Product Description

One of America's greatest business enterprises, the Pullman Company provided outstanding service aboard a vast fleet of railroad passenger cars that could be found in almost every nook and cranny of the United States. This illustrated history examines Pullman's diverse fleet, from its spectacular custom-built wooden cars of the nineteenth century to steel heavyweight cars in the prewar years and on into the lightweight streamlined era. Author Joe Welsh includes period photos, many in rare color, as well as car diagrams and ads that help trace the development, composition, and evolution of the historically and culturally significant Pullman fleet, including the gamut of sleeper, parlor, and restaurant cars. This is a fitting tribute to the former cultural icons aboard which strode giants of American life, such as Babe Ruth and Clark Gable, as well as first-time travelers from small-town America.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any train history collection
The Cars of Pullman is a 'must' for any train history collection, covering the Pullman which served the U.S. rail travel industry for more than half a century. Packed with vintage photos and illustrations, this covers the Pullman's evolution and includes rare archival photos, diagrams, and period ads alike. Three Pullman experts contribute the history, making this an authoritative 'must' for any transportation or train library.

5-0 out of 5 stars SpeedReaders.info Review
Pullman being an iconic American company, much has been written about it already but still this book manages to pull almost 50% new photos out of the hat. Divided into four principal eras the book explains the history of the sleeping car (which predates Pullman), the company's operating model (building cars then leasing them to railroads or private parties); describes the construction, design, paint schemes, and furnishings of the rolling stock; routes; and follows its business fortunes. For someone who is only now discovering Pullman this book is a really sound and visually rich introduction and even the railroad cognoscenti will still find new bits, especially among the many illustrations from a number of private collections. Photos show interiors and exteriors and there are several ads, brochures, and arrangement drawings. Some of the photos are stills taken from a Pullman training film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning about Pullman
"The Cars of Pullman" explores the history of the Pullman Company and it's sleeping cars from the beginning until the end of sleeping car service in the United States.

The book highlights the operations of the Pullman company, which by the late 1920's ran a fleet of more than 8,000 cars and carried over 39 million passengers a year. It was literally a "hotel on wheels" that moved every night.

The book is divided into logical sections which describe the development of the company between 1867 and the end in 1968. The first section covers the early wood-car era from 1867-1910. Next, the Standard or "Heavyweight" car era from 1910-1932. The next section covers the beginning of lightweight or streamlined equipment from 1932-1943. The last chapter covers the post-war Pullman operations from 1945-1968.

The authors of the book Joe Welsh, Bill Howes, and Kevin Holland do a great job of combining pictures from the railroads and the files of the Pullman Company with descriptions of the different types of equipment used over the years. It was amazing to learn about all of the different types of accommodations and even non-sleeping cars that the company managed.

The images throughout the book highlight the change from Pullman "Green" heavyweight sleepers to the multi-colored sleepers of the lightweight trains such the Broadway Limited or the 20th Century Limited in the east and the Chiefs and City trains out west.

The book discusses the struggles that the company faced after it was forced to divide up its operations group from the Pullman car-building group. After the Second World War, other builders joined the passenger market, and the railroads owned the cars, but Pullman still operated the services on-board.

Finally, as the passenger market decreased due to competition from the automobile and airlines the railroads took over their own sleeping car management and in 1968 the Pullman company quit operating.

Many Pullman cars survived the founding of Amtrak in 1971 and saw continued service until replaced by newer equipment. While most Pullman cars were scrapped, some did survive and still serve as private cars or are in museum collections throughout the United States.

I highly recommend reading "The Cars of Pullman" to increase your knowledge of this fascinating part of American railroading history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Veeeerrrry short. Lovely illustrations. Note for educators: list of all plays at end of review
The stories are quite short as mentioned above, but still wonderful. And yet, I would not have minded a little more meat, even for the young listeners & readers. I look at these stories as a whetting of the appetite and mental preparation for the real and better thing.

One of my frustrations while trying to decide whether or not I should purchase this book was the lack of a complete list of the "plays" contained in the collection. I want to share them with you along with short notes regarding how they appear in the book:

The Winter's Tale: 8 pages, with a little over 2 pages of dialogue.
Romeo and Juliet: 10 pages, about 2 pages of dialog.
The Tempest: 4 page long synopsis, with good summary quote at the end.
A Midsummer Night's Dream: 7 pages with about 4 pages of dialogue.
King Lear: 8 pages with about 2 pages of dialogue.
Cymbeline: 8 pages with about 6 pages of dialogue.
The Taming of the Shrew: 9 pages, 5 pages of dialogue
Hamlet: 8 pages, 2 and a half of dialogue
Twelfth Night: 8 pages, 7 of dialogue
As You Like It: 8 pages, 5 of dialogue.
Pericles: 8 pages, 1 of dialogue. Basically a synopsis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare for kids fun for any age
This book is loads of fun! I bought it for my third grader, who is taking a field trip to see "Romeo and Juliet." I wanted him to have some familiarity with the storyline so he wouldn't be yawning cluelessly by the end of Act I. He loved it so much he wanted to discuss it! Even my husband who hates to read the stuff enjoyed it.
In short, the book is well done. It shortens the plays into a very long story-summary without the dramatic language that can be somewhat of a distraction. We're not talking Cliff's Notes here folks. This is just a handful of pages per play written on a level anyone can understand and enjoy. The book is not long so it's not intimidating. (Have you seen any books containing Shakespeare's complete works, lately? Mine could be used for a doorstop! It's huge!)
We paired this book with the comedy of "The Reduced Shakespeare Company's" version of Romeo and Juliet. My son is actually looking forward to the trip!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic introduction to Shakespeare for younger children
I read and reread this book as a youth. The stories read much like classic fairy tales with tragedy, irony, and moral lessons. The writing is very accessible and encouraged me to seek out the full length "stories" in their original (play script) form once I was old enough (6th/7th grade) to really read them.

For a child who has a love of literature, these retellings of the great plays may start a life-long interest in Shakespeare's art (as they did for me).

5-0 out of 5 stars Lorenzo Schiavo and Felipe Gravier
Romeo and Juliet

Felipe Gravier and Lorenzo Schiavo review:

We think that Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two star-crossed lovers whose families are in a terrible fight which prevents them from coming together. How far the couple will go to be together becomes the focus of the story. Of his richest poetry. The opening and closing choruses are some of his most outstanding work. Romeo's It is a brilliant love story but not much more. It still possesses however some wooing of Juliet is fabulously written. The Friar gets the best lines. Mercutio is one the best friends of Romeo. It is not as good as Shakespeare has written but it's still a fabulous book and up there with his best work. One part of the play we didn't like was that for the tow families get arrange there two kids had to die.
The English language wasn't finally finished so Shakespeare had the liberty to create words and play with the language, as he liked. That's why It was so difficult to understand what each character wanted to express so the teacher had to explain us each of that words and teach us all the words in that age and told us which were the words in the English of today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Storys
This book provides lots of Shakespeare's Storys like "A Midsummer's Night Dream" and "Hamlet" with a children's fairy tale twist. The storys are the same as Shakespeare's, but easier for children to understand. My favorite story was Hamlet because I had just seen the play.A while after we read Children's Shakespeare and it helped me to understandHamlet better. ... Product Description
Every evening for much of the twentieth century, 50,000 or more travelers snuggled under crisp Pullman linens, falling asleep in one state and awaking in another. This nostalgic look back at what was essentially a rolling hotel company contracted by the nation’s railroads to provide guest accommodations, covers every aspect of Pullman operations, from the emerging popularity of steam-powered rail travel in the early twentieth century to its diesel-powered zenith and its eventual nadir in the 1950s and 1960s. Pullman’s entire complex network of employees and services is featured, from the ticket offices that manually handled millions of reservations each year to the six car shops spread across the nation to perform heavy maintenance and repairs, and all of Pullman’s porters, mechanics, cleaners, electricians, cooks, barbers, shoeshiners, and more. Illustrated with both black-and-white and color period views depicting Pullman interiors and facilities, as well as memorabilia and sales literature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best single book ever written on the Pullman Company
This book is an operating history of one of the world's most significant, complex and least understood railroad transportation companies. It is not another book about Pullman's wonderful Pullman porters who are already the subject of numerous other books. To put it another way, in 1920 the Pullman operating company employed roughly 23,000 employees, among them were 7,200 Pullman porters - this books tells the story of the porters and those other 15,800 employees who have been ignored in every other book on Pullman. It also explains most other aspects of how Pullman operated as a provider of first class rail service. Something no other book has done.

Until this book arrived on the scene understanding what Pullman actually did as a company and how it worked was virtually impossible. Now that it exists, it puts all the other books on the Pullman porters in the context of who they worked for, what they did for a living, why they did it and why they eventually lost their jobs.

Pullman porters are pictured at work in about 20% of the book's images - 25 different images - including archival company color footage of Porters at work which I've never seen before; a two page sidebar explains the porter's history and social importance while an entire chapter detailing an overnight trip in a Pullman car, written by a former railroader, spends considerable time explaining what a porter actually did enroute.

This book was nominated for the national book award of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society - twice. To quote Trains Magazine publisher Kevin Keefe, "My company has a fine railroad library, and a recent check of the card catalog turned up 37 books about Pullman. But almost all of them concerned some niche or subchapter of the Pullman Story.....none attempts to wrap the entire enterprise into a comprehensive, comprehensible whole. Until now. With Travel by Pullman.....Bill Howes and Joe Welsh have done the Pullman Company proud."

The books co-authors Bill Howes headed the B&O Railroad passenger department and was one of the last director's of the Pullman Company. Joe Welsh, a professional transportation planner, is an award winning transportation author who has written 14 books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Operational excellence
Interesting book and although factual description of Pullman travel. The Pullman car would not have been sucessful with out the Pullman porter. This book seems to imply that service in the cars was provided by the entire train crew while in fact the train was sucessful only because of the porters. A blunder on the part of the author.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Historical Re-write?
Although this book has some interesting photos and a bare bones history of the Pullman Car phenomenon, it is truly deficit in any mention and documentation of the Pullman Porters. How can a history of any sort be written about the Pullmans without talking about these hardworking porters and their service, which, by the way, sold the seats? In fact, much photographic documentation of these men exists, as Pullman used many photos of them in the corporate image advertising and some exists also from the porters' own historic unionization efforts. The fact that there is not a reference in even the index, and that less than a handful of pictures including these men can be seen in these pages makes me wonder about the author's grip on the material. After all, the berths did not lower and make themselves! For me, this book represents a simplification and sanitation of some very important American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Presentation of Pullman Service
This is a wonderful book! Very thorough, excellent photos/graphics, well written text. Absolutely a must for anyone interested in overnight train travel; what it was, and what it could be. ... Read more
