Excerpt: Sir Stephen Tyrone Colbert, KSJ, DFA, (pronounced ; born on May 13, 1964) is an American political satirist, writer, comedian and television host. He is the host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, a satirical news show in which Colbert portrays a caricatured version of conservative political pundits. Colbert originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met famed Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the critically acclaimed sketch comedy series Exit 57. Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. He gained considerable attention for his role on the latter as closeted, gay history teacher Chuck Noblet. It was his work as a correspondent on Comedy Central's news-parody series The Daily Show, ho...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=335195 ... Read more

Excerpt: Christopher Julius "Chris" Rock III (born February 7, 1965) is an American comedian, actor, screenwriter, television producer, film producer and director. He was voted as the fifth greatest stand-up comedian of all time by Comedy Central. Rock was born in Andrews, South Carolina. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved to Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York. A few years later, they relocated and settled in the working-class area of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. His mother, Rosalie (née Tingman), was a teacher and social worker for the mentally handicapped; his father, Julius Rock, was a former truck driver and newspaper deliveryman. Julius died in 1988 after ulcer surgery. His younger brothers Tony and Kenny are also in the entertainment business. His older brother, Charles, died in 2006 due to a long struggle with alcoholism. Rock has said that he was influenced by the performing style of his paternal grandfather, Allen Rock, a preacher. Rock began doing stand-up comedy in 1985 in New York City's Catch a Rising Star. He slowly rose up the ranks of the comedy circuit in addition to earning bit roles in the film I'm Gonna Git You Sucka and the TV series Miami Vice. Upon seeing his act at a nightclub, Eddie Murphy befriended and mentored the aspiring comic. Murphy gave Rock his first film role in Beverly Hills Cop II. Rock became a cast member of the popular sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live in 1990. He and other new cast members Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider and David Spade became known as the Bad Boys of SNL. In 1991, he released his first comedy album Born Suspect and won acclaim for his dramatic role as a crack addict in the film New Jack City. His tenure on SNL gave Rock national exposure. 4-0 out of 5 stars READ IT!!
Mac has tons of great stories about his 40 years as a rock musician. The best thing I can say about this book, it made me get all my Small Faces and Faces CDs out,I ordered three of his Bump Band CDs, and even ordered Bob Dylan's "Real Live" album (on which Mac is bandmember), and re-watched for the umpteenth time, The Rolling Stones video of '82 tour. Had to play Paul Westerberg's "Silver Naked Ladies" to hear Mac's killer piano. I even dreamed about doing cocaine while reading this book. And then I read again.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greats
Have to admit: I've been a fan of Mac's work ever since the Small Faces released Shalalalalee. Nevertheless, fan of the music does not imply fan of his writing. So I started the book with caution, like I start every 'music' book: is it a brilliant trip that whisks me away on the journey, or is it a cheap ripoff of the fans who cannot stay away?

Rest assured: this book is a) very well written, very entertaining, very funny, and b) never spirals down (like so many other similar works) into Oh they did this to me, I never got recognized for that, etc.

Anyone who knows Mac will confirm: reading this book is like listening to the man talk: one anecdote pours into the other during a very human and often hilarious conversation, always delivered with that unmistakenly British great sense of humor.

Cheers Mac, you've given me many hours of reading pleasure, on top of what I already owe you for playing on much of the soundtrack of my life.

Especially recommended for fellow musicians!

2-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
Wonder if he would sit and read a similar story about my life as a dope smoking, beer drinking, coke snorting, rock and roll fan? Somehow I doubt it. Perhaps if he didn't indulge as much as he did, he would have been able to write a better book. With stories I could trust to be true. He made me laugh a couple times, so I gave it a star for each of those laughs. If he sticks to what he's good at, and that would be rocking and rolling on the keyboards, he will become a legend. But no more writing books Ian. Please.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is nothing but the Truth
Someone wrote: ALL THE RAGE is little more than a litany of boozy gigs, plane trips, dull hangovers, and bad business deals.

Duh! A true book about the rock life! And a cautionary tale, too, for any musician.Great job, Mac!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not That Riotous A Romp After All
I was dissapointed in this book, written by the keyboard player for one of my favorite bands, the Faces.Like virtually every other book I've ever read by or about a rocker (small 'r', not Rocker, with a big "r', which a good Mod would still take as an insult, I'm sure), ALL THE RAGE is little more than a litany of boozy gigs, plane trips, dull hangovers, and bad business deals. ... Product Description
A beautifully illustrated celebration of one of the most influential pop music record labels of all time. Mixing cultures and influences from reggae to pop, hip hop, and punk, Island has shaken up artistic tastes and introduced new categories to mainstream music. This spectacularly illustrated book, published to celebrate the label’s fiftieth anniversary, moves from Island’s origins in founder Chris Blackwell’s pioneering mission to bring Jamaican reggae to the mainstream to the label’s continuing presence in the music industry. Accompanying essays by ten contemporary music critics—including Chris Salewicz, Jon Savage, and Joe Boyd—are photographs, artist portraits, and album art from such legendary acts as Bob Marley, U2, Steve Winwood, Brian Eno, Grace Jones, Tom Waits, Eric B & Rakim, Tricky, Keane, Amy Winehouse, and many others. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Island Records - Newman and Salewicz (Universe)
A colorful, accurate and essential volume in the half-century history of rock'n'roll.

Before the multi-nationals took over the record business, there were a handful of entrepreneurs whose personalities and determination created impressive and unique bodies of musical work. David Geffen (first with Asylum and then his own moniker, Geffen Records) Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss with their famed A&M Records and Chris Blackwell's Island Records were three of the music world's leading progenitors.

It was the Island enterprise that was easily the one whose musical output was most defined by the taste and interests of its owner, Chris Blackwell. Beginning in the late 50's in his native Jamaica, and later upon arrival in the UK, it was Blackwell who was widely credited with bringing reggae music to the world stage. From his small base of operations, Blackwell began licensing Jamaican singles until he fortuitously had a worldwide hit with Millie Small's "My Girl Lollipop." The success of that record, lead to a series of even bigger successes with both English rock (Traffic, Cat Stevens, Roxy Music, King Crimson) and reggae music (Jimmy Cliff, Toots & the Maytals and of course the act that put Island into the stratosphere, Bob Marley & the Wailers.)

In this fitting visual history of the label, longtime Blackwell associate Suzette Newman and British rock author Chris Salewicz, take us on a journey of one of the most distinctive, powerful and successful independent record labels of the last 50 years. With essays contributed from those who were there as well as a chronological photo archive capturing most of the groups, single sleeves and album covers of the company's five decades of output, "The Story of Island Records" is a colorful, accurate and essential volume in the half-century history of rock'n'roll.

If Island was known for anything, it was the distinctive edge of its artist's style. Musicians from Mott the Hoople to Ultravox, Nick Drake to Brian Eno, and Grace Jones to P.J. Harvey all called Island home. But it was the world of reggae where Island had no peer. Not just the big stars, but somewhat lesser knowns like Aswad, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse and Third World all had thriving careers on the label as well.

The history of Island Records is so robust, so colorful and this 222 page book captures the aura with perfect energy, detail and balance. And did I mention they signed a band called U2? Oh look, Blackwell changed the world... again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed (not the book but the seller)
Please don't misunderstood... The book is actually great! I've been enjoying it a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just the thing for a rockhound
I bought this book to put together a simple geology science unit. You could make an entire science unit using this book alone. The pictures are just amazing and the website that the book directs you to is just a huge plus. In the website, you plug in a keyword and get everything from animations that demonstrate concepts,to geology games and each keyword contains a least a dozen different pages for various concepts. The information is presented with plenty of pictorial examples to "show" you rather than just describe. You cannot beat the price for what you are getting. I plan on using this book again when I teach the more advanced geology science unit. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Weak descriptions, sub-optimal useability
This is one of the weakest climbing guide books I own. It's a small step up from a bunch of topo maps stabled together. While the book is fine for telling you which climbs a certain cliff contains, most of the climb descriptions are weak or non-existent. The authors purposefully omit topos for many easy classic climbs like Cathedral Peak. The most annoying part is that the appendix that has climbs indexed by difficulty does not have the page numbers for the topos listed along side them! You have to look at a different index to get those.

Sub 5.10a climbers and especially Tuolumne newbies should buy other guides to the area first.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not so Much
The diagrams in this guide are weak, the approach hikes poorly-described and the author seems to deliberately omit any climbs in the 5.7-5.10 range. One of the least useful guides I've used.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
This is a solid climbing guidebook.Tuolumne Meadows is on my top 3 list for favorite places to climb on this planet, and both these two local authors make that experience even better! If you're going to Tuolumne, I just don't think you can go wrong with this book.
