Great Author!
We have read about 25 of Jack Higgin's books and love every one of them!We recommend this, and all, of his books for suspense and intrigue!

Stacey Wyatt Earp?
Yes, it's a little strange reading a first-person account from an individual who resembles Superman more than Wyatt Earp.Of course, since Wyatt's telling the tale in the first person, he's going to be there standing proudly at the end of the story.The only question is, what happens in the meanwhile.Truly, very little happens.

What was positive about this book was its setting: mostly in Sicily.The author does a good job of describing the geography and people of that island.I read it with an atlas nearby and looked the places up as they were cited.I've never been to Italy, much less Sicily, so this part was interesting.

Otherwise, this novel is entirely "formulaic."Good guy bests all his bad adversaries and runs off into the sunset with the pretty girl.

Do "Higgins fans" enjoy this kind of a formula?Well, I'd say they certainly must, since Higgins is as prolific as a spider monkey and apparently has a large readership.

Me, I think I would get bored reading about "vengeance is mine," saith the hero.In fact, I did get bored reading this book, but I finished it (because I'm not a "quitter," you know, "quitters never win" etc.).Is that formulaic or what?

Well, quitters may never win but they might occasionally find a more interesting book to read than this one by Jack Higgins.However, I'm not giving up on Higgins.I'm going to try another book and see how closely it follows the formula.Diximus.

A Very Forgettable book
Having come across this book, I thought I would give it a try. Bad choice on my part. The characters are unbelievable, and the reader continues to think of them as someone in the author's imagination rather than real characters during the story. The author needs to 'know' his subject. With statements such as; "... I learned that I acted instinctively like a real professional who always aims for the shooting hand with his first bullet, knowing that a dying man can still get off a shot at him."Really! Give me a break. A 'professional' is not some John Wayne. A professional shoots for body mass and lots of it. The author has seen too many cowboy movies and totally spoiled this book from page 22 onwards. The characters are totally unbelievable. Not worth the read.

An A-Team Gone Bad
Stacey Wyatt had earned his living as a member of a small band of mercenaries who hired out their services.Branching out on his own as a smuggler, he was captured and imprisoned.His old pals show up to break him out for a new assignment, rescuing a kidnapped young woman.The mission takes him back into contact with his Mafia family in Sicily he has not seen for years.Then things get interesting.

Stacey finds himself involved in a high stakes game where it is hard to tell who your friends are and where loyalties lie.There is double dealing from many directions.A string of bodies is left scattered about the landscape as the plot works towards a surprising conclusion.

This book is supposed to be an oldie and a goodie.Well, it's an oldie. Goodie?OK, it's pretty good, but not spectacular.We enter the lives of an international gang of mercenaries on a special mission to rescue a kidnapped daughter of a multi-millionaire on the island of Sicily.Soon we find out one of our heroes has mafia connections, and the story changes character.This book is a very quick read.The ending was predictable and I never figured out the significance of the title.Several times I cannot figure out what causes our hero to act the way he did. ... Not written by a math teacher
Several concepts are presented incorrectly. Very disappointed in the explanations. They were short, but they weren't shortcuts--they were just incomplete explanations.

Proof It Works - I Passed! (Math: 392 out of 450/English: 431/450 and 3.5 out of 4 on the Essay)
Last year, like many other high school students, I was nervous about the exit exam. English has always been my strong point and I was personally more concerned about whether or not I would pass the math, but I thought that the test might be rather hard. I didn't find the booklets that the state provides at high schools too helpful. They give you the basic facts; what standards you'll be tested on and a few examples of test problems. They don't provide many good hints on how to prepare, studying tips, and other similar issues.

My teacher had given me this book, REA's Mathematics CAHSEE preparation, as well as the CAHSEE prep. book for English. I was amazed at how much more thorough these books are than the ones that the state of California provides! The beginning of each book fully explains the CAHSEE and why it is essential for graduation. A break-down of the questions is given (for example, in math, there's 12 questions for Statistics/Data Analysis/Probability, 14 for Number Sense, and so on) and how the score on practice tests is calculated. Each of these books provides two complete practice tests that are incredibly similar to the actual exit exam. A study schedule is given in each of the REA books; Week 1 (study Section 2,) Week 2 (study Section 3), Week 3 (study Section 4), Week 4 (take Practice Test 1), and Week 5 (take Practice Test 2). Breaking down the preparation over a period of time is much less overwhelming than trying to cram everything in a week (or maybe even days) before the exit exam. If you want to pass, you've really got to spread out your study over a few weeks in order to be sure you fully comprehend what you're supposed to have learned.

Not only does each book provide useful test-taking strategies, but will also help improve your understanding of mathematics (as well as English, if you get the other one) overall. It starts with covering the basics and then moves up to more complex topics. For example, the first chapter (Number Sense) deals with topics such as the lowest common denominator, computations, converting fractions/decimals/percents, exponents, and so on. Later topics deal with measurement, geometry, and Algebra. There is always plenty of information provided in earlier chapters to make sure you'll be able to understand what comes later on.

On the mathematics CAHSEE Practice Test 1, I scored 396/450. On Practice Test 2, I scored 390/450. On the real CAHSEE test (which was VERY similar to the various examples and the two practice tests provided in this book), I got a 392/450 (that's about 79% of the questions correct)! I was so glad to have passed, since I have struggled with math for years.

TExES PPr w/CD-ROM (REA)
Great book to read and study for the PPR.Raised my score my 30 points and passed the PPR.

Texes PPR Book
What you would expect from a review book. Answers in back are helpful as are the explanations. Never used the CD.

A great study aid and the CD-ROM helps!
I would recommend three test preps in preparing for the TEXES PPR, especially for the 4-8, and 8-12:
Becoming a Middle School or High School Teacher in Texas
TExES PPR w/ CD-ROM (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the TExES (Test Preps)
Kaplan TExES

The first book provides detailed explanations of key terms for each domain and competency but is only relevant for those taking the 4-8 and/or 8-12 PPR exam, and some useful practice questions. The REA PPR prep book provides 4 full-length exams for the EC-4, 4-8, 8-12, and EC-12 respectively, with detailed explanations for each question in the respective exams. The Kaplan TExES is similar to the REA PPR prep book in that it provides some explanation on the domains and competencies and then provides 4 practice full-length tests for the respective exams (EC-4, 4-8, 8-12, and EC-12). There are useful test-taking strategies discussed in the book and a diagnostic test that helps the test taker to draft a personalized study plan. That being said, I felt the REA book has the advantage with the CD-ROM feature as it provides timed tests and automatic scoring, which allows the test taker to pace one's self in preparation for the actual exam, and also get immediate feedback on what domains and competencies need to be improved on.

great study aide!
I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but this book/CD REALLY helped! I felt it covered most areas that were on the test, and many of the examples in the Sample Test were a lot like what I saw on the test. I loved the CD test, and how it tells you WHY you get things wrong, etc.

Definitely recommended. I took the EC-12 btw and did great!I only missed 6 questions! :)

I passed my PPR because the CD-ROM was helpful and helped me build a tolerance with the timed online test. It felt real and prepared me to stay calm for the actual exam. I failed the PPR the first time and passed the second try when I purchased the book. EC-4. ... Read more

This book has lots of practice questions with answer key. Practic test with answer key and explanations. There are 4 diagnostic tests on arithmetic, algebra, geometry and word problems.
