90. The Subject Was Roses
by Frank D. Gilroy

5-0 out of 5 stars Tense, emotional, ever-changing moods, excellent
Frank Gilroy's excellent drama has garnered Pulitzer Prize in 1964 and a Tony Award. Set in the Bronx, NY, 1946, the play unfolds with creeping intensity to reveal the story of a man, his wife and son who endure pain and sadness as members of an unhappy, strained family.

Although the play does have a few dramatic moments, the gift is in the ordinary simple dialogue that reveals the depth of the dysfunctional family. The excellence is in the very realistic dialogue! Gilroy has captured the mannerism of ordinary, simple day-to-day communication in a family especially when, at times, two people communicating with one another but without really communicating with one another. There are no grand monologues, just enough dialogue that reflects the way we really speak with few words and phrases.

Middle aged, John Cleary and his wife Nettie are enjoying the return of their 21-year son, Timmy, from the war after three years. John has had a lot of missed opportunities in life, has cheated and never been a loving father or husband.

John secretly admires his son's uniform and the accomplishments, but cops an attitude on veterans, since he was unable to himself serve, another of his missed opportunities.

Wife Nettie holds a grudge too, for past indiscretions of her husband too. We soon learn the failures and disappointments that become the foundation of a marriage that eventually lead to the dysfunction of the son who gets caught in the middle of the discontent and tension three years after this duty in the army. Quite a bit happens in this two act play with frequently changing moods, tension, etc.

One challenge I have with plays is to find the title of the play "The Subject Was Roses" in the text. I see it as the Roses representing the marriage and the whole crux of marital turmoil.

Jack Albertson and Charlie Sheen acted together onstage in 1964, however, the play takes place in 1946. The two also performed in the movie version, The Subject Was Roses. Have not watched it yet, but hopefully it is as well as the book. ...Rizzo

5-0 out of 5 stars About those roses..
The praises that greeted Frank D. Gilroy's Who'll Save the Plowboy? were repeated a hundredfold upon the arrival of The Subject was Roses.

This volume contains not only the complete text of the play but makes a unique contribution to theatre literature in the "log" that is here called About Those Roses.

This consists of those entries in Mr. Gilroy's journal which show the course of the development of the production, from his first efforts through the successful opening. It should be invaluable to aspiring playwrights, actors, and directors; and it will certainly prove to be something of a revelation to producers and backers of theatre in America in its explosive attack on their assumptions about the star system and excessively expensive productions.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books.
One thing I always have a problem with when reviewing books is that I don't want to spoil it for you, the reader. I want to recommend the book, but it's difficult to tell you *why* I recommend it.

With "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane", I can only say that it's a great novel of suspense, mystery, adolescent love, intelligence, and even a little horror. It's one of my favorite novels because it paints a picture that I find enchanting; An adolescent girl in the 1970s who lives by her own rules, and is smart enough to fend for herself. She's a kindred spirit, Rynn is. I admire her, and yet I pity her predicament. I can relate, in a strange way, to what she goes through. I can *feel* her loneliness, and yet I can also see her determination and drive to be alone if that's what it takes to survive.

I also remember feeling love as strongly as she does, and envy that first love feeling she feels that is so well-described in this book.

The movie that was inspired by this book is also one of my favorites, but it changes many things- Most notably, it makes Rynn a lot less British, and a lot more innocent than she is in the novel.

You can't go wrong with this book, especially at the used price. I urge all readers to give it a go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I read this book after having seen the movie and I loved it! The only drawback is that, after reading it, you wonder what happens to Rynn later! Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Survivor
I saw the movie when I was 15 on some cable channel back in the 90s and saw who I wanted to be in the character of Rynn (the "rhynn" in my email addy is in honor of her).Because of the movie, I found the book and also discovered Emily Dickinson. The movie, one of my favorites, is outdone by the book (which I've read several times).

The book and movie were originally done in the 70s, but I think this is not a problem at all.I still loved it.This should also appeal to the "ghosts" (people who try to stay invisible to society) and "moles" (fake being part of it) of any age and gender out there, who refuse to let their spirits be broken and owned by the impersonal and unedifying forces of the vapid masses and malicious control freaks that haunt our world. This is also a book where the heroine (and later accomplice) overcome adversity by cleverness (and admittedly some ruthlessness, but their enemies are just as ruthless) rather than by dramatic fights, which is refreshing in and of itself, IMO.It combines mystery and suspense and romance, spiced with many creepy secrets.

I recently had a dream where I saw a modern remake of the movie and nearly woke up in my excitement.I've since started rereading the book and I still love it.This is one of my all-time favorites, and I read it again every October.

5-0 out of 5 stars Over ten years later and this book still delivers
I first read "The Little Girl Who Lived Down the Lane" as a junior in high school. And I recently had the distinct pleasure of tracking down a used version.

Nearly fifteen years later, this book still effectively delivers.

Koenig has crafted a rarity. It is a tense, suspenseful narrative that never relies on theatrics or histrionics to raise the reader's unease. The book is short - one suspects that it can be read in a sitting - but the book leaves a lasting impact once finished.

The narrative shifts between several characters. But the main - and memorable - protagonist is Rynn.Rynn is a young woman who a reader is unsure to be rooting for or apprehensive of.

Throughout the book, she displays extraordinary resource and tightly wound emotions - but her voice and feelings are telegraphed in away that seems thoroughly convincing and realistic. And although Rynn is the main character to which all other others rotate around, the reader is put into the perspective of the satellite characters.

To summarize the novel, unfortunately, would be to give away the ending. The theme and questions, however, are simple.Young Rynn is harboring a secret in the house she and her father have rented in a quiet New England hamlet.

What is the secret? And why is Rynn so determined to protect this secret it all costs?

Internal narrative is Koenig's strong suit.Emotions, particularly Rynn's, seem genuine and realistically developed. Not once are there illogical jumps in character or story development.

The one caveat is that book takes place in the mid-1970s - so many situations have to be read with a grain of salt because they would never be allowed to occur in the present day.

If you are searching for a page-turner of a suspenseful nature - this book is highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Out of print but worth looking for.
I was so excited to get a copy of this out-of-print book after having not read it since I was about twelve. (I'm a real grown up now.)This is an excellent teen novel, but I would recommend it to anyone who loves reading--it really is very good. Not perfect--it does fall apart a little at the end, but the ending works, only it really left me wanting more.Although it is actually a "teen" novel, some of the subject matter is pretty mature and the relationships are satisfyingly complicated. Aside from the horrible Hallets, who are very well-drawn villains, the budding love affair between Rynn and Mario is very sweet and actually quite touching.I think the book is miles better than the movie starring Jodie Foster, although I remember liking the movie the last time I saw it (more than 20 years ago)! ... Product Description
The most compelling way to learn to love anything is to realize how close you are to losing it. How deep into the depths of despair must author Joel Lee Russell descend before he learns to open his body, mind and soul to the magnificence of devotion and faith? After surviving a tortured childhood, Russell's challenges continue when he arrives in Vietnam during the height of the Tet Offensive.

While Russell's outfit of Marines dwindles from 250 men to 79 in a matter of four hours, he beseeches God to save him and promises to dedicate his life, from that moment on, to something greater than himself. Even though we think we are eager to learn our lessons and to improve ourselves, the training we endure is often complicated and challenging. After Joel Lee Russell, nicknamed “Last Days Joel,” repeatedly escapes death’s sting, he opens himself to a divine beauty that soars beyond his belief.

Author Joel Lee Russell was born in 1948. He is the eleventh child and the seventh son in a family with 12 children. Throughout his upbringing, he suffered brutality that would have tested the strongest of men. When Russell wrote his memorable autobiography, Book of Joel – Book II, he was laying the foundation for his current work, Escaping Death’s Sting. Russell earned a Purple Heart and a Navy Achievement Medal for his daring acts in Vietnam. He now lives in Bonney Lake, Washington.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eye opener
Sonny Bronson has created an eye opener for anyone who has been trapped by sexual molestation, predation, or other types of aberrant behavior. The book has an interesting interplay to set the stage for revelations of how those who molest are often molested themselves and continue a downward spiral of abuse from one generation to the next. For many this book will be hard to read because it will strike home in a way that only a first person account can. However, the reader is not left with a sense of hopelessness but rather a ray of light that there is a way out of sexual perversion.Having counseled many individuals who have this problem, I think that they will find a source of inspiration in this book.Be warned, Sonny does not pull any punches in his descriptions and this would not be a good read for youngsters, but for those who think that there is no way out, here is a story of a man who escaped to a better life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't "put this book down" until I finished it!
If you or someone you know think you could be addicted to anything, not just sex, then I highly recommend you read this book. I found it to be very well written, (At the beginning of it I almost thought I was watching a movie as the writer goes into such details). It definitely gets you hooked and you cannot put it down, you want to finish it, especially if you are looking for help in overcoming addictions, whether it's for yourself or someone you love, get this book and there's no doubt you can get help for your addictions! I am sure it is not like any other self help book you have ever read on addictions! Read it and then post a review like I did, I am curious to see what others think about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Put on your SEAT BELT!!
This is a must read for anyone battling with an addiction, especially sexual addiction/pornography. It is detailed and real. And like it says up front, don't let children under 18 read this book. If you want to know how people get twisted and how that twisting turns them in the wrong directions, then you need to read this. I especially enjoyed the spiritual aspects of recovery and restoration. There is a strong spiritual base to this book, but it is a easy read for the not so spiritual. Every bit worth the ten bucks and I recommend it to all who have or know someone who has addictive personality disorders of any type. Happy Reading! ... Read more
