As cosy and comfortable as your well-worn slippers.
William Smith suffers from amnesia and also from often being pushed into the path of oncoming cars - ideas for plots frequently exploited in films and crime novels of this book's vintage, 1950.Who is doing the pushing, a man or a woman?Who is William Smith who has lost his memory?

Knitting together more coincidences than there are stitches on Miss Silver's knitting needles, Patricia Wentworth ravels out solutions to these mysteries in one of her most appealing crime novels.Miss Silver conducts investigations, coughing politely, always preferring "do not" to "don't" and advising and cautioning here and there.Dispensing coffee and cakes by the fire she explains all at the end.

Diana Bishop's warm, mellow reading of this novel was released in audio book form during 2006.

One of the best Miss Silver mysteries
Tight plot, good character development.This is one of Wentworth's best. One of the particular charms of the Miss Silver mysteries is the insight on post war London.This book tells a good story while reflecting an interest look on a different era.The mystery is obvious but the story is well told and has very interesting characters.Wentworth vividly describes people in a few words.Highly recommend.

One of the better Miss Silver puzzlers.
This effort of Miss Wentworth's was quite a good one.I enjoyed it as much or more than any of her other works.We have a case of amnesia, (which I must admit is believably done), and not one, but two wicked witches that we can take turns hating.Throw in a little financial skulduggery, and two young lovers that certainly deserve their happiness and you have a commendable cozy Miss Silver mystery.

I have read this book well over a dozen times and still love it every time. Any serious study of the LDS church should include this book.In fact almost every book that I have read about the early history of the church or early history of Joseph quotes from it directly.

One of the most important aspects of this book is the ability it gives the reader to look into the lives of the Smith family.The closeness that they held between one another comes out of the book.If you don't have this type of familial relationship in your life now, it gives you something to look forward to.The end of the book also details Mother Smith's anguish at the death of her sons Joseph, and Hyrum.

A treasure for "How it was written" enthusiasts
Much like the extra features on a DVD, this book provides a rare, inside glimpse into the creative process of novel writing. Even if you don't care for horror or perhaps The Exorcist itself, this book is a small but priceless view inside the process of conception to fruition. If you saw Eleanor Coppola's "Hearts of Darkness; A Filmmaker's Apocalypse," which was the documentary on how Francis Coppola made Apocalypse Now, then you'll LOVE this small 58-page gem.

It shows how an idea became a novel, in sumptuous detail. Don't worry about the religious overtones of the author; we are all allowed our personal beliefs, and Blatty does not give a sermon here. It's all about how a novel came into being, and it's a wonderful treat!

William Clayton is best remembered today for his hymns, especially "Come, Come Ye Saints." But as one of the earliest Latter-day Saint scribes, he made intellectual as well as artistic contributions to his church, and his records have been silently incorporated into official Mormon scripture and history. Of equal significance are his personal impressions of day-to-day activities, which describe a social and religious world largely unfamiliar to modern readers.In ministering to the sick, for instance, Clayton anointed with perfumed oil and rum. He performed baptisms to heal the sick. Church services, held irregularly, were referred to as "going to meeting" and seemed to be elective. He testifies of people speaking in tongues and of others "almost speaking in tongues." When introduced to plural marriage, he was reluctant but eventually became one of its most enthusiastic proponents, marrying ten women and fathering forty-two children.Since polygamy was initially secret, Clayton spent much of his time putting out the fires of innuendo and discontent. He caught his first plural wife rendezvousing with her former fiancé; later, when she became pregnant, her mother--his unaware mother-in-law--was so overwrought that she attempted suicide. Joseph Smith reassured him: "Just keep her at home and brook it and if they raise trouble about it and bring you before me I will give you an awful scourging and probably cut you off from the church and then I will set you ahead as good as ever." A well titled book
This book is exactly what the title says, an intimate chronicle. A great view into the beginnings of plural marriage in Nauvoo and the beginnings of the Council of Fifty. A little dry at times, but an easy read. Very interesting.

A step into the mind of the early church.
Imagine you could go back in time and step into Nauvoo, the trip across the plains, and early settlement of what is now Utah.This is the book.William Clayton was a personal scribe to Joseph Smith.He was converted in England, sailed accross the Atlantic, and almost instantly became an insider, and confidant to Joseph Smith once he arrived in Nauvoo.

He is very detailed in his journal, yet it almost reads like a story.The highlights include:Doing missionary work with some of the early church leaders including Brigham Young in England.His trip to America is tragic, with sickness and disease killing some of the passengers.The mormon voyagers join in "faith" with the belief they can "hold on" to those who are dying if they just can believe strong enough...they end up dissappointed.You get a real sense of the stength of their belief and the conviction of those willing to leave England for Zion.Upon arriving in Nauvoo he describes his conversations with Joseph Smith.He alludes to his early introduction to polygamy, when most in the church did not know it was being practiced.He marries a number of wives, and mentions many of Joseph's plural marraiges.The political issues facing the Saints are discussed, as well as the efforts to go West.He describes the sacrifice in preparing the Nauvoo temple, and has a month or more dedicated to describing the endowment of the Saints before leaving West.He gives a description of the organization of the pioneers when going west, and his own journey accross the plains.What I found very funny was the popularity of the mormon band as they travelled.Cities would pay the Mormon band (of which Clayton was a member) to play for them, and this helped fund the trip.I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to delve into the details of the early church practice and belief.What is so fun about history is seeing the world through someone else's eyes.His life was great and I really enjoyed the book.

Valuable information about early Mormon life
Clayton was the Prophet's meticulous secretary and confidant. Reading this book has given me fresh new insight into the ingenious mind of Joseph Smith as well as to the very turbulent times of the Saints during the 1840's in Nauvoo. Furthermore, Clayton documents early missionary work in Lancashire, England and the difficult voyage across to America with newly converted Latter Day saint families. The Man With All The Toys
There was little in life William Paley wanted and didn't get, with the notable exception of a laudatory and readable biography. Sally Bedell Smith performed half that service with "In All His Glory," published the same year Paley died (1990); you will be hard-pressed to find as juicy a book on a hundred more engaging personalities.

Paley built a radio-television empire with CBS, "the Tiffany Network" known for its much-touted commitment to quality broadcasting. While acquiring markets and talents was Paley's contribution to CBS's glory, it was secondary by Bedell Smith's reckoning to his more material passions for lucre, women, and fame. He got most of what he wanted, but as we watch him on his deathbed, it's hard not to feel a Calvinistic twinge of regret for his limited vision.

"Bill Paley wanted every last minute from life," Bedell Smith writes.

It's about the most positive thing she has to say about Paley, who otherwise doesn't come off either as visionary or a leader. He failed to see the promise of innovations like television, color television, and the long-playing record, and had to be coaxed to letting his subordinates take up these and other ideas for building his empire. Then when they achieved success, Paley swooped in and took credit. "The convenient amnesia of the powerful," Bedell Smith calls it.

Where Paley excelled was in the art of interpersonal relations, which contributed to some major deals for CBS and very few lonely evenings for Paley himself, even if his wives couldn't say the same.

Bedell Smith writes an engaging story about Paley's years at CBS, but it is in recounting his social life where the book excels. Paley was born Jewish, and spent the rest of his life trying to pretend otherwise. Even as other Jews formed their own high-level Manhattan social circle, "Our Crowd, " Paley preferred to court the Mayflower set, a fast-dying clique of Long Island dinosaurs who imagined themselves better than the rest of mankind for the money they inherited.

One British noblewoman who ran with this set described Paley as "100 percent Jew but looking more like good news from Tartary," nicely encapsulating the jaded, facile, anti-Semitic waters Paley willingly navigated.

Readers looking for more of a history of CBS may be vaguely disappointed. Paley was seen as an "absentee landlord" by network insiders, leaning on Frank Stanton and other executives to run the shop while he globetrotted. Bedell Smith leaves the trail of the network for many long chapters at a stretch, to focus on Paley's marriages and affairs.

The problem with this shows with her loving depiction of wife number two, Babe Cushing, a glamorous clotheshorse. Bedell Smith describes Babe's look and surroundings in overrich detail, at one point itemizing the contents of her closets for half a page. Bedell Smith obviously treasures Babe more than Paley himself ever did, an imbalance that threatens to lose the reader from time to time.

But Babe is an interesting mirror to view Paley from, an empire builder in her own right who left nothing in the way of a legacy but gaudy baubles and mixed memories about what it all meant. As she lay dying of cancer, an unnamed intimate tells Bedell Smith: "She had not a glimmer of having a soul." It's a comment with more than religious meaning.

For Paley, too, the world was all there was, and immortality something only worth having if he was around to enjoy it. He built an empire, only to hang on too long and preside over its crumbling, even facilitate it when his hand-picked successor failed to show him the proper deference. Ephemerality is the nature of mass media, and in that way at least, Paley proved its perfect embodiment.

Inaccurate
This book is not only unremittingly malicious in tone,
but well known as being inaccurate, sloppily put together,
and a book whose author clearly had an agenda in depicting
Paley as some kind of monster of evil. A bad book that
leaves you feeling bad.

Thorough Inspection of a Fascinating Man
Author Sally Bedell Smith does her typically excellent job with IN ALL HIS GLORY, her biography of William Paley. Smith is known for her scholarship and her research, and it shows in this book.

Like many self-made successful people, Paley led an interesting life. Smith chronicles his original involvement with the nascent television industry as his interest grew into the empire he built surrounding CBS.

This is an important book for anyone interested in the development of that industry. As well, it is a fascinating peek into Paley's life. Here was a man who moved from the ghetto life of a child of 19th century European immigrants to becoming one of America's power elite. Once he was rich, he lived his life accordingly.

His journey makes for fascinating reading.

Upclose Look at Media Giant
This book has been out for as long as it has, and no reviews? It's been about five or six years since I've read it, but this volume is a must-read for anyone considering a career in broadcasting, or if you're interested in the building of a corporate empire.
The book takes us from Paley's somewhat well-to-do background and takes us, in all his glory, (which the book's author uses sarcastically), from cigar maker to the head of one of the most powerful corporations in American history, what used to be CBS, Inc.
The book doesn't necessarily portray Paley as a sympathetic character, but more of a small man who made it big. There's a heavy emphasis on the warts of the man, which may be somewhat understandable, since prior to this book's release, he was always presented as a man to be totally revered. But here he's portrayed as someone who likes to take credit for other's doings, as someone who plays petty head games with people such as Frank Stanton, and uses his on-air talent (Ed Murrow, for one) while it's convenient, and then when they're of no use to him anymore, casts them aside.
Despite the type of man Paley is presented as, this book is a very good chronicle of his career, which means it also is one of the definitive books on the creation of CBS. No matter what his personal flaws were, this is a man who did the impossible by challenging NBC to create the even more successful CBS radio network and then dominated television for roughly 20 years.The building of that empire with the "talent raids" of Amos 'n' Andy, Jack Benny, and others is vital reading for anyone who is in the broadcasting industry.What's even more essential, however, is watching the ideas and motivations that took the Columbia Broadcasting System to CBS, Inc, and how it lost focus as it became a corporate behemoth.
Paley's death came several years before Westinghouse, and then Viacom, would acquire CBS, and having read this book, you can only imagine what he would have thought about how that played out.
One final note, while the book is lengthy, it's a breeze-through read. Once you get started, you won't put it down. ... Read more

an interesting but difficult study
This book is really different.The author delves into the etymological background of the word "belief", and the way the sense of the word has changed.He doesn't use the same approach to language as Wittgenstein and Austin, but his results are striking.If I undesrtand him correctly Smith is saying the word "belief" has changed meaning over the last few centuries, until it has lost most of its original sense.Smith maintains that the word "belief" once conveyed absolute certainty, whereas today it conveys doubt, or hesitation at best.He seems to make a pretty good case for his thesis. Smith prefers the use of "faith" because he feels that "faith" conveys the feeling of absolute certainty and total commitment.He seems to feel that using the word "belief" to convey our religious ideas weakens them at the very start of our discussions.
Smith has a maddening habit of using absolutely huge footnotes, that are nearly as long as the text itself.If you can bear with this fault you'll find this is a relly interesting book.I'm reading his book on religion and it present the same virtues and faults.

West Federal Taxation
West Federal Taxation was a textbook for a class I was taking in preparation for the Certified Financial Planner's Exam.While I got an A in the course, it was no thanks to this text book.In some areas the text seemed to ramble and skip around a lot making the subject matter difficult to comprehend.Then again, we are talking about the bureaucratic nightmare that is the US Tax Code.I found I needed to supplement the material in this book with tutorial materials I found on the IRS website to gain better comprehension.If you're stuck using West Federal Taxation as a textbook I would suggest you become familiar with the IRS website to really learn the subject matter.

I never received the book.Just a refund b/c it was out of stock.
About 1 1/2 weeks after I purchased the book, I received an email from the seller stating that the book is out of stock and he will refund me.
I had to drop my class b/c of this and I willnever order a school textbook on Amazon again.

Wrong textbook for school.
The book in and of itself is great. It is not the correct book for school. It does not come with turbo tax and RIA checkpoint cd's. You will need each of these student versions too complete your assignments. Thompson publishing offers the full version for about the same amount of money.

Good condition por the price but....
The delivery of the book was fast, the book was in perfect conditions, BUT it did not include the CD (turbo tax softare) so just pay attention when ordering a book to make sure it comes with all the necessary.
