More went on in sixth grade than the rest of my life put together. In just two months, I fell in love, watched my family break into pieces, and came this close to getting beaten to a pulp along with all my friends -- not to mention meeting Mickey Mantle and getting attacked by the biggest juvenile delinquent in the school. It's like this year was a nuclear chain reaction, exploding the scared little kid I used to be and turning me into a more grown-up self.

Things are not always how they seem. That's what Marc Chaikin learns in this touching, beautifully wrought coming-of-age novel set in the 1960s. When his sixth-grade class, 6-321, gets caught up in a feud with a rival class, Marc's life is turned upside-down. As he watches the things and the people he took for granted change before his eyes, he learns that maybe he has the power to change them -- and that he doesn't have to stay invisible in order to survive. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 6-321 lover!
I thought this book was one of the best books I've ever read. It's a coming-of-age story and also has some comedy, drama, and sorrow. My favorite part was when the children heard of Kennedy's assasination and realized how unimportant their school yard fighting really was. I recomend this book to people of all ages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better for younger readers
This book started out really well, and I thought I would like it a lot. But really, nothing exciting happened. My favorite part was probably when the boys are telling the secrets that they know. Also, why does the principal believe that Marc always has something to do with a fight when he was the one being beat up? Better for younger readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nostalgic Trip
It seems strange to use the word "halcyon" to describe the turbulent 60's, the era of Vietnam and the Kennedy assassination. However, Mr. Laser lovingly recreates that era when children did not have computers or video games to distract them...when school projects were joint efforts...when neighborhood schools were really neighborhood schools. Yet, today's young readers will realize that their wants, needs, fears, desires are not that different from children of yesteryear. This is a book for young readers to enjoy.I think their parents will enjoy it too. What a wonderful way to bond with one's children. ... Read more

Johann Wolff, a German scientist and +¬migr+¬, resettles in a Midwestern university town after World War II, and within months he mysteriously disappears. A half century later, Ted Sandstrom, an experimental physicist, announces to a small audience of his fellow scientists that he has discovered a method for generating vast amounts of power with a small quantum energy device. The scientists include Nolan Kilkenny, a former Navy Seal who will transfer Ted's research into the industrialized sector, and Oksanna Zoschenko, a Ukranian physicist who understands that Sandstrom's work has vast implications for the global economy as well as the future of science. The connection between Sandstrom and Wolff is at the heart of this suspense thriller; Wolff's missing notebooks not only presage Sandstrom's research, but also hold the key to utilizing it to change the world.Meanwhile, Victor Orlov, a powerful Russian industrialist, sends his own private army of killers to steal Sandstrom's work and turn it over to his own scientists to create a vast new industry that will destabilize the economic and geopolitical balance. Orlov's only obstacle is Kilkenny (from Spyder Web), who makes a welcome appearance in Quantum. He's a hero in the Tom Clancy tradition, a one-man army. The sometimes plodding story will appeal primarily to readers with enough scientific knowledge to understand the complicated physics of Wolff's and Sandstrom's work and a compelling interest in how new technology impacts the world economy. --Jane AdamsAmazon.com Review

3-0 out of 5 stars A review of the book on tape
For once this was an abridgment to a book that was read on tape in which I didn't feel like something important was left out.

Unfortunately, the plot and the characters were only so-so. Jerry O'Connell read the story - and at first I thought that would be a big plus since I've liked most of the stuff that he has done. However, this time I was not impressed. Not his best work.

Nolan Kilkenny, who should be known as 'the one man army' based on his unstoppable one man performances against several teams of battle-tested, better-armed former Russian Special Forces throughout the book, is a tiresome character. Many of the supporting characters were much more interesting and I would have preferred it if some of them would have had a greater role throughout the book.

I give this one a grade of C+.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some characters not very believable
Quantum was a decent story from beginning to end.I had a bit a trouble keeping its pace when the story got bogged down in explaining complex mathematical and scientific concepts.A few of the characters were hard to believe.Nolan got shot twice and injured a half dozen other ways, yet never lost a fight, and never even felt pain from his injuries. He also was shooting a dozen people throughout the book, and never once was questioned about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.Kelsey somehow lived through two kidnappings, when her kidnapper killed pretty much anything that moved during the story.I think I could try another Tom Grace story, but I probably won't rush out to buy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Complex characters elevate this above standard action fare
Shady Russian industrialists attempt to wrest control of an amazing new energy device from the American scientists who developed it.Tom Grace's story doesn't really add anything new to the techno-thriller genre, but it is nevertheless interesting due to some multi-faceted characterizations: even the featured good guys have some dark secrets and less than savory aspects to their personalities.Good pacing, nicely drawn secondary characters, and a story that doesn't overstay its welcome also help things along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time Spent Enjoyably
Tom Grace's second book was even better than his first -- Sypder Web.While Sypder Web and Quantum were quick and enjoyable reads, Quantum is more polished.

Although Quantum's characters and technical explanations lack the depth and detail, respectively, of a Clancy novel, the trade off is that the reader can actually move towards the end of the book in reasonably short order.

Unlike many other books of the genre, Quantum is a book that can be left on the coffee table for the enjoyment of nearly anyone in the household because it is devoid of gratuatus sex -- in the same vein as the late Robert Ludlum -- and is less violent than any episode of Xena, Warrier Princess.

I strongly suspect that Tom's next book will continue to surpass our expecations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Here He Comes to Save the Day
RE: AUDIO TAPE VERSION.Scientist/businessman/Navy SEAL and all around good guy Nolan Kilkenny takes on the former Soviet Union's top evil industrialist, its most treacherous commandos, and the 21st century cyber world to prevent an earth-shaking discovery from falling into the wrong hands. It's a mismatch of course. A routine thriller, Quantum does feature a nice twist revelation about the long-dead superphysicist whose work prompts much of the mayhem. You don't need to be scientifically-inclined to follow the story but it helps if you enjoy graphic ninja violence.3 stars and no more - as in don't buy a ticket, but still rent the video. ... Excerpt: Raymond Gerhardt Hunthausen (born August 21, 1921) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, serving as Archbishop of Seattle from 1975 to 1991. Hunthausen was born in Anaconda, Montana. He graduated from Carroll College in Helena, Montana and from St. Edward Seminary in Kenmore, Washington. On June 1, 1946 he was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Church in Helena. In 1957 Monsignor Hunthausen became president of Carroll College. He had been chemistry professor there, serving at the same time first as dean of men and then as both the football and basketball coach. He was later appointed bishop of the diocese of Helena by Pope John XXIII and ordained as such on August 30, 1962. He was the newest and youngest American bishop at the start of the Second Vatican Council a few months later. His tenure as bishop of Helena was marked by increased lay involvement in church matters, the establishment of a mission in Guatemala, the closure of several Catholic elementary and high schools, and the strengthening of religious education programs which function in every diocesan parish. He was appointed Archbishop of Seattle, Washington by Pope Paul VI and retired effective August 21, 1991 (his 70th birthday), after years of controversies that included an investigation coordinated by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI. In a letter to Archbishop Hunthausen, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger wrote that "The Archdiocese should withdraw all support from any group which does not unequivocally accept the teaching of the Magisterium concerning the intrinsic evil of homosexual activity. Product Description
Jerry O'Connell lends his talents to this delicious romantic comedy, ---more Cary Grant then Hugh Grant---begins on a New York to Los Angeles flight.

When Peter Russell finally meets the woman of his dreams he falls as madly in love as you can on a flight from New York to LA.Her name is Holly. She's achingly pretty with strawberry-blonde hair, and reads Thomas Mann for pleasure. She gives Peter her phone number on a page of The Magic Mountain, but in his room that night Peter finds the page is inexplicably, impossibly, enragingly...gone.

So begins the immensely entertaining story of Peter and his unrequited love for his best friend's girl; of Charlotte and her less-than-perfect marriage to a man in love with someone else; of Jonathan and his wicked and fateful debauchery; and of Holly, the impetus for it all. Along the way, there's the evil boss, the desirable temptress, miscommunications, misrepresentations, fiendish behavior, letters gone astray, and ultimately, an ending in which every character gets his due. Both incisive and wonderfully funny, this is a brilliantly understated comedy of manners in which love lost is found again.

"James Collins has written a romantic, funny and insightful page turner about love in modern times, missed opportunities and the wheel of fate (with a blow-out!) that is so engaging and real, you will find it impossible to put down.Peter Russell is an everyman filled with longing, lust and good sense. I promise you will root for him as fate throws him curves aplenty on his path to true love. BEGINNER'S GREEK and Peter Russell are keepers."
-- Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author of Lucia, Lucia and Big Stone GapAmazon.com Review
James Collins's Beginner's Greek is a tender tale of how love conquers all, even if it takes longer than some might be willing to wait. Chick Lit fans especially will appreciate the uniquely male perspective that Collins, who spent most of his career as a journalist and an investment banker, brings to this modern fairy tale.

When 27-year-old Peter Russell boards a cross-country flight to Los Angeles, he fully expects to sit next to the love of his life. As luck would have it, he sits next to Holly Edwards, with whom he falls in love instantly. A lost phone number leads to years of wondering "what if," until Peter's best friend Jonathan introduces him to his new girlfriend, who is of course the same Holly of Peter's dreams. After Jonathan and Holly marry, Peter settles down with Charlotte, a Francophile who Peter tries to tolerate, but mostly just evokes feelings of pity and hatred. Of course, as with any fairy tale, the possibility for a happy ending is never truly out of reach, and Beginner's Greek is chock full of twists and turns to keep the action going.

While some of the dialogue may make readers feel like they just stepped out of a Victorian novel ("Oh no! I had no idea it was so late! Poor Peter! I'm sure you were coming to fetch me!"), Collins's characters convey enough depth to keep readers engaged through some of the more fanciful stretches of this captivating novel. --Gisele Toueg ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Feel Good Book Touched with Delicious Irony
Peter takes his seat on a flight from New York to L.A. hoping a young, pretty, talented, witty girl, who is good at conversation, will sit next to him. He imagines they'll fall in love and live happily ever after. And curiously it happens, well the girl sits next to him and they fall in love, but happily ever after is going to take awhile.

The girl, Holly, tears a page out of Thomas Mann's book -- The Magic Mountain, heavy reading, at least I thought so back in College -- writes her number on it and gives it to Peter, asking him to call. But alas, he loses the number.

Years later he finds her again, but as luck would have it, bad in Peter's case, she is his best friend Jonathan's girl. Jonathan is a writer and is well aware Peter and Holly are in love with each other, but neither one of them knows that their love is reciprocated, so Jonathan lies to both of them about each other and marries Holly.

Still Peter and Holly become best friends and it just eats away at Peter that Jonathan has so many affairs, that he can get any girl he wants. Not able to take it anymore, Peter proposes to Charlotte, but on his wedding night Jonathan is killed by lighting right after doing the nasty with Charlotte's step-mom out on the golf course. Now Holly is free, but ironically Peter is not.

And so it goes in this book that will have take you on a delightful ride. The ending, though predictable, the route to it is not. And no way could I have foreseen what happens in the last chapter of this tremendously feel good book. Just a joy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bit of Tongue in Cheek Chick-Lit, I Think
Peter and Holly meet on a flight to Los Angeles from New York. During their time together they both come to believe that theirs is a relationship meant to be. Holly tears a page out from the book she's reading, writes the number where she's going to be on it and tells Peter to call. When he gets to his hotel room, Peter reaches into his pocket for the number, but the page is not there. Frantically he looks for it, but he gets no joy. The page is lost.

Peter goes about his life. He's a young executive on the fast track to advancement in his firm, however his immediate boss has it in for him and his best friend, the sorta famous writer, Jonathan Speedwell's new girlfriend just happens to be -- wait for it, wait for it, you guessed it -- Holly. And though Holly and Peter are in love, they are unable to tell each other, so Jonathan and Holly marry. A few years later, Peter proposes to the kinda pretty, kinda dull Charlotte. Jonathan is the best man and he is struck by lightning shortly after the couple say their I do's, but not before getting the bride's step-mom pregnant. Jonathan was not a nice man.

The step-mom goes to France. Charlotte figures out Peter and Holly are in love, but then she's got this sorta aristocratic boyfriend in France, so she goes off to France as well, where she learns quite a bit from her step-mom. Peter gets in dutch at work, gets out of dutch, gets invited to the big boss's house for dinner, brings Holly as a date, as dull Char is over in France, and who do you think the big boss falls in love with?

I could go on, but I've gotta leave a bit to the imagination and I've gotta leave you hanging a bit, so that you'll read the book. A good book by the way. At first it was a bit hard for me to get into. It seemed like chick-lit all the way, but it's not, if anything Mr. Collin's is poking a bit of fun at chick-lit and he does the job very nicely indeed. If you're a reader of that kind of book, you'll enjoy BEGINNER'S GREEK and if you're not, well I believe you're gonna enjoy it anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good summer read
The characters in this book are idealized but interesting enough. Enjoyable to read at the pool or beach. I found the ending very satisfying.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a find!
I don't read much modern fiction.I find most of it to be self-indulgent overly wordy nonsense, or else it is poorly edited and just plain stupid. This book, Beginner's Greek, captivated me from the start.Collins is a wordsmith I can relate to--a writer whose style is beautiful enough that I am happy to read whatever he is saying. He seems to follow obligatory patterns for novels, by going into more depth than is necessary on secondary characters; but he is such a good writer that I found myself interested in each and every tangent and character in this book.It is a labor of love and a work of art.Next paragraph might be considered spoiler.....

Though I did like the tangents about Julia in her home in France and all that stuff, I spent most of my time flying through this book desperately wanting to read more about Peter and Holly together. In the end, we don't get enough of that.Collins succeeds in convincing us that they really are in love with each other. But why are they only really together for about 10 pages of the book?I find myself wanting to read a whole book about them. And the fault for this, although clearly the author's in the true sense, in the book-sense is Peter Russell's.I am only reading this book because I love a good romance. The reason I love a good romance is I lived (and live) in one. And, from my male perspective, Peter Russell was way too indecisive and milquetoast in his quest after Holly. He was such a wuss!If I had been Peter (and don't get me wrong, I like Peter a lot), if I had lost Holly's phone number (which I would NOT have done), I would have called the airlines and somehow figured out how to get her name, and would have tracked her down. The point is, when you have "that thing" for a girl, you go-get-the-girl, at all costs.Nothing in life, ever, will matter more than that event. You GET THAT GIRL.And Peter, throughout this book, apparently feels the love inside, but he just never really goes for it.And I don't get that. What the hell is he waiting for?He lets her marry Jonathan, he lets her go off with Artie Beeche. Why doeesn't he ever feel urgency to go get Holly? Why is he so resigned to letting her be out there, without him?How can he stand to take all these walks in the park with her.Get the girl man!!I understand the chase is half, if not three quarters, of the fun in a book like this.Fine, then show me the chase.I was very frustrated by Peter's laid back, patient attitude about the whole thing. And Collins is never really comfortable in resolving the chase here.Geez, Holly's dad has to get involved to tell Peter to go for it, and calls him a coward (rightfully too!).Anyway, I cared about these characters. If Collins will write a book about Peter and Holly's life together, I will read it.Show them together!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Just a little off...
I really enjoyed the opening premise and felt Peter's anguish over the lost slip of paper. In many ways, the prose in this book is better than the story, and that's what kept me reading. Not a BAD book, and often enjoyable, but in the end it just doesn't resonate and I think it's because Peter is so bafflingly inept. He comes out with the right comment at the right moment here and there, and the rest of the time lets the world push him around. In the end, he seems to get happiness only because so many other people stepped in and set up the situation. I wanted to root for him, but also wanted to smack some sense into him. This is a first novel by this author, so I'd certainly consider reading a second one, hoping he's learned to make his main character a little stronger.I like my heroes to fight for their success, not get it handed to them on a plate because they're such a nice guy. Peter did come out swinging once. I'd have liked to see it happen more often. As it was, the ending just seemed to happen so conveniently.

I'd like to mention, again, that the prose itself is quite compelling. I'll look for more from this author. BTW, what DOES Peter do at the office after he's transferred? He's not working on the boxtops, so what's he doing? ... Read more

An unauthorized and unofficial look at the development of the NBC-TV pilot "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer" (2010). From its acceptance by NBC in Spring 2007 its unremarked-upon rejection in Spring 2010, "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer" was a quirky concept about an anxiety-ridden lawyer that had to coach his clients to defend themselves in court.Fronted by a top-notch cast including David Tennant ("Doctor Who"), Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development"), Jane Curtin ("30 Rock") and Jerry O'Connell ("Sliders"), media sources and fans alike had high hopes for the show's acceptance onto the NBC Fall schedule. However, in a season already packed with legal dramas, not all of them could earn the golden ticket of full-season production... and "Rex" was one that simply didn't make the cut. ... Product Description
In 1976 Felix Leu, a Swiss-born traveller, was accosted by a passer-by in Yugoslavia as the artist responsible for the tattoos of a travelling companion. He was not, but somehow then determined to learn the skills of the tattooist. With advice, he found and served his apprenticeship at Jocks Tattoo Shop, in Kings Cross, London. For almost 30 years Felix and his family travelled the world, learning their crafts and art. They now practice at their famous studios in Lausanne. In addition to Japanese and Indian styles, they are also linguists of the African traditions, having worked alongside Berber tribesmen, along with Indonesian, Polynesian and North American Indian masters. But perhaps what they are most known for is their own personalised style, described by afficionados as 'soft and psychedelic'. Filip, Felixs son, became specialised in large pieces, body-suits even. Clients, over several years, offer up their bodies, their hands and even their faces for decoration. The photographer Fabio Paleari has documented the studio and the designs of the Leus work in Lausanne and beyond. The results are phenomenal; no-one with skin can expect to be unaffected by his photographs, nor anyone who has admired the work of the tattooist, from Polynesia to King's Cross.Estee Lauder it is not.It is the miraculous and sublime.About the AuthorFabio Paleari was born in Milan in 1963. After finishing his studies in photography at UCLA, Paleari divided his time between advertising photography - working with among others Vogue and Saatchi & Saatchi - and photographing his extensive travels in Latin America, Australia and Morocco. Paleari is also a film-maker, and is presently collaborating with Italian television on a documentary film about Allen Ginsberg and another about the Leu Family.
