Excerpt: Derby Cathedral -The original church was founded by King Edmund I in about 943 as a royal collegiate church; however, there is no trace of its existence today. The current cathedral dates from the fourteenth century, although it appears to be based on an earlier medieval building, which drawings show was about the same size as the present church. It may be that it became structurally unstable and was pulled down. The tower dates from 1510 to 1530 and was built in the popular perpendicular gothic style of the time. Joan Waste was tried for heresy here in 1556. The execution took place on the Burton Road in Derby. Apart from the tower, the building was rebuilt in a classical style to the designs of James Gibbs of 1725. The building, previously known as All Saints' Church, became a cathedral by order in council on 1 July 1927. The cathedral contains the oldest ring of ten bells in the United Kingdom. Other treasures include an eighteenth-century nave with a wrought iron Rood screen by Robert Bakewell, the memorial to Bess of Hardwick, and the Cavendish brasses, including those of Henry Cavendish and Georgiana Spencer, the wife of one of the Dukes of Devonshire. According to the Derby Mountain Rescue Team the cathedral tower is 212 feet (65 m) tall. More than 150 members of the the Rescue team absailed down the tower for charity in 2009. In late 2005, it was discovered that a pair of Peregrine falcons had taken up residence on the Cathedral Tower. In 2006 a nesting platform was installed, and they nested here in April. The same pair successfully reared chicks in 2007, 2008 and again in 2009. Webcams were installed in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=142189 ... Read more

A talkative ten-year-old girl comes to live with two spinster aunts in a small New England town.Amazon.com Review
Author Jack London wrote Kate Douglas Wiggin a letter about her classic Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm from the headquarters of the First Japanese Army in Manchuria in 1904: "May I thank you for Rebecca?... I would have quested the wide world over to make her mine, only I was born too long ago and she was born but yesterday.... Why could she not have been my daughter? Why couldn't it have been I who bought the three hundred cakes of soap? Why, O, why?" Mark Twain called Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm "beautiful and warm and satisfying."

Who is this beguiling creature? The irrepressible 10-year-old Rebecca Rowena Randall burst into the world of children's book characters (and her new life in Maine) in 1903 when storybook girls were gentle and proper. A "bird of a very different feather," she had "a small, plain face illuminated by a pair of eyes carrying such messages, such suggestions, such hints of sleeping power and insight, that one never tired of looking into their shining depths.... " Soon enough, she wins over her prim Aunt Miranda, the whole town, and thousands of readers everywhere with her energetic, indomitable spirit. This beautiful trade edition features the artwork of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm's original illustrator Helen Mason Grose, with 6 full-color plates and 32 pen-and-ink drawings. (Ages 9 and older) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bring back the Spunky Victorian RiotGrrlz!
I loved Rebecca for the same reason I loved Jo March in _Little Women_ and _Anne of Green Gables_:she was bright, she was independent, and she was constantly in trouble!I agree with reviewers who say that the complex language and plucky heroine make today's vapid books for the Children's and Young Adults' market even more pathetic by contrast. If you look at the language of Victorian books, it's obvious that they didn't think children incapable of handling that kind of prose, and knew that if they encountered an unfamiliar word, they'd either figure it out from context or, if they were sufficiently interested in the story, find out from someone older or a dictionary. This book is fun both as a picture of turn-of-the-century small town life and as a reminder that some things never change.Rebecca's disasters with her beloved pink dress or the schoolboy with a crush who just won't leave her alone are just as easy to relate to as they were at the time they were written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Building a classic library for a granddaughter
They don't seem to require reading classic literature in the schools any more, so I decided to build a classics library for my 12-year old granddaughter. She has read them all, including this one, so it wasn't a bad idea. Now, if I could just get her to call her old grandfather more often....

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for little girls
One of my three favorite books from my childhood. I have read reviews of how difficult this book is to understand or read by small children. Nonsense! I first read this book when I was 6 years old, one year after learning English and had no problem with it. I read it many times until my mother threw it away. I looked for it for a long time and finally found it 54 years after first reading it. I still love it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay Book
This book is okay. I wouldn't read it more than twice. It was really boring till the end. Then it got good. I would recomend this book to kids from ages 9 - teens. Rebecca has a life that i would never want. She is so happy and bouncy. I don't like that. In my opinion, this is book is not very exciting. I was so glad when I finished it. Because then I could read a better book. It was kind of hard to follow, cause a lot of things were going on at once. I really think younger kids should read it. I don't think it deserves a classic. But that is just in my opinon. Read it if you would like. I just didn't like it. It was okay though. So good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Eternal Rebecca Randall
Rebecca has been my friend since I read her story in a cheap Whitman hardback when I was a little girl. A lively and creative 10-year-old girl is sent to her maiden aunts to receive a good education, but chafes under the restrictive yoke of her elder aunt. As Rebecca learns to channel her energies into positive action, she remains unquenched by her dour aunt and lends joy to both the younger aunt, but also the elderly Cobbs and her best friend, Emma Jane Perkins. The vocabulary in the story may be a bit high for younger readers as REBECCA was not actually written as a children's story; it was the best seller of the year 1904. There is a sequel, NEW CHRONICLES OF REBECCA, that is worth finding, with more adventures of Rebecca, the Simpson children, and even Emma Jane. ... Read more
