5-0 out of 5 stars Go-to book for historical accuracy
If you are looking for a book about trendy Craftsman-eqsue kitchen designs, this book is not for you.If, however, you are looking for a very thorough, meticulously compiled source of historically accurate information on Craftsman kitchens, then you will adore this book. Many of the photos in the book are museum-quality representations - heck, some of the photos were actually taken in living museums. If that bothers you or isn't what you're looking for, maybe try "The New Bungalow Kitchen" by Peter Labau instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book!!
What an inspiring and valuable resource!I'm planning a kitchen "remodel", and this book has made me decide to restore and improve on the original kitchen in my 1938 tudor-style cottage.I have read it cover to cover twice, and it's plastered with yellow sticky notes. It's so refreshing to see pictures of beautiful real-life kitchens instead of some $100,000+ Tuscan makeovers.I now have a new respect for my humble cabinetry.Working with what I already have will turn out to be the greenest option and will also save me a ton of money.I wish there were more books like this one around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent representation of historic kitchens
Just a quick review in response to some of the less favorable reviews on here. Yes, there are very few ideas on how to "modernize" bungalow kitchens, but if that is what you are looking for there are a dozen other books out there that are specifically tailored to that desire. The problem with these books, however, is that "modern" changes, well, constantly, so within a few years of the books being published they are outdated to some extent. To me, this book is infinitely more valuable as it focuses almost entirely on what the kitchens looked like originally, which does not change with the latest fads. There are many excellent photographs of original or restored kitchens from homes ranging from Greene and Greene bungalow-mansions to bungalow tract homes to Sears catalog homes. The writing is engaging (though very full of puns!!) and entertaining while at the same time being to the point.
My view on the "Obsessive vs Compromise" sections. They could probably be more accurately titled "Original" and "Meets modern code standards" as they talk about things such as Ground Fault outlets vs. 90 year old wiring. Yes, the "compromises" are not very compromising, but I believe that is because the intent of the book is to restore back to original, not update to new.
Some words on the book itself. My edition (a few years old, not sure of the exact year of printing) is of excellent quality, nice thick paper, clean printing, very clear photographs, good binding, etc.
In conclusion, if you are looking for an "updated" bungalow kitchen, I'll save you the money of buying any books and suggest instead you just tell a local contractor you want a brand new style kitchen with all the conveniences, but you want it in quarter-sawn oak with inset Shaker style doors. However, if you want to design something very close to what would have been original, this book is for you!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for preserving/restoring a craftsman style home
This book gives great historical information and practical solutions for maintaining, preserving, and restoring your craftsman style home. We own a foursquare rather than a bungalow, but have found this book to be very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Restoring Small Tudor Style Kitchens
I discovered this book, Bungalow Kitchens, in the local library, and returned to it time after time because of the beautiful photographs. After checking it out for the fifth time, Ibought it.It carriesinformation on restoring small Tudor style kitchens with authenticcolors, cabinet types, hardware, and interesting descriptions of 1920's kitchen appliances and built-ins. One such, detailed in the book, is the California cooler, a cabinet with an outside ventilation system for storing foodstuffs in cold weather. Many books of this type concentrate on the bungalow kitchen, which has darker woodwork and is more in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright, but in this book the Tudor kitchens are generally white or in lighter colors. This book also provides a collection of 1920's rooms filed with authentic old kitchenware and decorated in a Tuder period style. The sections 'Obsessive Restoration'versus the 'Compromise Solution' sections can help you decide, depending on circumstances, funds, and time, whether you wish to create a truly authentic 1920's kitchen, or one in the spirit of that style. Sections include: The history of the modern kichen, its eye appeal, the layout and design, the appliances and how to deal with professionals. I still refer to this book constantly, even though my kitchen is now restored to its original roots. It is a great reference and resource book on early kitchens of the 20th century Tudor.

Never got book. Seller claimed Post Office lost it. At least my money was refunded.

5-0 out of 5 stars much more than just a coffee table book
This is my first contact with Powell/Svendsen's books, and while it is indeed coffee table size (it needs to be large to accommodate the beautiful photography)it is so charming and readable that, without so intending, I READ it (in one sitting, yet).We have several other books of gorgeous bungalows, many with the same houses as subjects, with accomanying commentary equivalent to dry stale cornflakes;this one is crumpets and cream.Like others documenting bungalow style architecture, this book is not intended as a construction or instruction manual, but as inspiration. For admirers of bungalow style and for those seeking a picture to replace the thousand words BUNGALOW is an easy choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book

4-0 out of 5 stars more personalthan professionally informative
one of my favorite entertainers has written what is a personal account of her life.interesting, but i wish she would have touched more on her professional insights.perhaps another book?

4-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly sobering tale from one of the brightest young stars of the 1950's
Jane Powell is a really good actress, since to watch her in films such as "Holiday in Mexico", "Two Weeks with Love", "Nancy Goes to Rio", "A Date With Judy", "Rich, Young and Pretty", and her best-known title, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", one would never know what a rough personal life she actually has had until fairly recently.Goes to prove, once again, that Hollywood public imagery was and is often a long way from the reality. One interesting point I do want to bring up is the sympathetic portrait of Louis B. Mayer that Powell paints, one that's shared by a great many other former MGM actresses in the biographies I've read. Mayer was a complicated man, sometimes tyrannical and abusive, but at the same time, as Powell and others state, it's plain that he really did see his actor and actress employees as part of a huge extended family with himself as the father-figure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jane Powell...Yes!
I read this book by Ms. Powell and I loved it although it was actually quite an unexpectedly truthful story. Did you know her mother tried to kill her? Yes, and so this saga can be viewed as a cautionary tale for parents who are contemplating pushing their child into show business and what can happen. It is stealing your child's childhood and putting her/him into adult situations.

Ms Powell seems to have had an unhappy life until only recently due to her happy marriage to fellow child star, Dick Moore.

You'll appreciate Ms. Powell's candor yet be shocked at the kind of childhood she endured. Clearly Ms. Powell learned eventually to like performing but she paid a big price for her parents ultimate decision to support themselves on her talents.

If the girl next door has this kind of life, maybe things aren't as nice for her as we'd like to think. ... Read more

Some of the most off-putting writing I have encountered. Nice pictures but not worth encountering the unpleasant ego in every sentence. I sent this back immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
With doing renovation on our "new" 1906 home, found this to be a great for inspiration.Well written with great pictures!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane Powell rocks!
There are several good books on Arts & Crafts and Bungalow homes, but I love Jane Powell's books. Ihave almost all of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny and useful
I loved the author's sense of humor... very candid about what IS acceptable for a truely historically accurate home... although my 1914 home was remodeled by not-so-accurate "carpenters."I loved the pictures (so many rooms that look like mine!).Great for ideas, but remember this is not a DIY book.Just a pretty picture book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A conversation with one who understands
The reader might well develop a relationship with this book. Jane Powell takes you on an in-depth tour of the American bungalow. As she talks, her writing is conversational, the details are often interrupted with a pun, other humor, or an outburst revealing her biases. Readers who are looking for an academic study should go elsewhere. This is an enjoyable light-hearted "Open House"without a salesperson but rather a builder-decorator-owner. Powell knows this subject from being there and having done that. Behind her puns you find a seriousness based on an emotional bonding with bungalows. If the reader is thinking about rehabbing a bungalow this book is a necessity. If the reader has rehabbed a house meet a friend. ... Read more

Product Description
What defines an Arts & Crafts bungalow? What makes it different from other small, one or one-and-a-half story houses? Many say that it's hard to describe, but you know one when you see it. And knowing one when you see it is all about knowing how to spot the details. With Arts & Crafts homes, it is often the way the details are combined, and the philosophy they represent, that makes a house an authentic Arts and Crafts bungalow. It is not just knee braces in the gable, nor a river rock column, or a three part front window.

In their latest book, bungalow experts Jane Powell and Linda Svendsen identify the finer points and visual characteristics that make a bungalow a bungalow, and show how to incorporate these important details into your bungalow. The authors skillfully explain how to identify the details and the ways of blending them, and offer insight into the Arts & Crafts philosophy behind their use.

A sleeping porch, a pergola, an exposed rafter tail, an extensive use of wood, stone, and brick: none of these things by themselves characterize a bungalow. With Bungalow Details, however, anyone can become a bungalow expert, and be able to confidently "know a bungalow when they see one."

Jane Powell is the proprietor of House Dressing, a business dedicated to renovating and preserving old homes. She is a frequent lecturer and consultant, and is the author of Bungalow Kitchens and Bungalow Bathrooms.

Linda Svendsen, a graduate of Music and Art High School and Parsons School of Design in New York, has been a renowned photographer for more than thirty years. Her work is showcased in numerous magazines and books; she is the author of Bicycle: Around the World. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book about bungalow exteriors
Jane Powell is THE bungalow author to read. As a remodeler who specializes in 1920's bungalows, it pleases me to no end to read an author who really knows what she is talking about. Every Jane Powell book I have read is like a college course on that aspect of bungalow history, preservation, and renovation. This book is no exception. And she is really funny! Beautiful photos (as usual)by Linda Svendsen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book..a bit too politically correct
I enjoy this book and look at pretty regularly.I plan on using some of the details on future construction projects. However, the author is a bit too politically correct for my tastes. She keeps reminding us how "poison" vinyl is. That sort of bothered me.I am sure, given a choice, most people would choose to live a beautiful wooden or stone home rather than a vinyl clad manufactured home or tract home..however lets be realistic. Those types of home are often what is affordable to the average family.Other than that issue.. I would recommend the book.. it has some great pictures and lots of information about bungalow exterior details.

5-0 out of 5 stars best of the bunglaow books
Together writer Jane Powell and photographer Linda Svendsen create the best bungalow books on the market -- full of information, not just fluff. Whether you are thinking of remodelling your house, changing a few details, or just want to understand the history of your bungalow, this is the book to buy... and really, this book is very cheap compared to the price of a bad remodel.

In my opinion the chapter on avoiding replacement window scams, while energy-retrofitting your house, should be required reading for all homebuyers. ... Read more

A fascinating, nostalgic look at the history of Madison Park

Author Jane Powell Thomas invites the reader to experience these true stories from one of Seattle's oldest neighborhoods.

Located on the western shore of Lake Washington, Madison Park was first home to Duwamish Indians and virgin forest, then to some of early Seattle’s pioneer families. Few know that it was also home to a 21-acre amusement park, a band of gypsies, a traveling circus, and Seattle’s first professional baseball park.

Learn about the early pioneer days, the dawn of a new century in the 1900s, the pre-war and war years, and beyond—all with reference to world, national, and regional events. ... Read more

Ms. Thomas has done a careful, interesting job of organizing a lot of information in a most readable fashion.I particularly liked her tables about the population growth at the end of the sections and the time line presented inside the front cover. It was interesting to read about some of the names of streets known to us such as McGilvra Boulevard as we had not known anything about the McGilvra family previously.

I also appreciated the last chapter on the various residences that are still about and plan to bring our copy to the neighborhood so that I might be able to spot more of them. Her comments on the various businesses in Madison Park were also very interesting to read.

Book Description

Just as women in Greek myth are cast in roles ranging from the helpless and innocent to the manipulative and powerful, so women throughout the history of rhetoric have represented themselves as fulfilling roles that range from dependents or enablers of male authority to autonomous agents acting on their own. These essays examine the tactics women have employed in self-representation and the feminist rhetorics that result. Contributors examine both past and present practices, highlighting correspondences between them and the ways those practices have varied, succeeded, or failed.Essays in part 1 consider how women historically have found ways to speak and write, while negotiating the limitations of their positions as women, as well as their spiritual, class, and ethnic roles. Essays in part 2 study the formal genres, strategies, and techniques female rhetoricians have used; and the essays of part 3 consider the contemporary challenges faced by women rhetors in a pluralistic world and the strategies and genres they have inherited and transformed.Collectively, the essays look at the rhetorical issue of roles and representations by criss-crossing time and selecting particular issues and/or figures. Rhetorical Women is unique in that it juxtaposes several historical contexts in order to spotlight the strategies of the women rhetors.CONTRIBUTORSDorothy Allison Lillian Bridwell-BowlesKarlyn Kohrs CampbellLois Cucullu Julia DietrichJane DonawerthJane GallorYvonne MerrillHildy MillerCindy Moore Malea PowellJoy RitchieKate RonaldElizabeth West

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, not exactly what we were looking for
We were looking for ideas to redo our 70's redo bathroom in our 20's house, but we didn't really find much of what were looking for in this book. The like titled kitchen book on comparison, was much better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, could be better
I have a few problems with this otherwise useful book. Not all of the colors in the photos are true; when the caption says "turquoise and lavender" and the picture shows green and pink, there is something amiss. This kind of color misprint occurs in several of the photos.Don't depend on the photos for accurate period colors! Also, most of the bathrooms shown in the photos are large! Many bungalows were small with small bathrooms. It would be nice, and useful too, to have some pictures of dinky bungalow bathrooms. Also, I like at least a few floor plans.Photos don't always give you an accurate idea of the actual layout and dimensions.I admit that I am jealous of almost every one of the bathrooms shown. My 1930 bungalow has one small low-end original bath (if it ever had tile, it's long gone) and one minimal 3/4 bath added in the 1950s.

5-0 out of 5 stars Historically accurate awesomeness
This book full of historical accuracy - if that's your passion like it is mine, then you will love this book.It is NOT a "Here's the latest HGTV Craftsman trend" book, it is a book that tells you about original features, tiles, floors, tubs, toilets, etc. Some of these photos are museum-quality representations of an authentic bungalow bathroom. It's a fantastic read and is my favorite design and inspiration source for our upcoming bathroom renovation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Bungalow for me
This book is an accurate representation of bathroom styles in the first quarter of the last century. The purists will love it. If they ever plan to sell their home, I won't be interested.

While my home dates back to 1931 and I intend to remodel its original first floor bath to fit within its modest style, the baths illustrated are simply out of date. I don't believe that today's home buyer appreciates such precise historical accuracy in a bathroom. People want comfort and style even in an 1800s victorian. You can do stylish with subway tile but pink accent tile and stained oak wood trim around a clawfoot tub do not fit my definition. A spa bath is not appropriate but a bland, uninteresting, and frankly sometimes just plain ugly bath is worse. This book is full of the latter.

There are some good ideas on how to workaround the pitfalls of an older home's plumbing, electric layout and free-standing column radiators. My 19-year-old son also found the narrative very interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars So much fun to read and look at !
I'm a huge fan of old house bathrooms and kitchens, and this book is an absolute delight to look at and read. The pictures are spectacular, the book is filled with them. And there is a lot of great historical information as well.I think this book is especially useful if you are renovating an old house bathroom and need some inspiration or help with tile colors/shapes, fixtures, lighting, and decorative details. But it's also just plain fun to look at.:)This is definitely a book I will pull out over and over again. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For the movie buff who has everything
Quality graphic images of historical movie posters and informative stories about the films they promoted, fill a gap in historical study of movies and those who make them.A great gift idea!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and informative!
I bought this book for the library where I am a reference libarian as soon as I saw it, and it is worth every cent of the purchase price.

Now I have the title on my wish list, and I have hinted strongly to certain offspring that this book would certainly make a wonderful Mother's Day present!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book!
I purchased this book for my Sister-in-law, who is a film historian. She absolutely loved it.The artwork is fantastic....almost worth buying two copies so that you can remove and frame some pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Movie Posters
I was very interested in this book since my cousin, Jane Powell was one of he authors. I have to say I was very impressed and actually surprised about beautiful the book turned out.Anyone with an interest in movies will find the art of the posters interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Cinephiles
This book is a must-have for movie buffs, but I was bowled over by the beauty of the art. From the spectacular Batiste Madelena cover of Rudolph Valentino through dozens of creative renditions of original old-time movie posters, to the back cover depictions of Gloria Swanson, Norma Shearer, Walter Huston and Boris Karloff, the artistry of these unsung craftsmen is dazzling."Now Playing" is now prominently displayed on the coffee table in our living room. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
"Public Health for the 21st Century is a comprehensive consideration of the emerging challenges for public health policy makers. Its structure makes it accessible to those wishing to dip into specific areas as well as being both coherent and comprehensible to those who may wish to read the whole volume. It is a valuable addition to any public health library."
Journal of Environmental Health Research

"This is a timely and comprehensive review of the new public health. The book demonstrates a capacity and readiness of the public health community to engage the population to achieve the 'fully engaged scenario' that remains the major health challenge for the UK. Replacing 'political restlessness' with political resolve might be the key ingredient that has been missing."
Tribune

"The second edition of this text is a very welcome addition to the public health library. The sweep of its interests and the vision it encapsulates marks it out as a true standard bearer for public health into the 21st Century. Its approach is comprehensive and its subject matter compelling. In spite of the challenges ahead for public health, the book reminds us of the quality of those practicing and writing about the subject in the UK today."
Mike Kelly, Director of the Centre for Public Health Excellence, The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)

This bestselling book has been substantially updated to take account of changing policy and practice. The introduction has been re-written to form a new chapter giving a comprehensive overview of the field of public health, making the book much more accessible to a wider audience.

Throughout this book, the authors analyse and reflect upon the influence of history, research and procedures upon contemporary public health practice. The text explores the debates surrounding the meaning of public health and looks at the policy changes that are reshaping its context. Also examined are the contributions that epidemiology and health economics make to public health.

Public Health for the 21st Century is essential reading for those involved in developing and implementing policies for health improvement, health protection and the reduction of inequalities in health. It also appeals to a wider audience of professionals, lay people and students who are interested in the wider health and well being of their communities. ... Read more
