1-0 out of 5 stars Really People?
I will never make FUN of fat people, however why are we glorifying being overweight? HELLO!!! Do we not care about the health risks to ourselves? The example we are setting for younger generations? I don't care about looks, I care about living longer, running faster and jumping higher! I want to live to see my grandchildren, not die of a heart attack at age 30! There is NO excuse for being overweight. I work in a pharmacy, i have heard all the excuses and seen all the people driving those stupid motorized carts because they can't walk, their fat sagging over the edges. Do you REALLY want to live like that? I have no sympathy. WORK HARD, STAY HEALTHY AND LOSE WEIGHT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very funny
Camryn Manheim ("The Practice," "Ghost Whisperer," etc.) tells her life story in a humorous memoir about her long battle of the bulge.Stories of her teenage drug use, grad school tribulations, dating woes, and eventual successes in TV are told with wit and sassy charm.

I've never seen Manheim in movies or TV, but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of her book. She's an excellent writer. In the nineties, she wrote and starred in a one-woman show called, "Wake up, I'm Fat!," and much of the show's material is in the book so it reads like a good stand-up comedy routine. She balances humor with the sadness and frustration of being overweight and a plea for fat acceptance. This is an entertaining and eye-opening book.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny and inspiring
Camryn gives a very entertaining glimpse into her tribulations and growth at the hands of the entertainment business.I especially enjoyed the chapter telling how Tony Kushner cast her as the ingénue.I'm so glad actorjourneys.com recommended this book; you're sure to cheer for the underdog triumph.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but she seems to have altered her opinion about fat and health
I love Camryn Mannheim and her book. I'd give this a 4.5 if I could, because since she wrote the book, she's lost quite a bit of weight and puts the reasoning for it on being a mother.

I hated it when Carnie Wilson went from being a NAAFA member and spokesperson for loving yourself at any size to being obsessed with being thin. She's admitted to lying about why she had WLS and has made a snootful of money pimping it to others. She has been a major factor in the deaths of hundreds of (mostly) women who didn't make it after the surgery and her recommendation of it.

And I am very saddened by Mannheim's abandonment of her principals of fat-acceptance and the people who have supported her and her book.

Isn't there anyone out there who will stay committed to the cause and not cave in when someone runs some cash under their noses or threatens their career if they don't lose weight?

Ack. Love the book. Disappointed in Mannheim today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read This
This was both an intertaining a introspective read. Camryn Manheim is funny, smart, human, and beautiful. This book made me look at the excuses I make for my failures and the things I allow to stand in the way of my success.I was able to relate to Camryn much more than I could relate to Oprah when I read her book. It is a book for all women, all mothers, and a book I would want my boyfriend to read. Thank you Camryn, I wish we could meet some day. ... Read more

Product Description
Linda Richman, self-described typical Jewish girl from Long Island and the most popular speaker at the world-renowned Canyon Ranch Spa, presents a tears and laughter guidebook guaranteed to help readers withstand lifes hard knocks. The first four decades of Linda Richmans life were rife with tragedy: She lost her father at eight and her mother to depression soon after; later, she lost her husband to compulsive gambling; her son to a car accident; and spent 11 years battling agoraphobia. But now, Linda shares her life story and how she learned that when all is said and done, the only cure that works, and the one that takes the most courage, is laughter. Combining wry, self-deprecating humor with hard-knocks wisdom, Linda makes it her mission to get everyone to shake off the blues and make their way back into the world. Because she knows from experience that when life makes you crythats the best time to laugh. Through the unexpected celebrity thrust upon her by Mike Myers (Myers is Lindas son-in-law and based the Saturday Night Live Coffee Talk character on her), Linda is connected to many major celebrities, including Deepak Chopra, Katie Couric, Barbra Streisand, and Rosie ODonnell, who has promised to put her on her show when the book is published. As a lecturer at the renowned Canyon Ranch Spas in Tucson, Arizona, and Lenox, Massachusetts, Linda speaks to hundreds of people a week about having the courage to laugh through their pain. Lindas wisdom is refreshingly down-to-earth and reads like the advice from an old friend. Her grounded personality, more than her incidental celebrity, drives the book.Amazon.com Review
Remember "Coffee Talk," the Saturday Night Live skit with theBarbara Streisand-loving, constantly verklempt characterportrayed by Mike Myers, who encouraged listeners to "talkamongst themselves"? Linda Richman was the inspiration for her. (Myersis her son-in-law; a sharp sense of humor apparently runs in thefamily.) Like the "Coffee Talk" lady, Richman teaches people how tohandle suffering through laughter. She's so good at it that she teaches aseminar on the topic at the posh Canyon Ranch Health Resort inArizona.

But she speaks from some harrowing experiences. Severalfriends and relatives have battled cancer. Her 29-year-old son died ina car crash. Her depressed, institutionalized mother died a few dayslater after falling into a coma (her final words to her daughter:"Linda, you got fat"). In case you're thinking, "Sheesh, howdepressing, who wants to read about that stuff?" think again. Herfriend Rosie O'Donnell, who wrote the foreword, raves about"Linda-isms." Richman is a modern-day Norman Cousins, but she talkslike your best friend--a very witty, resilient friend--offering aninspiring tribute to the power of humor. (Or is it denial?) Heck, whatdifference does it make, when Richman's "pity party" has you laughingand crying so hard simultaneously? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read for anyone going through changes
I had purchased this hardback book after seeing Linda appear on the Oprah show many years ago (she was promoting this book), and never got around to reading it.Recently, I was packing my things to move and started reading this long-forgotten book. I was amazed at how timely it was for me to have rediscovered it at this juncture in my life.I have experienced quite a bit of loss in the last three years- having lost both of my parents, my grandmother, and 3 dogs.I read this book a few pages at night before going to sleep all during the move. The book made me realize that everyone has rough patches to get through- a loss or two of some sort or another. After reading it, I gave the book to a friend who is having some hard times at the moment.I told him not to give it back after reading, but to pass it on to someone else whom he felt needed a lift. This book was conversational, as if Linda was talking directly to me.I appreciated her down-to-earth tone and humor.

4-0 out of 5 stars OMG...... I thought I had issues in life.

I just finished this book and OMG.... I thought I had issues in life. I'm actually embarrassed to even think that my life has been any where NEAR the disappointments that hers has. I can not say enough about the content of this book. Great information to use everyday. I want more of her books to read....... Thank You for sharing your story.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Just like buttah
She's hysterical! Unless you've done your own "work" there are things ya just won't get. But that's okay and who knows it might plant a seed to do your own. I found myself cracking up in places where others might see morbid. But that's the point. When you've come up against tragedies you have no control over you can choose to roll over and die, or laugh your way back to living. I really like her list at the end of the book. Good common sense stuff. Of course it's not meant to be a cure all and refreshingly not written by a shrink, or new age self-helper or pseudo psychologist (dr. phil, p'tooey). Linda is real and has a gift, more so than a lot of degreed professionals in practice so take this treasure and enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Poignant and engaging
I appreciated Nancy's humor and wit. She is an inspiration and has gone on with life even when it didn't seem like living. As a person who has lost a child and had other challenges in life, I was able to relate and admire her will and tenacity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughing through my tears
I first read Linda Richman's wonderful book about 3 1/2 years ago, six months after my 31 year old son died.I never thought I would smile again, let alone laugh but Linda made me laugh.I also learned that I was stronger than I thought after reading how nutty she became. I have reread sections of the book many times, whenever I am feeling particularly down.

I also loved Rosie O'Donnell's introduction. I am not a Rosie admirer but her intro to the book was priceless.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost a child and is in the depths of despair.Linda is definitely inspirational and she helped me more than she will ever know. ... Read more
