Product Description
In receiving this testimonial from the Representatives of the people and States of this Union I am deeply sensible to the

circumstances under which it has been given. All my predecessors in the high station to which the favor of the House now calls

me have been honored with majorities of the electoral voices in their primary colleges. It has been my fortune to be placed by

the divisions of sentiment prevailing among our countrymen on this occasion in competition, friendly and honorable, with three of

my fellow-citizens, all justly enjoying in eminent degrees the public favor, and of whose worth, talents, and services no one

entertains a higher and more respectful sense than myself. The names of two of them were, in the fulfillment of the provisions of

the Constitution, presented to the selection of the House in concurrence with my own--names closely associated with the glory

of the nation, and one of them further recommended by a larger minority of the primary electoral suffrages than mine.

In this state of things, could my refusal to accept the trust thus delegated to me give an immediate opportunity to the people to

form and to express with a nearer approach to unanimity the object of their preference, I should not hesitate to decline the

acceptance of this eminent charge and to submit the decision of this momentous question again to their determination. But the

Constitution itself has not so disposed of the contingency which would arise in the event of my refusal. I shall therefore repair to

the post assigned me by the call of my country, signified through her constitutional organs, oppressed with the magnitude of the

task before me, but cheered with the hope of that generous support from my fellow-citizens which, in the vicissitudes of a life

devoted to their service, has never failed to sustain me, confident in the trust that the wisdom of the legislative councils will guide

and direct me in the path of my official duty, and relying above all upon the superintending providence of that Being in whose

hands our breath is and whose are all our ways.

Product Description
California is proving itself more and more the wonderland of the United States. Its hosts of annual visitors are increasing with marvelous rapidity; its population is growing by accretions from the other states faster than any other section in the civilized world. The reasons are not far to seek. They may be summarized in five words, viz., climate, topography, healthfulness, productiveness and all-around liveableness. Its climate is already a catch word to the nations; its healthfulness is attested by the thousands who have come here sick and almost hopeless and who are now rugged, robust and happy; its productiveness is demonstrated by the millions of dollars its citizens annually receive for the thousands of car-loads (one might almost say train-loads) of oranges, lemons, grape-fruit, walnuts, almonds, peaches, figs, apricots, onions, potatoes, asparagus and other fruits of its soil; and its all-around home qualities are best evidenced by the growth, in two or three decades, of scores of towns from a merely nominal population to five, ten, twenty, forty or fifty thousand, and of the cities of San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oakland to metropolises, the two former already claiming populations of half a million or thereabouts.

As far as its topography, its scenic qualities, are concerned, the world of tourists already has rendered any argument upon that line unnecessary. It is already beginning to rival Switzerland, though that Alpine land has crowded populations within a day's journey to draw from. One has but to name Monterey, the Mt. Shasta region, Los Angeles, San Diego and Coronado, the Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, the Big Trees, the King and Kern River Divide, Mono Lake and a score of other scenic regions in California to start tongues to wagging over interesting reminiscences, whether it be in London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid or Petrograd.

Books galore are being published to make California's charms better known, and it has long seemed strange to me that no book has been published on Lake Tahoe and its surrounding country of mountains, forests, glacial valleys, lakes and canyons, for I am confident that in one or two decades from now its circle of admirers and regular visitors will include people from all over the civilized world, all of whom will declare that it is incomparable as a lake resort, and that its infinite variety of charm, delight and healthful allurement can never adequately be told.

Product Description
John C. Calhoun may be best known for his stature in the U.S. Senate and his controversial defense of slavery, but he is also a key figure in American political thought. The staunchest advocate of the consensus model of government as an alternative to majority rule, he proposed government not by one, by few, or by many, but by all: each key group enjoying veto rights over collective decisions.

Some consider consensus preferable to majority rule in deeply divided societies, and consensus theory has been advocated in such contemporary works as Lani Guinier's The Tyranny of the Majority. James Read's book, the first historically informed, theoretically sophisticated critique of Calhoun's political thought, goes beyond other studies to ask key questions about the feasibility of consensus. Read critically examines Calhoun's arguments, considering both their antebellum context--including Calhoun's spirited defense of slavery--and modern-day attempts to apply consensus models in Northern Ireland, the former Yugoslavia, and South Africa.

Read sheds new light on the crisis leading up to the Civil War by exploring Calhoun's conviction that his uncompromising defense of slavery would help preserve the Union. He also juxtaposes Calhoun's thought with that of Jefferson and Madison, whose legacies Calhoun invoked to support his claim that states had the right to nullify federal law, and he contrasts Madison's ultimate faith in majority rule with Calhoun's ultimate rejection of it.

Read argues that, although Calhoun's critique of majority rule deserves careful attention, his remedy is unworkable and in the end unjust. Read demonstrates that governments ruled by consensus tend to be ineffective, that they are better at preventing common action than achieving common goods, and that they privilege strategically placed minorities rather than producing genuine consensus.

Majority Rule versus Consensus is a provocative work that sheds new light on the promise and limitations of democracy, showing that, despite the failure of Calhoun's remedy, his diagnosis of the potential injustice of majority rule must be taken seriously. It discourages uncritical celebrations of democracy in favor of reflection on how committed democrats can better address the problems that Calhoun attempted to solve.

This book is part of the American Political Thought series. ... Read more

Product Description
The only recording ever made of James Joyce himself reading from Ulysses--the classic novel that forever changed the course of 20th-century literature. Also included, Joyce reading from Finnegans Wake and Cyril Cusack reading selections from Joyce's poetry. Ulysses, passage from the Aeolus episode * Chamber Music, I through XXXVI * Finnegans Wake, Anna Livia Plurabelle * Pomes Penyeach * Ecce Puer

On Recording James Joyce:

In 1924, I went to the office of His Master's Voice in Paris to ask them if they would record a reading by James Joyce from Ulysses.  But they would agree only if it were done at my expense.  The record would not have their label on it, nor would it be listed in their catalogue.  I accepted the terms: thirty copies of the recording to be paid for on delivery.

Joyce himself was anxious to have this recording made.  He had made up his mind, he told me, that this would be the only reading from Ulysses.  Recording was done in a rather primitive manner in those days.  All the same, I think the Ulysses recording is a wonderful performance.  I never hear it without being deeply moved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen Carefully and Hear Joyce Speak
James Joyce reads an excerpt from Ulysses and Finnegans Wake. This unique recording is below present day standards, but for certain parts of the recording that is audible, it is a delight to hear Joyce's Irish intonations. His rolling r's and tenor voice is a treat. From what I am aware of, it is unfortunate that there are no other documented audio or visual sources that capture this legendary figure in action in spite of the fact that moving pictures and sound audio came in vogue during the period in which he lived.Nonetheless, in addition to Joyce's eloquent readings, Cyril Cusack's reads from Joyce's poetry, "Chamber Music," "Pomes Penyeach," and "Ecce Puer" where he offers an atmospheric feel to Joyce's creativity that fulfills this exceptional recording.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but . . .
While this seems to be a good product (admittedly, I don't possess it), I would think twice about buying it. "The James Joyce Audio Collection" (which I do possess) - another collection of readings at $20.97 (on Amazon as of 3/19/04; ISBN: 0060501790) - offers everything this product has and more for only an additional ten dollars. I suppose if you're only interested in the Joyce readings (only two on either collection, unfortunately), this may be the right product: they are undoubtedly the highlight of either collection, and are well worth even twenty dollars alone. Still, why throw away the opportunity to hear a fantastic reading of Molly's soliloqy, or listen to Fr. Arnall's hellfire sermon pounded out? Do yourself a favor and spring for the 4-disk "Joyce Audio Collection."

5-0 out of 5 stars Joysprick! Joygrantit! Ear! Ear!
James Joyce reads from his work. Who could ask for anything more? (I could. Why didn't he read every word he ever wrote?) N.B.: in the "Anna Livia" episode, he lays on the Irish accent with a trowel.I can see the Grammies: "and the winner is...James Joyce for 'AnnaLivia Plurabelle'! " Pour a glass of bluemilk, loosen your talktapes, and enjoyce.

5-0 out of 5 stars <br>A MUST
If you think you are a fan of James Joyce - and you dont know about this audio - you must buy this immediately.I think this is the only recording of JAMES JOYCE READING JAMES JOYCE available (I havent be able to findanything else). An excellent recording - and considering when it wasrecorded - excellent quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely necessary for any one who wants to read Joyce
I heard selections from this on the radio on Bloom'sday (what 12 years ago?) and it was, essentially, my first experience with Joyce.I became an instant fan.Incidentally, this may have been the basis for my theory that the only proper way to read the book is _out loud_; suddenly it becomesmuch clearer and more intelligible (and, I might add, funnier!) ... My 8 year old son has not yet developed a true love of reading, so I'm always looking for books that will capture his interest.Well, this is one of them. The storyline is great and the characters are so loveable, he didn't put it down. And instead of reading for the required 20 minutes per day, he's opted to read longer, just for fun! That's music to this mother's ears!

Based on the true story of two women fated to become pirates and the man who accepted them as equals.

Fed up with an outlaw existence, Calico Jack Rackam swears off the pirate life, but he hasn’t reckoned with Anne Bonny, a woman who would as soon stab a man as give him a good tumble—that is, unless he’s a pirate. Soon Jack finds himself out on the high seas again, with Anne by his side and his men spoiling for action. And when they capture a Dutch merchant ship, they pick up an unlikely crew mate as well, an expert sword fighter and topmast seaman who has a secret: he just happens to be a woman named Mary. Together, Jack, Anne, and Mary cut a bold swath through the West Indies, stealing naval sloops, plundering rich merchant ships and choosing to live a life of freedom—the only life that mattered. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorite Books
This is the way it should be done everytime.

Mr. Nelson combines the facts with details of the period to make a book that is both riveting and a very quick read.

If this were a movie, I would buy tickets for the first night.

If your seeking out a novel about the legend of Calico Jack, Anne Bonney and Mary Read, this book would give you all you need and more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another good one!
Another good book on Anne Bonny, Mary Read, and Jack Rackham.I think I finished this book in 4 days.Didn't want to put it down. The author really brought the characters to life and did it well. Will always make me wonder as to what happened to Anne Bonny. What really happened to her and how her days ended.Good book, I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Calico Jack, Ann and Mary
If you like pirate stories, this is the book for you.Fictionalized history but very informative. Will read more books by this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read!
This is one of the best books I've ever read. The subject matter was gripping -- women pirates and how they got to be pirates! I thought the characterizations were excellent and felt myself really caring about these people. I feel James Nelson did a masterful job telling this fascinating story, and it was so realistically done that I really felt I was there watching everything. I highly recommend it -- definitely different, eminently interesting! Kudos to James L. Nelson -- a wonderful story teller!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Whose life mattered?
Fictional account of the true-life pirates of the subtitle. The brief afterword explains the historicity and references the few primary sources.

Think "Pirates of the Caribbean", the R rated non-Disney version.Sometimes reads like history with a bare frame work of fictionalization, but generally flows well as a story and sounds plausibly like what we think we know a pirate's life was like.Of course the comparison also suggests that the book is more entertaining than fulfilling, and this is true, although the poignancy of the title leaves one thinking:Whose life, or is it which life (ie. lifestyle), is the only one that mattered? ... Book Description

The famous Tip O’Neill axiom “all politics is local” comes alive in this chronicle of Democrat James H. Read’s hard-fought but unsuccessful—by 98 votes—bid for state legislature in the socially conservative communities of Stearns and Morrison Counties, Minnesota. Read door-knocked 7,500 households during his campaign, visiting with voters and engaging in genuine dialogue on doorsteps from St. Anthony to St. Joseph. At once a memoir of a hard-fought contest and a meditation on the state of American democracy, Read’s work contrasts the modern media-driven political campaign, where candidates glean their knowledge of voters from pollsters and communication only flows one way, with the kind of true understanding of constituents and issues that can only grow from individual encounters. Face-to-face doorstep conversations, he claims, give a candidate (or volunteer) and voter an opportunity to truly persuade and learn from one another. In a district where the pro-life movement dominated politics, Read’s invitation to honestly discuss abortion and reject single-issue politics resonated with many voters. Refusing the “red state” versus “blue state” view of American voters, Doorstep Democracy shows the power and importance of kitchen-table politics—people sitting down together to tackle the issues that affect us—and proves that voters and candidates can be convinced to change their minds. Read ultimately demonstrates how conversations between citizens concerned about their communities can get us beyond the television ads, mass mailings, and sound bites to rejuvenate American democracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An illuminating examination of grassroots level politics
Other than being a confessed West Wing junkie, I've never had a strong interest in the nuts and bolts of political campaigns. Yet I found Doorstep Democracy to be both captivating and entertaining. The author takes a very readable and unvarnished approach to explaining not just his motivations for running but also his triumphs and foibles along the way. In an era when the phrase "all politics is local" seems to have been replaced by "all politics is screaming", Read's story and self-reflection provide a refreshing window into what it takes to truly be a people's representative. Or at least what it takes to attempt to become one. ... Read more

Product Description

Whether you are new to Joyce’s most difficult work or a long familiar friend, this humane essay will guide, refresh, and delight. It has been described as "smart and readable," "an excellent Wake Primer," "everything such an introduction should be," "the best intro to the Wake I’ve seen," "a stunning performance and of exemplary clarity," "intelligent, courteous and serene."

Part I introduces the unique language techniques that Joyce used to create Finnegans Wake and describes some of the major themes and characters. The influence and presence of Giordano Bruno, Giambattista Vico, and Egyptian mythology are described, and the importance of Dublin and Irish geography and history is emphasized with a concise overview of each.

Part II examines several short excerpts in depth and provides general introductions to several others. The selections give the reader a broad sample of essential passages from throughout the book and different examples of how to read and interpret them.

Included as appendices are a whimsically short version of Finnegans Wake, thoughts about the narrator, structural insights from the order in which Joyce wrote the book, and an essay on the presence of Irish saint and goddess Brighid as elucidated by the late Clarence Sterling.

The Rough Guide to First-Time Latin America, Edition 2 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)

Another L/P First-Time series and this Latin America is good and helpful and educational. I knew next to nothing about L/A but this book has help me to understand it and inform me and educate me and thus was worth the money!

Places to go, what to see etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for travelers planning their first trip to the region.
I bought this book when I first began planning my trip to Latin America. I hadn't ever been to the region and wanted to know as much about it as possible. When I bought the book, my prior travels included the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and I knew that Latin America would be a bit different! It's a great book for travelers planning a first trip to Central or South America, and also a great guide for first-time travelers in general. I think people of any age would find this book helpful, too--it's information that any traveler will find useful.

There is a chapter on each country in the region with highlights to consider visiting, plus practical information on what to take, how to get around, routes to consider, visas, health, safety, and lots more. It's not a book you will probably take with you when you leave, but one you'll want to read in the beginning or mid-stages of planning your adventure. It'll answer a lot of your questions and concerns and help you have a better idea of what to expect.

I'm definitely glad I bought and read this book as it prepared me well for my three month adventure in Central America and addressed many of my concerns and questions. Recommended for everyone considering or planning a trip to Latin America.

A great book to start with. We bought First-Time Asia before we took off to Asia for 6 months and it was extremely useful to help with all the planning and decide where we wanted to go. This time we know we want to go to Latin America but have no idea how south we will go or what so this book is great for the rampant changing of minds that occurs while we plan trips bc the information is so broad and covers everything. But it's just the basics. You will need a guide for each country you go to to take with you (we usually buy them used and trade them in when we arrive). Leave this one at home. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.
