4-0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader
The short lived reinvention of the Wild Cats was unfortunately that, as it was certainly interesting.

Spartan developing a corporation to take over and really annoy a lot of people, Grifter as the beaten up drill sergeant, and the series was cut off just as it was going along nicely.

Definitely worth a look, this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Story is Groundbreaking
I remember buying my first Wildc.a.t.s comic book back when I was a kid. Never did I think that this story would grow up just as I did. I had ordered it from my local comic book store and waited over a month for its arrival, but if I had bought it off of Amazon, it probably would have reached me sooner. I was even able to get volume 2 but refused to read it until I got this into my possession.
Wow, did this story surpass my expectations of what it was going to be. You don't have to be familiar with all that has happened in this epic to be familiar with the story but if you are...good. This story is a beautifully written and drawn story that takes you into the objective of the hero, a former costumed super hero in his mission to bring the world together by building a brand. No way is this story hard to understand, I believe you don't have to be a business major to understand the true depth of this story. It is brilliant and by far one of the small jewels I have come to appreciate in my quest for fine graphic novel literature. If you're thinking about getting this book, get it. It is an idea so groundbreaking it is no surprise that it was overlooked by those who rate the validity of a comic books by there reinterpretation of modifying the cliché. This story is in no way a kid's game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your world, only better.
When Jim Lee and Brandon Choi started WildC.A.T.s 10 or so years ago, I don't think this is the direction they would have planned. However, since Joe Casey has gotten ahold of this book, he has turned it ino one of the most complex, underhanded, and compelling comics on the shelves today.

Jack Marlowe runs the Halo corporation. He has hundreds of thousands of employess around the world, not the least of which are Grifter, aka Cole Cash, Jack's one time teammate and former mercenary, and Agent Wax, a man who has remarkable powers of hypnotism and is member of an organization that investigates superhero crimes.Together, they set out to wage "a benevolent war for the future," as Jack calls it, buying out the competition and culling corrupt businesses for the market.Halo's number one invention - a battery that lasts forever - has taken the market by storm, rendering other batteries obsolete.

However, not everyone is playing alone to Jack's tune: C.C. Redozzo is having troubles with the F.B.I., and she'll use Grifter, Wax, and Jack Marlowe to accomplish her end. What happens when she manipulates Grifter into fighting a man that can't be killed? How will it affect Jack's plans?

Mixing corporate intrigue, skewed morality, and complicated characters, Wildcats 3.0 is a comic that asks the question, "What does a superhero do when there's no one to punch?".This first trade paperback introduces you to the characters and their situations, and is the perfect jumping on point for anyone interested in intelligent, mature comics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good stories
I'm glad I got this book. It contained good individual stories in the Batman mythos while continuing certain underlying stories and progressing towards Batman RIP. I recommend this book to Batman fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Scarface, Zatanna and more
With this collection, Dini continues his above average run on Detective. Not every issue he puts out is a classic, but his highs far outweigh the lows.He starts us off with an Epilogue to the underwhelming Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul crossover. It makes for a fitting resolution, but feels a little tacked on.Then we have The Wonderland Gang, which is the weakest story in the book.I've never been a big Hatter fan, and he doesn't do much to change my mind here.Other than some great artwork from Dustin Nguyen, this story feels like filler.

Guest writer Peter Milligan helms "The Suit of Sorrows" story.I originally skipped over this one when it was printed in comic book form, figuring it was a miss, but it was OK.

The 2nd half of the book is where it starts to get really good.I LOVE the new Scarface and Ventriloquist team Dini has created.I miss Arnold Wesker, but I'm happy Dini brought Scarface back and paid respects to the old team. This is the 2nd two parter he's written since his run on Detective began and we are finally given Sugar's origin.Just like the last 2 parter, Zatana gets in on the action and is utilized quite well (the fact that Dini is married to a magician makes Zatana his geek fantasy).

The last one focuses on Riddler, another regular in Dini's roster. This isn't my favorite Riddler issue he's written, but it's not a bad one either. Finally they end it with a mini story focusing on Zatanna, Scarecrow and Halloween which is hardly worth mentioning except that the artwork is cool.I must say that Nguyen's artwork really grew on me and now I dig it a lot.I wasn't as down on Don Kramer when he was the regular artist as a lot of others were, I thought he did a fine job, but Nguyen has a bit more style to his work which puts him up there as one of the most definitive Bat artists (I love his take on Scarface).

I would rate this a 3 1/2 overall if I could. The 2nd half is pretty awesome, but the weak start brings it down for me.But not to worry, if you like Dini, Heart of Hush delivers big time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch team produces top notch work.
Paul Dini's work on Detective Comics finally comes to life. For his first year as regular writer on Detective Comics, collected as "Batman:Detective" and "Batman:Death and the City", many of Dini's stories were illustrated by Don Kramer, who's weak pencil work really watered down the impact of Dini's straight forward storytelling. In this volume, Dustin Nguyen begins his tenure as regular artist on Detective Comics and the results are impressive. Nguyen easily places himself as the top Batman artist to emerge over the last decade, and elevates Dini's one issue stories to the level of modern classics. His renderings of Batman, Catwoman, Zatanna, the Riddler, Batmobile and Gotham are all defintive, and make me wish DC would do more to maintain this caliber of art in their Batman books.

Dini, who executive produced the outstanding Batman: The Animated Series from the 1990's, as well as wrote many of the show's best episodes, understands Batman and his world. He has a nack for telling a Batman tale that gets to the heart of any character he showcases. His run has made the Riddler an interesting character again; reforming him and recasting him as a detective rival to batman; rather than portray him as a loser as writers with less imagination have done over the last few years. His Zatanna tales have highlighted that character's depth and long history with Batman, even going back to Bruce Wayne's childhood (and creating some romantic tension along the way). There is also the reinvention of the Ventriliquest and Scareface; for which he has done an amazing Job. I was sad to see the original Ventriloquest die during the "Face the Face storyline", but creating a new Ventriliquest, who happens to be a woman, has brought more menace to a character who can come off as quite silly sometimes. The opening tale, an epilogue the dreary "Ressurection of Ra's al Ghul" storyline, has more drama, action, and tension in it's 22 pages than the entire 200 page crossover it completes.

Although these stories are hardly profound or earth shatteringly original, they do embody a simplicity that mark the best Batman tales published over the last 70 years in the pages of Detective Comics; simple whodunnit stories where Batman must employ his detective skills to solve the case. What more appropriate type of story to tell for a magazine called Detective Comics, which has alway surpassed it's sister magazine when it stays true to this formula, and always seems to wane when it tries to be just the back up Batman book, which it should never be.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing special
Paul Dini, the man behind the classic and brilliant Batman: The Animated Series, has had a decent enough run on Detective Comics, of which the Private Casebook here collects.Compiled of pretty much what amounts to be one-shot type issues, the Private Casebook finds tales of Batman's duelings with the Mad Hatter, Catwoman, and a new Ventriloquist among others.Zatanna is also here for the ride briefly, and there's solid artwork from Dustin Nguyen as well. While there's nothing bad about the Private Casebook one bit, there isn't anything about it that really makes it anything work recommending either.Dini's stories are entertaining, but they also end up being pretty bland as well, and don't do anything we haven't seen done plenty of times before in Batman comics.Still, Private Casebook provides a decent, more streamlined alternative to say, Grant Morrison's run on the main Batman title; which if that isn't your thing, you should feel more at home here with what the Private Casebook has to offer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dini's Detective
Most fans have been very pleased by Paul Dini's run on Detective. I am, however, one of the few who haven't enjoyed his run all that much.

Dini is, of course, a great writer. Batman: The Animated Series was probably the best interpretation of Batman ever, and Dini's previous ventures into comics have been quite successful. That being said, I found his run on Detective to suffer from two major flaws;

The first is a part of the writing itself. Every issue of Dini's run has been, without question, a pretty good one-shot take on Batman's world and his villains. With pretty much everything you'd expect from a Batman story. Everything you'd expect...and really nothing else. That's the problem for me. Every single story Dini penned seemed very "safe", and thusly, very bland.

Don't get me wrong, they ARE good stories. But they bring nothing new to the character, and there's not many moments within those stories that I found particular intriguing or exciting. Dini gives exactly what needs to be given for a solid Batman story...and nothing else. In my opinion, at least.

Of course, I did like some things in his run. Every issue with Zatanna featured some really great interactions with Batman, and really seemed to add a lot to each character. I truthfully wish it was explored in more detail.

The second is the art. While Don Kramer and Dustin Nguyen are both acceptable artists, I feel neither did justice to Dini's writing style. They never quite seemed to match is tone, and they seemed to make seemingly bland stories, even more uninteresting.

I certainly hope in the future Dini can team up with some slightly better artists, and do some slightly more innovative things on the book. Then, Detective really would live up to the praise it's been getting. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The book and its writer really don't live up to the hype here
After stepping down from governing the US, superteam The Authority has disbanded over personal conflicts and the inability to cope with their failure to defend Washington DC in Revolution's firs book.
The second book here picks up some time after that and has the team learning who it was that caused their failure and split and their glorious comeback under new leader jenny Quantum.
The good part is that the team is back together and that the Jenny "Spirit Of The Century" concept is developed to its logical conclusion: jenny Sparks was not the first and won't be the last, and in older times the Spirit could have lasted much more than a century. Besides, Dustin Nguyen is a great artist and his covers are brilliant! So the book looks terrific and the storytelling is quite fine.
Plot and script though, well, they kind of suck. My qualms with volume got only worse.
Characters basically act like foul mouthed self-important bullies. In trying to pit the heroes against a moral dilemma of trying to save a world that is doing possibly better than with them, well, the writer doesn't manage to give The Authority the necessary moral high ground. It turns out that super villain Henry Bendis, who came back to life because of the most banal deus ex-machina of superhero comics (he was switched with another self from another reaity before being killed in ours - sic), seems to actually have made capitalism to work for the betterment of all society... Why knock hm down then? Because that's not the right waay to save the world? Aw, c'mon...
Also, ageing Jenny Quantum with the trick that she made herself age because that was what the era needed... and turning her into a Jenny Sparks (the previous spirit of the century) clone? Another cheap, copycat way out of a self-made stupid conundrum.
Whatever: The book is a bit of a pain to read and not wirth the collector prices it goes for, but if you manage to find a cheap copy you might want to decide on your own if Ed Brubaker's trademark retconning of superheroes histories works or not. The art, as I said is very good after all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ed Brubaker's epic story concludes.
Ed Brubaker, best known as the man who killed Captain America over at Marvel Comics, had earlier written a twelve-issue arc on DC/Wildstorm's "The Authority", a JLA-esque superteam with fewer morals and more sex and violence.Introduced by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, and later handled by the likes of Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, Brubaker's run restores some prestige to a property that had meandered for some time. The first half of the story revolved around the Authority running the United States, with a mysterious off-panel foe manipulating events.

This volume picks up a few years in the future after the Authority's disbanding at the end of the last volume, with Jack Hawksmoor (poorly-defined powers relating to cities), Swift (basically DC's Hawkgirl, though Asian), Apollo (Superman analogue), and Midnighter (Batman analogue) (the two are also gay, which is handled as a background detail), the Doctor (an incredibly powerful magician), the Engineer (a woman with nine pints of nanotechnology in lieu of blood, which she extends over her nude body to form a metal skin and weaponry in battle), and Jenny Quantum (the spirit of the 21st century) mostly living separate lives (some, such as the family pairing of Apollo and Jenny, and the romantic Hawksmoor and the Engineer, stick together). The villain behind their disbanding is revealed as Henry Bendix, a villain from the old "Stormwatch" series, and he has a major plan in the works to finally defeat his old enemies and secure corporate dominance of America.

Brubaker is best known for street-level grit, but here he holds his own with the likes of Ellis, throwing out numerous sci-fi concepts, particularly with regard to the history of the various Jennys (the spirits of various eras), whose backstory he embellishes considerably; Jenny Quantum, a relatively minor figure in the first half of this arc, takes centre-stage here, as we see her start to assume the leadership role that Jenny Sparks played in the original incarnation of the team.Bendix is a masterfully-handled villain, and most of the heroes get some big moments that showcase their skills (Shen/Swift remains pretty superfluous, something that seems to invariably be the case no matter who is writing "The Authority").He also makes the first alterations to the team's lineup since the introduction of Jenny Quantum many issues earlier, adding the latest incarnation of the Doctor (who gets quite an interesting origin story) (at the same time sending off the version who's been around for the series so far), and another member whose identity I'll refrain from mentioning, since it's a twist. On art is Dustin Nguyen, whose work fits the Authority absolutely perfectly; his is the best stuff the team has seen since Hitch left.

One can debate the merits of the various runs on "The Authority" (both Ellis and Millar's tenures have much to recommend in different aspects), but Brubaker's may be the best for balancing action, inventiveness, and characterization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down
The worst thing I can say about "As the Crow Flies" is that I wanted it to be longer. But then, all good books are like that.

This book collects Batman 626-630. A fun look at Gotham's mafia element. It's a great short story and at a cover price of $12.95 and being available lots of places for much less it's a steal.

Perhaps the most notable part of this effort was that it was Dustin Nguyen's debut in the world of Batman. Mr. Nguyen goes on to be an asset to Detective comics and in this reviewer's opinion he's a gift to the dark knight. He goes all out, for his part, and many of the pages are breathtaking.

All in all a great read and worth any Batman fan's time and money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Birds of different feathers...
Something mysterious and deadly is happening to Gotham City wiseguys, all in the employ of the Penguin. Is this an outside attack on his operations, or is he possibly behind the dirty deeds himself? And how is the Scarecrow, who is begrudgingly also in the current employ of the Penguin, involved with this and to the recent appearance of the monstrous creature Scarebeast? These are some of the questions that Batman must resolve in this graphic novel. Judd Winick's debut on Batman contains some witty dialogue plus an enjoyably gritty characterization of that tough old bird himself, although his portrayal of Scarecrow as once again a weak punching bag for someone to use and abuse is getting a bit tiresome. A drugged out hallucinatory sequence involving Batman and a few phantom rogues, most notably the Joker and Jason Todd, is the highlight here and, in regards to Todd, a prelude of things to come. On the artistic side, Dustin Nguyen's work is somewhat painful to the senses upon first viewing, with it being slightly reminiscent of Jack Kirby on steroids, although it does become more palatable upon further readings. Everybody's face tends to look as if it was etched from stone, while his action scenes are difficult to discern at times what is actually transpiring. Winick delivered two solid stories during his tenure on Batman, and while his brief run on this title and his work in general has its' critics, I am not among them, and had wished that his stay on the book had been longer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader
Standard Batman fare with a pretty cool Scarecrow-derived beastie, though. The monster that is created to fight the Bat family in this arc is cool in the Where The Wild Things Are sense, as well, which is hopefully what the artist was trying to get at.Even though it is supposed to be crazy and nasty, it is something like a kid might come up with.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Perfect Book, The Artwork Could Have Been Better
In As The Crow Flies, Batman must discover who has unleashed a vicious, man-eating monster called the Scarebeast on Gotham City. All the while, the Penguin has started making moves with crime families to take over Gotham City.

The storyline, while decent, doesn't grab my attention like Hush or Under The Hood Vol. 1 and 2, did.Judd Winick is a great writer but here it doesn't feel the same as it did in his later work. The story tries to grab your attention, but just can't seem to hold it (for a long amount of time, that is).

I liked it but I took off one star for the story, becuase it was average, and one star for the artwork, which was unfortunately, average.

The Penguin is interesting, but it seemed to be a story that was more centered around him than Scarecrow or Batman, despite the title of the book.

Now there are some really good scenes in here, particularly, when Batman is dosed with the Scarebeast's fear gas and begins to hillucinate about the Joker, Two-Face, and Jason Todd. That's where the spectacular dialgue is, other than that, the rest of the dialogue is blah, except for a line that made me laugh when Tim Drake is dressed like a girl to go get tissue samples from the dead body of one of the mobsters. That dialogue made me laugh.

Summing it up, the story's okay, not too fantastic, but not so dull you'll fall asleep while reading. This is mainly for fans of Judd Winick and Penguin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Despite cover, it's Penguin's show
Even though the title is "As the Crow Flies," and Scarecrow is on the cover of the book, the Penguin is the real puller of strings here.If you were in hopes of an intriguing Scarecrow vs. Batman storyline, this book will partially disappoint you.

Batman confronts two maddened thugs who become superhumanly strong after coming in contact with fear toxin.Soon after, a scarecrow monster of Goliath proportions begins threatening organized crime. All the while, Penguin is sitting back, sharpening his beak.

What is the mysterious new "Scarebeast?"That is the new mystery Batman must solve. The answer to the mystery is a bit surprising. To earn that answer, Batman must subdue a seemingly unstoppable monster.

This is a fairly good storyline. However, I offer the warning that this is not, in the main, a Scarecrow story. It is a plot that highlights the Penguin as shooting for a criminal takeover of Gotham after "No Mans Land." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Street of Gotham
2009 saw a massive reorganizaing of the Batman books and their creative teams as the Dark Knight was apparently KIA against Darkseid in Grant Morrison's "Final Crisis". Among the departing teams was Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen, who had enjoyed an acclaimed success on Detective Comics. But the team wasn't finished with Gotham City as they helped launch "Batman: Streets of Gotham", a new series focusing on Batman as perceived through various Gotham characters. "Hush Money" collects the first arc as well as two issues from the "Faces of Evil" event that ran in early 2009.

As the title suggests, "Hush Money" is a continuation of the Hush storyline begun in Dini and Nguyen's final Detective Comcis story, "Heart of Hush". When we last left Dr. Thomas Elliot, his campaign against his childhood friend appeared to have been dealt a fatal blow. His attempt to replace Bruce had failed and in the aftermath, Catwoman and her allies had robbed him of his entire fortune, leaving him penniless. But Batman's death during "Final Crisis" has given Hush an opportunity to continue his original plan and destroy Bruce Wayne's legacy. Dick and Damian's attempts to stop him coincide with the reappearances of Firefly and Mr. Zsaz, leaving the new Dynamic Duohard-pressed to stop their enemies.

Paul Dini's writing is crisp as always and his understanding of Batman and Gotham City remains as excellent as it was 20 years ago during Batman: The Animated Series. Dustin Nguyen's artwork maintains its Mike Mignola-inspired style and quality, making him another influential Batman artist in the modern era.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Hush story...
Batman: Streets of Gotham Vol. 1: Hush Money mostly follows Thomas Elliot(Hush) after the events of Heart of Hush (another great Hush tale by Paul Dini). Now the new Batman (Dick Grayson) and Robin (Damien Wayne) must deal with Hush's plan to ruin Wayne's legacy. The book also contains a story about Firefly at his deadliest. Lots of cameos and easter eggs for some hardcore Batgeeks. (Remember Farmer Brown?) Great read all in all, can't go wrong with Paul Dini. Highly recommended. ... Read more
