Myopia
Dr. Michael Swango now lives at ADMAX, the most secure federal prison in the country in Florence, CO. The UnaBomber is there, as well as many notorious others. Swango's specialty was killing or attempting to kill people with poison (arsenic, nicotine) or injecting massive amounts of a prescribed drug into a hospital patient's IV line. Swango found a fault line in the medical system and exploited it; teaching hospitals cared more about their own PR than their patients' health. While nurses knew the truth, the superiors ignored it. It is a haunting tale. Stewart is a good writer; he won a Pulitzer. The book, overall, though, is a bit arid. It's still a good read. And Swango is where he will never get out, a good thing. He killed between 30 and 60 people.

RIVITING
This review will not be different from many other readers but I must repeat how disturbing and predatory were the actions of the main character.As a piece of investigative journalism, the author had the benefit of processing all the information but the gullibility of the people living and working with this murderer seemed odd to me.Maybe as it occurs, people are not able to compile and synthesize circumstances.But then again, Swango had the advantage of education, good looks, and personal attraction - as do many sociopaths.

Equally disturbing were the sloppy practices of universities and hospitals in keeping track of this character.The fear of politics, press, and litigation seemed to affect solid investigation.It makes one realize how each person must be their own advocate when a patient or treated in hospital.

I especially liked the end of the book in which the author completed the investigation, interviewed people with whom Swango worked, and gave some insight on the background and diagnosis of a serial killer.My hope is that evidence will be found that will curtail this person forever.

Great Calculus III book, NOT Early Transcendentals
This is a great book for College Calculus 3. If your class requires the "Early Transcendentals" edition, this is essentially the same book. It contains the EXACT same material as the Early Transcendentals edition but everything is pushed ahead one chapter. It has the exact same amount of chapters and the exact same questions so don't fret, this book will work for your class. Also the new price on Amazon is usually cheaper than the used price in your university's bookstore! (Note that you most likely won't be able to sell it back to your university because of it not being E.T.). Overall a great way to learn Calculus 3!

Good...for getting your homework done
I would not recommend this book to anyone unless

a)You need to have the book available so you can do the homework
b)You're going to buy the solutions manual as well

Me and three classmates of mine bought the solutions manual and we can all agree that it has helped a lot. Honestly the main problem with this book is that there just aren't enough examples to really prepare you for the problems that you'll have to solve for homework and it also doesn't do much to explain how it went from point A to point B. If you don't want to buy the solutions manual(though I highly advise you to do so if you intend on buying this book) then look at the khan academy videos on youtube, ask questions on yahoo answers about the subject or just look online for a better understanding of the material(although again I advise you to also buy the solutions manual if you are going to buy this book) and make sure to read the book carefully. Infact read it ahead of time before the lecture so you'll know what to ask(since most likely you will have many questions about how they did this or that).

Again if you have the option of taking another class that DOESNT use this book then go for it(unless you already know that the book they'll use is just as bad or worse than this one). But if you're like me where you had no other option, make sure to buy the solutions manual as well.

Not the best book for Calculus
I'm not the best math guy in the world but I want to learn and this is not the book to learn with.Calculus in not easy to begin with and it helps if you have a good instructor, but this book treats the student as if they have mastered the subject.The examples are nowhere close to the exercises and there is not a lot of explaination.I like to to see A, B, C, and D, not just jumping from A to D.I still go back to my old calc books for reference.This book may be smaller than my first calc book but is sure lacks the material!!!

Incredible story told with remarkable detail
Until reading Den of Thieves, Liar's Poker was my personal favorite when it came to Wall Street books.Stewart's account of Michael Milken, Ivan Boesky, and Martin Siegel, among others, is incredibly detailed and wonderfully laid out.Learning the backgrounds of almost every character in the book helps the reader better understand each person and how they got themselves into this mess.While I do believe Stewart has plenty of quotes in the book that are hard to believe are truly 100% accurate quotes, and he definitely throws in a bit of his own politics by knocking down the "Raegan-era economics" whenever possible, he did an excellent job writing a complete story for what was a very complex insider trading scheme.

True story about Insurance industry
This is a TRUE story about the rip off that Prudential did to the American public.
This was prior to the scandal about Worldcom, etc.Although some of it is a bit dull and dry, stay with it.I know I did.And, it was mind blowing to learn how men in power can manipulate, lie, cheat, deceive all in the name of MONEY.
Like you, I had always believe that Prudential was a sterling company with a valuable honest reputation.I guess it did at one time until this man became CEO.
It is Greed beyond belief and a huge eye-opener.But, you will need to be the judge upon reading it.

Not a very truthful protrayal of Milken
I just reread this book now that I have 14-more years of financial world experience.I enjoyed the first half which primarily deals with the financiers and their transactions, but the second half gets bogged down following the regulators who seem hell-bent on making big arrests of powerful people and advancing their fame and careers more than they care for the actual rule of law.

Most of the financiers introduced are truly repugnant characters, in particular guys like Dennis Levine, Marty Siegel, and Richard Freeman.Levine comes across as a conniving weasel who was basically inept at arbitrage and was able to hide this fact from the ignorant (not everyone) by cheating.Siegel was portrayed as a smug crook who turned crybaby as soon as he had to take his medicine.I can't decide if I disliked Levine or Siegel more.Freeman is the most interesting.He seems clearly guilty of insider trading, and pretty much escaped severe prosecution thanks to his benefactors (Robert Rubin) at Goldman Sachs, along with most of his personal wealth.

While Stewart does some exceptional research, it is also clear that he is engaging in a lot of speculation.The most obvious example is the numerous recounted conversations between all the characters, which is of questionable accuracy and few of which are verifiable beyond what the author was able to extract from a large group of people whose honesty is suspect.This includes all the attorneys, corporate chieftains, and in my opinion it especially includes all the government agents and prosecutors.

There is a lot of myth surrounding Milken, and unfortunately most of it is inaccurate.For one, Milken has always been very guarded of his privacy.Its easy to assume he is this way because he has something to hide, which is a poor argument many people love to put forward these days.For the most part Milken has shunned interviews and has made a best effort to not get involved with the press.

Most of his closest associates remained loyal to him, and he was essentially fingered by the lying criminal Boesky for an accounting irregularity involving $5.3 million in commissions, which is hardly a master-mind criminal gain considering the multitrillion dollar scope of Drexel's operation.By fingering Milken Boesky, who clearly was guilty of insider trading, got off with a mere 3-year sentence and was able to retain some $25+ million at the expense of the people he hurt. To support Boesky's claim, agents entered the home of a young female employee and basically got her to admit guilt through coercion (fear) for something she probably did not actually understand.Unlike Boesky, Milken was never convicted of insider trading, nor was there any clear evidence that he had engaged in it.In fact, Judge Kimba Wood conceded that 4 out of the 5 convictions had zero negative economic impact, however Stewart clearly allows his personal opinions to vilify Milken and paint him out as some genius criminal.So in hindsight, the sum negative economic impact of what Milken was charged for was actually less than $320,000.Considering his operation was trading roughly $1 billion per day, there is clearly an unfair bias present throughout the book.

Milken is arguably the most brilliant financier of our age, and having financed some 3,200 companies, it is unlikely anyone will outperform him anytime soon (if ever).He was largely responsible for economic improvement in the US in the 1980's.He has always been a strong proponent of sound capital structures and responsible use of leverage.Companies that were suffering from inept managers were easy targets for takeover and restructures using Drexel financing.Beyond just junk bonds, Milken employed a vast range of financing methods that provided essential capital, which allowed companies to grow, hire, and prosper.Once it became evident that the Milken tap was shutting down (1987-1991), the market responded negatively as would be expected.

There was much to be gained from Milken's downfall. Drexel's success certainly created a lot of ill will among the old and established Wall Street banks.Since Drexel via Milken was the dominant financier, the destruction of Drexel and the ruin of Milken sent their multibillion dollar financing into the hands of the very competitors who clearly stood to gain.Stewart conveniently ignores this whole side of the equation, which is not fair.It is a good example of the many biases that plague this book.Then we also have the likes of Rudy Giuliani behind the prosecution, and here Stewart tries to argue that Giuliani had such noble intentions and cared so much about the rule of law as opposed to his making a big name for himself and advancing his public career (all this just before he successfully ran for NYC Mayor).

If you are really interested in Milken, the book is worth reading so long as you understand that a lot of the information that is presented as hard and irrefutable fact is actually rather questionable, especially in hindsight.Reading the book for the second time, it felt dated and given that it was released fairly shortly after all the events concluded, is clearly guilty of hype and sensationalism.

Great book on the insider trading scandal and its leading characters. The parallels to the current insider trading scandal are clear, as is the corruption sneaking in on otherwise decent and intelligent people ("relax, everybody does it"). Fails epically at its fundamental responsibility: teaching
Of the 18 math textbooks I've used in my academic lifetime, this is the worst by a mile.Let's start with the unforgivable, dealbreaking flaws: it does a terrible job explaining mathematical concepts.Mr. Stewart seems to assume absolute mastery of all material involved (often high-level algebra and trigonometry) -- an assumption that causes him to frequently skip or combine steps in explanations, which can leave you scratching your head at how the hell he arrived at the conclusion (sometimes it even seems to assume you know the very things it's supposed to be teaching you).Worse, the intro & examples for any given section almost never give adequate training to solve all of the corresponding exercises.I found that reading the intro (no matter how many times) preps you for the first 20 or so problems, but for the remaining 30 you're on your own, stuck there staring blankly at the page, frustrated at having no educational resource to turn to.

If you want to survive whatever class force-feeds this textbook down your throat, you'd better hope you end up with a professor who's clear and helpful enough to compensate (do prior research on ratemyprofessors.com), because you won't get far relying on this book alone.

For the record, I'm not a moron.I'm naturally comfortable with and skilled at math, scored 91%ile on the math SAT, and got an A in both Precalculus and Business Calculus in college.This book made me feel pretty dumb until I found all the Amazon reviews on Stewart's other calc books making the same complaints.Don't let it get you down.

We can dock further points for being 1,000+ pages thick, not very solidly constructed (the binding gets weak and wiggly pretty fast), and with a sticker closing in on $170, outrageously overpriced.

Calculus: James Stewart 3rd Editon
This is a calculus textbook for college classes Math 151, 152 and 153. The most current edition is the 4th, but the material is the same. Unfortunately, the homework problems are often different. The 4th edition is far more pricey, but helpful if you need to complete homework assignments.

Rather Pedestrian.
I wanted a full life biography of James Stewart, the great, quintessentially American actor. I found it in Donald Dewey tome, 512 pages worth. It was available in the unabridged audio version. Mr. Dewey spends quite a bit of time on Stewart hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania. It is rather unremarkable except as the birthplace of Stewart &Mr. Dewey spends too much time on it & the townsfolk. Stewart himself rarely returned after he left. Stewart was the product of a middle class family in small town America. Unlike most celebrities,his upbringing was entirely normal & perhaps even boring. He idolized his father & the love was returned. They were always close & His father remained the most important influence on Stewart's life. That life was tightly controlled by his father with apparently little opposition until he set out on his own after Princeton. The book chronicles every movie Stewart made. His career is clearly divided into two distinct chapters: before & after World WarII. Before the war he was already a major star. After many supporting roles, he broke through with one of the defining roles of his career, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. It raised a political firestorm & was condemned by many in government who wanted it banned. It spoke of corruption in government & the corrosive influence of power on elected officials & their unelected cronies put into positions of power. Other lighter fare Such as Destry, Shop Around the Corner & The Philadelphia Story were made in 1939-40. He was the all American boy, single, good looking & as was said in Hollywood, "a good catch". There was very little scandal attached to Stewart but he certainly was not a monk. The war changed everything. He grew up. He had enlisted early & was adecorated bomber pilot seeing considerable action. He did very little movie making aside from PSA's for the military, of which he was very fond. He hated the word hero, feeling it was overused then as it certainly is now. It has lost most of its value. He rarely talked about the war & did very few movies about it. The tone of his movies now became a bit darker as did movies in general post war. One his favorite movies was Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life & Mr. Dewey spends some time taking about this, possibly Capra's as well as Stewart,s most well known movie. I think Stewart's personal favorite was Harvey from 1950. The story about an invisible rabbit that only Stewart's character could see. He did the movie, & performed it several different times on stage & also a tv version. Mr. Dewey ponders long & hard on why this was. There are so many great movies. He was such a good hardworking professional actor. He didn't particularly care about the movie-star part but was always repectful to fans, never forgeting who got him there. He liked doing biographies. He insisted on doing The Spirit of St. Louis. He was playing Charles Lindberg at 25 when he was actually twice that age. Not bad, but it is maybe one movie that could use a remake. His conservative politics started to show in movies such as the propaganda pieces, The FBI Story & Strategic Air Command. Both are good entertaining movies for their time. By 1965 his best acting days were gone & his politicshardening more along the way. The author teases us with the possibility that he not Ronald Reagon could have run for govenor of California. They were great friends & Stewart had helped Reagan out with guest appearences on several of Reagan's tv shows in the early 60's. Most interesting was the lifelong friendship Stewart had with Henry Fonda. Two more politically opposite men you could not find. A right wing reactionary vs a left wing-nut. Apparently they didn't discuss politics but were friend from their days as struggling actors in the 1930's. Stewart was with Fonda in the middle of filming
The Cheyenne Social Club in 1970 when the greatest tragedy of his life occurred: The death of his son in Vietnam. It tore him apart given his strong support of that war. He seldom spoke of him again. A great source of strength was his wife Gloria. He married rather later in life & when she died before him, I think he felt his life was over. The charges he was a racist are a little hard. Prejudiced, perhaps, inability or unwiilingness to change, definitely. We need to have big biographies on important figures of the 20th century & in the field of cinema, James Stewart is a giant. This biography is okay, but could have used a little more pi-zazz.

A thouroughly uninspired look into the life of a legend.
Being a huge fan of both classic movies and Jimmy Stewart, I was thrilled to come across this book in my public library. However, some of my enthusiasm died off when I actually attempted to read the book, which began with a lengthy and uninteresting account of the building of the Jimmy Stewart museum.

I decided, however, to skip over these pages and give the book another try, but I really should not have bothered. This book reads like dry, witless highschool essay and offers no insight into the real Jimmy Stewart. With most biographies, I am able to put them down once I have read them and say, "I now know a little more about the true essence of this person". Not so for this book. It bored me to tears, I skipped over at least ten chapters and I didn't bother to read the last chapter.

I do not reccomend this book to anyone. I found myself less interested in Jimmy as the book wore on, which is not a good thing. If any of you should come across this book in YOUR local library, do yourselves a favour and DON'T check it out.

James Stewart a Racist?
I do not know why, but I have always liked "classic films" especially those of Cary Grant, Janes Stewart, Elizabeth Taylor and Dorothy Dandrige....I was very young when I first read this book-I think about 15 yrs old a few years after it first came out-and you would not believe my shock when about three quarters of the way through the book I find out that Stewart was pissed at the changing movie business, because apparently African American's were "taking over" the business.....now, was this Jimmy on a bad day? Or the real Jimmy coming out to play?

Ever since then, whenever I look at a Stewart film, I appreciate the acting, but the whole "I am nice boy from a small town" schtick is just a Hollywood facade that of which he actively participated in.

When I knew nothing of Stewarts's career, this book provided the "basic" info I needed but based on that comment made towards the 1970's decade of his career, I am glad that I don't know more.

Where's the biography?
I thought this was supposed to be a biography about Jimmy Stewart. I learned so little about him that I quit reading the book. The author, Donald Dewey, spent a vast amount of time on the town of Indiana, PA's quarrel over a museum. Mr. Dewey also spent more time writing about other people. I forgot who the book was about. I am so glad there are other biographies about Jimmy Stewart. His movies are such great entertainment, it would be a shame if this were the only biography to read.

I have read many books about the life of Jimmy Stewart and found that this one is the most thorough and balanced.Mr. Dewey details Jimmy Stewart's life from all angles but never resorts tosmarmy or tabloid-like tactics.While he does not sugar coat Stewart, he doesn't blast him either; he leaves the reader to draw his/her own conclusions.This is the book I would recommend to anyone who wished to find out as much as possible about one of the greatest actors and intriguing personalities of the 20th century. ... Precal headache
There were several mistakes and typos and the solutions manual it came with was riddled with mistakes and typos. Also didn't work sit well with my school's math department. Word of advice to the publisher. . . . edit and re-edit prior to printing.

Excellent Book to learn precalculus
I selected this book primarily because I needed a book to go over the topic area with my son and it was one of the textbooks available on cramster.com (which is web site that has the problem solutions for popular college textbooks). It is very readable and has many exercises (probably more than the average person would ever need). The really nice feature that I wish I had when I was learning this material (way back when) was the use of many graphs, diagrams and the graphing calculator to illustrate the concepts and ideas.In addition, the end of every section has very thoughtful exercises that go beyond the tedious and repetitive problem solving route. Lastly, the chapter test helps to prepare for any real class exams.
As a parent of a college age student I wondered about the outrageous prices being demanded by college textbooks today - are they worth it?Well, this one is....and I purchased two books, one of me and my son and I am not disappointed. I have not even explored the online features available to assist students yet.In summary , all these features provided andthe adherence by the authors to a positive pedagogical approach that benefits students add value to the book and make it worth while for anyone taking the course on their own or in a classroom.

First time taking calculus - this book made it a disaster.I'll give the author one thing, he is a smart guy.However it seems as though Stewart has forgotten how difficult it is to learn this material.Explanations are wordy and overcomplicated, and example problems are constantly missing important steps.In addition, homework problems are almost undoable.My first assignment for calculus 2 (using the second half of the book) took six hours to complete with two other friends because we just couldn't wrap our brains around the concepts.The only reason this review has two stars instead of one is because of the useful integral table in the back and an attractive cover design.Beyond that, prepare to be lost. ... Good Book
I had the 3rd edition and bought this one for my wife to take classes. It is quite satisfactory.

Calculus Book
This book was in great condition when I got it. The subject isn't the easiest of course because it's calculus, but it was in good condition and serves its purpose.

Text Review
Many reviewers claim that this text "skips steps/examples." This is true. However, Much of the information it skips can be found in a standard pre-calculus class. Did those reviewers not do well in their pre-calc class? Or even take it at all? It is a hard text, but for someone going into mathematics this is not an excuse. Intermediate algebra, trig, or arithmetic will not be covered in this text. If you are having trouble with the text I suggest picking up another book on calculus that will "hold your hand" through an introduction to calculus before reading this text. Sorry if I sound condescending but calculus is not easy and you may need lots of independent study without an instructor.
