Product Description
Everything has changed about work except how we go about finding it. Our reliance on the use of traditional job search techniques in a work environment that has dramatically changed is the equivalent of "fighting the last war" with disappointing, even disastrous, results. Most of us sense this, but we don't know what else to do.

This book is a clear, concise guide to a new kind of work security, one that is not dependent on any particular job, but on your own capacity to generate work. It offers a compelling rationale for why it is necessary to change your thinking and provides practical steps, supported by real life stores, for taking action.

From the Author's Preface:

"Several years ago, I did a workshop for a group of Bentley College alumni. Right after we finished lunch, just before we started back again, someone expressed frustration with the inefficiency and wastefulness of traditional job-search practices, and I made the offhand remark, 'If I had my way, people would throw out their resumes and stop networking.'

"An electric charge went through the room. Thirty business professionals, some a few years out of college, others farther along in their careers, all of them well-versed in traditional job-search, came alive.

"Somebody had actually said out loud what they instinctively knew, that trying to find work the way we currently go about it is unproductive, frustrating, humiliating, and often downright awful.

A career expert was telling them that it was not only acceptable but also entirely appropriate for them to feel as they did, and it was as if they heaved a collective sigh of relief. 'Maybe it's not us,' they thought, 'maybe it's the methods themselves that aren't working.'

I wished I could have put aside the agenda I planned for the afternoon to pursue the subject with them. What I suspect would have happened is that they would have told me they follow traditional job-search practices because they don't know what else to do.

Not being able to answer the question, "What do I do instead?" is the reason people looking for work keep doing the same things and expecting different, less disappointing results.

This book was written to answer that question. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
I received a copy of Ground Of Your Own Choosing after attending an entrepreneurship seminar at my local chamber of commerce. After which it sat on my shelf for about three months. I was interested in reading it, however I had many others ahead of this one. In hindsight I really wish I would have picked it up earlier. This happened with another book I had read - Mans Search for Meaning which I place in the same category of must-read - the type of book that you want to run out and tell all your friends about and start using the advice within.

Ground Of Your Own Choosing is simply amazing and life-changing. If you are an entrepreneur or an employee who has been effected by the recent economy (which the author refers to as a workquake) you absolutely must read this book.

This is one of those books that's tough to put down once you get started, which is atypical for a career book. The author's advice is unconventional throughout the book, which is relevant in that we are certainly in unconventional times.

The author's guidance is clear through the book and she provides some great analogies by which to solidify her points. Each chapter opens with a quote, which isn't all that different from other business books. However, what is unique is that I found each quote to be profound and resonate with my life experience. While reading Ground Of Your Own Choosing I found myself sharing many of the points with my friends and colleagues so they may benefit as well. A great deal of thought and effort went into creating this book.

The only downside I could find is that I wish this was strictly a book on entrepreneurship and not geared towards job-seekers. However, this is not the author's fault as she clearly states her education and experience as a career counselor and the target audience of the book - this is just something I would like to see in the future, perhaps as a sequel. Probably more selfishness on my part. As an entrepreneur I may not have picked up this book if I had not received it at the seminar - and I certainly would have missed out.

I really cannot say enough good things about Ground Of Your Own Choosing. It receives my highest possible recommendation and I plan on recommending it to my friends, colleagues, other entrepreneurs, and those who may be in the midst of a life transition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ways to STAND OUT in a crowd of job seekers
What a wonderful find! Ms. Ryle's book is a concise, easily accessible, step-by-step guide that helps you effectively navigate the turbulent waters of job seeking.I coach both senior executives who are looking for new hires and clients who are looking for new jobs: Ms. Ryle beautifully addresses both the internal examination and external steps that, once taken, naturally lead you toward creating work that is a perfect expression of your unique talents, style and interests. You will also learn how to replace stale, ineffective networking techniques with a process that creates an ever-expanding community of like-minded peers and mentors . . . who, by the way, will give you "warm introductions" and referrals that are much more likely to yield invitations for interviews.I have used Ms. Ryle's techniques to better refine a new consulting service for my own business, and I recommend her book wholeheartedly.

Beverly Sastri, LIVE like YOU MEAN it! workshops and keynotes

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding Work - not a Job
"Networking" seems to be such a popular business word these days, but for some it can be a push to collect as many business cards as possible.Once you have them, what do you do - are you really connected to all these people?Beverly talks about "community building" instead of "networking."It takes more effort to build a community than to collect business cards, but the results will be enormously better.

Beverly discusses people in the pre-industrial revolution era.She says they were "free agents," not holders of "jobs," and she believes we are moving back in that direction. We're being forced to change our way of thinking!

She has many ideas and examples in her book, and my favorite is on pages 118-119 where she gives a remarkable idea of how to approach an interview (search for work). You approach it as a "business-to-business exchange."You are not an interviewee - you are a peer who is presenting your services and capabilities. These two pages alone make Bev's book valuable!

Read this book if you want to get away from the 'what size should my resume font be?' mentality.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Loved this Book!
Excellent guide to creating work!Beverly Ryle is right on target about the realities of today's shifting workplace and the new ways we need to think about our place in it.She points the way to the freedom we can gain by responding creatively to job loss.Subtitled `Winning Strategies for Finding & Creating Work, Ryle offers up to these times advice on writing resumes, marketing letters, and discovering your inner entrepreneur.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly inspiring, easy-to-use, pragmatic career advice
As a career coach, I see tons of books on this subject, but have yet to see one combine inspiration with practicality so elegantly and concisely. She keenly addresses the on-the-street issues of today's job seekers with stories anyone can relate to.Beverly's business insight and spot-on approach will encourage any reader to not only feel inspired but want to use her suggestions and results-based tools.
I can't remember the last time I've hi-lighted a career book as much as this one. For anyone who says "What do I do instead" of resume writing and networking, read this book. The world of work has forever changed and this is a "must have" for anyone who wants to finally take control of their career.
