Product Description

Based in part on the recent interviews with more than 125 people—among them Tommy Ramone, Chris Stein (Blondie), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Hilly Kristal (CBGBs owner), and John Zorn—this book focuses on punk’s beginnings in New York City to show that punk was the most Jewish of rock movements, in both makeup and attitude. As it originated in Manhattan’s Lower East Side in the early 1970s, punk rock was the apotheosis of a Jewish cultural tradition that found its ultimate expression in the generation born after the Holocaust. Beginning with Lenny Bruce, “the patron saint of punk,” and following pre-punk progenitors such as Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, Suicide, and the Dictators, this fascinating mixture of biography, cultural studies, and musical analysis delves into the lives of these and other Jewish punks—including Richard Hell and Joey Ramone—to create a fascinating historical overview of the scene. Reflecting the irony, romanticism, and, above all, the humor of the Jewish experience, this tale of changing Jewish identity in America reveals the conscious and unconscious forces that drove New York Jewish rockers to reinvent themselves—and popular music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun book. However ...
The "heebie jeebies" in the title constitutes a fairly pointless pun on Hebes, as in Hebrews. It is the author's contention that punk rock, in most of its manifestations, was the product of a specifically Jewish mentality, that is, heavily influenced by and largely derived from the creativity of artists and promoters who happened to be Jewish. It's a little unclear what that has to do with getting creeped out inside the late, great punk rock palace of CBGB's, unless it's to invoke the Woody Allen stereotype of Jewish jitteriness.

Since Jews have always been heavily represented in almost every aspect of popular music, and arguably, in classical and jazz, it's not a particularly salient observation that there were a lot of Jews or those with Jewish antecedents in this particular genre, among them Joey Ramone (nee Jeff Hyman), Danny Fields, Malcolm McClaren, CBGB's owner Hilly Crystal, Lenny Kaye, Chris Stein of Blondie, journalist Charlie Frick, Mick Jones of the Clash and Richard Hell (nee Myers). He does make a case that the Jewish-outsider-socially-rebellious-hipster tradition had SOME kind of role to play in the rise of punk. Given that the Ramones' back-to-the-garage mentality inspired a zillion other young folks to join in the fun and urgency of making rock music, maybe it's not so surprising after all that Spin put them as number two in their list of the most influential bands, and perhaps credit is due to the Jewish hipster tradition. But was the Ramones' alienation particularly Jewish, or simply American white middle class? The intentionally cheesy adoption of retro junk artifacts and attitudes that helped define the subculture was codified by a (presumably) Irish-American and Scandinavian-American, Legs McNeil and John Holmstrom, who founded Punk magazine.

The author fails to mention that, perhaps as a part of its anti-hippie and therefore anti-egalitarian thrust, early punk could at times be right wing, homophobic and racist, hardly sociopolitical attitudes usually associated with Jews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Praise from a shiksa
You don't have to be a Jew or a lover of punk to appreciate this well-researched, smartly written book. Beeber's voice, part wise guy and part acolyte, carries this book even for a "shiksa goddess" like me. He opens up a fascinating culture (or two) in an accessible, enjoyable way. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Exploration of Outsider Identity
In this brilliant exploration of outsider identity, Beeber uncovers the links between Jewishness and punk rock rebellion. The book includes in-depth interviews with such punk rock luminaries as Tommy Ramone, Chris Stein of Blondie, and former Sex Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren. Beeber also explores the inherent contradictions within the punk movement, including the use of Nazi imagery by bands whose family members may have barely escaped the Holocaust. The book includes fascinating anecdotes about punk rock legends, including a chapter that describes Lou Reed's attempts to bring his dog to a seder, and Richard Hell's defensive responses to Beeber's simple question: Are you a Jew? Beeber is an insightful writer and cultural historian who makes heretofore unseen connections between origins of punk in the aggressive outsider comedy of Lenny Bruce and the work of graphic novel pioneer Will Eisner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read with a stretch of a premise.
Beeber's book is an interesting recount of the formation of the punk rock scene in New York City. However, his attempt to correalate punk rock to the experience of being jewish stretches thin pretty quickly.

First off, Beeber utilizes Lou Reed and especially the Velvet Underground as forebearers of punk. While certainly influential, the Velvets were more of an avante garde pop band than punks. They were as much a result of the overall New York art scene and streets, as well as John Cale's british ideology and muscianship as Reed being jewish.

Next Beeber cites Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers. The Modern Lovers, despite the Sex Pistols covering Road Runner, were sort of pre-new wave folk band, they never really released an album when they were together and Richman was from Boston. How this qualifies them as a proto punk band representing the New York Jewish voice is too much for me to comprehend.

Beeber does make a good case that Tommy Ramone was the architect of Ramones. However, he only lasted a couple of albums, Dee Dee was the main songwriter and Johnny's buzzsaw guitar and militaristic leadership (he seemed like a real tool)were as essential as anything.Further, Joey might have been obviously jewish to the New York punk scene, but to most he was just the senstive outcast. Tommy's influence is obvious, but it seemed to me he was as influenced by being an immigrant and growing up in the wrong neighborhood as solely by virtue of being jewish.

While New York obviously was a huge influence on the punk scene, the industrial and menancing Detroit rockers like the MC5, Iggy and Alice Cooper had just as much influence as the New York bands. This is especially true prior to all the great New York bands getting started. Also, the true New York punk influence, The NY Dolls, who really blended the street, with artistic ambitions and the phoniness of Manhatten dont have the jewish connection and therefor dont really lend to the author's theory.

The somewhat later day punkers like Richard Hell, Lenny Kaye and Chris Stein make a good points of converstation, but all seem as influenced by academics as ethnithcity. Hell in fact wouldnt be interviewed and dismissed the premise completely. It also somewhat dismisses how much influence this groups partners in punk,Debbie Harry, Tom Verlaine and Patti Smith, had.

Some of the more interesting jewish punks, including the ladies, Genya Raven and Helen Wheels, and less well known acts like the Dictators (hilarious name) and Suicide just werent well known enough outside of the city to be all that influential.

I dont want to take anything away from the city or culture that reinvented music, but punk was about all that were alienated, suspected and unwanted. It was about anger, pointing out hypocrisy, doing it yourself and the desire to succeed.Didnt Bowie once say all the Brit punks "wanted to be stars."

So, Beeber's point is again lost when punk became so much the property of the anglo british (other than Malcom McClaren managing the Pistols)who apparantly lacking jewish guilt and the somewhat limiting factor of being the property of New Yawk, increased its exposure tremendously.(Hey lets face it Johnny Rotten cussing and spitting in a British accent is gonna play in Cleveland, whereas Joey Ramones obvious jewishness... well... its a joke, one I think Lenny Bruce might have gotten).Fact is, punk was never gonna play to the mainstream, the populus cant all be disnefranchised.

Overall and interesting read, with a thought provoking premise that is well explored, but ultimatly a bit overwritten to prove its point. Still worthwhile if you have any interest in those magical formative musical days in the Big Apple and some of its reaching influences.

Product Description
The Scud missile was developed as the centerpiece of Soviet plans to fight nuclear war in the heart of Europe. However, it was never used in its intended role and has instead become a symbol of the changing nature of warfare in the aftermath of the Cold War. Saddam Hussein's Iraqi armed forces were almost helpless in the face of the Coalition forces in the 1991 Gulf War; the only weapon that Iraq could use to injure the Coalition forces was its arsenal of Scud missiles. This book explores the development and variants of the missile and its launch systems, its proliferation outside of the West, and its role in conflicts around the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5-stars for one-of-a-kind material...
While I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. Day's analysis (wanting more "meat" to the book), I have to give 5-stars to Zaloga's "Scud" book.It is the only one of its kind out there... while that shouldn't automatically guarantee quality work, Mr. Zaloga's expertise does.Other sources, such as Jane's, may have different approaches to SCUD analysis, this has a good graphical representation to understand its metamorphosis from the battlefield missile of the 1950s, to the terror weapon of the 21st Century.

I think the only better unclassified resource would be to "own" a SCUD system.Wouldn't happen to see one for sale, would you?

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on Scuds
It's very difficult to find books on this topic, which is really a shame considering the impact these missiles had during Gulf War I and their potential in Gulf War II. Zaloga does a great job with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good material, but thin
Steven Zaloga is top notch at what he does and a good book on the Scud missile is long overdue, given the fact that it is one of the few powerful weapons that has been used somewhat successfully against American forces, and given that it is operated by so many armies. This is a good basic overview of the Scud. However, I was disappointed that there wasn't more to this book.It seems rather thin even by the standards of this series.I wanted a little more meat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Zaloga Classic
For anyone wanting more info on the Scuds this Zaloga masterpiece has it - also with excellent art work ... Read more

Product Description
Thanks to television, the internet, and the incredible popularity of the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, when Kill Phil was first published in 2006, tournament poker had become the richest sport in the world. The problem was that no-limit hold 'em was dominated by a handful of experienced and skilled professional players. Kill Phil turned the tables on the pros by introducing a strategy that allowed even an absolute novice to compete against the best players in the world. The Kill Phil strategy remains highly effective when used in confrontations with even the world's best players, but tournament play is evolving. This revised edition reflects the new trends in tournament poker by refining the use of the all-in move and providing adaptations that take into account the new style of hyper-aggressive play. At its core, though, Kill Phil remains what it's been from the start--the best method possible for entering the exciting and potentially lucrative poker-tournament arena. As a special bonus, this new edition contains the complete set of strategies formatted as they appear on the Kill Phil strategy cards--an added $14.95 value! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I bought this for my husband and he loves it.He reads the book again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Honest and effective
OK, I have read some books out there and I had some initial thoughts about the need for such a book.

This book is for the beginners or the inexperienced ones in big tournaments and confrontations with big players. You know, the type of players that ask you how much you've got (chips in your stack, they mean) and just by the way you answer (not the anwser itself!) can understand what kind of hand you are at, and how to outplay you!

If you fall in that category, there is nothing to be ashamed for (we all were novices at some time) but you have to protect yourself.

And this is how you do it!

I have actually seen so many poker stars on various TV shows mentioning the importance of this book and how it affected the games play (since it helped a lot their opponents, especially "fishes") that I could not ignore it.

So does it do what it promises?

Yes it does.

It gives you an effective way of dealing with the Pros, the bullies, the tough opponents, if you have not the experience or the ways yet to deal with them.

It also tells you of its imperfections, its weaknesses, its limitations! And it suggests that you study and improve further!

That's the most honest thing I have read ever! Knowing that you have a strategy that is NOT perfect, NOT ideal for all situations, but it is a GREAT one for specific situations, is of crusial importance. I know I don't need to be a KP with my friends playing at home. I know that this one is a simple strategy guide, not suited for all sircumstances, otherwise everybody would know and use it everywhere...

And I know that if I ever get into the Big Game and feel that I am in danger of being outplayed by the sharks, this one is a BIG weapon in my hands! One that can frustrate even Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey or any other "Phil" out there...

And even if I don't use it, I would like to be aware of it, just in case an opponent does use it instead! Cause then I wouldn't be really frustrated i.e. by an opponent going all-in on me on every hand heads up!!! I would simply understand his strategy and play accordingly!!!

There is a quote in the book, from Daniel Negreanu doing exactly that: Deciding to call an opponent that was going all-in on him heads up in every single hand! Daniel told him " I call you cause I have to, since I know that if I don't you will just keep doing this all the time!" And it shows why Daniel is such a great player, but also why this strategy is so effective! Imagine the tough position such a player is getting at, against a possible fish using KP strategy!

Need I say more?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Massive help in the Poker world!!
I was recommended to get this book a good friend and a very well know world Poker player Nic Szeremeta.

Since reading Kill Phil, I have made 5 out of 7 final tables in my local Casino Tournaments and won 3 in total. Before, I was usually losing my chips just before the final table, but with the tactics explained in this book, I have managed to bully my way through and go into the final table with a very sizeable stack.

After playing for 4 years prior to reading this, this book has taught me things I would have never even thought of doing previous to it.

I would recommend to anyway who is a keen Poker player, whether you are just starting or have been playing for a long time, get this book. It really does help!

5-0 out of 5 stars Please do not buy this book.
Great concepts. And the sequal is good too. I won the next three live tournaments when I used these strageties, and have won good money online too. I hope no one buys this book so I can beat you at the tables.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book has its uses
"Kill Phil" expounds a formulaic approach to evening the playing field between beginners and very good players.Their second book, "Kill Everyone" is for players actually wanting to get better.

I don't feel the authors were proposing serious players use this method a long term strategy. They were simply giving rank amateurs the tools necessary to sit at a table with the best in the world and avoid playing "their" game... which is strong postflop play. As a quick fix, it does the job.

The major flaw in the book is that only 1% or less of the poker population are actually good players. So if you use this approach in your home game or local daily tournament you won't get far.People who can't lay down top pair or a top 10% hand preflop (no matter the action) will take you out very very fast.

And if you happen to go on a heater and make the final 2 tables or so, the good players there will recognize what you are doing and destroy you long before you get close to the big money.

However, if by sheer luck you happen to win a seat to the WSOP and have never played poker much before (through a satellite, freeroll, or whatever), then maybe this book will let you finish in the top 60% vs the top 90%.And if your goal is to spend a few more hours with your heroes, then by all means, employ the strategy of this book.

I am awarding this book 3 stars simply by the fact that it will help an aspiring poker player immediately notice if someone is trying to use the Kill Phil or some similar method at the tables. You also should read it before reading their Kill Everyone which references this book multiple times.

While this book doesn't really address how to attack a player using the Kill Phil style, other books have.In a nutshell, Kill Phillers pick up a lot of small pots and lose a lot of big ones.In their attempt to avoid postflop play, they end up getting trapped either before or after the flop anyways.

So I definitely recommend reading this book to expand your overall poker knowledge, but if you are serious about getting better at the game, do not employ its strategies unless its for experimentation only.

If you actually want to get better at poker, read the Harrington on Hold'em series to gain a basic understanding of the game and then move on to something advanced, like Snyder's books or Kill Everyone, to learn how to destroy your opponents. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Read the appendix, toss the book
Reads like a weak romance story and adds nothing to the understanding of the Polish resistance. The best part of the book is the appendix, and even it cites Wikpedia as a source.

1-0 out of 5 stars Streets of Warsaw
Needed an editor (grammar mistakes!)and spellcheck (Misses for Mrs.) big time. I am a former English teacher and cringed at the elementary school mistakes. The only thing that kept my interest was my interest in European history during WWII.

5-0 out of 5 stars STREETS OF WARSAWSteven L. Wiggins
If you are interested in historical fiction stories about the Polish Resistance, this is a MUST READ book. I could not put this book down. It is so important for people to read this book and learn from it so we do not repeat this holocaust. It was truly amazing to me how the people continued to live and fight against the Nazi with such horrendous odds against them.It is based on true historical facts.I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing book
I ordered this based on reviews by other readers and the fact that Amazon showed it on a page with the likes of Alan Furst. Fans great historical, e.g. Furst, will be disappointed by the sloppy amateurish writing in this apparently self published work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended - exciting, beautiful, informative
Don't be put off by the confronting cover - this is a wonderful story. I chose the book to learn more about my Polish heritage and because I enjoy reading war stories. I found it was an exciting and beautifully written story. At the same time I learned many new things about life in Warsaw at that time in history, and reading it felt like I might have been walking through the streets myself. ... Read more

This book was very helpful to me in every aspect of the Mohs prodcedure and the preparing of slides for my doctor to "read".I have used this book for a reference time and again for questions as well as troubleshooting problems. I am a new Mohs tech, and my doctor is very happy with my work,I thank Mr. Lee for this great book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars MOHS Cryotomy
I was impressed with MR Lee's "Moh's Cryotomy". He has a great ability to make concepts clear that one initially feels are difficult and confusing. He shows that "pictures are worth a thousand words" with clear easy to understand illustrations. This is the type of book that gets better with every read. Hats OFF to Mr. Lee for his contribution to a technique that is not difficult to learn with the type of help as supplied in "MOHS Cryotomy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good book......
This book may be good for the beginner MOHS techs, but cannot serve as a reference for anyone in the field. I was really disapointed, and felt like this book was put out, just because there are not a whole lot of books in this field. The pictures and graphics were horrendous, and I do not recommend this book to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best UNIX books ever written.
This is one of the best UNIX books ever written.Period.It's too bad that New Riders never bothered to update it, as it is kind of dated nowadays. It is still very useful, and not a waste by any means, but an update would be nice.It hits on every major aspect of UNIX and has examples.I have found things in there that I didn't find even in the Nemeth books. This belongs on every UNIX Sysadmin's bookshelf. The next time I ask for some Unix and tech books at work, I will see if this or other used copies are still available and try to get them to buy it.I don't want to take mine to work because I don't want to damage it, and because it is just too big and bulky to carry back and forth.

Oh, and you have to love that cover art..... ... Read more
