Product Description
Aaron Sorkin is one of the most notable voices in Hollywood, attracting millions of weekly viewers with his television series The West Wing and scoring box office success with films like A Few Good Men and The American President. With a musician's sense of rhythm and writing skills honed in the theater, Sorkin crafts dialogue that brings characters to life. His crisp, tight language is both exciting to listen to and poetic in its beauty and power--but what lies behind the slick, sophisticated exchanges between Sorkin's characters? Does Sorkin's ability to captivate viewers with rapid-fire, humorous dialogue lull them into overlooking an inherent political agenda, a sense of elitism, and gender bias prominent throughout his work? Aaron Sorkin's skill as a writer garners him accolades, even from his critics: complex, nuanced, sometimes subtle but often forceful, Sorkin's work is best understood when viewed from a variety of perspectives.

This collection of essays on the work of Aaron Sorkin affords greater insight into the complexities of his writing, drawing connections between the film and television output of today's most prominent and influential screenwriter. Scholars from various fields--film, literature, art history, political science, and more--examine the thematic content and rhetorical strategy of Sorkin's writing. Eleven essayists explore the subtle, pervasive and often contradictory messages woven throughout Sorkin's work, from politics to portrayals of women, and consider his impact on film, television and culture. An interview with Aaron Sorkin precedes the essays, each of which has notes and a bibliography. An appendix covering film and television credits is included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars for the literate Sorkin fan
This is a great collection for the literate Sorkin fan. It makes connections among all his works, including his films. (I didn't even realize that he wrote the screenplay for the film Malice.) It debates issues. And it raises interesting and thoughtful questions.

I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be titled "Bashing" Aaron Sorkin
I was disappointed in this book.I am familiar with Aaron Sorkin's plays, movies and television series and find him to be a brilliant and insightful writer.I was hoping to learn more about his process, technique and where in this "whiz kid" his idea pool resides.Instead I found this collection of esssays to be tedious and overly-analytical in their review of minutiae in an attempt to find hidden meaning in words and phrases.Aaron Sorkin's works are perceptive and realistic in pace and tone and substance, but the contributors to this book have found very little positive and a great deal of perceived subtext to examine.I would not recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Aaron Sorkin's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up
I really enjoyed this book. I liked reading different perspectives on Sorkin's writing. I liked the fact that the essays about Sorkin, who is such a smart, interesting writier, were also smart and interesting. Sorkin's work deserves this.

The book made me think about his writing in new ways.

2-0 out of 5 stars I swear I'm not impressed....
Being a fan of The West Wing, The American President, Sports Night and A Few Good Men, I assumed this book would have more "Sorkin" in it.Primarily it's a collection of folks over analyzing his work and contradicting each other at every turn. These are primarily people in love with the sound of their own reasoning. I give it a C-

1-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Thought It Was Gonna Be
I was expecting this book to be about the process Sorkin uses to write the masterful scripts that he does. I thought it would be about HOW he writes his scripts, not analyzing the scripts from an academic point of view. So, for those out there expecting the same: BE WARNED.The book is a collection of ACADEMIC, esoteric writings that analyze Sorkin's work.

I ended up returning the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Writing
Aaron Sorkin's wirting for the first four seasons of this show was amazing. These scripts are proof of that. The teleplays transfer so well to the screen.I was shocked to see that the scripts he wrote were almost word for word what ended up on screen. The witty, fast-paced dialogue is great.Any fan of the show, or anyone looking to be a writer should check this out!

5-0 out of 5 stars the west wing outstanding
it was a sad day in the gump household when the west wing came to an end. but, with the many books and dvd's one can still get that great american feeling that president bartlett and that gang brought on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone interested in scriptwriting
The superb writing that underpins the success of this magnificent series is revealed. It's impossible to read the lines without the voices of the actors' in your head but that's ok. Sorkin would have written those characters with no thought to who would have played them and it just goes to show what a flawless job they did with the casting. I've played The West Wing 1-7 twice already and look forward to watching them all again soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars A damn good read...
I had resisted the lure of The West Wing for several years, aided chiefly by the crappy scheduling of the Australian TV networks who insisted on putting this show on at bad times and out of order (OK, rant over). During a bout of the flu last year, I succumbed to watching the first season on DVD. Three days later I was at the end of season 4 and completely hooked.

Whilst waiting for my next fix, I came across this book and it's companion volume (the Season 3/4 script-book). Reading the scripts took me straight back to the episodes in question - I could picture it all so clearly. The actors' voices flew out of the pages and brought the scenes to life in my head. My one gripe would be that Sorkin's insights and background info are a little light on the ground except at the beginning of the book (for comparison, check out the official Babylon 5 scriptbooks from J Michael Straczynski).

If you are a die-hard fan of the show or have more than a passing interest in shooting scripts, you need these in your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun!
"The West Wing Script Book" is a must for fans of this fabulous show! It's great to see the scripts and to see what the actors worked with.If you've seen the episodes, you'll be able to imagine all of the scenes and mannerisms.Just wonderful. I recommend. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Okay but the movies more entertaining.
I just could not get into this book.It seemed to be written by a military man for a military man/woman to read!Maybe it was just me but I just couldn't get into the book version of this story.I decided to watch the movie when it came to the big screen just to see if it was as frustrating as the book.As it turned out, it was one of the best movies I've ever seen.If you enjoy reading military type books with a lot of military type talk then this really is a book for you.Personally, I plan on sticking to the straight talk, everyday kind of books I'm used to.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes a great movie
With a Few Good Men, Aaron Sorkin keeps his readers turning the page. The story of two United States Marines charged and accused of murder unfolds in the hands of the protagonist but the excitement never yields until the closing scene. The main characters in the novel work together to solve the case and prove Dawson and Downey's innocence.Sorkin gives them trouble by the antagonists being directly involved with the case. There is much conflict that repeats throughout the play. Aaron Sorkin writes in perfect vernacular with respect to military affairs. He is accurate in describing the way that all United States Marines and Navy commanders would speak in and out of proper uniform. For one example,Sorkin writes, " Sir, yes sir".He concludes many confrontations with this term because simply this is the way things run in the Navy. Also, the way that Sorkin describes the characters can create mental pictures of the way they stand and speak. His knack for great detail is an asset to the enjoyment of the play. Because this is a play, there is not much description but the writing that does include stage direction and scene change does accurately do so. The characters in the story need eachother to stay strong.Kaffee struggles with the loss of his father, years ago.He feels he is obligated to live up to his father's nearly infallible reptuation. In the beginning, JO and Kaffee do not take eachother seriously, but she is there pushing him through it in the end when he thinks he's failed.Weinberg is an asset to the investigation, yet he is pessimistic throughout the play as a defense attorney. The play in itself is great and it would make a great movie (which it did).I believe that if it had been written as a novel, the value of the writing would be far greater. But, because it was a screenplay, it had not had enough room for elaborate description. On the other hand, the dialect is intense and incredible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Few Good Men
I consider this book as one of the best I have ever read. It is fascinating, thrilling and you can`t lay it down until you`ve finished it. I pay a great deal of respect to the author Aaron Sorkin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shooting Script for West Wing TV show.
Purchased as a gift for my husband. He "LOVES" this stuff.
He says it is great...

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant wWriting
An excellent way to savor the brilliance of the television show. Witty, insightful, intelligent dialogue...pristine story structure.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the Words First!
It begins with the idea, the vision, then the words go down on paper. Without the words, all an actor can do is stand there and emote, maybe. Without the words, all the crew can do is sit around and play with their equipment and watch the money fly away. Without the words, the studio has nothing to offer. It's the words first. Always.

This is an easy review, a simple review.
Buy this book to see how the words made the show.
Buy this book to see how a television script looks.
Buy this book to read excellent television scripts that became excellent television in the hands of a cast and crew of talented people.
Buy this book to get a taste of the wider political times out of which the series came and to which the series spoke volumes. It is all here in the words.

This is as good as a Master's Class in writing screen plays. Style, form, manuscript format, plot, character, how the background of the set can become a character itself, how the sum of the parts can definitely become greater than the whole. Great companion to the DVDs. Read the script first then watch the show. Then watch the episodes with the script at hand to see what went up on the screen. Annotate your copy, make notes, study and there's your class.

Tuition? $13.57 plus shipping (or not - could be free.)

Enjoy. It's the Words first.

"The West Wing Seasons 3 & 4" is a must for fans of this show. With eight scripts accumulated from the third and fourth seasons, not to mention black and white photos from the set, the biggest fan of the show will be in paradise. If the pace of the show is too fast for you, reading it at your own speed will clarify what went on in the episode. If you own "The West Wing Script Book" then you must get this with it.I recommend. ... Product Description

A dark-horse candidate comes from behind to win his party's nomination. As if to spite the pollsters and talking heads, the frank and brilliant former governor, Jed Bartlet, captures the White House to become President of the United States.

Surrounding himself with the best and the brightest, the president chooses his staff from the team responsible for putting him in the White House. Leo McGarry, the president's oldest friend -- and the man who convinces Bartlet to run -- is named chief of staff. One of the most powerful men in his party, Leo presides over the West Wing of the White House with a firm hand and a fatherly tone. With uncanny prescience, Leo puts his faith in Toby Ziegler, the only original staff member to make it through the campaign. Despite six previous failures, Toby's work along with a new team of friends and strangers, helps get Bartlet nominated and elected. Now, as the communications director for the White House, Toby holds an important role in crafting the president's word.

Using the power instilled in him as an old family friend, Leo McGarry brings Josh Lyman to the campaign with a simple request to come hear Jed Bartlet speak. In a VFW hall in Nashua, New Hampshire, the skeptical Josh does come and is amazed to finally find a candidate to believe in. Convinced that the man should be president, Lyman gets his friend Sam Seaborn to quit his job at a major law firm where he is about to become a partner and join Bartlet's campaign. Gladly serving at the pleasure of President Bartlet, Sam is now the White House deputy communications director and his friend Josh is the deputy chief of staff. Two men from different backgrounds from opposite ends of the country are united not just by friendship but by their devotion to the president.

"Is Jed Bartlet a good man?" is all that C.J. Cregg wants to know before she agrees to work for him. Toby Ziegler's assurance is all she needs to hear. In an age where the news cycle can last mere seconds, C.J. is the press secretary to the most demanding pool of reporters in the world, the White House Press Corps.

With a staff of more than 1,100 people, the West Wing overflows with offices and personnel. Although the upper echelon provides the very public face of the White House, a support staff of hundreds regularly carries out the duties of the executive branch of the government. Filling these desks are numerous aides and assistants, like Donna Moss, who started working for Josh Lyman during the nomination campaign and is now "deputy-deputy chief of staff." Among her many responsibilities is to make sure that her boss is on time for meetings and fully prepared -- which sometimes means making sure that he is dressed.

While the White House is very much a public institution, there is one man in particular whose job requires him to be either an imposing figure or totally invisible, often at the same time. Charlie Young, personal aide to the president, truly determines who has access. Among the many tasks laid out before this brilliant young man, he is first and foremost the keeper of the schedule.

These people, and a staff of hundreds more, lead America from the most privileged office in the world, from inside

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
Absolutely amazing, excellent for anyone who enjoyed watching the west wing, great to read, surprized it was so big when it arrived, but I'm not complaining there's just more to have in there then. I do love the fact that there are quotes from the actors, about the show and there other cast mates. This is an excellent buy! Worth every penny!

5-0 out of 5 stars West Wing Companion
The item showed up just as described and within a reasonable time.I was notified that it had shipped.Excellent transaction. Excellent item.I would order from this seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am so hoping for a sequel to this book!
I have seen the "West Wing" books that feature scripts from selected episodes. But this book includes every episode from the first two seasons, told in story form. Plus chapters on each of the actors and their characters, the background on the making of the show -- if you're a fan, this is a "must have". I just hope that there will be, at some point, additional volumes to cover the third, fourth and fifth seasons -- and so on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jam-packed with Trivia for the Serious Wingnut
I thumbed through this book in a bookstore and by the time I got home, I realized I had to own it and I was online ordering my own copy. This book is more than just a rehash of the first two seasons. We are treated to a real behind-the-scenes tour of what goes into filming the show. Talk about your West Wing trivia!

The asides from the actors on the characters they play are filled with gems of inside information. For instance, what do Brad Whitford and Janel Moloney think the roles of Josh and Donna are all about; how does Martin Sheen get the cast to treat him like the President and why is this adulation so important; and why is Allison Janney everyone's favorite? We are treated to a tour of the West Wing to fully understand the layout of the staff's offices and the dynamics of the characters in relationship to each other. Then, the decorations in the offices are explained, and nothing is so minor to be included by chance.

Sorkin claims he doesn't have a political agenda. He asks his staff to write a pro-con memo on each episode, and he is most comfortable when two people disagree. If the points are good, he incorporates them into the show's dialogue. You have to be a West Wing fan, and a pretty serious one at that, to fully appreciate this Official Companion, which brings to light the fine points of all that went into creating the first two seasons of this amazingly written and performed show.

5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting way of covering the show's first two seasons
I know that there is a collection of scripts from the first two season of "The West Wing," including the the Emmy Award-winning episode "In Excelsis Deo," but that only offers up a half dozen scripts. This volume is "The Official Companion" to the television series created by Aaron Sorkin and covers the first two seasons of the series in a rather interesting way. Each episode is given, on average, six pages, in which the episode is described in narrative format with choices quotations and exchanges of dialogue included.I have to admit I like this approach, because it saves fans of the show from going through dozens of pages of scripts to find their favorites lines (e.g., Sam's "This is bad on so many levels" from the Pilot episode).

These 44 episode summaries are enhanced in various ways throughout this volume. There are comments from Sorkin, the cast, and even a few real former West Wing staffers highlighted in the margins, usually talking specifically about the scene they appear next to on the page. You will also find references to alternate scenes that students of the show will find fascinating. There are even footnotes: Barlet might spare his senior staff list listing all fourteen of the punctuation marks in standard English grammar, but here they get named (along with the point that Toby only knew the last seven in the list). In between episodes at various points in the volume you will find profiles of the eight principle actors and insights into the show's creation and a photo tour of the West Wing.Consequently, "The West Wing" provides both a walk down memory lane and insights into the stories, characters, and actors.

"The West Wing" is a show where having all the scripts available in print might be a good thing, but it is not likely to happen. It took six volumes to put into print all of the scripts from the first two seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and that was with 10 less episodes than on "The West Wing."The series will probably end up in syndication on cable channels for eternity so we might never get it released on DVD either.A series of volumes covering all of the episodes in this manner, printed in two season increments, would be an acceptable substitute. ... I originally saw the Farnsworth Invention in its premiere in La Jolla in 2007, and bought this text to read it again. Product Description
Aaron Benjamin Sorkin (born June 9, 1961) is an American screenwriter, producer and playwright, whose works include A Few Good Men, The American President, The West Wing, Sports Night, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip and The Farnsworth Invention. After graduating from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre in 1983, Sorkin spent much of the 1980s in New York as a struggling, largely unemployed actor. He found his passion in writing plays, and quickly established himself as a young promising playwright. His stageplay A Few Good Men caught the attention of Hollywood producer David Brown, who bought the film rights before the play even premiered. Castle Rock Entertainment hired Sorkin to adapt A Few Good Men for the big screen. The movie, directed by Rob Reiner, became a box office success. Sorkin spent the early 1990s writing two other screenplays at Castle Rock, Malice and The American President ... Read more
