On Target -- more or less
I am very much a "black versus white" thinker.I don't believe much in "gray" areas in life.You make either right or wrong choices and must live with and/or rectify the results.This is much of what Dr. Laura is about, from what I read in this book.

I enjoyed learning more about her and her style.I don't think I have heard her radio shows and was interested when I saw this book offered.I have to say the author Tom Allen was fair in his writing about her.He compares her thoughts and comments with the Bible and I found this refreshing and thought-provoking.There really needs to be more people willing to tell the hard truths in this immoral world.Why are we so afraid to call wrong wrong?No one wants to take a stand for moral right anymore.Dr. Laura does!And I appreciate and applaud it.

I thought the book was very good reading and I would definitely recommend it to others.May it make all us think about the choices we make and what they mean down the road in life.

Wasn't What I Thought
I found this book at Goodwill, and the cover and description made it sound like it would be more of a biographical book about Dr. Laura. However, I got 90 pages (out of 208) through, and discovered that there is little biographical information. Almost all of it is an evaluation of Dr. Laura's principles and whether they match the Christian Bible's principles.

I am not interested in reading that, so I stopped. However, if that is actually the angle YOU are interested in reading about, it's probably a pretty thorough covering of the subject.

And in response to the review that talked about biology vs. morality, and that children are now hitting puberty at earlier ages, I just hope that reviewer doesn't have children, because if they do, they will be unleashing an adult on us that is only driven by what they feel like doing at any given moment. We already have a world (and prisons) full of those adults. Please, we don't need any more!

Unrealistic
Dr. Laura has some interesting ideas on "Abstaining" from sexoutside of marriage and keeping children in the dark about it. Herpreaching "sounds" good, but her standards of morality are incomplete conflict with our biological reality.In Biblical times (and evenin our own timespan a hundred years ago), children did not reach pubertyuntil mid to late teens (which generally corresponded with the age theymarried).Now, with better nutrition and medicine, children generallyenter puberty around the age of 12 or 13.We live in a society thatencourages education and college, which means that the age of marriage formost people would be early to mid 20's.That means that Dr. Laura isadvocating that a person who is sexually mature do absolutely nothing aboutit for a period of 9 or 10 years!When standards of morality conflict withbiological reality, something will eventually "give" and my betis on the morality.

a very insightful evangelical perspective on dr. laura
Tom Allen writes with solid evangelical convictions.He does not endorese Schlessinger on every issue, but is overall, affirming of her prophetic stances.The author has had access to Dr. Laura and his views fairlyrepresent where she is at.This book is a "SHOULD" read.

Looking for permanent employment as an unlicensed shrink
This book tries to make the case that "homosexuality" can be "cured."I am not sure that the author is aware that the Kinsey Institute still holds a $5,000 cash reward for the first substantiated case of a change in sexual orientation.

Aside from that: although the author claims expertise, I am not sure that he can do elementary arithmetic.Let's try some: in very round numbers, there are 6 billion people on the planet, which gives us 3 billion males.The lowest estimate of the incidence of male homosexuality is around 2 percent, while the highest estimate is 10 percent.That means there are somewhere between 60 million and 300 million gay men on the planet.That is to say, the low estimate gives us the population of France, while the high estimate gives us the population of the USA.

Now, even if you grant the absurd premise that sexual orientation can be "cured," just how many "caregivers" would it take to "cure" 150 million people, with more being born every minute?

Sounds like a bid for permanent employment to me, plus an attempt to put another clamp on that pesky thing, human freedom.

The Death Penalty for Being Gay and HIV Positive? Uganda Mulls It

"Proposed legislation would impose the death penalty for some gay Ugandans, and their family and friends could face up to seven years in jail if they fail to report them to authorities."

"Anyone who 'aids, abets, counsels or procures another to engage of acts of homosexuality' faces seven years in prison if convicted. Landlords who rent rooms or homes to homosexuals also could get seven years and anyone with 'religious, political, economic or social authority' who fails to report anyone violating the act faces three years."

"The measure was proposed in Uganda following a visit by leaders of U.S. conservative Christian ministries that promote therapy for gays to become heterosexual."

"The Ugandan group [that is sponsoring the proposed law] has reportedly cited the work of Richard Cohen, an unlicensed American psychotherapist who believes homosexuality can be 'cured.'"

"Uganda is not the only country considering anti-gay laws. Nigeria, where homosexuality is already punishable by imprisonment or death, is considering strengthening penalties for activities deemed to promote it. Burundi just banned same-sex relationships and Rwanda is considering it."


Authors are generally not legally responsible for the use or misuse to which their works may be put (moral responsibility is another question); however Mr. Cohen can be said without the slightest hesitation or apology to be a facilitator of genocide.

According to a report airing on MSNBC on December 9, 2009, Mr. Cohen's organization, the "International Healing Foundation" (sic[k]), dispatched an emissary to Uganda to advise and assist the Ugandan legislator who drafted this draconian (and totalitarian) law.

In response to worldwide uproar, it appears the proposed law may be stripped of its clauses mandating capital punishment (leaving its grotesque invasion of privacy and totalitarian curbs on free speech intact) Also, Mr. Cohen averred the previous night on MSNBC that the death penalty was not what he had in mind at all. Unfortunately, unless this television interview reaches a significant number of Ugandans, it is moot.

There is no principle of morality, no doctrine of theology, no rule of ethics; that can ever possibly excuse Mr. Cohen's actions in this matter. I earnestly request that Amazon.com withdraw Mr. Cohen's book from sale. It is one thing to offer copies of "Mein Kampf" for sale now that Hitler is nearly 65 years dead; it is quite another thing to offer this book, which demonstrably provides a pretext for murder--by courts or vigilantes--and whose author is now stamped indelibly with the mark of Cain. Failing this, I would ask that they use their editorial discretion to ensure that these words remain available on this webpage in perpetuity. Misguided people who may think of purchasing this book must know of the dark motives that underlie it, and the use to which it has been put. This despite its saccharine avowals of 'compassion' for gays--now revealed as pure deceit. Evil that kills without a troubled conscience must be exposed for what it is.

Coming Out Straight is Like...
coming out as a dog.The author of this book has no credentials besides religion on which to base his 'theories.'That being said, he is also partially responsible for the proposed genocidal legislation in Uganda to put to death all homosexuals.If you buy this book, you are giving money to a dangerous religious extremist, and an idiot.Sad, pathetic and bereft of morals; there is a speeding bus with this guy's name on it somewhere, he should do us all a favor and go find it.

A Non-Christian Gives Simplistic Advice To Christians
Found this book used before the hype about Dr. Laura being a physiologist not a psychologist. Although the advice and benefits on Stay home mothers makes perfect since, who wouldn't want that option, the work force doesn't not make for a Family Friendly system-Wealthy or not. One has to question the authencity of a known hypocrite (see websites on the Dr. Laura in the Buff). I got a since of sour cynicism in the books tone and a diehard unforgiving conviction. I wouldn't recommend taking advice from someone taunting "high" morals while she herself doesn't practice what she "preaches". On a scale from one to 10. Hmmm. I give it a 1 do by it used to see for yourself if your still not convinced she unfit for the books title.

Okay!
There really is nothing edifying about sanctifying America's Best-known hypocrite! While Pastor Ray (writing from a very biassed position, in not just faith, but from being a buddy of Laura's), provides mere opinion andconjecture - (which this book ultimately is), Victoria Bane's book on theREAL Dr Laura, deals with incontrovertible facts.

Dr laura : TheUnauthorized Biography by Victoria Bane is a much better read. Fans ofLaura must read that book in order to be objective.

Great way to learn what you cherish about your faith!
What a great little book. It's packed with valuable information for anyone wishing to understand how our lives intertwine with God's word. The author really knows his stuff.I especially liked chapter 4, page 76"Imperial Selfs as a Standard." The retelling of a Calvin andHobbs classic reminded me of my old thinking before the Bible. And afterreading page 79, I thank God for sending Grandma Ida Mae. Thanks for thelessons!

Yes they still count
While the Ten Commandments are a series of laws, they were the ten laws given unto Moses by God Himself. There are numerous laws that were inspired by God but created by man throughout the early books of the Old Testament but these were the essential laws of God to his people.
