5-0 out of 5 stars Let's talk about....
I really enjoy and recommend the entire "Let's Talk About..." series. They are above all concise and make it easy for you to explain to your child WHY a particular behavior is bad and shouldn't be continued.Bear in mind, however, that a child under four isn't really going to get it anyway and probably won't retain the information, so you may as well be talking to a wall.I recommend these for preschool and young elementary school age children.Any younger and they won't understand it, any older and they will (correctly) feel that these are "baby books."

4-0 out of 5 stars another good self help book by Joy Berry
5/22/03 The book " Needing Attention"(copyright 1996) explains to the child(ren) why they might feel the need to get attention;reviews the wrong ways they might do so(e.g. complaining, tattling, teasing) and the right ways to get attention without actually saying the words "I'd like some attention".Some of the others(now out of print by Berry from the "Help Me Be Good Series"copyright 1988) use the same method in helping the child(ren) to understand ways to correct such habits as individual books on Tattling,Lying,Interrupting,Throwing Tantrums,Teasing,Fighting,Breaking Promises,Being Bossy,Being Bullied..There are more to the out-of print series which can sometimes "show-up" at community flea markets as did the ones I purchased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent book.
Buy it before it goes out of print!I have two books in this series and would like to purchase more but they are OUT OF PRINT.
This is one of the few books that teaches children about developing good character traits without being preachy or condescending (or resorting to "fairy tales" - - things that happened in a faraway place and time which have no bearing on today). The children can relate and they enjoy the stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellant

Books can be for silly times or quiet, for reading alone or sharing . . . but always to enjoy. A small child discovers their magic for the very first time in this exuberant ode to book appreciation by award-winning poet Kristine O"Connell George. Brightly colored illustrations are a perfect match for the spare, rhyming text, and thick pages with rounded corners make this a special first "real" book for baby. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
My daughter got this for her first birthday and still loves this book nearly 4 months later. The colors are bright, the illustrations engaging, and the lesson that books are fun is a good one. I really think she learned what "upside down" means from this book (the little boy talks about reading the book upside down), and the part where he puts it on his head "like a hat" is one of her favorite parts that she always likes to act out. You and your little one won't be disapointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alright.
Although this boardbook had many pages to it, the pictures were not varied enough to be very interesting.Basically, this little boy carries a book around with him for the entire day. Each page show him doing something different with the book against a gradient colored background. And, there is a cat that comes and goes through the story. Not much more to say.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Instant Favorite!
We got this book from the library a couple of weeks ago, and it has become my 19-month old's favorite. He loves it so much that he will be getting his own copy for Christmas. He loves books, and so he really relates to the story. He especially likes it when the boy in the story puts the book on his head and then I put the "Book!" on HIS head. He always gives a big smile. One warning, though, don't get this book unles you like reading the same book with your little one over, and over, and over again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had Run Across This Sooner - a review of "Book"
We are a home of book lovers. When my first child was born she had books waiting for her, and I wish this had been one of them.

I really like the pro-book stance this author takes. And the delight that the boy has in his *own* book is obvious from the illustrations.

He takes it everywhere with him.Has fun 'reading' it on his own, putting in the shelf all by himself. He even reads it to his cat and shows it to his baby sister/brother.

Four Stars.A sturdy little book that shows book ownership in a positive light.Good addition to a baby or toddlers library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adorable!
Kristine O'Connell George does a beautiful job sharing the joy of a first book with readers young and old.The illustrations are colorful!Really a joy to read.I recently checked it out from the library to share with my 11 month old and she will be receiving her own copy for her first birthday. It is perfect for toddlers because of its stiff and easy to turn pages and rounded corners. Enjoy! ... Read more

Product Description

Full of the language and lore of the Gypsies, this remarkable memoir offers insight into the Romani way of life from an insider’s perspective. Maggie Smith-Bendell shares stories from her traditional Gypsy childhood in the rural South of England, from traveling the countryside and facing hardships, such as the death of a family member, to catching wild animals and earning a living from the woods, hedgerows, and fieldwork in the area. Moving and inspiring, this account also reflects upon the changes in the law and agriculture that have undermined the Gypsies’ sense of freedom and have contributed to the author’s position as a prominent campaigner for Gypsy rights. Filled with traditional recipes, crafts, old songs, and Romani words, this record includes the knowledge and skills that have been passed on from generation to generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandchild Loved It
I had this book shipped to my two year old grandson in Arizona. When I got out there and read it to him it quickly became his favorite. Each time I would finish it he would say, "More."We must have read it four times in a row!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice-- do not buy!
I bought this book to try to help my three year old son transition easily from his crib to his big boy bed.I wish I had read some of the reviews before I WASTED my money on this book. The little boy in this book shows how he can jump on his bed, and get out of his bed even when he is supposed to be sleeping. What was this author thinking???Perhaps the author will make a sequel called my first trip to the emergency room... jumping on the bed is not safe!I gave this book one star only because it is the lowest rating, I would have preferred to give it zero stars.Buy the Elmo book instead. It is short, sweet, and best of all safe.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Okay
Two things I did not love about this book - it talks about jumping on the big boy bed (something I would assume most parents - myself included - do NOT want their kids encouraged to do) AND it talks about getting out of the big boy bed and going to disturb baby sister in her crib down the hall - not sure I like that idea either, but other than that, it's a cute story about getting a big boy bed and leaving the crib behind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big Help with our Big Transition
What a cute book! The pages and the tone are very upbeat which was a big help to us as we transitioned our son from his crib to his big boy bed.Instead of wailing and crying every night out of fear from the new change, as many of my friends reported, we had a relatively painless transition.

I do agree that the author was a little bit silly to suggest jumping on the new bed or getting out of bed; but, like a previous reviewer, I used those suggestions to teach my son what NOT to do.I say, "Look, this little boy is being naughty crawling out of his bed!We do NOT crawl out of our beds, do we?No.That's naughty to do that!"And so on.Sometimes the best way to teach a child what to do is by showing him what NOT to do.(See, "David Gets in Trouble.")

Other than that one small issue, though, the book itself is a favorite for both of us and doesn't drag on like some choices out there. The illustrations are lovely--adequately represented by the vivid cover.

I was very surprised to see the rating here wasn't higher. When I read the review, I did agree with the idea of it, but not the rating. I think the book deserves at least three and for me, four stars, which is what I gave it.It's an excellent read and the illustrations are beautiful. The fact that it has a functional objective--assisting with the big bed transition--makes it all the more star-worthy.Besides, I suspect kids are naturally filled with enough curiosity to get out of bed from time to time, and enough salt to jump on the bed regardless of Mom's strongest admonitions.I certainly remember being so! ;)

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute Book
My 3 year old loves this book.I do agree with the other 2 reviewers, but what my husband and I have done when we read it is add to it things like when it talks about jumping on the bed "but I shouldn't do that becausse it is dangerous" and when he gets out of bed whenever he wants "but I know if I do, I'll get into big trouble with mommy and daddy."Luckily, he can't read yet so for right now it works. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULLY MAGICAL!!!
I first read this book in elementary school over 10 years ago. It had such an impact on my memory that I recently bought it off of Amazon.com (...).It was worth it...I re-read it a decade later and had more fun with it this time than before! The story is about 3 children who are transported to an island through the means of a picture hanging in their house. It's full of adventure, fantasy, and excitement. As a child, I dreamed of being one of these characters, being able to escape to a secret island and explore all day and night!
