Excerpt:Aaron Schock Aaron Jon Schock (born May 28, 1981) is a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives , representing the 18th district of Illinois. The district is based in Peoria and also includes part of Springfield . The area had once been represented by Abraham Lincoln , when it was numbered as the 7th district. Prior to his election, Schock was a school board member in Illinois and later president of the board. Schock was the youngest member of the Illinois House of Representatives and has assumed this position again as the youngest member of the U.S. House in the 111th Congress. Schock is also the first member of the United States Congress born in the 1980s. Early years Schock was born in Morris , Minnesota on May 28, 1981, and lived nearby until fifth grade. His father was a physician in Morris. The family eventually moved to Peoria, Illinois . According to the Washington Post , Schock grew up on a farm with his brother and two sisters. He graduated from Peoria's Richwoods High School . Schock's political career began because of his challenge of his local school board for the right to graduate early. In 2001, Schock was elected a member of the Peoria Public Schools school board at the age of 19, making him the youngest person serving on a school board in Illinois. As a write-in candidate , he defeated the incumbent school board president, Rhonda Hunt by 1,942 votes. After two years on the board, his fellow board members elected him vice president of the board, and a year later, unanimously elected him school board president, making him, at 23, the youngest school board president in history, according to his campaig... ... Product Description
Kindergarten-Grade 4-- Argh, it's Shrek, spitting flame and venting smoke, even uglier than his parents, who kick him goodbye and send him off in the world. He's off on a linear journey to find his true love, foretold by a witch after she recovers from the sight of him. In a maniacal version of the hero's quest, he finds helpers and perils along the way: a dragon, a dream, a donkey, and more. The text rolls right along, here breaking into rhyme, there into knightish talk ("You there, varlet . . . why so blithe?"), there into outright silliness ("Pheasant, peasant? What a pleasant present!") Perfectly pleased with his hideous self, Shrek finally gains entrance to the ugly princess' castle, and after an operatic duet, the two are united, the bride carrying a cactus for a bouquet. The pictures are just as nutty as the story, blending with the text so thoroughly, sometimes echoing, sometimes expanding it, that it's hard to imagine one without the other. It's all here for Steig fans: magic, animism, chaos, self-reliance, hope, and fulfillment, and from one offbeat episode to the next, it all hangs together to make Shrek's destiny seem just right. The fast-forward movement of the story and the inventive , challenging language, full of surprises, make this especially fun to read aloud. --Karen Litton, London Public Libraries, Ontario, Canada ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for any age
The first book I ever read by William Steig was "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble". I was about 5, but I always remembered this book as one of my favorites. When I had my daughter back in the early 90's and she got to kindergarten age, I started taking her to the local library. There I rediscovered William Steig and this is how we came to find "Shrek". We both loved it. My daughter is now almost 18, but I decided to buy it for her anyway. Someday she'll be a mother too and I want her to have the books that she remembers and loved as a child. I highly recommend this book, as well as William's other books. They are intelligent, unique and highly amusing books.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read
I've never seen, nor have I ever desired to see the movie Shrek. It looks stupid in one of those washed up, corny, bad-jokes-to-draw-in-the-adult-crowd kinda ways. So, I was surprised when I saw the movie was actually based on William Steig's work, and my curiosity prompted me to order this book for my kids.

The Amazing Bone is touted as being one of Steig's most bizarre works, but I think Shrek tops that one, easily.

As an incredibly horrid ogre, who wholeheartedly embraces his nastiness, Shrek lumbers about the landscape spewing blue flames, emitting putrid smells, and casually insulting any who cross his path. His nightmares consists of children hugging him. Even thunder and lightning are appalled by the sight of him and flee his presence. He meets a princess (the only one welcome in our household) who is positively disgusting, and they coo and carry on through a number of amusing verses, finally marrying and living "horribly ever after".

I think I may have met the prototype for a Shrek a few times over in my life.

The story isn't bad, and is really quite amusing. I don't personally feel that it's a moral commentary on "even the ugliest creatures deserve love" or anything of that nature, though it does seem to be the antithesis of the classic fairy tale. Most importantly, it is a great deal of fun to read. I think what makes the story, as do so many Steig books, is the language. It's interesting, and at times laugh-out-loud funny, not dumbed-down, and always just the perfect fit. Steig's artwork is very straightforward, but his writing is something to behold.

I still don't think I'll watch the movie anytime soon, especially since it bears little resemblance to the book from what little I know of it. The book I would highly recommend. It's a pleasure to read and a thrill to listen to, if my girls are any indication.

2-0 out of 5 stars Drek
OK, the drawings were sort of cute, and I wasn't expecting something the same as the movie but rather something different that would be outstanding in a different way.

What I got was a not particularly clever short story, with a vocabulary containing some words that must be 5th or 6th grade level (not good for "reading time" with the five-year-old) that didn't really say anything except "I can do a fairy tale backwards".They lived "horribly ever after", clever.

Am I being too harsh?Perhaps, but at least do yourself a favor and try to see a library copy before you plunk down money and reserve bookshelf space.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you loved the movie....
...you and your kids will love the book from which it came. Steig's Shrek is not lovable, but he's very funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Original Shrek
As always, William Steig is a master. This precursor to the Shrek movies does not disappoint. It's short, funny and extremely well done. All ages can enjoy Steig's humor. We love it. ... Read more
