5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Latest Contribution from the Journal Revolution Sisters and Pam Detlor
I enjoyed this book immensely.Meeting in the Ladies Room offers an intimate peek into the lives of a broad array of women.I was intrigued by this idea before I ordered the book. Once the book arrived, it truly exceeded my expectations. The remarkable quality of the photography brings the women to life, and the brief paragraphs accompanying the photos give the women an added dimension that made me feel as though I had just hung out with each of them.Meeting in the Ladies Room gives its readers a chance to see women through their own eyes, and the insights are refreshing, humorous and touching. Don't miss the chance to get to know these amazing women!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
The up-close and personal photos really make you feel like part of the "Meeting." I loved seeing such a variety of ladies, and connecting with all of them, even if at first they looked different from me.
A really beautiful, eye-openingand heart-expanding experience.
I have the printed version of this book as well. It is even more wonderful in full color. ... Read more

Product Description
In January 1996, Judy Molnar was six foot one, weighed 330 pounds, and was a size 26W. She didn't own a bike or a swimsuit. At her annual physical, after hearing the doctor's usual sermon about her weight, she accidentally saw the phrase "morbidly obese" written on her chart. Only then did Judy realize that she had to take some action or she might not be around for her next yearly exam. And on that day she set out to learn how to eat, exercise, and get into shape.
Having tried all of the traditional starve-yourself, go-for-the-burn programs that just left her drained and in pain (and ultimately made her eat more), Judy knew that she was going to have to create a program that worked for her. Over the course of two and a half years, through working with coaches, nutritionists, and trainers, she developed an incredible program that has helped her lose 130 pounds and 12 clothing sizes. In 1999, she even completed one of the most strenuous sporting events: the World Ironman Triathlon Championship in Hawaii. Television host Rosie O'Donnell heard about Judy's commitment to a healthy lifestyle and invited her to come on the show to share her story. Rosie was so inspired by her message--"Eat less and move more" --that she created a position for Judy on her show by making her the Official Chub Club Coach.
You Don't Have to Be Thin to Win is Judy's special recipe for health and fitness. She shows you everything from how to buy sneakers and how to find a way to move that works for your body and your time constraints to how to get through a grocery store and come out with foods that will make you a winner. And Judy is inspiring: Even if you feel that getting your body in shape is impossible, her story and many of the poignant success stories from her work as the Official Chub Club Coach will get you off the couch and moving. Judy's story and this program demonstrate that anyone--no matter what size, shape, or age--can lose weight and become healthy to enjoy a richer, fuller, and more active life.

Not just another fitness book

"In 1996, I got scared. I went to the doctor and learned that I was no longer fat, I was 'morbidly obese.' This was no longer about a dress size; this was life and death. And so I began an extraordinary journey from being a 330-pound sedentary woman who ate five or six doughnuts for breakfast to losing 130 pounds, getting fit enough to compete in the World Ironman Championship Triathlon in Hawaii, and becoming the Official Chub Club Coach for The Rosie O'Donnell Show. While I might not fit the conventional image of an athlete or fitness expert, I am healthy and hap-pier than I've ever been. I wrote this book for people who, like me, have tried every program from A to Z--diets, gyms, trainers --and are looking for real and realistic results. You Don't Have to Be Thin to Win tells my story, illustrates my program (the only one that has ever worked for me), and shows you how you, too, can win your health and life back."

                Official Chub Club CoachAmazon.com Review
Judy Molnar was always the tallest kid in the class and alwaysplayed sports, mainly basketball and volleyball. By college, shewas 6'1", 180 pounds, and very fit. Yet her coach saw her as "alarge woman with a weight problem" and tried to put her on a1,200 calorie diet to get her to an impossible 150 pounds. Theresult was that Molnar became scale-obsessed and started to hatetraining and working out. She quit sports, took a sedentary jobafter college, and ate herself up to a weight more than the 350 pounds herscale registered. You Don't Have to Be Thin to Win is thestory of her "journey from the couch to the course" to reclaimher health, and her "personal recipe of goal setting, education, enthusiasm, and a fair bit of sweat." She shares excerpts fromher journal about her triumphs, setbacks, and day-to-day effortstoward fitness. Her lifestyle completely changed--her fitnesstraining became the center, and a few years after making herchange, she was racing and doing triathlons. She dropped 130pounds, went "from doughnut junkie to healthy and fit," andbecame Rosie O'Donnell's Chub Club coach. After telling herpersonal story, she helps you move more and eat better withmotivational strategies, tips for getting in shape, descriptions of a fewdifferent activities and how to start, and nutritionalfacts. This book is so motivating that you're likely to get upfrom the couch and read it on the treadmill. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivation for the Completely Unmotivated!
I'm a big woman, and I do mean big.Even as a kid, I didn't like to excercise, and it didn't change when I got to adulthood. But, about a year ago, I went to the Dr's and got the shock of my life when I stepped on the scale.I was about 30 lbs. heavier than I'd ever been before, and I'd been pretty darn heavy to begin with!I was upset and rather scared, because I didn't have a clue how to change the situation.

I work part time in a bookstore for a little extra money (I teach high school), and one night came across this book.I was fascinated from the minute I saw it.For the first time, somebody was telling me that I could truly be physically fit without weighing 120 lbs!Judy's book helped me get started on a physical activity regimen that I have been shocked to discover I actually enjoy.Using some of her techniques gave me the guidelines and the oomph to get started, the hardest part of any change in lifestyle.I went from having going from my classroom to the office as the high point of my daily activity to spending approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours at the gym about 6 days a week.It feels wonderful.I've lost some weight, although not as much as I might like, but I'm healthier than I've been in ages.I've gotten control of some long time back problems, my blood pressure is the best it's been since I was in college, and in spite of a multitude of allergies and asthma, I'm breathing better than I have in years.Without Judy's book for inspiration, I'd never have started. She truly can make you believe that *anyone* is capable of setting a fitness goal and acheiving it.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a motivational book.
I ran into this book at the Health Science Library that is part of the Health Sciences Center.I liked the many examples from real people. My life experience has been much like the author's and I can relate to her life pattern of college athletics, sedentary job, accident, and now trying to get it all pulled together in terms of exercise and weight control.I too am motivated by "goals" and found this section of the book very helpful.I liked the sample training program and the explanations for the investment (e.g.,personal trainer, doctor's check up, etc.).Great book.A "Godsend" book for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Motivational
This audiobook gets 5 stars for Motivation - but overall 4 stars because I think Judy's experience as a teen and college student was so sports oriented that I found it hard to relate at times. Not everyone will want to run a triatholon, but her words and her wonderful reading style make me want to get out and move more.

It should be noted that this audiobook is NOT ABRIDGED as is written here on Amazon.I've listened to the whole audiobook twice now and I am excited because there are certain sections I've written down for whenever I am in need of a quick pep talk. Her methods are sound and right to the point.Get with a nutritionist and understand HOW to eat correctly.Get into a wellness group for support and sharing.Get more active by walking, running, swimming - whatever you can do.She makes you feel like you can do it as long as you stay consistent and always keep looking forward to a goal.

One main thing I've learned is that I should not put my goal in terms of weight only and say "By next Labor Day I will weigh X"... instead, I should say by the end of this month I will be walking 2 miles three times a week. I never thought of walking or running in a 5K (3.1 miles) event.... but why not? Why not put some time toward a good cause like "Race for the Cure" and breast cancer research.I just never grew up with any sports type goals.

Her eating plan is lowfat - high carb.I think that one plan does not fit all, but that would be up to each individual and their doctor. She does however make good suggestions to reduce fats, reduce sugars etc.and she warns that there are no quick fix diet plans - you need to work hard.I am off to purchase a good pair of walking shoes... my first step toward getting healthy and changing my life!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to WIN, read Judy's Book
Reading this book was a Godsend for me. As I was reading Judy's words,I thought she was writing about me. In fact she was writing about me.Her words spoke to me and it made me feel as if the burdens of weight loss, being unhealthy were things that I could confront and deal with. As I gotfurther into the book, I realized that making the change in my life beginswith me, but more than that. It begins with a belief and a faith that I cando it!And I have done it, and I'm still doing it. I've gone from 288pounds to 225. And let me tell you, the freedom that comes with takingpride in yourself, in your body, in you is awesome. This book does nottalk down to you, it does not lecture you nor does it make you feel as ifgoing for the gold is a difficult and unattainable goal. In fact, it makesyou want to put the book down, go out there and begin the journey to ahealthy life.I hope everyone has the opportunity to read this book andknow that it can make a major difference in your life. It's not about beingthin and appealing for the outside world. It's about getting healthy andbeing the best that you can be. For yourself....and that's what this bookis all about... If you read it, I promise you, you'll be a winner in notime. Thanks Ms. Molnar for a great, and positive book. Please pleaseplease.. do a sequel... I await for it anxiously.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not All It's Cracked Up To Be!
I recently finished reading this book and I must say it was a disappointment. After reading all the great reviews, I decided to order it. I am not a fan of triathlons, 5K's, 10K's etc., so I had trouble focusingon this book. It had most of the usual info. that a diet/exercise book has,but it did not motivate me at all because I don't lead (or care to lead)her athletic lifestyle. I figured that since she was overweight like me, Iwould be able to relate to her story, but I couldn't. She had been anathlete all of her life. I, on the other hand, have been sedentary all ofmy life. She did, however, have a reference section and list of websites onnutrition, eating disorders, etc. I hate to give a bad review to a bookthat everyone seems to love so much, but for those of you out there thatdon't share her lifelong love of athletics, I wouldn't want you to wasteyour money. I truly admire her and the fact that she wrote a book about hertremendous weight loss, but I just could not relate to this book. Foranyone out there who wants to read a really good, informative andinteresting book on nutrition, weight loss and exercise, I highly recommendStrong Women Stay Slim by Miriam Nelson. ... Read more

Product Description
The Lesbian and The Womanizer is a collection of humorous, naughty essays that have been published in the UK and Australia and not been available until now in the US.For some reason the US magazine market finds them too un-PC (for some reason it is okay to go from being straight to queer, but NOT the other way around--although my friends could care less and most of them are gay) or too sexy. The title piece was first published in The Guardian, Observer. There are five essays in all, each funnier than the last... I hope!

Included in this collection are two premiere pieces that have yet to be publishes: "Skype Me Baby" and "The I Luv Ewe". Thanks to digital media I am now able to make them available to my reading public. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful comedy of the sexes
One of the things that makes life so enjoyable is that you never quite know what is going to happen next. So, when critically acclaimed lesbian writer, Heather Dune Macadam, is dumped by her lame artist girlfriend it seems like the end of the world. Enter James: a dashingly handsome, talented British writer whose umpteenth relationship has just collapsed as a result of his restless philandering. The two fall head over heels in love. And out of this unlikely encounter, Macadam weaves a wonderfully humorous,heart-warming tale about the foibles of men and women. Brilliant

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hysterical!!!! A must read!
One of the most refreshing things I have read in a long time! I was laughing out loud with each sentence and am still chuckling to myself thinking about it. I'm so glad I came about Heather Dune Macadam's collection of essays, I am instantly a fan and am purchasing everything else available. A must have! ... Read more

91. Lesbian Ethics: Toward New Values
by Sarah Lucia Hoagland

5-0 out of 5 stars indispensible
Hoagland is a brilliant and incisive writer. She has a gift for presenting incredibly nuanced and complex ideas crystal clear.

I borrowed a copy from a friend and marked, and noted, and dog-eared, and highlighted it so much, I needed to buy her a new copy. The content is very rich, and there is much that is worthy of note within its pages.

Most importantly, Hoagland presents with clarity, refreshing hope, and conviction the idea that it is indeed possible to have authentic, free, loving, and equal relationships between human beings, relationships that are simply not based on domination and submission. Her goal is "moral revolution", "a conceptual framework, a new paradigm, in which oppression is not automatic - where rape, pogroms, slavery, lynchings, and colonialism are not even _conceivable_."

For anyone who shares Hoagland's hunger for such a paradigm, this book is truly indispensable. It is an excellent book for study in a community or collective with common goals, as it outlines concepts and tools that are essential to building authentic and egalitarian communities. This includes completely uprooting values about domination/subordination that are so central to mainstream (male-centered) anglo-european ethics from our thinking, our language, our behavior, our relationships, and our work, and replacing these values with a fundamental honoring of people's moral agency (our choices, our freedoms).

Again, Hoagland is concerned with fundamental culture change. She is a big-picture thinker who is encouraging those of us engaged in struggles against oppression to not just win battles but to win the war, to not accept the terms we are handed but to create and breathe meaning into new terms, to not remain riveted on "the masters", but to turn to and attend to each other, thereby creating whole new meanings, and whole new worlds.

5-0 out of 5 stars A text for lesbian separatism
Sarah Hoagland's "Lesbian Ethics.." is a startling revelation about the nature of social structures and the nature of opression. She critiques the status quo systems of heterosexuality, provides the readerwith a lens to view our world, and offers a refreshing glimpse at apossible future.

Hoagland explains that the current systems of dominationand opression are fed by heterosexuality, the refusal to acknowledge otherform of sexuality. By rebelling within designated avenues of rebellion, andreforming within the expected lines of reform, those who wish to change thesystem unwittingly breathe life into it.

Hoagland concludes that in orderto defeat the system, we must separate from it, and in this revelation, sheincludes a brilliant metaphor about a king and his kingdom. She argues thata king cannot be a king with no subjects. In this way, separation from thesystem collapses it.

Though from a praxis standpoint, her conclusion isvague and formless, her arguments stand as guidelines for the nextrevolution: the sexually opressed versus the heterosexual opressors.

Ienjoyed this book, and it has become a window by which I can view theworld. ... Read more
